Identifying Patterns of Abuse: A Situational Awareness Approach

What warning signs did we all miss? In the wake of Gabby Petito's tragic murder by her fiancé Brian Laundrie, situational awareness expert Kelly Sayre joins host Maria MacMullin to fulfill Joe Petito's call to action—using his daughter's story as a learning tool to help others recognize the dangerous patterns of abuse before they turn deadly.Kelly breaks down abusive behaviors through the lens of situational awareness, defining it as "using all your senses and intuition to notice when something is off in your environment, understanding what it means to your safety, and taking action." This framework provides listeners with practical tools to identify potentially dangerous relationships, whether in their own lives or those of loved ones. The conversation examines specific red flags from Gabby's relationship: her tendency to take all blame during the Moab police encounter, Brian's tactics to isolate her from friends and family, his financial abuse that undermined her independence, and the controlling behaviors disguised as concern. Most importantly, Kelly emphasizes that severe domestic violence rarely begins with physical attacks—it starts with psychological manipulation that gradually escalates.Perhaps most powerful is the discussion about intuition as a biological safety mechanism. "Intuition is not a prankster," Kelly explains. "It's simply trying to let you know something in your environment is off." Both experts encourage listeners to trust that gut feeling when something doesn't seem right in a relationship, as this instinct exists to preserve our safety.Whether you're concerned about your own relationship or trying to support someone you love, this episode offers crucial insights into recognizing abuse patterns early. Trust your intuition, maintain your boundaries, and remember that knowledge is power when it comes to personal safety. Share this episode with someone who needs to hear it—it could save a life.

The Joint Readiness Training Center is pleased to present the ninety-eighth episode to air on ‘The Crucible - The JRTC Experience. Hosted by the Task Force Senior for the TF-1 (IN BN), LTC Charles “Chuck” Wall on behalf of the Commander of Ops Group (COG). Today's guest is the First Sergeant for Headquarters and Headquarters Company of Operations Group, 1SG Will Pogue. 1SG Pogue was previously a Company Team First Sergeant Observer-Coach-Trainer at the JRTC.   In this episode, we focus on warfighting fundamentals at the team through platoon level during large-scale combat operations (LSCO), emphasizing the gap between familiarity and true proficiency. A central issue discussed is how units often rush through collective training gates without ensuring mastery of basic tasks. This “check-the-box” mentality results in units arriving at the JRTC underprepared, especially when it comes to troop leading procedures (TLPs), indirect fire integration, support-by-fire shifts and lifts, and graphic control measures. The lack of unit-wide standard operating procedures (SOPs) and insufficient repetitions in home-station training were identified as key friction points. Best practices emphasized include deliberate, planned retraining windows; leader certification on SOPs; and daily reinforcement of team through company-level standards—especially through structured sergeant's time training.   Another focal point is the inconsistency within and across units when it comes to weapons squad performance, patrol base occupation, and movement to contact. The discussion notes that some platoons within a company display exceptional coordination and fire discipline, while others show significant knowledge gaps. The causes include high leader turnover, lack of doctrinal grounding, and insufficient focus on junior NCO development. Recommendations include certifying leaders before executing training, embedding retraining as a standard step in the 8-step training model, and reinforcing collective standards through battalion-wide forums or training events. The episode closes with a reminder that excellence in LSCO starts with discipline in the fundamentals—fieldcraft, communication, tactical planning, and leadership—and that repeated, standards-based training at home-station is the only path to achieving real warfighting proficiency.   Part of S03 “Lightfighter Lessons” series.   For additional information and insights from this episode, please check-out our Instagram page @the_jrtc_crucible_podcast   Be sure to follow us on social media to keep up with the latest warfighting TTPs learned through the crucible that is the Joint Readiness Training Center.   Follow us by going to: https://linktr.ee/jrtc and then selecting your preferred podcast format.   Again, we'd like to thank our guests for participating. What does safety really mean when you're trapped in an abusive relationship? For forty years, Genesis Women's Shelter & Support has been answering this question through action, evolving from a seven-room emergency shelter into a comprehensive support system that recognizes both physical and emotional dimensions of safety. In this revealing conversation, Genesis CEO Jan Langbein and Chief Residential Officer Jordyn Lawson take us through the history of domestic violence services in America—a journey that began long before shelter doors opened, tracing back to women's suffrage and the fight against laws that once permitted husbands to beat their wives legally. They share how Genesis has continuously adapted to meet survivor needs, from adding transitional housing to legal services to innovative occupational therapy for traumatized children. The most dangerous misconception about domestic violence? That victims are safe once they leave. In reality, 75% of women murdered by partners are killed after separation. This stark reality explains why "just leaving" isn't simple, especially when abusers use isolation, financial control, and threats as weapons. Lawson expertly dismantles our understanding of abuse, explaining how controlling behaviors combined with any physical aggression represent the highest risk for homicide, while strangulation increases murder risk elevenfold.Perhaps most importantly, Langbein and Lawson offer practical guidance for everyone who suspects someone might be suffering. "Trust your gut," they urge, explaining that even when victims deny abuse initially, simply knowing someone cares enough to ask can become a lifeline. Whether you're concerned about someone you know or working in a position to help survivors, this episode provides the knowledge to recognize warning signs that media sensationalism often obscures.Ready to be part of the solution? Genesis offers 24/7 support at 214-946-HELP. Because as this episode reminds us: abuse won't stop until abusers stop abusing—but we can all help create pathways to safety.

