The Space Show Presents OPEN LINES, Sunday, 2-15-26Quick SummaryThe Space Show Wisdom Team discussed Elon Musk's decision to pivot SpaceX's focus from Mars to the Moon, examining both technical and business reasons for the shift. Ajay presented technical arguments against Starship's capability to achieve significant payload delivery to orbit, while others debated whether this pivot represented a permanent shift away from Mars colonization goals. The discussion explored potential business motivations, including the need for a public IPO to secure funding for ambitious lunar projects like orbital data centers, and considered how regulatory and legal challenges might impact SpaceX's plans. The panel also examined how this pivot might affect public perception and investor confidence, particularly given Musk's previous statements about prioritizing Mars over the Moon.Detailed SummaryThe Team discussed a recent article by Will Lockett, who critiques Elon Musk's pivot from Mars to the Moon. Ajay found the article on Substack, but most of it is behind a paywall. Phil was able to access the full article with a free account. The group debated Lockett's credentials and the validity of his claims, noting that he is a liberal commentator who has been critical of both Musk and Trump. They also discussed the upcoming schedule for the Space Show, including a program about Shenzhou 20 debris scares and a discussion on spaceports with Karen Jones of the Aerospace Corp. The group discussed a critical article about Starship's performance, where the author labeled it a failure due to boil-off issues that prevent sufficient refueling in orbit for Mars and moon missions. Philip explained that the analysis was based on assumptions including a 1% boil-off rate and weekly launches, with the depot reaching a maximum capacity of 360 tons before becoming a boil-off replenishment system. The discussion explored potential solutions, including the use of cryo-coolers to prevent boil-off, though this would require significant solar panels that could affect orbital decay rates. David provided background on the author, Will Lockett, describing him as a climate and political journalist who critically analyzes various issues, including SpaceX and Elon Musk. The group discussed Starship's payload capabilities, with Phil explaining his analysis of test flight data which suggested Starship could carry 20 tons to orbit, significantly less than the 100 tons claimed by SpaceX. Ajay presented his company's system-of-systems calculations which confirmed the challenges of achieving high payload fractions without multiple refuelings. The discussion clarified that payload capabilities are evolving with each test flight, and Marshall noted that SpaceX's own documentation shows payload capacities increasing from 15 tons for Block 1 to 35 tons for Block 2, with Block 3 targeting 100 tons. The group discussed the challenges and uncertainties associated with the Starship rocket's development, particularly in comparison to the Falcon Heavy. Ajay emphasized the importance of a robust solution, advocating for the Falcon Heavy due to its proven track record and lower risk, despite its lower payload capacity. He expressed concerns about Starship's landing capabilities on the moon and its overall reliability, stating he would not feel comfortable putting astronauts on board even after 2-3 years of development and testing. Phil clarified that astronauts would only be at risk during the descent and landing phase, not the orbital transfer. Doug suggested that successful cargo landings might be a step towards gaining Ajay's confidence in risking human lives. The team discussed concerns about SpaceX's Starship design for lunar missions, particularly its tall and slender shape which Dr. raised as a potential issue for stability during landing. Phil and Doug countered that SpaceX's engineering capabilities and adaptive landing systems could overcome these challenges, while Marshall suggested that emergency abort options could be implemented to prevent tip-over scenarios. The discussion concluded with a debate about SpaceX's strategic pivot to focus on lunar missions rather than Mars, with some participants suggesting this might be due to internal challenges and the need to demonstrate practical business applications to investors, while others noted that this pivot could help solidify SpaceX's hold on the lunar lander system. The group discussed Elon Musk's shift in focus from Mars to the Moon, with John Jossy highlighting practical advantages like frequent launch windows and shorter transit times. Doug explained that Musk's timeline for Mars remains unchanged, with crewed missions still targeted for 2031 or 2033. The discussion also touched on potential lunar business opportunities, such as orbital data centers using lunar regolith, and Bob Zubrin's disappointment with Musk's pivot to the Moon. Philip suggested that Zubrin should have kept his options open and not put too much emphasis on Musk's plans. The group discussed Elon Musk's shift in focus from Mars to the moon, with