Foundations of Amateur Radio Cars have been here for well over a century and so has radio. Cars pretty much start when Carl Benz first applied for a patent for his "vehicle powered by a gas engine" on the 29th of January 1886 which is regarded as the birth certificate for automobiles. Radio starts as a thing when Heinrich Hertz proves that radio waves exist in 1888. Since then things have changed, a lot. Today, both these technologies, cars and radio, are everywhere. It's estimated that there are 1.47 billion vehicles on the planet today, in contrast, there are only 44 thousand broadcasters across the globe, serving about 4 billion people, or half the population. So, cars win, right? Not so fast. The Wi-Fi Alliance estimates that there's 3.8 billion Wi-Fi devices being shipped this year alone and there's about 19.5 billion in use. Many of those are mobile phones, so they're not only using Wi-Fi, but GSM, CDMA, 3G, 4G or 5G radios. In many cases they'll have Bluetooth on board and will be receiving GPS information from the currently five constellations in orbit around Earth. Some will even have an FM receiver on board, just to cram another radio inside the same box. To give you a better sense of scale, 2022 saw 4.9 billion Bluetooth devices shipped. In 2010 it was estimated that there were a billion GPS users, today there are more than six billion users being served by GPS systems for positioning, navigation and precision timing. I haven't even talked about other uses of radio, like radar, astronomy, remote sensing, remote control, keyless entry and countless other related and interconnected technologies. So, while there's a car for every five or so people, there's at least two Wi-Fi radios per person and probably more like a dozen radios per person when you start counting those embedded in our daily lives. So, why is it that we have an estimated car enthusiast population of 10% and an estimated radio amateur population of 0.04%? It's not to do with the popularity of the topic. Google trends shows that both cars and radio are consistently trending downwards at about 2% each year since 2016. Radio is consistently twice as popular as cars. When you rank the global popularity of cars vs radio, out of 47 countries, 40 countries care more about radio than cars. South Africa and India care about cars 74% to 26% radio, even New Zealand, 56% vs 44%, cars to radio. At the other end of the scale, Peru, 2% cars, 98% radio. Germany, home for both Heinrich Hertz and Carl Benz, 92% radio, 8% cars. Popular search engines aside, there are other places to look for content. Take platforms like Prime Video, Netflix, Apple TV+ and YouTube. When you search for radio or cars on those platforms it's interesting to see what comes back and explore how relevant it is. I'll encourage you to do the experiment, but as a surprise to nobody, the results are universally woeful but illustrative. Searching for cars returns mostly relevant content, but a search for radio brings back results that have absolutely nothing to do with the topic. Seriously, on Netflix, two documentaries about Pele and Beckham, both famous footballers, neither known for their interaction with radio, rank higher than a documentary on Prime about radio astronomy, cunningly titled, wait for it: "Radio Astronomy". Even the initially promising Netflix result "Amateur" in response to the term "radio" is about a 14 year old basketball player navigating the dark side of sports. While we're at it, just for giggles, I checked the closed captioning for the movie and the word "radio" doesn't appear in the movie, at all. Speaking of representation, Netflix recently published their entire list of content for the first half of the year. The word radio appears exactly once, "John Mulaney: Kid Gorgeous at Radio City" and that doesn't even turn up as a search result when you go looking for "radio". The word "cars" appears 18 times in the Netflix library. So, why is it that topics like "radio", which is demonstrably twice as popular as "cars", and perhaps a dozen times more, let's call it, numerous, in