Commercial tire retreading still carries a few stubborn myths, and Shaun Uys, Head of Replacement Commercial Tires at Continental Tire, says it's time to clear them up.In this episode of What's Treading, Uys explains why drivers see “road gators” on the highway. He says failed retreads usually do not cause them. He also explains why a properly managed retread process can match a new tire's performance. Then, he breaks down Continental's 3G casing approach. This approach gives fleets a stronger platform for multiple retread cycles when they properly maintain tires.Uys also discusses the technology and quality checks behind Continental's retreading process. He covers casing inspection, buff angles, curing cycles, cushion gum and AI-supported analysis. For tire dealers working with fleets, he explains how retreads can lower tire costs. He also explains how retreads can extend casing value and support a more complete tire program. Uys says when fleets can reuse a casing multiple times, the cost savings can be “really significant.”www.tirereview.com/subscribe

What if uncertainty isn't the problem — it's that you haven't learned to tell the difference between what can change and what can't change? In this episode, Daniel Burrus, one of the world's leading futurists and a New York Times bestselling author of seven books, shares the framework he has used for four decades to predict technological change with remarkable accuracy. From describing Netflix in 1993 to advising the Department of Defense and Fortune 500 companies on AI strategy, Daniel has built a reputation as someone who doesn't just see what's coming; he teaches others how to see it too. As CEO of Burrus Research and creator of the Anticipatory Organization model, Daniel's work has one core goal: help people find certainty in an uncertain world so they can make bold moves, presolve problems, and shape their own destiny. And in an age where AI is reshaping every industry, that ability has never been more valuable. [00:04:40] What He Does and Who He Serves Runs Burrus Research, a firm monitoring global innovations across AI, robotics, genetics, fiber optics, and more Has been doing this work for four decades, starting out as a biology and physics teacher Serves Fortune 500 companies, the Department of Defense, and entrepreneurs worldwide Works as a translator: takes complex technology trends and makes them actionable for anyone [00:05:20] The Science of Certainty Uncertainty causes hesitation; certainty drives bold moves and big decisions Accurately predicted Netflix, Amazon, and smartphones in his 1993 book Techno Trends Has authored seven books including New York Times bestseller Flash Foresight and Amazon number one bestseller The Anticipatory Organization His goal is not just to share trends but to teach a repeatable process anyone can use [00:08:20] Hard Trends vs. Soft Trends All trends fall into two categories: hard trends based on future facts that cannot be changed, and soft trends based on assumptions that may or may not happen Hard trends let you see disruptions before they hit and presolve problems before they occur Soft trends are changeable; if you don't like one, you can influence it The litmus test: can this trend be stopped or changed? If not, it is a hard trend [00:13:40] The Three Categories of Hard Trends Technology is a hard trend category: wireless went from 3G to 4G to 5G and will keep accelerating Demographics is a hard trend category: 10,000 Americans turn 70 every single day and that is not reversing Government regulation around areas like cybersecurity is a hard trend category regardless of the current political climate Combining two hard trend categories, like demographics and technology, is how low-risk, high-reward innovations are born [00:15:00] Billion-Dollar Ideas Hidden in Hard Trends There is currently no easy-launch boat trailer designed for aging seniors, despite a massive and growing market of older boaters An exoskeleton designed for seniors could prevent the falls that lead to broken hips, one of the leading causes of death in older adults A small Bluetooth sensor attached to a shoe and linked to a hearing aid could warn seniors of steps, obstacles, and uneven surfaces All three ideas are grounded in demographic hard trends that are already certain [00:25:40] The Skip It Principle: Your Problem Is Not Your Problem Whatever you think your biggest problem is, that is not it; you are working the wrong problem Drill down by asking why two or three times until