Dr. Beckett discusses why practical “business math” matters in the sports card hobby, from basic percentages (e.g., buying at 80–90% of comps) to avoiding misleading “up 200%” headlines without price context. He urges using statistics, probability, and expected value to evaluate deals—especially breaks—rather than following the herd in prediction markets, noting that AI can also get numbers wrong and must be checked. Beckett also highlights time estimation as a useful skill for card-show work, and cautions that gambling-like products can affect winners as well as losers. He shares a probability anecdote about buying from multiple dealers named “Kevin S,” explains why events often aren't independent, and previews a future nuts-and-bolts episode while encouraging collectors to do their own math (or find a math-savvy buddy) when pricing products and judging breaker configurations. 00:43 Why Math Matters in the Hobby 01:29 Percentages and Price Moves 02:46 Expected Value and Herd Thinking 04:04 AI Can Get Math Wrong 04:32 Time Math at Card Shows 06:17 Gambling Psychology and Edges 07:47 Kevin Odds and Independence 09:58 Expected Value in Product Pricing 10:54 Co-op Breaking and Breaker Boxes

If you don't know your target allocation percentages, you don't have a financial plan for your business. In this episode, I break down what TAPs actually are, why most business owners are running on the "hope and pray plan," and how knowing the right percentages—based on where your business is right now—can be the difference between financial chaos and a clear path to freedom. We talk about the five core Profit First bank accounts, what percentages you should be hitting at different revenue levels, and how to get started even if you're currently spending more than you're making. Whether you're brand new or already doing seven figures, this episode gives you a target to aim for.Timeline Highlights[0:26] Why not knowing your TAPs means you have no financial plan[0:48] What target allocation percentages actually are (and why they matter)[1:17] How Profit First works and why it's like the envelope method for your business[1:58] The five Profit First bank accounts explained[2:17] Why I call profit, owner's comp, and owner's tax the "Golden Trio"[3:19] The danger of the "black hole bank account"[4:02] How TAPs answer the question: how much goes where?[4:22] Why most businesses are built on the hope and pray plan[5:12] TAP breakdown for businesses doing $0–$250K in revenue[6:23] Why owner's comp is 50% at the early stage[6:46] How the percentages shift dramatically as you grow past $250K[7:36] Why you should never reinvest every dollar back into the business[8:14] The difference between TAPs (targets) and CAPs (current allocation percentages)[8:58] How to start with 1% to each Golden Trio account if you're upside down[9:17] How Profit First builds wealthy business habits—not just bank accounts[10:23] Where to find the full TAP breakdown for every business sizeKey TakeawaysIf you don't have target allocation percentages, you don't have a real financial plan. The five Profit First accounts are: income, profit, owner's comp, owner's tax, and operating expenses. At $0–$250K revenue, aim for 15% profit, 50% owner's comp, and 15% owner's tax.As your business grows past $250K, percentages shift—more toward opex, less toward owner's pay.Never reinvest every dollar back into the business—always protect the Golden Trio.Start where you are: even 1% to each Golden Trio account is progress.TAPs are your goal; CAPs (current allocation percentages) are your starting point.Links & ResourcesGet the full TAP breakdown for your business size and book a free discovery call: simplecfo.comClosingThanks for spending time with me today. With host retail coach Wendy Batten https://wendybatten.com/podcast-intro/ Episode Overview In this episode of the Retail Mystery Series, I'll walk you through a common situation many shop owners experience but struggle to explain. Sales are strong. The shop is busy. Yet there is little cash left at the end of the day and bills are starting to pile up. Through another fictional case study, I'll explore how this happens and what shop owners need to examine when revenue looks good but the numbers still do not work. By looking closely at percentages, expenses, and how sales goals are actually set, I'll show you how to uncover where the money is really going. If you have ever wondered why busyness does not always translate into profit, this episode offers a simple framework to start understanding your numbers and make more grounded decisions in your retail business. Our Key Topics Why strong sales do not always translate into healthy cash flow What happens when sales goals are based on assumptions instead of actual business needs What it means to look at rent, payroll, and operations as percentages of sales - especially if you've recently moved or had a change up in expenses recently Why sales goals should be calculated