We sit down with Viridiana Lieberman, an award-winning editor and director behind some of the most acclaimed nonfiction films and series of the past decade. Her work includes The Sentence, Call Center Blues, and most recently The Perfect Neighbor—Oscar nominee for Best Documentary Feature Film, as well as winner of the US Documentary Directing Award at Sundance 2025 and the Critics Choice Documentary Award for Best Editing. With a style marked by precision, restraint, and emotional clarity, Lieberman's projects consistently push the boundaries of what a documentary can be.In this conversation, Viridiana shares how she approaches the craft of editing not just as a technician, but as a storyteller and partner in the filmmaking process. She reflects on her years-long creative collaboration with director Geeta Gandbhir, the unique editorial challenges behind The Perfect Neighbor, and why she believes documentaries can feel as cinematic as narrative film. We also talk about the editorial mindset she brings to directing her own work, including her debut feature Born to Play, and how that perspective shapes how she receives footage from other teams.Throughout the episode, Lieberman opens up about how nonfiction editors help define structure, tone, and trust—on both sides of the screen. For anyone working in documentary or nonfiction production, this is a conversation rich with insight on the power of restraint, the value of long-term collaboration, and what it takes to build stories that last.ABOUT WRAPBOOKWrapbook is the AI platform for production finance.Built for today's fast-moving production landscape, Wrapbook brings payroll, spend, and accounting into one AI-powered system—giving production teams the tools they need to do more, faster.Built for features, TV, or commercials—Wrapbook helps the industry's biggest production companies stay compliant, track every dollar in real time, and eliminate the paper-chasing that slows everything down. Editor - Michael P. Shawver Sinners editor Michael Shawver has enjoyed a long and productive relationship with his former USC classmate, director Ryan Coogler.  Together the two have collaborated on Fruitvale Station, Creed, Black Panther, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and now Sinners.  Their past experience on both VFX-heavy films like Black Panther, as well as socio-political dramas like Fruitvale Station, would prove invaluable as they worked to blend the real horror of racial injustice with the fantastical horror of a vampire onslaught. Taking place in 1932, Sinners follows identical twins, and World War I veterans, Elijah "Smoke" and Elias "Stack" Moore as they return to Clarksdale, Mississippi after spending seven years in Chicago. Using money stolen from criminal syndicates, they purchase a sawmill from a landowner to start a juke joint for the local Black community. Their younger cousin Sammie, a singer and guitarist, joins them despite his pastor father's warnings about the sins of blues music.  His warnings would prove prophetic, as the twins and their friends face foes both familiar and supernatural. MICHAEL P. SHAWVER Originally from Rhode Island, Sinners editor Michael Shawver developed an early working relationship with director Ryan Coogler during their time together at the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts. Shawver initially edited Coogler's short film, Fig, and later went on to cut his feature debut, Fruitvale Station, starring Michael B. Jordan. The film garnered two of the Sundance Film Festival's top prizes, the Audience Award and the Grand Jury Prize, and went on to receive numerous awards and nominations at film festivals worldwide. Shawver also edited All Summers End, a debut feature film by director Kyle Wilamowski; Warren, by director Alex Beh; Tell, for director J.M.R. Luna; and Fourth Man Out, for Andrew Nackman. Shawver's next collaboration with Coogler and Jordan was Creed, for which he received a nomination for Best Editing in the Independent Critics Poll. Michael then reunited with Coogler and Jordan on Black Panther, a box office smash, which was nominated an outstanding 43 times, including for Best Picture at the Academy Awards and Best Motion Picture Drama at the Golden Globes. His work on this project also earned him a Saturn Award Nomination for Best Editing and an Alliance of Women Film Journalists Nomination for the Best Editing EDA Award. In addition, the film won Movie of the Year at the AFI Awards. Following Black Panther, Shawver edited A Quiet Place: Part II, directed by John Krasinski. He later returned to the Marvel universe for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, again collaborating with Coogler and Jordan. Shawver's recent work includes Abigail, a genre-bending thriller directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. He is currently editing The Thomas Crown Affair directed by and starring Michael B. Jordan. Send us a text message and tell us your thoughts. What drives someone to pick up a camera and document untold Caribbean history with no formal training? For Richard Vaughn, it was a simple realization: the political