you find the real, solvable problem underneath A drug company CEO thought he needed 2,000 PhD researchers; the real problem was unsolved molecular challenges, solved by crowdsourcing solutions globally online The makers of Jaws couldn't make the shark look real, so they skipped that problem and showed the shark's perspective instead; the rest is cinema history [00:33:00] AI: Hard Trend, Not a Threat AI getting more powerful is a hard trend; it cannot be stopped or reversed AI gets you 80% of the way to any task fast, but the human 20% is where trust, relationships, creativity, and judgment live Letting AI do everything makes you obsolete; using it to eliminate busy work frees you to do higher-level, more meaningful work Think of AI as a magnifier, not a replacer [00:36:40] What AI Means for CPAs and Every Other Industry Has been contracted by the global accounting association AICPA to map out what 2040 looks like for the profession Tax preparation and auditing will be fully automated, but CPAs will not disappear; their role will shift to anticipatory problem solving and trusted advisory No industry will be decimated; every industry will be redefined and reinvented The mistake is waiting to be replaced; the opportunity is reinventing yourself now with a more consultative, forward-looking skill set [00:43:00] Shape Your Own Destiny Ask yourself what parts of your current work are repetitive and could be handled by AI Use hard trends to identify what your future role needs to look like, and start learning those things now Download his free 25 Tech Trends Report at www.25techtrendsreport.com Download his free AI Strategy Report, with top AI tools across categories and real company case studies, at www.aistrategyreport.com KEY QUOTES "When you're uncertain, you hesitate. When you have high levels of certainty, you write the big check, you make the bold move." — Daniel Burrus "AI is not good at establishing trust. AI is not good at relationships. With the visit of Bhante Ariyananda coming up, Ajahn Dhammasiha reminds us all: When it comes to listening to Dhamma, it's not about quantity of input. It's about quality, and in particular about the quality of the mind of the listener. Many of us have heard the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta (First Discourse of Buddha) receited many times. But did we have the vision of Dhamma arising, did we attain stream entry like Ven. Aññā Kondañña did while listening to it only once? All the listening and reading and studying will not lead to awakening if the mind is not ready. We have to reduce the hindrances/defilements (nīvaraṇā), and increase the spiritual faculties (indriya), to boost our pāramī up to a level sufficient that we can realize the Dhamma we hear of contemplate. Like a 3G phone will not be able to connec to 5G signals, we won't be able to comprehend the Dhamma on a deep level if the foundations are still too week. Rhys and Jesse kick off a two‑part deep dive into how Tim Hortons went from a beloved Canadian community hub to something that feels strangely empty. They start with personal nostalgia: Jesse's memories of the late‑90s Tim Hortons as a true “third place” where you'd just show up and see who was there, playing cards, smoking in the glassed‑off section, and chatting for hours. Rhys compares that to the role pubs used to play in the UK, and together they explore how those informal social spaces have eroded over time, feeding into a wider loneliness problem. From there, Rhys walks through the early history of Tim Hortons: NHL defenceman Tim Horton's partnership with Jim Charade, the rise of franchising, the pivotal role of ex‑cop and Dairy Queen franchisee Ron Joyce, Horton's death and struggles with alcoholism, and the complicated saga of his widow Lori's buyout, lawsuits, and the question of what would have been the “right” thing to do for the family and the brand. The episode then traces Tim Hortons' expansion through its merger with Wendy's, its growth into Canada's largest fast‑food chain, and the political optics of Prime Minister Stephen Harper celebrating its return to Canadian ownership. Finally, Rhys introduces 3G Capital, the Brazilian‑rooted investment firm that has built a global empire by acquiring brands like Burger King and Kraft Heinz, then aggressively cutting costs, closing plants, and boosting profit margins while hollowing out quality, staff security, and community connection. With Tim Hortons' 2014 sale to 3G's Restaurant Brands International, the stage