society, has such a poor showing and what can we as connoisseurs on the topic of "radio" do about this? Cars are represented in a plethora of movies, series and shows featuring reviews, mods, restorations and entertainment. There's topic specific channels and social media. There's shops, events, races and so much car merchandise. Is that what's missing in radio, or more specifically, amateur radio, marketing, or is it something else? I'm keen to hear your thoughts. She co-invented Low Latency Xhaul (LLX) technology. Jennifer currently heads the convergence architecture for mobile and cable. Jennifer has more than 100 patents issued or pending and published more than 30 papers at the IEEE and SCTE. Like its Wi-Fi 5 (formerly 802.11ac) predecessor, the new standard runs on 5GHz spectrum. But, new spectrum has been opening up across the globe in the 6GHz bands, which gives additional speed and reliability. New spectrum means a new draft for what is being called Wi-Fi 6E. The updated standard will bring with it 14 additional 80 MHz channels and 7 additional 160 MHz channels. The additional of new channels means more opportunity to find channels without any local interference, improving stability.Potentially even more important that all of this is the addition of capacity. Connected homes and smart homes mean more devices, all of which are looking for internet access via Wi-Fi. Fortunately, Wi-Fi 6E compatible devices will be coming to the market soon. Customers' shopping habits are shifting toward online, and this trend has accelerated during the pandemic. “These changes will help us deliver services to customers in a way they prefer,” according to spokesman Jim Kimberly. Wave7 Research last week first reported that Cricket was planning to close “hundreds of doors,” citing a source familiar with the matter. AT&T acquired the Cricket brand from Leap Wireless in 2014. Cricket is not the only brand experiencing permanent store closures. In late April, multiple sources reported that T-Mobile was closing more Metro by T-Mobile prepaid stores. T-Mobile did not provide a number of stores set for closure but said it was “optimizing” its retail footprint “as a normal course of business,” acknowledging that it notified some dealer stores that it was transitioning them to T-Mobile stores and closing a “small number” of redundant locations. Speed is key with Wi-Fi, and the category has certainly been moving fast as of late. First came Wi-Fi 6, a brand-new, faster version of Wi-Fi that started hitting the market in 2019. Now, after a unanimous vote in April, the Federal Communications Commission is opening up an entire new band of spectrum to accommodate next-gen devices designed to tap into it. The Wi-Fi Alliance, an industry group that manages Wi-Fi nomenclature, branded this new spectrum and the devices that can take advantage of it under a new name: Wi-Fi 6E. The first such devices are expected to begin hitting stores by the end of this year. Bevor ich Ihnen diese Frage beantworte, möchte ich ganz kurz auf zwei Begriffe eingehen, die häufig in Zusammenhang mit Hotspots genannt werden: WLAN und WiFi Die Abkürzung WLAN steht für Wireless Local Area Network und bedeutet zu Deutsch: Drahtloses lokales Netzwerk. Die Verbindung zum Internet erfolgt also drahtlos über einen sogenannten WLAN-Router. Der wesentliche Unterschied zu einem normalen LAN ist, dass das Endgerät beispielsweise ein Notebook nicht mit einem Kabel, sondern über ein Funksignal mit dem Internet verbunden ist. WLANs zeichnen sich durch ihre große Sendeleistung, Reichweite sowie ihrer hohen Datenübertragungsrate aus. WiFi hingegen steht für Wireless Fidelity und ist ein Kunstwort, das für den 802.11 Funk-Standard und dazu kompatible Geräte steht. Der Begriff WiFi wurde von einer Organisation namens Wi-Fi Alliance entwickelt, die Tests überwacht, die den nahtlosen Austausch zwischen Produkten zertifizieren. Ein Produkt, das die Tests besteht, erhält das Label "Wi-Fi certified" nach dem IEEE-802.11-Standard. Kehren wir nun zurück zu unserer Ausgangsfrage: Was ist eigentlich ein Hotspot? Ein