Enabling a world where everyone and everything can be intelligently connected. That's the mission of our guest for today Qualcomm Technologies.  Founded in 1985, Qualcomm is a semiconductor designer and an innovator in wireless communications technologies. The firm relies on third party manufacturers like TSMC and Globalfoundries to make chips, which are then sold to smartphone makers.  While it is not a hardware firm, Qualcomm still transforms the way we work, live and communicate through its processors and modems.  Take your Samsung Galaxy phones powered using Qualcomm Technologies' 5G connectivity solutions, or even the technologies behind the smart and connected factories that make the items we consume.  The firm is perhaps closer to us than we think. But with preliminary data from the International Data Corporation showing worldwide smartphone shipments declined 0.1 per cent on-year to 302.8 million units in the third quarter of 2023, what bearing will this have on Qualcomm Technologies' business?  Meanwhile, Qualcomm Technologies said in May that it is transitioning from a communications company to an “intelligent edge computing” firm. But to what extent has that got to do with the rise in Generative AI?  On Under the Radar, The Evening Runway's finance presenter Chua Tian Tian posed these questions to Ehsanul Islam, VP Engineering & Regional Head of Qualcomm Technologies SEA.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

He helped develop some of the first standalone VR headsets in 2016 using Qualcomm's Snapdragon processor. Since then, Qualcomm has launched over 80 XR devices using their technology.   Hugo explains Qualcomm's role as an ecosystem enabler, developing the silicon, connectivity, reference designs and tools needed for partners to build XR hardware and software. Key focus areas include perception technologies like tracking and environment understanding, which allow for more immersive experiences.   For the metaverse vision to become reality, Hugo emphasizes the need for open standards and interoperability. He sees the recently announced Meta Quest Pro and Apple Vision AR headsets as validating the market potential. Products like Meta's Quest 3 will help make immersive computing accessible to more consumers.   Hugo remains optimistic that we'll see major advances in AR, VR and MR hardware over the next 2-3 years. While sleek, lightweight AR glasses are still 5+ years away, he sees a path for incremental improvements across smart glasses, mobile AR integration and other form factors in the near term.  ==== Have any comments or questions?   Email the show Feedback@Buildingtheopenmetaverse.org Want more information? Visit our website www.buildingtheopenmetaverse.org And make sure you follow us on Linkedin for all of our show updates   https://www.linkedin.com/company/buildingtheopenmetaverse

Show #1455 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily, you trusted source of EV information. It's Wednesday 4th May, it's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. VW'S 2022 SUPPLY OF EVS IS ‘BASICALLY SOLD OUT' IN THE US AND EUROPE - Volkswagen's CEO, Herbert Diess, says that the company is “basically sold out on electric vehicles in Europe and in the United States” for the year, according to a report from the Financial Times. This means that anyone hoping to get an EV from VW, Audi, or any of the group's other brands may have to wait until 2023, as the company tries to navigate the chip shortage and production issues from COVID shutdowns in China. - According to the report, VW expects its backlog of orders to keep growing. It currently has plenty of people on the list waiting to get an EV and expects to add more throughout the year. - According to the Financial Times, VW sold just under 100,000 electric cars in Q1 2022. Tesla, according to its latest earnings, sold around 310,000 in the same time period. - When Diess spoke to The Verge earlier this year, he said that the company is trying to grow its presence in America. In his Decoder interview, he said that he expected the company's growth in the States to “mostly come from EVs,” though he did admit the company would likely see supply constraints throughout 2022. Original Source : https://www.theverge.com/2022/5/4/23057268/volkswagen-vw-electric-cars-sold-out-supply-chain VOLKSWAGEN SOLD ~99K EVS OUT OF 1.9M IN Q1 - Volkswagen recently released its January-March 2022 interim report, reporting 1.9 million vehicle sales and deliveries in the first quarter. VW's all-electric vehicle sales and deliveries made up 5.2% of total deliveries, amounting to 99,064 EVs. - Volkswagen is specifically interested in growing in the United States with plans to build a dedicated battery cell production factory in the country. The German automaker announced a $1.7 billion commitment to boosting its BEV product lineup, R&D, and manufacturing in North America. - The legacy automaker aims to achieve 10% market share in North America by 2030 as it bolsters expansion in global growth markets. Battery-electric vehicles are central to its goals. VW plans to have more than 25 electric vehicles in its BEV portfolio by the end of the decade. Since its unveiling, it has gained momentum with global automakers and Tier 1 suppliers worldwide for its robust capabilities. It's also being adopted by BMW. - In