is set for the “hollowing” of a nostalgic brand Canadians once saw as their national living room. For premium content, socials, merch, to leave a voicemail or message us go to canadaisboring.com Hosted on Acast. A Kent dad who lives in Abu Dhabi has told the podcast about the moment he was alerted to potential missile strikes. Justin Cooke received a message on his phone shortly before seeing puffs of smoke in the sky as the missiles were intercepted. The retaliatory strikes on Saturday followed an attack by America and Israel on Iran which killed the country's leader. Also in today's episode, the head of the Met Police says he's fiercely committed to restoring trust, five years on from the murder of Sarah Everard. The Space Show Presents OPEN LINES, Sunday, 2-15-26Quick SummaryThe Space Show Wisdom Team discussed Elon Musk's decision to pivot SpaceX's focus from Mars to the Moon, examining both technical and business reasons for the shift. Ajay presented technical arguments against Starship's capability to achieve significant payload delivery to orbit, while others debated whether this pivot represented a permanent shift away from Mars colonization goals. The discussion explored potential business motivations, including the need for a public IPO to secure funding for ambitious lunar projects like orbital data centers, and considered how regulatory and legal challenges might impact SpaceX's plans. The panel also examined how this pivot might affect public perception and investor confidence, particularly given Musk's previous statements about prioritizing Mars over the Moon.Detailed SummaryThe Team discussed a recent article by Will Lockett, who critiques Elon Musk's pivot from Mars to the Moon. Ajay found the article on Substack, but most of it is behind a paywall. Phil was able to access the full article with a free account. The group debated Lockett's credentials and the validity of his claims, noting that he is a liberal commentator who has been critical of both Musk and Trump. They also discussed the upcoming schedule for the Space Show, including a program about Shenzhou 20 debris scares and a discussion on spaceports with Karen Jones of the Aerospace Corp. The group discussed a critical article about Starship's performance, where the author labeled it a failure due to boil-off issues that prevent sufficient refueling in orbit for Mars and moon missions. Philip explained that the analysis was based on assumptions including a 1% boil-off rate and weekly launches, with the depot reaching a maximum capacity of 360 tons before becoming a boil-off replenishment system. The discussion explored potential solutions, including the use of cryo-coolers to prevent boil-off, though this would require significant solar panels that could affect orbital decay rates. David provided background on the author, Will Lockett, describing him as a climate and political journalist who critically analyzes various issues, including SpaceX and Elon Musk. The group discussed Starship's payload capabilities, with Phil explaining his analysis of test flight data which suggested Starship could carry 20 tons to orbit, significantly less than the 100 tons claimed by SpaceX. Ajay presented his company's system-of-systems calculations which confirmed the challenges of achieving high payload fractions without multiple refuelings. The discussion clarified that payload capabilities are evolving with each test flight, and Marshall noted that SpaceX's own documentation shows payload capacities increasing from 15 tons for Block 1 to 35 tons for Block 2, with Block 3 targeting 100 tons. The group discussed the challenges and uncertainties associated with the Starship rocket's development, particularly in comparison to the Falcon Heavy. Ajay emphasized the importance of a robust solution, advocating for the Falcon Heavy due to its proven track record and lower risk, despite its lower payload capacity. He expressed concerns about Starship's landing capabilities on the moon and its overall reliability, stating he would not feel comfortable putting astronauts on board even after 2-3 years of development and testing. Phil clarified that astronauts would only be at risk during the descent and landing phase, not the orbital transfer. Doug suggested that successful cargo landings might be a step towards gaining Ajay's confidence in risking human lives. The team discussed concerns about SpaceX's Starship design for lunar missions, particularly its tall and slender shape which Dr. raised as a