Daisy and Clare from W - Rated podcast return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Daisy's choice Memento. Memento is the 2000 mind bending neo-noir thriller breakthrough film from visionary director Christopher Nolan. It stars Guy Pearce as Leonard Shelby, a man who is unable to store recent memories, he covers himself in tattoos to “remember” facts. He is trying to track down the man who raped and killed his wife with the help of undercover cop Teddy Gammell (Joe Pantoliano). He also becomes involved with Natalie (Carrie-Anne Moss) who may or may not be helping him to track down the killer. Memento combines a non-linear narrative structure with an unreliable narrator to create a mind bending 113 minutes of film. As the film unravels backwards the viewer is left wondering who are the good guys and who are the bad guys and what is fact and what is fiction. Everyone apart from Clare, who is a self proclaimed non-Nolan fan, loved Memento on release and it is still as mind blowing as it was when it confused the hell out of us in 2000. Aaron and Josh Sarnecky are here for the movie portion of their March retrospectives. This month the brothers are looking at Memento, celebrating the 20th anniversary of its US release. Memento made its debut at the Venice Film Festival in 2000. It first hit US theaters on March 16, 2001. It was written and directed by Christopher Nolan, based on a short story by his brother Jonathan. Memento stars Guy Pearce (L.A. Confidential) as Leonard Shelby, a former insurance investigator seeking revenge on the man that killed his wife during a home invasion. Complicating matters is Leonard's inability to make new memories, the result of blunt force trauma he suffered during the break-in. Seemingly aiding Shelby in his quest for vengeance are his “friends” Teddy and Natalie, played by Joe Pantoliano (The Sopranos) and Carrie-Anne Moss (Jessica Jones). Memento garnered critical acclaim, including a standing ovation at Venice and two Oscar nominations for Best Original Screenplay and Best Editing. It made approximately $40 million at the box office, respectable for a film that cost less than $10 million. Memento is presented as two different sequences of scenes: a series in black-and-white that is shown chronologically, and a series of color sequences shown in reverse order. The two sequences "meet" at the end of the film, producing one common story. It stars Guy Pearce as Leonard Shelby, a man with anterograde amnesia, which impairs his ability to store new explicit memories, who has developed a system for recollection using hand-written notes, tattoos, and Polaroid photos. During the opening credits, which portray the end of the story, it is shown that Leonard kills Teddy (Joe Pantoliano). The mind is a dangerous place, and memories can lead you down the wrong path. This week, Zach gets educated on a different type of storytelling with Christopher Nolan's Memento. Memento is presented as two different sequences of scenes: a series in black-and-white that is shown chronologically, and a series of color sequences shown in reverse order. The two sequences "meet" at the end of the film, producing one common story. It stars Guy Pearce as Leonard Shelby, a man with anterograde amnesia, which impairs his ability to store new explicit memories, who has developed a system for recollection using hand-written notes, tattoos, and Polaroid photos. During the opening credits, which portray the end of the story, it is shown that Leonard kills Teddy (Joe Pantoliano). The film suggests that this killing is vengeance for the rape and murder of his wife (Jorja Fox) based on information provided by Natalie (Carrie-Anne Moss). This episode features samples taken from the movie 'Momento', in it Guy Pearce stars as Leonard Shelby a man who due to a confrontation with an intruder in which he received a blow to the head, can now only remember for 15 minutes as he is unable to 'make new memories' as he describes it. This raises an interesting question, when you think about it, your memories are only as real as your dreams at night or fantasies about your future. If you were to lose your ability to make new memories, your only reality would be what is happening to you right now. The past would be as none existant as any other thought in your mind. It's only your memory that keeps the past alive but as is mentioned in Momento, memories can be distorted! It's all about chaos and costumes in Halloween, the sixth episodes from the second season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Willow becomes a hot ghost, Xander becomes a soldier, Buffy becomes a noblewoman and Cordelia is still Cordelia, but with cute, plastic cat ears. Ethan Rayne makes his first appearance and we see that Giles has a bit of a dark side. In this commentary, I talk about volunteer work, trick or treat and the inconsistency of the vampire invitation rule. As usual, be sure to listen for my preemptive countdown before beginning Halloween on your DVD. For the record, the last time I dressed up for Halloween, I was Leonard Shelby from the film, Memento. So, had I been in Sunnydale at the time, I would have been struck with short-term memory loss and a taste for murderous revenge. As Buffy would say, "It's good to be me." :)