March, Volkswagen announced the addition of anonymous "swarm data" from other Volkswagen vehicles to help its advanced driver assist systems make better decisions over time, such as performing automatic lane changes. The addition of swarm data marks the next step towards vehicle systems that support fully-automated driving, according to Volkswagen. - Among its features, it can automatically keep the vehicle in the center of the lane, but can also adapt to an individual's driving style, including driving further to the left or right of the lane instead of exactly in the middle. Retail sales were down 12.3%, for the month. Trucks sales were down 17.8% to 79,768. SUVs were up 2.7% to 92,809. Sales of Ford electric vehicles increased 139 percent over last year on the strength of Mustang Mach-E and E-Transit sales. Original Source : https://www.nasdaq.com/articles/ford-motor-april-u.s.-vehicle-sales-down-10.5-electric-vehicle-sales-up-139 MUSTANG MACH-E GETS BOOST - Ford's Mustang Mach-E receives a boost in braked towing capacity to 1,000 kg for extended range models in both rear wheel drive and all-wheel drive - The Mustang Mach-E also received updates to reduce the charging time between 80-90 per cent capacity from 52 minutes to 15 minutes, a recalibration of the one-pedal driving feature for even smoother performance at lower speeds and enhancements to driver comfort. - Now on sale in Europe for over one year, the Mustang Mach-E continues to win fans. Around 88 per cent of customers to-date have moved from other car brands to Ford to experience the fun-to-drive characteristics, bold styling and driving range of the vehicle. Existing owners can also benefit from many of the recent upgrades through software or homologation updates, with future over-the-air updates planned to keep the Mustang Mach-E continuously improving. As far as the numbers go, there's an increase – though it's important to note that the company has also given the fastback EV substantial updates, including an increase in vehicle range. - The 2023 Polestar 2 Single Motor now starts at $48,400 – a $1,200 increase from before. The Dual Motor variant now starts at $51,900. Both prices are before the applicable $1,400 destination charge and Federal Tax Credit valued at $7,500. - Polestar 2 Dual Motor gets a bump, with a preliminary estimated 260-mile US EPA range. This increase is thanks to software improvements, implementing an 11-mile increase from the 2022 model year. The 2023 Polestar 2 Single Motor model is still rated at 270 miles by EPA. - The US-spec Polestar 2 will have an upgraded heat pump designed for better cold-weather performance, new design options across the interior and exterior of the car, and a more advanced air quality sensor. - There's a new performance software upgrade for the Performance Pack for the 2023 model year. The upgrade adds 68 horsepower and 15 lb-ft of torque to the car. The Performance Pack is only available for the dual-motor variant, but will also be available to purchase as a separate software upgrade for both existing and future dual-motor cars, with and without the Performance Pack. This is a rare opportunity for us to get a glimpse into the brain of one of the key executives behind the Qualcomm Technology Licensing business.   Our guest today, is John Han, Senior Vice President & General Manager of Qualcomm Technology Licensing (QTL), a division of Qualcomm Incorporated.   Here are the questions we covered during our conversation:   John, could you please introduce yourself and your role within Qualcomm to our audience? Your bio says you work for “QTL” and in IP. I thought Qualcomm made wireless chips? Who are your customers? How does it work?   Oh, so you’re one of those companies that buys patents and sues people when they use them?   Qualcomm doesn’t have the most patents. How can it say it has the most valuable portfolio of patents?   There are sone key terms that are important in the licensing game. FRAND is one of them. I always am thinking, “can’t we just be FRANDS?”   is the wild west, but there are also the terms “hold up” and “hold out”. What on earth are these and why should we care?   your recent earnings call, it sounded like you had signed up every single smart phone maker with 5G licenses. Is this a sweep?   had previously been under intense scrutiny for how you treated your customers and IP. But none of these jurisdictions asked you to change anything about your program, how it’s structured. So what’s the secret to the success?   We’re hearing about 5G in cars, in buildings, in PCs. Are we done with 5G?   Disclaimer: This show is for information and entertainment purposes only. While we will discuss publicly traded companies on this show. In this latest  ARC Smart City Podcast, Larry O'Brien of the ARC smart cities team interviews Sanjeet Pandit, global head of smart cities and smart connected spaces at Qualcomm Technologies.  Our conversation covers a broad swath of smart city technologies and applications, from smart city platforms to 5G and IoT.  We talk about Qualcomm's capabilities and the technologies they offer, but most importantly we go over several use cases for smart city technologies, from addressing COVID-19 challenges to creating digital twins to the successful implementation of projects.  