This episode of the DNS Podcast features healthcare consumer and patient advocate Natalie Hayden. Formerly a news anchor and reporter, Natalie (Sparacio) Hayden was first diagnosed with Crohn's disease in July 2005, two months after graduating with a journalism degree from Marquette University. She didn't allow her disease to rob her of all she had worked towards, so she began her career three months after diagnosis, and ventured 8 hours away from all family and friends to work at an ABC affiliate in Minnesota, while on 22 pills a day. When Natalie left the news desk in 2014 after working at television stations in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois, she decided it was time to share her patient journey publicly in order to be the voice she desperately needed to hear upon diagnosis, through her career, finding love, and starting a family. Through her award-winning blog, Lights, Camera, Crohn's, she shares stories and experiences about everything from overcoming struggles to celebrating small victories. Since the blog's launch in July 2016, she's shared nearly 400 articles on her site alone. As an IBD mom of three, she's passionate about helping women with IBD navigate everything from the family planning process, to pregnancy, and motherhood. This episode is hosted by Christina Rollins, MBA, MS, RDN, LDN, FAND, CNSC and was recorded on 5/13/2023.

This week we caught up with our friend Lauren Erbach Barnfield! We've both known Lauren for several years but have never heard her full IBD story so it was really great to hear it all. We talked about her participation in the PIANO study which is a study about women living with IBD and taking biologics while pregnant and what all that entailed. We talked to her about finding the right treatment for her Crohn's and who choosing a biologic is intimidating especially when you can find so many negative stories on the internet. We also discussed talking to her small children about IBD, her going graduate school while living with Crohn's, having a full-time job AND a family, and about blogging about her Crohn's when she was younger. We also spent quite a bit of time talking about the importance of sharing your IBD story- even the mundane and seemingly normal parts- to help other people better understand what it's like to live with a chronic illness. And we talked a lot about the health insurance system in the US and how challenging it is to people with chronic illnesses. "This illness is just a small part of me. It’s not all of me. I’m still able to be a mom. And I haven’t allowed my disease to rob me of that. It just gives me strength. It almost makes me feel like a badass some days! It’s not always pretty, but for the most part, I’m doing what I want to do with my life despite my illness." Natalie Hayden was diagnosed with Crohn's disease right after graduating college. She was on track to pursue her dream job as a television anchor, but her inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) diagnosis tried to derail that. After several hospitalizations and a series of bowel obstructions, Natalie underwent major surgery to remove 18 inches from her intestines. But despite the disease's valiant efforts to keep Natalie down, she has persevered. She went on to become a TV news anchor, just as she'd always dreamed, and she's a mother to two healthy children. Today, Natalie is a freelance, work-from-home mom who chronicles her life with Crohn's disease at Lights, Camera, Crohn's: An Unobstructed View. This is an honest conversation about what it looks like when you have a chronic illness and want to become a mom, and what concerns arose for both Natalie and me in our respective journeys. FROM THE BIG FINISH NEWSD PAGE PAUL SPRAGG 9 May 2014 Categories: , , It is with the deepest regret that we have to inform you of the death of our dear friend and highly valued colleague, Paul Spragg. All of us here at Big Finish feel utterly devastated by the news. Paul had worked with us for over five years and had become an essential member of the team. We will remember him for his tireless diligence, his total dedication to his job, his cheery nature, his hilarious sense of humour and his kindness and friendship. Our listeners will perhaps know him best for his BF forum contributions, all the help he gave customers via the enquires@bigfinish address and his many, many podcast appearances. He had relatively recently become editor of Vortex magazine (a promotion he was given 'live' on a podcast). His work behind the scenes on contracts, script distribution, proof-reading, cover layout, studio management, CD Extra interviews, the website and so much more made him vital to the company's operations. Paul's partner, Natalie Hayden, issued a statement on Facebook today. 'To all of you that I didn't manage to text yesterday (I couldn't get round to everyone): there is sad news that Paul died yesterday suddenly. He'd been unwell for a few weeks, and was due to go to the GPs yesterday. But he was too breathless to be able to make it in to the surgery, so they phoned him instead. They arranged for a non-emergency ambulance to come and take him to hospital so he could be monitored. When they arrived, he was talking to them normally, and then had a seizure. He came out of that one, then had another seizure, during which his heart stopped and he stopped breathing. The ambulance crew tried to resuscitate him for two hours at home, and then took him to hospital where they tried for a further half an hour, but couldn't bring him round.' Our thoughts are with Natalie, who made Paul so happy, and all his family and close friends. We intend to celebrate and honour Paul's memory. For now, we are in the most terrible shock.