Hotspot ist ein öffentlicher oder privater WLAN-Zugriffspunkt außerhalb des eigenen WLAN- Netzes. Öffentliche Hotspots, findet man mittlerweile an vielen öffentlichen Anlaufstellen wie Universitäten, Bibliotheken, Krankenhäusern, Flughäfen oder aber in Hotels, der Gastronomie und in Einkaufszentren. Während private WLAN-Zugänge nur von der Familie und vielleicht noch Gästen genutzt werden, sind Hotspots von vornherein auf eine öffentliche Nutzung angelegt. Man unterscheidet grundsätzlich zwischen gesicherten Netzwerken, auf die man ohne entsprechende Zugangsdaten keinen Zugriff hat, und ungesicherten Netzwerken, die für alle frei zugänglich sind. Beides hat seine Vor- und Nachteile. Ein gesichertes Netzwerk erfordert eine Authentifizierung mittels spezieller Zugangsdaten. Bei kostenpflichtigen Diensten ist eine Registrierung erforderlich, die ein wenig Zeit in Anspruch nimmt. Bei kostenfreiem WLAN, beispielsweise in Cafés oder Hotels, erhält man die Zugangsdaten meist auf Nachfrage. Hier genügt die Auswahl des entsprechenden Netzwerkes und die Eingabe der Zugangsdaten. Bei einem ungesicherten, unverschlüsselten Netzwerk erspart man sich dagegen die Zeit für Registrierung und Einrichtung und kann sofort lossurfen. Dafür ist man hier unerwünschten Spähangriffen leichter ausgeliefert. Wie funktioniert ein Hotspot-System? Grundsätzlich werden öffentliche Hotspots mit speziellen “Free WiFi” oder “Hotspot” Schildern oder Aufkleber gekennzeichnet. Sobald sich ein Nutzer in der Nähe eines öffentlichen WLAN-Hotspots befindet, muss er nur das WLAN seines Endgeräts aktivieren und nach “Verfügbare Netzwerke” suchen. Wird das WLAN des Anbieters angezeigt, kann er sich mit dem Netzwerk verbinden. Falls sich der Nutzer noch nicht authentifiziert hat, wird sein Web-Browser automatisch zunächst auf eine Anmeldeseite, ein sogenanntes Captive Portal, geleitet. Dort muss sich der Nutzer mittels Eingabe eines gültigen Prepaid- Codes oder Passwortes authentifizieren. Der eingegebene Prepaid- Code oder das Passwort wird anhand einer Datenbank, die im Internet oder lokal auf einem Hotspot-Router liegt, überprüft. Wenn der Code bzw. das Passwort mit den Informationen auf der Datenbank übereinstimmt wird der Benutzer freigeschaltet. Gleichzeitig wird ein Timer aktiviert der sicherstellt, dass der Zugang nach Ablauf der gebuchten Zeit endet und gesperrt wird. Allerdings ist es möglich, die Internet-Sitzung zwischenzeitlich zu unterbrechen. Meldet sich ein Nutzer ab, kann er sein nicht verbrauchtes Zeitguthaben später weiter nutzen. Einige Systeme bieten zudem die automatische Speicherung des Guthabens, falls der Benutzer vergisst, sich abzumelden. In der Regel sind auf Hotspots eine Benutzerisolierung konfiguriert. Das bedeutet, dass die Daten, die an einen anderen Benutzer des gleichen Hotspots gerichtet sind, nicht weitergeleitet werden und damit der gegenseitige Zugriff auf Netzwerkdienste von Geräten anderer Benutzer unterbunden wird. Allerdings bietet die Benutzerisolierung keinen Schutz gegen das Abhören eigener Daten, da diese von Cyberkriminellen mit sogenannten Sniffer-Programmen auch direkt empfangen werden können. Und da es bei der Nutzung öffentlicher Netzwerke keine absolute Sicherheit gibt, gilt jedoch die Grundregel bestenfalls überhaupt keine vertraulichen Daten über ein fremdes WLAN-Netz abzurufen. Will der Nutzer dennoch surfen, dann sollte er folgende Maßnahmen treffen: Nutzung eines Virtual Private Network (VPN): Durch die Nutzung eines VPN greift der Nutzer über einen verschlüsselten „Tunnel“ auf das Internet zu und verhindert so ein Abfangen von Daten durch einen Dritten. Deaktivierung der automatischen Anmeldung an bekannten WLAN-Hotspots: Durch die Deaktivierung der automatischen Anmeldung an bekannten Hotspots soll verhindert werden, dass Cyberkriminelle durch Benennung ihrer Hotspots nach gängigen Namen wie „Telekom“ oder „Free Wifi“ ein automatisches Einwählen von Nutzern erreichen, um dann deren Zugangsdaten abzugreifen oder den Datenverkehr mitzulesen. Grundsätzliche Deaktivierung der WLAN-Schnittstelle des Endgeräts – Aktivierung nur im Bedarfsfall: Deaktivierung der WLAN-Schnittstelle ist aus zwei verschiedenen Gründen eine wichtige Sicherheitsmaßnahme. Zum einen bietet ein ausgeschaltetes WLAN keine Angriffsfläche und zum anderen kann so das sog. WLAN-Tracking verhindert werden. Deaktivierung von Datei- und Verzeichnisfreigaben: Durch die Deaktivierung von Datei- und Verzeichnisfreigaben wird verhindert, dass das Gerät des Nutzers für andere sichtbar ist. Werden die genannten Maßnahmen zur Sicherung des eigenen Datenverkehrs getroffen, so bewegt man sich bereits deutlich sicherer durch öffentliche Netzstrukturen. Trotzdem sollte man sich im Einzelfall immer zweimal überlegen, ob man mit dem Abrufen und dem Transfer vertraulicher Daten nicht „warten“ kann, bis man sich in einer geschützten Netzwerkumgebung befindet. Bevor wir zum Schluss unseres heutigen Podcast kommen, möchte ich der Vollständigkeit halber noch kurz auf mobile Hotspots eingehen. Grundsätzlich hat es Vorteile, einen mobilen Hotspot einzurichten anstatt einen lokalen Hotspot zu nutzen. Denn lokale Hotspots, wie etwa in einem Café, sind häufig überlastet und haben zudem nur eine bestimmte Reichweite. Mit einem mobilen Hotspot ist man unabhängig von diesen Faktoren. Außerdem bietet ein mobiler Hotspot Sicherheit, da die Daten nicht über das Netzwerk eines öffentlichen lokalen Hotspots fließen, bei dem andere WLAN-Nutzer diese möglicherweise einsehen könnten. Es gibt mehrere Möglichkeiten, um einen mobilen Hotspot einzurichten. Mittels Smartphones: Als mobiler Hotspot baut das Smartphone eine Verbindung mit dem Internet auf und stellt diese anderen Geräten zur Verfügung. Dabei verbindet sich das Smartphone über das Mobilfunknetz mit einem oder mehreren internetfähigen Geräten, etwa Notebooks, PCs, Tablets und anderen Smartphones. Dieser Vorgang nennt sich Tethering. Mittels Mobile WLAN Router/MiFi Router: Hier handelt es sich um kleine Geräte, die sich mit dem mobilen Netz über 2G, 3G oder 4G verbinden und ein WLAN Netzwerk erstellen. Solche MiFi Router sind sehr praktisch, da sie es einem fast überall erlauben, schnell und unkompliziert ins Internet einzusteigen. He is the Dell Exec Sponsor for the UT Cockrell School of Engineering and the UT College of Natural Science. He is also a member of the UT Cockrell School of Engineering Advisory Board. Edgar also describes what WiFi is and how WiFi is playing an increasingly important role in telecom policy. Bio As president and CEO of Wi-Fi Alliance (@WifiAlliance), Edgar Figueroa has led an unprecedented period of growth for Wi-Fi®. Wi-Fi Alliance has grown to more than 700 member companiesUnder Edgar's leadership. He has also maintained an aggressive development roadmap and adopted a vision of “Connecting everyone and everything, everywhere.” Edgar forged numerous strategic partnerships to facilitate penetration of Wi-Fi into established and emerging markets. Edgar also defined the Wi-Fi Alliance Wi-Fi CERTIFIED™ program development framework. He also guided the launch of several generations of interoperable Wi-Fi programs. These programs have proliferated Wi-Fi into mass markets such as mobile and consumer electronics. Resources WiFi Alliance Younger Next Year by Chris Crowley News Roundup SEC warns the public on internet currencies The Securities and Exchange Commission warned the public last week about potential internet currency offering (ICO) scams. Internet currencies like Bitcoin have been on an upward trend lately, with Bitcoin trading at over $4,000. The SEC is worried about companies that prey on the public by "pumping" prices for new products related to internet currencies. China moved on Monday to outlaw internet currency trading. Eugene Kim reports for CNBC. Uber faces bribery law investigation Douglass McMillan reported for the Wall Street Journal last week that the Justice Department has begun a preliminary investigation into Uber's potential violation of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. Uber experienced rapid foreign expansion under former CEO Travis Kalanick, and the DOJ apparently suspects that