We also go into the topic of how many cities are reorganizing to break down the siloes of functionality that exist between various departments in cities and critical infrastructure.  It's a wide-ranging discussion with an industry veteran with a lot of insight, which is something we always try to bring you at the ARC Smart Cities Podcast.  Here are a few words from Sanjeet on the General Spread of Advanced Technologies in the smart city space:"I think this has been a time where technology adoption has taken off in multiple use cases, it's not just about smart cities, but mostly it is more of a use case solving a rendered outcome-based deployments. We are seeing a resurgence in our cities trying to get more and more sustainable. Cities are adopting technologies that are much open approach, they want to make sure they're prepared for,( God forbid) the next pandemic. There has been a digital divide that has been very, very apparent during this difficult period that we all went through.  Technology is now moving into spaces where people did not even imagine it would be there. On 5G and AI:"With the combination of 5G and AI, it's going to change the way we're looking at smart cities in general. In 5G, we're already seeing a lot of growth in privately deployed 5G networks, especially what you said about CCTV and video analytics, right. So, I think we have this kind of convergence of pretty powerful edge processing right now. Microsoft is using Azure Sphere, the chip-to-cloud security technologies that protect their Xbox consoles to create a new vision for Windows security. Microsoft in collaboration with their biggest Silicon partners AMD, Intel and Qualcomm Technologies is introducing the Microsoft Pluton security processor. This will bring even more security advancements to future Windows PCs and signals the beginning of a journey with ecosystem and OEM partners. Microsoft’s vision for the future of Windows PCs is security at the very core, built into the CPU, for a more integrated approach where the hardware and software are tightly integrated, ultimately removing entire vectors of attack. This revolutionary security processor design will make it significantly more difficult for attackers to hide beneath the operating system, and improve being able to guard against physical attacks, prevent the theft of credential and encryption keys, and provide the ability to recover from software bugs. The heart of the operating system security on most PCs lives in a chip separate from the CPU and is called the Trusted Platform Module (TPM). The TPM is a hardware component which is used to help securely store keys and measurements that verify the integrity of the system. TPMs have been supported in Windows for more than 10 years and power many critical technologies such as Windows Hello and BitLocker. Given the effectiveness of the TPM at performing critical security tasks, attackers have begun to innovate ways to attack it, particularly in situations where an attacker can steal or temporarily gain physical access to a PC. These sophisticated attack techniques target the communication channel between the CPU and TPM, which is typically a bus interface. This bus interface provides the ability to share information between the main CPU and security processor, but it also provides an opportunity for attackers to steal or modify information in-transit using a physical attack. The Pluton design removes the potential for that communication channel to be attacked by building security directly into the CPU. Windows PCs using the Pluton architecture will first emulate a TPM that works with the existing TPM specifications and APIs which will allow customers to immediately benefit from enhanced security for Windows features that rely on TPMs like BitLocker and System Guard. Windows devices with Pluton will use the Pluton security processor to protect credentials, user identities, encryption keys, and personal data. None of this information can be removed from Pluton even if an attacker has installed malware or has complete physical possession of the PC. This is accomplished by storing sensitive data like encryption keys securely within the Pluton processor which is isolated from the rest of the system, helping to ensure that emerging attack techniques, like speculative execution, cannot access key material. Pluton also provides the unique Secure Hardware Cryptography Key (SHACK) technology that helps ensure keys are never exposed outside of the protected hardware, even to the Pluton firmware itself, providing an unprecedented level of security for Windows customers. According to AMD, security is their top priority, and they are proud to work with Microsoft on this. “AMD and Microsoft have been closely partnering to develop and continuously improve processor-based security solutions, beginning with the Xbox One console and now in the PC. We design and build our products with security in mind and bringing Microsoft’s Pluton technology to the chip level will enhance the already strong security capabilities of our processors.” Says Jason Thomas, head of product security, AMD. Intel is continuing to partner with Microsoft as they advance the security of Windows PC platforms. “The introduction of Microsoft Pluton into future Intel CPUs will further enable integration between Intel hardware and the Windows operating system.” According to Mike Nordquist, Sr. Di...