stories that shaped the modern Caribbean were either missing from film archives or told through a heavily biased lens. Vaughn takes us on his remarkable journey from curious Jamaican-American to award-winning documentary filmmaker. With us, he describes what would become "The Love Trilogy" – three powerful documentaries examining pivotal Caribbean political figures: Michael Manley of Jamaica, the Grenada Revolution, and Cheddi Jagan of Guyana. The trilogy's name emerged organically from Manley's own words about his political movement: "The word is love."The conversation weaves together reflections on Caribbean self-determination, the connection between political movements and cultural expressions like reggae music, and practical advice for aspiring documentarians. Vaughn's simple guidance resonates beyond filmmaking: identify what needs preserving in your community's history, start with whatever resources you have, and persist despite obstacles. Listen now to discover how documentary film serves as both historical preservation and a tool for balanced understanding of the Caribbean's complex political landscape. What stories in your community deserve similar documentation?Richard Vaughan born in New York to Jamaican immigrants in 1980. Driven by a passion for his culture and determination to educate and tell stores that history often forgets. Winner of the Madrid International Filmmaker Festival 2017 for Best Editing of a Documentary and the 2017 Van Gogh Award: Prodigy Auteur at the 2017 Amsterdam Film Festival for his second documentary Rolling Along: An Inline Movement. Welcome back to Born to Watch, the movie podcast where we dive deep into the films that define genres, push boundaries, and leave audiences speechless. This week, we're tackling one of the greatest action films of the modern era with our Mad Max Fury Road (2015) Movie Review. When George Miller resurrected the Mad Max franchise in 2015, nobody expected just how monumental Fury Road would become. A two-hour adrenaline rush packed with death-defying stunts, high-speed chases, and jaw-dropping practical effects, this film redefined what action movies could be. From the stunning cinematography to the minimal but powerful storytelling, Fury Road remains a cinematic triumph. But where does it rank in the Mad Max series? And is it truly a Mad Max movie, or does Furiosa steal the show? The BTW team breaks it all down.Mad Max Returns—But Is He the Star?Tom Hardy takes over the iconic role of Max Rockatansky, a road-weary survivor haunted by his past. But does Max get lost in the dust in a film filled with larger-than-life warlords, kamikaze war boys, and a heavy-metal guitarist strapped to a flame-throwing rig?Charlize Theron's Imperator Furiosa might be the real heart of Fury Road. Her mission to rescue the wives of the tyrannical Immortan Joe drives the story forward, and her character's emotional depth makes her one of the most compelling action heroines of all time. We discuss whether Fury Road is more of a Furiosa film than a Max one—and how this dynamic affects the franchise as a whole.Behind-the-Scenes Mayhem: A Production NightmareThe journey to bring Mad Max Fury Road to life was almost as chaotic as the movie. Originally planned to film in the Australian Outback, unexpected rainstorms turned the barren wasteland into a flower-filled paradise, forcing the production to move to Namibia. Months of gruelling desert shoots, on-set conflicts, and the sheer ambition of the stunts made this one of the most difficult productions in recent memory.George Miller, the mastermind behind the franchise, pushed for practical effects wherever possible. Almost everything you see on screen—the insane car chases, the gravity-defying stunts, and the war rigs tearing across the desert—was done for real. The result? It is a visceral, pulse-pounding experience unlike anything else. The Legacy of Fury RoadWhen Fury Road hit theatres, it was more than just a blockbuster—it was a game-changer. The film scored 10 Oscar nominations, winning six, including Best Editing for George Miller's wife, Margaret Sixel. But beyond the awards, Fury Road proved that practical effects, real stunts, and original storytelling could still dominate in an era of CGI-heavy action films. But how does it hold up nearly a decade later? Does Fury Road deserve a spot among the greatest action movies ever? And where does it sit in the Mad Max franchise compared to The Road Warrior and Beyond Thunderdome? The BTW Verdict: An Action MasterpieceWith non-stop action, unforgettable characters, and some of the most visually stunning cinematography in movie history, Mad Max Fury Road is a must-watch for any action fan. Whether you're revisiting it for the tenth time or experiencing it for the first, there's no denying that this film is a relentless, high-octane thrill ride from start to finish.Tune in to this week's episode as we break down every explosive moment, debate the film's legacy, and determine if Fury Road is the best Mad Max film yet. Don't forget to leave a review, share the episode with fellow movie lovers, and share your thoughts on the film!