after understanding expenses and margins What reverse engineering your numbers from the bottom up looks like for a retail business What it means to attach your marketing to a clear and calculated sales goal Key Takeaways on Knowing Your Margins Sales goals should be calculated after understanding margins, expenses, payroll, and operations. It should be the last number you determine when you are looking at your numbers. Comparing a new location to old numbers can create misleading expectations. If you've recently seen an increase in a large expense (like rent), you need to adjust your goals to cover. Percentages help reveal whether the business structure actually works financially. It doesn't matter how high your revenue is if you aren't covering your expenses and planning for profits. Understanding where every dollar goes protects your business from cash flow surprises. Marketing efforts should be attached to a clear and calculated sales goal. Your marketing campaigns, newsletters, social media posts, etc. shouldn't be planned until you know exactly what numbers and margins you are needing/wanting to hit. If sales look strong but the money still feels tight, this episode offers a simple place to start understanding why. Grieving Out Loud: A Mother Coping with Loss in the Opioid Epidemic
When President Trump signed an executive order classifying fentanyl as a weapon of mass destruction, some who have lost loved ones to the powerful synthetic opioid applauded the decision. But a drug historian argues The White House is making serious mistakes in its approach to the crisis. In this episode of Grieving Out Loud, historian Dr. David Herzberg looks back at earlier substance crises in the United States and discusses what went wrong, what went right, and what lessons those experiences might hold today. He explores how history can inform today's policies, the unintended consequences of past approaches, and why understanding the bigger picture is crucial for tackling the opioid epidemic. By examining decades of drug trends and responses, Herzberg offers a perspective that goes beyond politics, helping listeners think critically about how America can respond more effectively to fentanyl and other substance crises.Explore David's website and books here. Dr. Herzberg says research shows that roughly 75% of people who use even the most addictive drugs like heroin and cocaine do not develop an addiction. This means addiction risk is shaped less by the drug itself and more by a person's circumstances, environment, and biology. That is why prevention, early intervention, and access to treatment matter so much. 1. If you're not paying yourself a real salary, you don't own a business—you own a job. In this episode, I break down one of the biggest mistakes I see business owners make: building a company that pays everyone except themselves. We talk about why so many entrepreneurs struggle to pay themselves (even after reading all the right books), why revenue doesn't automatically create owner income, and how to implement a simple system that makes paying yourself automatic. I walk you through exactly how to set this up—whether you're brand new, still working a W-2, or already doing significant revenue but not consistently taking money home.Timeline Highlights[0:00] Why not paying yourself means you own a job, not a business[1:05] The frustration of knowing you should pay yourself but not knowing how[1:26] Scaling revenue while still not taking home income[2:10] Why Profit First changed how I view owner pay[2:29] The difference between servant leadership and financial leadership[3:08] Why you must treat yourself like a paid employee[4:03] The simple system: setting up an Owner's Compensation account[5:05] Why big money events won't fix broken cash habits[6:07] How much should you pay yourself? Fetal Microcephaly has an incidence of 2 to 12 in10,000 births in the USA and can be diagnosed prenatally via ultrasound (in second or early third trimester) or postnatally via measurement of head circumference (HC). Antepartum, this is a unique diagnosis since we are mainly used to using PERCENTAGES for biometrics and for fetal weight, butmicrocephaly is not diagnosed by HC percentage- but by Standard Deviation (SD). Microcephaly has been linked to developmental delay, seizures, as well as feeding, vision and hearing problems. Prognosis depends on the severityof the microcephaly and whether it is associated with other anomalies. What SD is diagnostic of microcephaly? What are the potential etiologies? What genetic syndromes are most associated with true microcephaly? Is fetal cranial MRIrecommended? Listen in for details. 1. Tipping used to be restricted to full service restaurants, but now it's spread to coffee chains and fast-food joints. A new analysis published by BC Policy Solutions proposes that it's time to finally ban tipping in Canada and enact a living wage. We speak with Simon Pek, one of the authors of the piece.