Ajay arguing that the moon should be prioritized as a testing ground for space colonization before attempting Mars. Philip countered that Mars offers more scientific opportunities and geopolitical significance, while David noted that Musk's decision to align with government moon programs rather than pursue a private Mars mission has surprised many who viewed him as a leader in independent space exploration. The discussion highlighted a shift in public perception about Musk's space ambitions and the broader debate over lunar versus Martian exploration priorities. The group discussed Elon Musk's decision to pivot SpaceX's focus from Mars to the Moon, which David attributed to Musk's experience with public company scrutiny and the upcoming IPO. They explored how Musk's controlling ownership of SpaceX (42%) and Tesla (12.5%) gives him significant influence over both companies, though the potential merger of XAI into SpaceX could change that balance. The discussion concluded that while environmental groups and scientific communities might oppose commercial operations on Mars and the Moon, legal challenges would likely face significant hurdles, though they could potentially increase costs and cause delays for SpaceX.The team discussed SpaceX's pivot from Mars to the Moon, with Marshall and Doug agreeing that this shift could help mitigate legal and environmental concerns surrounding Mars missions. Ryan Watson joined the call and shared his perspective that the economic potential of the Moon makes it a more attractive focus for space exploration. The conversation also covered SpaceX's decision to go public, with David explaining that this move provides liquidity for investors and allows for controlled share releases. Finally, Doug and Phil discussed the technical aspects of mass drivers and the feasibility of producing solar cells from lunar regolith, with Philip offering to present a standalone show on this topic in the future. The group discussed technical challenges and feasibility of launching data centers to the moon using mass drivers, with Doug proposing a compact design of accordion-folded solar panels and a low-mass processing unit. Marshall shared details about the Gerald Ford aircraft carrier electronic catapult system capable of launching at 3G forces, while Bill raised concerns about the structural challenges of deploying solar panels under such acceleration. The discussion concluded with Ajay sharing insights from a recent meeting with a senior advisor to Senator Scott, who expressed interest in space initiatives but raised concerns about launch cadence, and plans for upcoming shows including an interview with astronomer Andy Fraknoi about the lunar eclipse on March 1st.Special thanks to our sponsors:American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Helix Space in Luxembourg, Celestis Memorial Spaceflights, Astrox Corporation, Dr. Haym Benaroya of Rutgers University, The Space Settlement Progress Blog by John Jossy, The Atlantis Project, and Artless EntertainmentOur Toll Free Line for Live Broadcasts: 1-866-687-7223 (Not in service at this time)For real time program participation, email Dr. Space at: drspace@thespaceshow.com for instructions and access.

My guests today are Alex Behring and Daniel Schwartz, Co-Managing Partners of 3G Capital. 3G has built one of the most distinctive firms in investing around a simple idea: there are only a handful of truly great businesses and even fewer great CEOs. Their model is to raise capital with the intention of making just one investment per fund, commit meaningful amounts of their own money alongside their partners, and focus all of their time and best people on that single opportunity. Their approach has produced a series of iconic deals, including Burger King, Tim Hortons, Hunter Douglas, and Skechers. They have also become known for developing talent early, giving young leaders real responsibility and ownership, and holding an unusually high bar. Once you've heard from Alex and Daniel, I highly recommend you read our in-depth profile on them and 3G Capital. They gave our managing editor Dom Cooke unprecedented access and the outcome is an excellent profile about the fifty year history of 3G and how the model began with Jorge Paulo Lemann in Brazil. 40 years the first mobile phone call was made in Ireland, a pivotal moment that began one of the most significant technology transformations in the country's history. On December 11, 1985, the then Minister for Communications, Jim Mitchell TD, phoned broadcaster Pat Kenny. The pair had a brief chat about the broadcaster's Best Dressed Man of The Year award. Since that first analogue call, Ireland has become one of Europe's most advanced digital nations, powered by significant industry investment, best-in-class networks and rapidly evolving digital progress. Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, Patrick O'Donovan TD - who reenacted the call this week with now broadcasting legend Pat Kenny - said that the evolution of telephony and digital communications had been well embraced by Ireland, with its benefits reaching into almost every corner of the economy and society today: "Given the recessionary environment here in 1985 it was a significant feat for Telecom Éireann to invest into a new telecommunications market, 40 years ago. Within a decade, market competition really grew and now, incredibly, there are five million smartphone users in Ireland. "If we add that to the parallel revolution in broadband - including the State's successful National Broadband Plan rollout - and major investment by the providers themselves, networks and connectivity are really high quality, which enables more innovation and job creation." Four Decades of Progress Telecom Eireann entered the world of mobile telephony in 1984 after receiving a licence from the Department of Communications. Eircell was launched in 1985, and the first mobile call took place on its network. In the years that followed, Ireland moved through major mobile milestones: 1985: Eircell was launched in greater Dublin area only and network had capacity for only 1,000 customers 1987: Expansion of network to Cork and Limerick 1990: Eircell had 11,300 customers approx. with high cost (device, quarterly rental charge, high cost per minute calls, set up and connection fee) 1993: First digital GSM network launches, introducing SMS and SIM cards 1996-1997: Market competition accelerates mobile adoption 2000: Vodafone enters the market and buys Eircell, enabling new technologies and innovative concepts to grow 2001: 3G spectrum licences issued 2008: iPhone launches in Ireland, ushering in the smartphone era 2025: There are three primary Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) that own and operate the network infrastructure in Ireland including Three, Eir Mobile and Vodafone. In addition, there are virtual MNOs including Virgin Mobile, Tesco Mobile, An Post Mobile, Sky Mobile, GoMo, Lycamobile, Sky Mobile, Clear Mobile and 48. Telecommunications Industry Ireland (TII) are the Ibec representative body for the sector, that also includes cable and fixed, tower companies, network providers and equipment manufacturers. TII Director Nicola Cooke said a recent economic and social impact study completed by Ibec showed just how dynamic the sector is: "There has been €5bn in network capital investment by the industry over the last eight years, in addition to €2.7bn in annual spend with suppliers in Ireland. The telecoms sector - which provides direct employment to 24,000 people in Ireland - is also a huge enabler of the economy and wider society, bring connectivity across the whole country. "Telecoms is one of the few services where consumer prices are now lower that they were 10 years ago, and that is down to major competition in the market, with a huge range of choice and dozens of packages on offer. The fact that around 99% of the population can avail of 4G and 5G is also testament to the commitment and financing, provided by our members. "Ireland has come a long, long way since that first call 40 years ago, and we are now among the most progressive countries in terms of our digital transformation, sitting in fifth place among 27 countries on the EU digital index." The era of 3G is ending. For many industrial businesses, smart infrastructure systems, remote device management, and IoT connectivity rely on networks that are now being phased out globally. The question isn't if—but when your operations could be disrupted. In this episode of Tech Transformed, Trisha Pillay speaks with Jana Vidis, Business Development Manager at IFB, about the worldwide 3G sunset, what it means for enterprises, and how proactive planning can prevent costly disruptions. They explore the reasons behind the transition to 4G and 5G, the impact on various industries, and the strategies organisations can implement to assess their reliance on legacy devices. Why the 3G Sunset Matters3G networks have powered connectivity for decades, offering wide coverage and reliability. But as global operators move to 4G and 5G, maintaining 3G is no longer sustainable. Carriers are discontinuing services, and support is dwindling, leaving legacy devices vulnerable to:Operational downtimeInconsistent performanceIncreased security risksJana emphasises:“Have a good understanding of what devices you have. Work with IT partners to prepare for future changes. Plan your transition and act before disruption hits.”Jana also stressed the importance of understanding current technology deployments, planning for transitions, and future-proofing investments to avoid disruptions. The conversation highlights the need for proactive measures in adapting to technological advancements and ensuring operational continuity.A Global TimelineThe transition is already well underway across multiple regions:North America: AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile 3G networks discontinued in February 2022; Canada's shutdown begins in early 2025.Europe: Most countries, including the UK, Germany, Hungary, and Greece, will complete shutdowns by the end of 2025.Asia: Japan phased out 3G in 2022, Singapore in July 2024, and India plans completion by the end of 2025.Africa: South Africa started in July 2025; other countries are slowing the transition.South America: Providers like Telefonica, Entel, and Claro completed shutdowns in 2022–2023.Middle East: Oman started shutting down in July 2024; Zain Bahrain in Q4 2022; Kuwait, Iran, and Jordan are following.Industrial devices still using 3G must transition now to avoid operational disruption. From smart infrastructure to remote IoT systems, legacy devices left unaddressed can cause downtime, inconsistent performance, and increased security risks.Takeaways3G networks are being phased out to enable 4G and 5G development.Businesses must assess their reliance on 3G devices before shutdowns.Legacy devices can

