Welcome to episode #934 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast - Episode #934. When it comes to management and innovation, Vijay Govindarajan (aka VG) is a true legend. VG is a name synonymous with strategy and innovation. As the Coxe Distinguished Professor at Dartmouth's Tuck School of Business and a key player in Silicon Valley's Mach49 incubator (prior to joining the faculty at Tuck, VG was on the faculties of Harvard Business School, Insead and the Indian Institute of Management), VG's insights are pure gold for anyone looking to push their business thinking forward. VG's journey is impressive. From being the first Professor in Residence and Chief Innovation Consultant at General Electric to working with top management teams in over 40% of the Fortune 500, VG has seen it all. In our conversation, he breaks down the evolving definition of innovation and why it's crucial for organizations to aim high and take risks. One of his standout ideas is the fusion strategy — melding physical products with tech to create something truly remarkable (also the name of his latest book, Fusion Strategy - How Real-Time Data and AI Will Power the Industrial Future). It's not just about having the latest gadgets but about integrating them in ways that make life better. We also tackle the topic of leadership. VG stresses that true leaders are those who can solve customer problems in real-time and build lifelong relationships. He's a firm believer that smart data and AI are the new electricity - essential and transformative. But it's not just about having the tools... it's about how you use them. Innovation isn't just a buzzword for VG; it's a necessity, especially in our unpredictable world. We also talked about the impact of black swan events and how these unpredictable challenges require a new way of thinking and an openness to change. He's all about thinking differently and pushing the boundaries to reach your true potential (see his ten-plus business books or the countless articles he's published in the top academic journals - work like Reverse Innovation, Stop The Innovation Wars and many more). It's about being bold, taking risks, and learning from every step along the way. VG's practical experience and strategic mind make him a treasure trove of insights. He's worked with industry giants like Boeing, Coca-Cola, FedEx, and Walmart, and spoken at major events like TED and the World Economic Forum at Davos. He's a big brain with a warm heart and a passion for doing things right in business today. Enjoy the conversation... Running time: 1:06:48. Hello from beautiful Montreal. Reverse Innovation. Stop The Innovation Wars. Follow VG on LinkedIn. Follow VG on X. This week's music: David Usher 'St. Lawrence River'. Takeaways Embrace true potential and overcome risk aversion to achieve innovation. Integrate physical and tech to create better products through fusion strategy. Leverage digital technologies to transform the industrial sector. Focus on solving customer problems in real time and building lifelong relationships. Smart data and AI are the new electricity, providing immense power and potential for companies. Innovation is crucial in a world of unpredictable change, and conducting low-cost experiments at the edges of the organization can lead to strategic flexibility and adaptability. Black swan events, such as Covid 19, require leaders to think differently and embrace new ways of navigating uncertainty. The marketplace is evolving and improving our lives, with technology enabling greater connectivity and convenience. Thinking differently and continuously striving to reach one's true potential is key to personal and professional growth.

Was ist ABM?

Urban populations are growing while climate change means both droughts, as well as sudden intense rainfall events, are on the rise. However, existing urban infrastructure in UK has not caught up with the water management challenges presented by these scenarios. We need to be much smarter about the capture, usage and planned management of water going forward. This is critical to reduce flood risk and to be prepared for periods of drought.   In this episode, New Civil Engineer assistant news editor Rob Hakimian is joined by two guests to discuss the topic - Charlotte Markey, who is green urbanisation innovation manager at Polypipe, and John Griffiths, who is national account manager at environmental data management solutions company Kisters..   In conversation with Rob, Charlotte and John outline the opportunities for upgrading existing infrastructure to blue green infrastructure in the UK, explaining examples including tree pits, rain gardens and blue green roof systems. They also explain the growing importance of data collection – particularly using smart sensors. Both Charlotte and John suggest that this data could be an untapped resource that might be better leveraged with a more strategic “joined up” approach on the part of government, utilities providers and other water management stakeholders. They also talk about on their involvement a recent pilot project in Manchester that saw the installation of a climate and water resilience research roof in the heart of the city. The project is helping to drive understanding of how a combination of construction and data technologies can help mitigate the impacts of climate change and urbanisation. It demonstrates how storing and re-using rainwater can reduce the volume of surface run-off impacting important assets such as sewer networks.  Charlotte and John compare the approach in the UK to elsewhere globally and consider the implications of not changing the approach to surface water management and the role smart data can play in that. Listen now to hear about how blue green infrastructure and smart rainwater management can play an ongoing role in the UK's climate resilience. The Engineers Collective is proving truly global in reach, with a third of listeners based outside the UK. It is also appealing to an inquisitive, career-builder demographic, with 80% of listeners under 35. This lecture occurred at The Institute of World Politics on February 7, 2017. This lecture was given by Mr. Dan Evans of Storm King Analytics. The excitement about "Big Data" usually focuses on the access to lots of data -- thousands, or millions, of records. "Big Data" sources are certainly valuable in many situations, but we can cite numerous examples where it doesn't produce insights that are useful. Our experience tells us that simply pulling in large amounts of data usually doesn't answer the question at hand. There's a fine art to collecting the appropriate data sets to make effective decisions; it requires a combination of both smarts and wisdom--something we call "Smart Data." Storm King's recent work has focused on network models of Ungoverned Spaces and business intelligence in Frontier and Emerging Markets. Traditional "Big Data" sources tend to be incomplete and inaccurate when it comes to these environments and they don't begin to capture the type of data required to understand the networks of influence in these environments. In this presentation, we will address the potential pitfalls of "Big Data/Black Box" approach and we will introduce recent case studies on the ungoverned area of Fezzan in Southwestern Libya as well as a Moroccan market entry scenario. Both of these cases illustrate the effectiveness and versatility of our "Smart Data" methodology. There will be time for Q&A at the end of the presentation.
