In this episode, I discuss a topic that sparks surprisingly strong opinions: child support arrears that are paid years later, sometimes after a child has already become an adult. When that money finally arrives, who was it really meant for? The child who has grown up, or the parent who spent years covering the expenses that should have been shared all along? This conversation explores the purpose of child support, the financial realities many single parents face, and why delayed support does not erase the sacrifices made along the way. As always, this episode is less about judgment and more about perspective. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Want that chapter checklist just Click Here! Great news! This month's roundtable digs into a shifting housing market narrative—one where the spotlight is quietly moving away from pre-construction condos and toward a surge in multiplex development across Canada. Fueled by highly leveraged, government-backed financing through Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation programs like MLI Select, multiplex projects are emerging as the new "pre-con"—offering attractive returns on paper, but carrying real risks if rents, costs, or timelines don't hold. We unpack why this boom is happening now, who's building, and whether this model is sustainable—or just the latest cycle of risk masked by easy credit. At the same time, cracks are forming beneath the surface. Mortgage arrears are rising across Canada, a signal that higher interest rates and affordability pressures are starting to bite. We connect this trend to broader financial conditions, including rising bond yields, and what that means for borrowers, investors, and housing demand in both Toronto and Vancouver. While home sales remain subdued in both markets, the underlying story is increasingly about financial stress and shifting incentives—not just supply and demand.

Promising signs when it comes to consumer arrears. The latest Centrix data shows the number of people behind on their payments in January was 491 thousand. That was up 20 thousand from December, largely expected due to seasonal trends. But Chief Operating Officer Monika Lacey told Mike Hosking that despite the seasonal increase, arrears are still down on last year by almost 1%. She says overall, Kiwis are managing their money quite well. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Energy regulator warns of ‘historic' arrears as electricity credits end and prices climb Thousands more households could fall into arrears on their energy bills this winter, even as the numbers are already “trending at historically high levels”, the energy regulator has warned. Canada's real estate industry is officially in crisis mode.In this week's episode, we break down why some of the country's most powerful developers — names like Polygon, Westbank, Beedie, and Mosaic — have joined forces to publicly plead for help. From record-breaking drops in pre-construction sales to massive project cancellations and widespread layoffs, the development industry is sounding the alarm louder than ever. Why now? Because new housing starts are collapsing. Because financing has dried up. And because if nothing changes, tens of thousands more jobs are on the line.So what are they asking for? A controversial — and potentially game-changing — solution: lifting the foreign buyer ban to unlock critical investment capital. Is this the lifeline the industry needs, or just another band-aid on a broken system? We explore both sides of this heated issue and propose alternative solutions, including government-backed construction financing to ensure new homes can still be built for Canadians — by Canadians.Plus:

The number of people behind on payments in June fell slightly from May, but is largely unchanged compared to the same time last year. Latest Centrix data shows there were 478 thousand people in arrears, representing more than 12% of the credit-active population. Managing Director Keith McLaughlin says they'd normally expect the figure to fall further over winter - but people are being impacted by things outside their control. He says the costs of insurance, rates and power are leaving their mark, and that's why arrears are a bit sticky at the moment. He told Mike Hosking there will be an ongoing improvement in household budgets as interest rates continue to fall. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The cost of living was the big topic on the final day of the Dáil before the summer break. TDs won't be back in Leinster House for another nine weeks as this Dáil term ends. Leaders' Questions was dominated by the cost of living and the significant increases in the number of families who are in energy arrears. Sinn Féin TD Pearse Doherty says it's disgraceful electricity credits are being scrapped in the budget. Clare FM's Sean Lyons has been speaking with Clare SVP President, Denis Carty about the cost of living, energy arrears and electricity credits.
Positive signs when it comes to consumer arrears, but some businesses are still doing it tough. The latest Centrix data for June shows the number of people behind on payments is down on last year, for the fifth consecutive month in a row. At the same time company liquidations have risen 27% year-on-year. Chief Operating Officer Monika Lacey says that's partly due to increased enforcement, after a softer approach from credit providers during Covid. She says Inland Revenue is among those businesses which is now taking a normal approach again, and that's having an impact. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Slam the Gavel welcomes Marineka Bowman to the podcast. Marineka was last on Season 3, Episodes 104, 131, 159, 160, 174 and 184, Season 4, Episodes 22, 48 and 61, Season 5, Episodes 149, 210, 238, 248, 256, 258, 263 and 271. HELLO DOGE and Pam Bondi. Today we covered Marineka's updates to her case where Judge Natalie Haskins of DE is continuing to disrespect and disregard the imputed income that never existed involving the ex-husband who refuses to show his financials. Now, they have Marineka in the arrears of $23,000.00 and father NOW demands that she go to jail in order to break the parental bond Marineka has with her daughter. Bear in mind the father was not involved in their lives since birth and never contributed to help raising their child. SUDDENLY, he comes back into their lives only to turn it upside down. He asked for one day a week only for one hour to visit his daughter. Judge Natalie Haskins replied, "this is going to be an issue when you come back for custody." Essentially, father came back to court so Haskins could reverse custody and she asked him who would be helping him raise his child. He told her his father, who is in his 80's would be helping. So Judge Haskins gave him custody. Poor decision making on the part of the judge when their daughter was doing well in reading, and now cannot even spell simple words. Fewer people are behind on debt payments. Centrix's May Indicator Report shows consumer arrears fell in April – it was the fourth month in a row where overall arrears were lower than 2024. However, the number of consumers who are more than 90 days past due has risen to its highest since July last year. Managing Director Keith McLaughlin told Mike Hosking they're starting to see household budgets become balanced. He says to an extent, it could be due to the dropping interest rates starting to flow through into budgets. However, it could be a while before we see an easing in the high rate of company liquidations. Company liquidations are up 30% year-on-year, with 175 recorded in April. McLaughlin says they should stabilise in the next couple of months, before trending downward. He says there's an increase in consumer confidence, meaning people are going out and spending more, which will create stimulation for businesses.