Alfacast

Many now agree that the NASA acronym (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) should instead connote Never A Straight Answer.  The historic "Moon Landing" has become a central issue amongst the growing number of NASA skeptics for good reason.  Modernized technology reveal so many incongruities in existing video footage & documentation that the government may, indeed. have "a lot of splainin to do".   Bart Sibrel, award winning filmmaker, writer, and investigative journalist, joins this special Thursday 5 PM Alfacast to set the record straight!  Bart has been producing television programs, documentaries, music videos, TV commercials, and stage plays for over forty years. Sibrel has owned five video production companies, been employed by two of the three major networks, worked as a television news reporter, and produced videos shown on ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, TLC, USA, and BET. He has also appeared as a seasoned actor on the stage and screen over five hundred times. Articles featuring Sibrel's films have been published in Time Magazine, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and USA Today. His awards from the American Motion Picture Society include Best Cinematography, Best Editing, and Top Ten Director. Sibrel grew up as the biggest fan of the purported "moon landings", yet gradually began to recognize their unfortunate falsification, largely because of his professional familiarity with their studio lighting. In Sibrel's mind, as well as many others, the claim that NASA walked on the moon on the very first attempt with 1960's technology, which only had one-millionth the computing power of a cell phone, when today with five decades of better technology NASA can only send astronauts one-thousandth the distance to the moon, simply defies logic. Sibrel believes that a religious attachment to the emotional event is what prevents people from waking up to the deplorable reality. Bart has appeared as guest commentator about the moon landing fraud on The Joe Rogan Experience, Geraldo, the Abrams Report, NBC, CNN, FOX, HBO, Tech TV, Coast to Coast, Candace Owens, Patrick Bet-David, and InfoWars. In his memoir Moon Man Bart Sibrel reveals, for the very first time, the official CIA code name for the real Apollo project, the military base where the first staged "moon landing" was filmed, and the names of fifteen United States government scientists and officials who were in attendance for the first moon landing falsification, some of whom are still alive today. This information was given to Sibrel by the Chief of Security of this secretive military base, who confessed his regrettable participation in this despicable government fraud on his deathbed. Moon Man also reveals Bart Sibrel's real-life espionage adventures investigating the CIA's greatest secret, including his discovery of privately recorded audio of an astronaut plotting Sibrel's assassination by the CIA, which would not be necessary if they really went to the moon.  Bart Sibrel is convinced that until the moon landing fraud is exposed, all the governments of the world will continue to rob the people under their care of not only the truth, yet also of their hard earned money, which continues to this day to finance their own deception. Feature: 1972 Munich Hostage Crisis broadcast gets revisited in ‘September 5,’ we discuss the film with its director. Movies centered on journalists have been somewhat of a trend over the years, with Spotlight and The Post serving as recent examples, and some older classics like All The President’s Men and The Insider. Writer-director Tim Fehlbaum’s latest project, September 5, looks to add to the tradition with a timely story of broadcast journalists attempting to cover an international incident in real-time. The film follows the 1972 Munich Olympics, with its inciting incident being 11 Israeli hostages held by Palestinian militants. It was coverage that was watched by roughly 900 million viewers, showing just how serious this event was. Hansjörg Weißbrich, the film’s editor, creates tension despite most of the film being set in one building; his work on the film has since been acknowledged by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, which awarded September 5 for its Best Editing category. For this week’s feature, we talk to filmmaker Tim Fehlbaum about the making of September 5 and the work it took to revisit a dark moment in history.

Today on Art of the Cut we speak with Oscar nominee, Juliette Welfling about Jacques Audiard's film, Emilia Perez, currently on Netflix. Juliette's been on Art of the Cut before another of Audiard's films, The Sisters Brothers. Her other films include The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, for which she was nominated for an Oscar for Best Editing. She also edited the films: Rust and Bone, A Prophet, The Past, Free State of Jones and Ocean's Eight, The discussion today is about - among other things - structuring a film for character, not allowing an editor's cut to go too long, and working with a naked director - metaphorically. I do not ever recall anyone entering three motion pictures and winning a Top Award on All Three! But you have!”( Also Youngest Winner - Age 26 )Jack Ruddell AMPS Director - October 6, 1991Sibrel grew up as the biggest fan of the purported "moon landings", yet gradually began to recognize their unfortunate falsification, largely because of his professional familiarity with their studio lighting. Sibrel believes that a religious attachment to the emotional event is what prevents people from waking up to the deplorable reality.Bart Sibrel has appeared as guest commentator about the moon landing fraud on The Joe Rogan Experience, The Daily Show, Geraldo, the Abrams Report, NBC, CNN, FOX, HBO, Tech TV, Coast to Coast, and InfoWars. This information was given to Sibrel by the Chief of Security of this secretive military base, who confessed his regrettable participation in this despicable government fraud on his deathbed.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/gary-s-night-dreams-talk-radio--2788432/support.