In this reflective solo episode, I trace the unlikely path from my first day as a completely green 1.3G crew member—wet behind the ears, overwhelmed, and instantly hooked—to becoming a podcaster trusted by voices from every corner of the fireworks world. What started as lugging racks and learning safety basics became a journey fueled by curiosity, connection, and the simple power of saying “yes” when opportunities appeared. You'll hear how conversations on show sites turned into friendships, how friendships turned into interviews, and how those interviews opened doors I never imagined I'd walk through. From mentors and industry legends to innovators, hobbyists, and regulators, every person I met became a guidepost on the road from rookie to insider. This episode is a reminder that in fireworks—and in life—the biggest sparks often come from the smallest conversations. Few companies better embody the promise and peril of China's rise than Huawei. For nearly three decades, Huawei has steadily climbed towards the peak of the global telecommunications industry—first as a supplier of telecom infrastructure, then as a maker of smartphones, and more recently as a driving force behind Chinese ambitions in 5G, semiconductors, and artificial intelligence. Huawei's ascent has also made it a prime target of U.S. sanctions, export controls, and political pressure. Since the early 2000s, Huawei has faced repeated confrontations with American economic power—from losing access to markets in Iraq and Iran, to getting shut out of 3G and 4G buildouts in the U.S. and Europe, to becoming a central focus of the Trump-era trade war with China. On this episode, we discuss Huawei with the reporter who knows the company best. Eva Dou is a tech policy reporter at The Washington Post. Prior to joining the Post, Eva spent seven years reporting on politics and technology for the Wall Street Journal in Beijing and Taipei. Earlier this year, she published House of Huawei, a deeply reported account of the rise of China's most successful technology company and its enigmatic founder, Ren Zhengfei. House of Huawei has been Shortlisted for the Financial Times Business Book of the Year. The Sanctions Age is hosted by Esfandyar Batmanghelidj. This 35 are property, right in the middle of Bradenton has an existing Charter School on 11 of those acres and 24 acres of land that we are developing. We are hosting a webinar on Wednesday October 8 at 7PM Eastern time. This opportunity is only open to accredited investors residing in the US in compliance with SEC regulations. To learn more, click on the link in the show notes and we will see you on Wednesday evening at 7PM. --------------On today's show we are looking back in history for some of the narratives that surrounded the adoption of new technology. The year was 1999. At the time, it seemed like the internet was the answer, what's the question? Companies were spending hundreds of millions burying optical fibre anywhere they could. After all, the internet would need lots of fibre to carry all of that traffic. There was tons of investment in the core of the network to carry all of this traffic. I personally was an executive in the tech industry. I left Nortel in 1997. The next company I was at was Tundra Semiconductor. We were designing microprocessor core logic chips that were used in all kinds of applications. One of our customers was Motorola who was shipping 250,000 cellular base stations a year. These would eventually be upgraded from the GSM base station to the Edge base station and then eventually the 3G base station. Back in those days, the emphasis was on building out the core of the network.Later in my career I took progressively more senior positions in the tech industry. By 2004 I was VP of Engineering at AMCC that was headquartered in San Diego. I was also President of AMCC Canada. My company had raised about $1B in the public markets at the height of the Dotcom frenzy. As a result, we had all kinds of startup companies parading through our board room with the hopes of getting acquired by a company with a ton of cash. I learned to ask three very simple questions of every startup company. The answer to these questions revealed more than anything else. The technology, the features, the cool factor, none of it mattered. -------------**Real