potential issue for stability during landing. Phil and Doug countered that SpaceX's engineering capabilities and adaptive landing systems could overcome these challenges, while Marshall suggested that emergency abort options could be implemented to prevent tip-over scenarios. The discussion concluded with a debate about SpaceX's strategic pivot to focus on lunar missions rather than Mars, with some participants suggesting this might be due to internal challenges and the need to demonstrate practical business applications to investors, while others noted that this pivot could help solidify SpaceX's hold on the lunar lander system. The group discussed Elon Musk's shift in focus from Mars to the Moon, with John Jossy highlighting practical advantages like frequent launch windows and shorter transit times. Doug explained that Musk's timeline for Mars remains unchanged, with crewed missions still targeted for 2031 or 2033. The discussion also touched on potential lunar business opportunities, such as orbital data centers using lunar regolith, and Bob Zubrin's disappointment with Musk's pivot to the Moon. Philip suggested that Zubrin should have kept his options open and not put too much emphasis on Musk's plans. The group discussed Elon Musk's shift in focus from Mars to the moon, with Ajay arguing that the moon should be prioritized as a testing ground for space colonization before attempting Mars. Philip countered that Mars offers more scientific opportunities and geopolitical significance, while David noted that Musk's decision to align with government moon programs rather than pursue a private Mars mission has surprised many who viewed him as a leader in independent space exploration. The discussion highlighted a shift in public perception about Musk's space ambitions and the broader debate over lunar versus Martian exploration priorities. The group discussed Elon Musk's decision to pivot SpaceX's focus from Mars to the Moon, which David attributed to Musk's experience with public company scrutiny and the upcoming IPO. They explored how Musk's controlling ownership of SpaceX (42%) and Tesla (12.5%) gives him significant influence over both companies, though the potential merger of XAI into SpaceX could change that balance. The discussion concluded that while environmental groups and scientific communities might oppose commercial operations on Mars and the Moon, legal challenges would likely face significant hurdles, though they could potentially increase costs and cause delays for SpaceX.The team discussed SpaceX's pivot from Mars to the Moon, with Marshall and Doug agreeing that this shift could help mitigate legal and environmental concerns surrounding Mars missions. Ryan Watson joined the call and shared his perspective that the economic potential of the Moon makes it a more attractive focus for space exploration. The conversation also covered SpaceX's decision to go public, with David explaining that this move provides liquidity for investors and allows for controlled share releases. Finally, Doug and Phil discussed the technical aspects of mass drivers and the feasibility of producing solar cells from lunar regolith, with Philip offering to present a standalone show on this topic in the future. The group discussed technical challenges and feasibility of launching data centers to the moon using mass drivers, with Doug proposing a compact design of accordion-folded solar panels and a low-mass processing unit. Marshall shared details about the Gerald Ford aircraft carrier electronic catapult system capable of launching at 3G forces, while Bill raised concerns about the structural challenges of deploying solar panels under such acceleration. The discussion concluded with Ajay sharing insights from a recent meeting with a senior advisor to Senator Scott, who expressed interest in space initiatives but raised concerns about launch cadence, and plans for upcoming shows including an interview with astronomer Andy Fraknoi about the lunar eclipse on March 1st.Special thanks to our sponsors:American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Helix Space in Luxembourg, Celestis Memorial Spaceflights, Astrox Corporation, Dr. Haym Benaroya of Rutgers University, The Space Settlement Progress Blog by John Jossy, The Atlantis Project, and Artless EntertainmentOur Toll Free Line for Live Broadcasts: 1-866-687-7223 (Not in service at this time)For real time program participation, email Dr. Space at: drspace@thespaceshow.com for instructions and access.

