“When you used to think about branding, you’d be thinking about advertising. Now it’s about building trust.” This week on the On Brand podcast, I welcomed back Aimee Irwin from Experian Marketing Services. Since we last spoke way back in 2019, the world has been dealing with the impact of the COVID-19 global pandemic. As a result, consumer behavior has changed in ways marketers need to know about. Aimee breaks it down this week on the show. Enjoy! About Aimee Irwin Aimee Irwin serves as VP of Strategy and Partnerships at Experian Marketing Services. Aimee is a skilled strategy and corporate development executive with deep experience in digital marketing and advertising and track record of success in developing and building profitable new digital and mobile businesses at both early-stage and public companies. Aimee led strategic partnerships and strategic initiatives for Nielsen’s Marketing Cloud where she negotiated and managed strategic data and identity management partnerships supporting Nielsen’s data targeting and marketing effectiveness businesses. Aimee also served as SVP of Strategy and Partnerships at Verve Mobile, a leading location-based mobile advertising platform. At Verve, Aimee developed and led Verve’s mobile application business and inventory partnerships with hundreds of media companies. Prior to Verve, Aimee was VP of Strategy and Corporate Development at AOL, where she was responsible for strategic planning, mergers and acquisitions, and strategic partnerships for AOL’s advertising businesses. Previously, Aimee held executive positions at several successful internet and mobile companies including Lightningcast, an Internet video advertising company now part of AOL, Leap Wireless, a large U.S. wireless carrier and Backwire, an internet and mobile marketing company acquired by Leap. Aimee started her career in consulting with KPMG and Bain and Company. Aimee has a BS from Georgetown University and an MBA from Kellogg. Episode Highlights How can brands build trust for consumers impacted by COVID-19? “The consumer has to be at the heart of your strategy. There has to be an appropriate value exchange that happens there in terms of the data collected and consumer control.” What are some examples of brands using smart data? Aimee joked that Amazon is a great example but isn’t a great case study as they “collect lots of data from their customers through several interactions.” She then went on to highlight some innovative things Nordstrom and DSW are doing. What’s one thing marketers can do right now to move the needle? Once again, Aimee reminded us all to develop customer-focused strategies. What brand has made Aimee smile recently? She shared a story about how something as simple as a gift card in the mail from American Express made her day. The little things matter. To learn more, go to Audiences @ Experian Marketing Services. Customers' shopping habits are shifting toward online, and this trend has accelerated during the pandemic. “These changes will help us deliver services to customers in a way they prefer,” according to spokesman Jim Kimberly. Wave7 Research last week first reported that Cricket was planning to close “hundreds of doors,” citing a source familiar with the matter. AT&T acquired the Cricket brand from Leap Wireless in 2014. Cricket is not the only brand experiencing permanent store closures. In late April, multiple sources reported that T-Mobile was closing more Metro by T-Mobile prepaid stores. T-Mobile did not provide a number of stores set for closure but said it was “optimizing” its retail footprint “as a normal course of business,” acknowledging that it notified some dealer stores that it was transitioning them to T-Mobile stores and closing a “small number” of redundant locations. Speed is key with Wi-Fi, and the category has certainly been moving fast as of late. First came Wi-Fi 6, a brand-new, faster version of Wi-Fi that started hitting the market in 2019. Now, after a unanimous vote in April, the Federal Communications Commission is opening up an entire new band of spectrum to accommodate next-gen devices designed to tap into it. The Wi-Fi Alliance, an industry group that manages Wi-Fi nomenclature, branded this new spectrum and the devices that can take advantage of it under a new name: Wi-Fi 6E. The first such devices are expected to begin hitting stores by the end of this year. One industry-funded report claims that, along with providing faster speeds and new room for growing internet traffic, the move will generate more than $180 billion in US revenue over the next five years. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/georgiastalk/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/georgiastalk/support
“The constant today is still that the consumer is at the heart of everything.” In a career spanning big brands and early-stage companies, Aimee Irwin has been at the forefront of strategic marketing and advertising. Despite the fact that big data is bigger than ever before, it’s nothing without the ability to effectively manage it and create meaningful connections with customers. We discussed all of this and more on this week’s episode of the On Brand podcast. About Aimee Irwin Aimee Irwin serves as VP of Strategy at Experian Marketing Services. Drawing on her experiences working for both big brands like Experian and AOL and emerging companies, Aimee shared her thoughts on the one constant in spite of all of the big data: “The consumer is at the heart of everything.” We can build on this further with the new data we have at our fingertips. “With mobile, the opportunity is huge.” While mobile has been on the marketing checklist for decades now, the opportunities have gotten richer with the evolution of both consumer data and smartphone technology. Aimee shared examples such as loyalty and advanced tools that help enrich brands' relationships with their consumers. What’s an example of a branding win driven by big data? As a frequent traveler, Aimee spends a lot of time on the Marriott-Bonvoy app. The data based on her travels allows them to share highly relevant mobile messages with her as she’s on the go. What brand has made Aimee smile recently? She shared her experiences with the salad brand Sweetgreen, and how they communicate with her in an authentic, transparent way. Those two crazy companies are back at it. We saw both MetroPCS and Leap Wireless hire strategic advisors in February, which has everyone talking merger again. It won’t be easy this time, just like it wasn’t easy in September 2007. The environment has changed since then, though. So this finally be the time they get together and decide that it’s better to combine forces than to die alone? So click on over to hear the Prepaid Podcast. And don’t forget to subscribe to the podcast so you won’t miss any future episodes. You can also subscribe to the podcast on iTunes. Highlights include: Could any other carriers be interested in either Leap or Metro? Chances are it’s either a merger or nothing, but we did see two postpaid subscribers add tons of prepaid customers in the fourth quarter of 2009. T-Mobile has been adding more prepaid than postpaid for some time now, and they continued that trend. Sprint has put a greater emphasis on prepaid, and added plenty of those customers while losing postpaid. Could either of those companies be interested? Also, another factor for Leap: a new joint venture with Pocket Communications. For now it will help enhance their South Texas network, but given the terms of the joint venture it could also factor prominently into a merger or acquisition.