Estate Espresso Podcast:** Spotify: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](https://open.spotify.com/show/3GvtwRmTq4r3es8cbw8jW0?si=c75ea506a6694ef1) iTunes: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-real-estate-espresso-podcast/id1340482613) Website: [www.victorjm.com](http://www.victorjm.com) LinkedIn: [Victor Menasce](http://www.linkedin.com/in/vmenasce) YouTube: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](http://www.youtube.com/@victorjmenasce6734) Facebook: [www.facebook.com/realestateespresso](http://www.facebook.com/realestateespresso) Email: [podcast@victorjm.com](mailto:podcast@victorjm.com) **Y Street Capital:** Website: [www.ystreetcapital.com](http://www.ystreetcapital.com) Facebook: [www.facebook.com/YStreetCapital](https://www.facebook.com/YStreetCapital) Instagram: [@ystreetcapital](http://www.instagram.com/ystreetcapital)
More than one-third of farmers say their mobile coverage has gotten worse over the past year - and it's negatively impacting their work environment and overall safety. New reports show only 57 percent of farmland gets coverage, and there's been no improvement since 2022. Federated Farmers telecommunications spokesperson Mark Hooper says the situation is likely to get worse with the 3G network shutting down, and they're trying to get a handle on things. Spurred by Alistair Beggs' warning on chemicals and heavy soils, the lads pull apart a model that turns a failed 18 into a free‑draining nine plus a range, 3G football, padel, a Himalayas‑style putting green, nature trails and a buzzy food court—keeping green fees closer to £35 than £350 by letting the profitable bits subsidise the golf. Plus, if the U.S. government needs a Microsoft BI subscription to speed up their shelter data, Chris offers to cover it himself. That's service.

A barrage of tariffs are foisted onto the automotive marketplace and throw a wrench into the car importing business (including Derek's OTS and Co.). Are used cars affected? Not even ChatGPT knows. Jason wants to file a class action suit against VW for sunsetting 3G functionality in Mk7 cars, and Jay Leno puts his name behind California SB 712 to reduce the smog check burden on California-based classic car owners. We'll start off with 1980s turbocharged lag-mobiles: the Saab 99 Turbo, BMW 2002 Turbo, and Porsche 930. At the time, Lotus deemed this power curve and response time unacceptable and managed to create a significantly better turbocharged experience in the Esprit Turbo. So good in fact that it may be on par with the W124 Mercedes-Benz 300E with a Mosselman twin-turbo setup that Jason recently drove. Next, Jason thinks a class action lawsuit is in order against VW of America. That's because after 3G cell networks were shut down in 2022, VW failed to maintain the functionality of its Car-Net app that allowed for remote lock/unlock, cabin pre-heating, break-in alerts, charging start/stop and automatic crash notifications. Now, 3 years later, VW has admitted defeat, and has told owners that no fix will be provided. This is quite different from Tesla's approach, who called in owners and upgraded their modems to run on the newer networks. Derek also notes the class action lawsuit against Mercedes when it was discovered that the clear coat on their Mars Red paint didn't last. Then we dive into the tariff chaos. Mainly the 25% tax on all imported automobiles, which may be permanent like the “chicken tax” on imported trucks, or it may last a few hours? Does it apply to used vehicles? No one is sure. But Derek wasn't waiting around to find out when OTS was facing a $700,000 duty on a car it was actively importing for a client. Ronald Reagan briefly weighs in on the effectiveness of tariffs, and EU-allergic Switzerland enters the chat. Plus Ford and Mercedes-Benz both have extensive experience evading tariffs from their time importing non-tariffed “passenger” vans into the States, only to have their technicians immediately convert them into cargo trucks by removing the seats and windows then shipping the pieces back to Europe for the next batch. We'll also cover various shipping methods (container vs "RoRo") as both Derek and Jason have experienced shipping cars overseas – both Derek's W116 and W124 wagon made the voyage across the Atlantic, as did Jason's E30 Touring and 190E 2.3-16. We'll talk Boeing 747 8F cargo planes, RoRo cargo ships, 20- and 40-foot containers, and all of their associated pros, cons and costs. We'll also dive into the used car market and recent auction results. Why are similar cars fetching wildly different prices at major auctions and on websites like Bring A Trailer? Derek and Jason both weigh in on the factors at play, including two recent BMW 850CSi sales. Lastly, we'll touch on California SB712, now nicknamed Leno's Law. A new law working its way through the California legislature that aims to reduce the smog check burden on classic car owners and collectors (as well as the repair shops burdened with maintaining dynamometers for a dwindling pool of cars requiring one for proper smog testing).