bribery may have been factor. Uber's new CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, formerly the CEO of Expedia, took the helm of Uber last week. New America Fellow ousted after criticizing Google A New America Foundation scholar was ousted from the think tank after he criticized Google's market dominance. Barry Lynn, who ran New America's Open Market's program, praised the European Union's recent $2.7 billion fine against Google for allegedly favoring its own search results over its competitors. Last week, New America let Lynn go, along with several other staffers. Lynn says Google, which has donated some $21 million to New America in recent years, is pulling the strings. Lynn followed up by launching a separate organization that is "going to make sure Google doesn't get away with this". Kenneth Vogel reports for the New York Times. Tillerson to close State Department cyber division Secretary of State Rex Tillerson announced his plans to close the State Department's cyber division. Tillerson made the revelation in a letter to Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker . The division is responsible for protecting the United States' cyber security interests abroad.  Tillerson says he intends to roll the cyber division into a business and economic affairs bureau. Morgan Chalfant reports in the Hill. Net Neutrality hearing delayed The House Energy & Commerce Committee hearing on net neutrality that was scheduled for September 7th has been delayed. Not a single one of the eight tech companies the Committee invited responded to the invitation to testify. Edward Graham at Morning Consult reports. DHS warns of Harvey scams The Department of Homeland Security warned the public last week about possible scams related to Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. The agency warned about phishing scams and other malicious activity designed to take advantage of good samaritans making email donations.

Steve was one of the early innovators working on the protocol, taking the Wi-Fi interface into the commercial world. He was one of three people to form Silicon Valley Network. They took the ethernet and created the commercial name Wi-Fi. Silicon Valley Network became the Wi-Fi Alliance and Steve would end up selling his company to HP. The latter setup Wi-Fi certification labs. HP would go onto setup digital subscriber.

John Artman: Hello and welcome to this week’s Round Table’s Word of the Week. I’m John Artman. Zhou Heyang: 我是赫扬。欢迎来到这周的英语词汇小百科板块。这周我们来聊一聊Wifi这个词。 John: The term “Wi-Fi” actually was commercially used at least as early as August, 2000 and was actually coined by brand consulting firm called Interbrand Corporation. ZHY: 有人说Wi-Fi是Wireless Fidelity的简称。请问这是事实吗? John: No, actually, it’s not true. Interbrand Corporation was hired by the Wi-Fi Alliance because they needed a name that sounded better than the “IEEE 802.11b direct sequence.” And so what they did was they made a play on words. They said was that “Wi-Fi” is the standard for wireless fidelity. The term right now, Wi-Fi, has nothing whatsoever to do with fidelity. ZHY: Okay, thanks for that explanation. But why is it called “Wi-Fi” and not “weefee?” John: So, wireless fidelity. Again, it’s a play on the word “hifi” and then “Wi-Fi.” ZHY: I guess you need to know the origin to understand how to pronounce it. 在使用Wi-Fi的时候,常常我们会提到“热点”这个词。我们应该怎么说呢? John: Right, and so, in English that’s “hotspot.” Basically, it’s just a wireless access point that usually you use a router to connect to. And so, I think that many of our listeners also understand that a router is just a piece of equipment where you plug it in to the Internet and a wireless router will broadcast a Wi-Fi signal that you can use to connect to your other devices, too. ZHY: John, 你说的是路由器吧。如果要是来使用移动设备共享互联网连接,这个要怎么说呢? John: In English, we call this “tethering.” The idea is is that you have a 3G or 4G enabled device, that can be a smartphone or a tablet with a 3G connection, and you can turn on something called “tethering.” That basically just turns your mobile device into a wireless hotspot.