Dr. Nagrath shares how confidence and belief are essential in overcoming math anxiety and shaping a child’s success in mathematics. Your WHY I help children and the adults who support them overcome mathematics anxiety and build real confidence with numbers. My mission is to empower children with mathematics. Right now, about 4 out of 5 students start kindergarten unprepared for the kindergarten math curriculum. Underneath that statistic is something very human: a language gap around quantities. Children often don’t have a solid, intuitive grasp of what words like “three,†“ten,†or “five†really mean, and have not connected them with symbols on a page. When the language and ideas aren’t there yet, math can quickly feel like a foreign language. My “why†is closing that gap—so that every child has the conceptual language of quantity they need before they ever have a chance to say, “I’m just not a math person.†Your Background: What Math Was Like for You Growing up, I was not always the kid who just “got†mathematics. It did not all come naturally. My mother played a huge role in changing that story for me. Every summer, she would gather the math books for the following year and have me study for a few hours a day so I could be ready when school started. At the time, it sometimes felt tedious, but looking back, that steady, structured exposure is what gave me the understanding and confidence to persevere in math, instead of turning away from it. Early discipline and support are big reasons why I eventually earned my Ph.D. in Mathematics and Computer Science from the University of Denver. Because I know firsthand what it’s like not to instantly understand math—and what a difference the right support can make—I’m passionate about giving other children the kind of foundation and encouragement that changed everything for me. The system focuses on the language and concepts of quantity first, then builds steadily toward more advanced ideas. By meeting students at their true level and strengthening the underlying language of math, we help them move quickly and confidently—without the pressure and anxiety that so many of us grew up with. I was one of the students who was anxious about math. I even said, “I don't do math,” because I struggled with it. Listening to the strategies he shared about making math relevant and real makes so much sense. As a professional developer working with math teachers, I saw the power of math. I could see math everywhere. I understand the idea Dr. Nagrath mentioned about math being like a language we can learn if we practice it. I hope you enjoyed our conversation as much as I did. A recent survey from American Century Investments reveals some surprising disconnects between retirement plan sponsors and the workers participating in their 401(k) plans. The findings uncovered some sizable gaps in how each group views participant preparedness, risk tolerance, and even the basic functionality of common retirement products. To break down the results of the 12th Annual National Retirement Survey and shed light on what's behind these disconnects, we welcome Glenn Dial, Senior Retirement Strategist at American Century Investments, who unpacks the data, challenges assumptions, and discusses what plan sponsors may be overlooking when it comes to participant needs and expectations.Listen in as we explore employer-employee risk perceptions, barriers to retirement income adoption, misconceptions about TDFs, and what the survey says about income replacement, defaults, and protecting assets from market volatility.Source: 12th Annual American Century Retirement SurveyMethodology: The participant survey was conducted between June 3, 2025, and June 23, 2025. The survey included 1,500 full-time workers between the ages of 25 and 70 saving through their employer's retirement plan. The data were weighted to reflect key demographics (gender, income, and education) among all American private sector participants between 25 and 70.The sponsor survey was conducted between May 20, 2025, and June 16, 2025. Survey included 500 plan sponsor representatives holding a job title of Director or higher and having considerable influence when it comes to making decisions about their company's retirement plan (either 401(k), 403(b), or 457 plans). Maximizing Business Value: Lessons from 800+ Deals with Matt Uhler The Cash Discipline That Saves—or Sells—Your Business Most companies don't go under because they lack revenue. They go under because they run out of cash. And the worst part? It doesn't happen overnight. It happens slowly… then suddenly. One month, you're profitable. The next, you're panicking over payroll and wondering what went wrong. In this episode, I sit down with Matt Uhler—a business broker and owner who's evaluated over 2,500 companies, completed 800+ transactions, and personally owned more than 35 businesses. Matt has seen it all: the slow leaks, the bad habits, and the simple financial blind spots that