A new wireless communication technology for cars was revealed in the recently held Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2019. The technology, called cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X), allows cars to communicate with infrastructure, pedestrians, and other cars. It was developed by Qualcomm Technologies in hopes of improving traffic situations and ensuring road safety. Using high-speed Internet, C-V2X enables vehicles to receive information from roads under construction to avoid traffic buildup. C-V2X may also be used to prevent road accidents in two ways. First, the technology lets cars send traffic information to oncoming vehicles. Second, pedestrians can use C-V2X through their mobile phones to communicate their location to cars. To demonstrate how the technology works, manufacturers Audi, Ford, and Ducati each presented a vehicle equipped with C-V2X. The cars were then driven to a four-way intersection that did not have a traffic light. With C-V2X, the cars were able to successfully negotiate which vehicle should go first, thus avoiding a collision. The three huge vehicle manufacturers see the potential of this wireless communication technology. In fact, Audi, Ford, and Ducati vowed to work closer with Qualcomm Technologies to ensure C-V2X's future commercial success. Ford's executive director also appealed to other technology developers, car manufacturers, and governments to take part in equipping cars and roads with C-V2X. While the technology's advantages are highlighted in the CES, some critics are quick to point out its flaws. For one, installing C-V2X on roads will be very costly, especially for poor cities. One critic also noted that it is wrong to require pedestrians to use the technology because it is the drivers' responsibility to avoid accidents.

News The Flyox Amphib UAV enters market Singular Aircraft has released the Flyox I, an amphibian RPA (Remotely Piloted Aircraft) that can take off and land on water, as well as on unpaved runways and snow. Flyox I is a high wing aircraft with a 14 meter wingspan, a 2000 kg payload, and is powered by two 340 HP engines. It can automatically take-off and land, and can be programed with preset flight paths. Envisioned applications include agriculture, firefighting, goods transport, surveillance, and rescue. India bans civilian drones in the country till it revises existing policies The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has prohibited the use of civilian drones in India. The DGCA says, “Due to lack of regulation, operating procedures/standards, and uncertainty of the technology, UAS poses threat for air collisions and accidents.” Serbia and Albania game abandoned after drone invasion sparks brawl Serbia's European Championship football (soccer) qualifying match with Albania was stopped after a fight between the players broke out. When a DJI Phantom flew over the field carrying a "Greater Albania" flag, a Serbian player pulled it down, and that sparked the brawl. Industry Coalition Wants Open Source Code for Drones The Dronecode Project has been established as a Linux Foundation Collaborative Project to foster a common, shared open source platform for UAVs. The Project includes the APM/ArduPilot UAV software platform and associated code, currently hosted by 3D Robotics. Founding members include 3D Robotics, Baidu, Box, DroneDeploy, Intel, jDrones, Laser Navigation, Qualcomm Technologies, SkyWard, Squadrone System, Walkera and Yuneec. More than 1,200 developers are working on Dronecode. Press Release: Linux Foundation and Leading Technology Companies Launch Open Source Dronecode Project Drone approved to map area terrain Wright State Research Institute (WSRI) will partner with 3D Aerial Solutions to fly an eBee drone to map terrain at the Wilmington Air Park. The photogrammetry flights will produce a series of two-dimensional photographs that together create a 3D image. The Ohio/Indiana UAS Test Site will then use the data to virtually fly UAVs. The eBee is a hand-launched flying wing type aircraft with a single pusher engine. It has a 38” wingspan, a 50 minute flight time, and a radio range of just under 2 miles. Wright State also has asked the FAA for permission to fly a UAV above the National Center for Medical Readiness. A decision is pending. DARPA advances ship-based MALE UAV concept DARPA (the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) has awarded AeroVironment a $19 million preliminary design contract to demonstrate launch and recovery of a medium-sized UAV from a small vessel. According to DARPA, the tactically exploited reconnaissance node (TERN, now retitled Tern) program, “envisions using smaller ships as mobile launch and recovery sites for medium-altitude long-endurance [MALE] unmanned aircraft. Ideally, Tern would enable on-demand, ship-based unmanned aircraft system operations without extensive, time-consuming and irreversible ship modifications.” “Subscale flight demonstrations” are expected over the next 12 months. 2014 UAV Market Research Study assesses size, growth of total UAV market The "2014 UAV Market Research Study" from IGI Consulting estimates that the US market will grow from $5 billion in 2013 to $15 billion in 2020.