My guests today are Alex Behring and Daniel Schwartz, Co-Managing Partners of 3G Capital. 3G has built one of the most distinctive firms in investing around a simple idea: there are only a handful of truly great businesses and even fewer great CEOs. Their model is to raise capital with the intention of making just one investment per fund, commit meaningful amounts of their own money alongside their partners, and focus all of their time and best people on that single opportunity. Their approach has produced a series of iconic deals, including Burger King, Tim Hortons, Hunter Douglas, and Skechers. They have also become known for developing talent early, giving young leaders real responsibility and ownership, and holding an unusually high bar. Once you've heard from Alex and Daniel, I highly recommend you read our in-depth profile on them and 3G Capital. They gave our managing editor Dom Cooke unprecedented access and the outcome is an excellent profile about the fifty year history of 3G and how the model began with Jorge Paulo Lemann in Brazil. In this episode, we catch up with Tom Hartmann – tour manager of the GKA Kite World Tour, Wingfoil World Tour, and founder of the brand-new Surf Foil World Tour (SFT) – fresh from the biggest water sports spectacle the Middle East has ever seen in Abu Dhabi and now chasing the final Kite World Tour stops in Brazil.Tom takes us behind the scenes of the massive nine-day Abu Dhabi event on the soon-to-be “Miami Beach of the Gulf” (Fahid Island), where kite big air, wingfoil racing, e-foil, and wakefoil all shared the spotlight, 2,500+ spectators showed up on weekends, and the whole thing was broadcast live on TV across the region. With €10,000 prize money per SFT discipline, perfect glassy morning conditions, and a level of organization that left athletes speechless, this was the perfect season finale for the inaugural Surf Foil World Tour.- Abu Dhabi deep dive – why foiling (e-foil, wakefoil, wing, kite, surf, pump) is exploding in the Gulf and how the event showcased every flavor of the sport.- E-foil racing at the highest level yet – Justin Chait remains undefeated in 2025, Agnes takes the women's division, and we talk 3G corners, wingtip-out carving, and why technical skill still beats raw speed.- Wakefoil's breakout moment – first fully independent SFT wakefoil comp, drone + boat broadcasting magic, and why wakefoiling could be the most spectator-friendly foiling discipline out there.- The massive growth nobody saw coming – from a hopeful start to nine events worldwide in year one, with a 2026 calendar dropping in the next couple weeks.- What's next for SFT in 2026 – more surf foil, downwind, wakefoil, the return of the epic indoor Düsseldorf pump & wing event, and a brand-new Foil Assist discipline that mixes propulsion take-offs with pure pumping sections.- Plus Tom's love for açaí bowls at Brazilian sunset and maybe sneaking in some surf trips to Nicaragua or Costa Rica before heading home.Year one of the Surf Foil World Tour is officially in the books and it's safe to say foiling just went global – big budgets, big crowds, and bigger stoke. Here's to 2026 being even wilder.Follow the Surf Foil Tour → https://www.surffoiltour.com

The year was 1999. At the time, it seemed like the internet was the answer, what's the question? Companies were spending hundreds of millions burying optical fibre anywhere they could. After all, the internet would need lots of fibre to carry all of that traffic. There was tons of investment in the core of the network to carry all of this traffic. I personally was an executive in the tech industry. I left Nortel in 1997. The next company I was at was Tundra Semiconductor. We were designing microprocessor core logic chips that were used in all kinds of applications. One of our customers was Motorola who was shipping 250,000 cellular base stations a year. These would eventually be upgraded from the GSM base station to the Edge base station and then eventually the 3G base station. Back in those days, the emphasis was on building out the core of the network.Later in my career I took progressively more senior positions in the tech industry. By 2004 I was VP of Engineering at AMCC that was headquartered in San Diego. I was also President of AMCC Canada. My company had raised about $1B in the public markets at the height of the Dotcom frenzy. As a result, we had all kinds of startup companies parading through our board room with the hopes of getting acquired by a company with a ton of cash. I learned to ask three very simple questions of every startup company. The answer to these questions revealed more than anything else. The technology, the features, the cool factor, none of it mattered. -------------**Real Estate Espresso Podcast:** Spotify: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](https://open.spotify.com/show/3GvtwRmTq4r3es8cbw8jW0?si=c75ea506a6694ef1) iTunes: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-real-estate-espresso-podcast/id1340482613) Website: [www.victorjm.com](http://www.victorjm.com) LinkedIn: [Victor Menasce](http://www.linkedin.com/in/vmenasce) YouTube: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](http://www.youtube.com/@victorjmenasce6734) Facebook: [www.facebook.com/realestateespresso](http://www.facebook.com/realestateespresso) Email: [podcast@victorjm.com](mailto:podcast@victorjm.com) **Y Street Capital:** Website: [www.ystreetcapital.com](http://www.ystreetcapital.com) Facebook: [www.facebook.com/YStreetCapital](https://www.facebook.com/YStreetCapital) Instagram: [@ystreetcapital](http://www.instagram.com/ystreetcapital)