quietly destroy good companies. He's also seen what fixes them—disciplined cash management, clear financial dashboards, and owners who treat their business like an asset, not an ATM. Key Lessons from the Conversation with Matt Uhler: Cash Is the Real Failure Point. Most businesses don't collapse because of competition or bad strategy — they fail when they run out of cash. Profit on paper doesn't equal money in the bank. Lesson: Cash flow is oxygen. Without reserves, one slow quarter can suffocate your business. Protect Your Operating Capital Floor. Matt's formula: Accounts Receivable (avg. days outstanding) + 1 Month of Fixed Expenses = Your Minimum Reserve. Lesson: Treat this number like sacred ground. No owner draws or distributions until you're above that floor. Watch the Percentages, Not Just the Dollars. Only about 10% of business owners track financials by percentages — yet that's where the truth hides. Lesson: A 2% increase in labor, 1% rise in COGS, and a few missed invoices can quietly erase your entire profit margin. "Creep" Will Kill Your Profit. Profit erosion happens quietly — small leaks across pricing, payroll, or waste. Lesson: Five small 2% inefficiencies equal a 10% hit to profit. Track it monthly and fix leaks early before they become habits. Run Sale-Ready, Even If You're Not Selling. Buyers pay a premium for companies with systems, diversified revenue, and consistent cash flow — but those same traits make your business easier and safer to run today. Lesson: Operate like you'll sell in three years. You'll earn more now and later. Key Takeaway: Cash discipline isn't boring—it's freedom. When your reserves are full, you sleep better, make smarter decisions, and stop chasing bad business just to survive. A profitable business is one that's calm, clear, and ready for whatever comes next. Bio: Matt Uhler is far from a typical business broker and acquisition strategist. Over the course of his 27-year career, he has evaluated more than 2,500 businesses, completed over 800 transactions, and successfully owned and operated more than 35 businesses across multiple industries. Matt's journey was not without its challenges. In fact, he attributes much of his expertise to the early setbacks he faced, where he learned firsthand the pitfalls that derail many entrepreneurs. What set him apart, however, was his ability to turn those experiences into powerful lessons. This mindset, combined with his focus on strategic partnerships and creative deal structures, has allowed him to help countless clients build wealth through small business acquisitions. Matt is founder of Amped Success, a company dedicated to educating and empowering entrepreneurs, business owners, and investors with the tools they need to confidently navigate acquisitions. He is also the creator of the Buyer's Acquisition Formula, a proven framework that is designed to reduce risk and maximize opportunities for long-term success. 27 Years Experience Over 35 Businesses Owned Over 800 Deals Closed Over 2,500 Deals Evaluated $250+ Million Transactions Funded Links: Website: http://www.ampedsuccess.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61557299191227&mibextid=wwXIfr&rdid=uV765w5z0S5PYnmb&share_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fshare%2F19x2KTYQCb%2F%3Fmibextid%3DwwXIfr# LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/matt-uhler-a9896612?utm_source=share&utm_campaign=share_via&utm_content=profile&utm_medium=ios_app Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ampedsuccess?igsh=MWRrOTA1MWthOThlcA%3D%3D&utm_source=qr TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@ampedsuccess?_t=ZP-8tXABIpBHxu&_r=1 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@AmpedSuccess Conclusion: Most businesses don't fail from lack of opportunity — they fail from lack of cash discipline. It's not the big mistake that kills them, it's the small 1–2% leaks that add up over time. Matt reminded us that every owner needs a cash reserve floor — your operating capital formula of accounts receivable plus one month of fixed expenses. That's your safety net. Never draw below it. He also showed how tracking percentages instead of just totals helps you catch problems early — before the slow slide becomes a sudden crash. And finally, the mindset shift: run your business as if you'll sell it someday. Whether you do or not, that discipline makes your company stronger, more profitable, and less stressful to run. So take a moment after this episode — look at your numbers. Where has "creep" slipped in? How much runway would you have if revenue stopped for 60 days? And do you have the systems and reserves that let you sleep well at night? #ProfitFirst #CashFlow #OperatingCapital #BusinessFinance #OwnerPay #SmallBusinessProfit #Profitability Watch the full episode on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@profitanswerman Sign up to be notified when the next cohort of the Profit First Experience Course is available!