Oren Gilad, President and CEO of Aprea Therapeutics, focused on the DNA damage response pathway, specifically targeting the ATR protein. ATR is a master regulator of DNA replication and is hyperactive in cancer cells, making it a potential Achilles heel for cancer therapy. By inhibiting ATR, cancer cells can be selectively targeted, while normal cells can tolerate lower levels of ATR activity. Synthetic lethality is applied when two genetic mutations are combined, leading to cell death, specifically in cancer cells. Aprea is conducting clinical trials for their targeted treatments, focusing on solid tumors with defined genetic mutations. Oren explains, "DDR, the DNA damage response pathway, is the broader terminology for the regulation of DNA synthesis. In order for cancer to grow, cells have to duplicate. In order for them to duplicate, they have to replicate their DNA. So what happens is that cancer cells get into this DNA replication phase very early and prematurely, causing a single-strand DNA to be exposed which then activates the ATR pathway, where in normal cells, this pathway is very tightly regulated. The normal cell is not going to enter this phase and start DNA replication before the environment is ready because it's a very fragile phase of the cell cycle." "Double-strand DNA is a very stable molecule. It is found in mummies, it survives heat, and it survives freezing. When a double-strand DNA molecule is opened, the exposed single-strand DNA can easily break. That's where ATR comes into play, it protects and responds to single-strand formation. A cancer cell is hyper-sensitive to ATR inhibition, which we identify as the Achilles heel of cancer. Our work showed that normal cells can live with a reduced level of the ATR activity, so it makes it a good target for cancer therapy." #ApreaTherapeutics #CancerTreatment #TargetedTherapy #Oncology #Cancer #SyntheticLethality #DNADamageResponsePathway aprea.com Download the transcript here

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: My AI Model Delta Compared To Yudkowsky, published by johnswentworth on June 10, 2024 on LessWrong. Preamble: Delta vs Crux I don't natively think in terms of cruxes. But there's a similar concept which is more natural for me, which I'll call a delta. Imagine that you and I each model the world (or some part of it) as implementing some program. Very oversimplified example: if I learn that e.g. it's cloudy today, that means the "weather" variable in my program at a particular time[1] takes on the value "cloudy". Now, suppose your program and my program are exactly the same, except that somewhere in there I think a certain parameter has value 5 and you think it has value 0.3. Even though our programs differ in only that one little spot, we might still expect very different values of lots of variables during execution - in other words, we might have very different beliefs about lots of stuff in the world. If your model and my model differ in that way, and we're trying to discuss our different beliefs, then the obvious useful thing-to-do is figure out where that one-parameter difference is. That's a delta: one or a few relatively "small"/local differences in belief, which when propagated through our models account for most of the differences in our beliefs. For those familiar with Pearl-style causal models: think of a delta as one or a few do() operations which suffice to make my model basically match somebody else's model, or vice versa. This post is about my current best guesses at the delta between my AI models and Yudkowsky's AI models. When I apply the delta outlined here to my models, and propagate the implications, my models basically look like Yukowsky's as far as I can tell. This post might turn into a sequence if there's interest; I already have another one written for Christiano, and people are welcome to suggest others they'd be interested in. My AI Model Delta Compared To Yudkowsky Best guess: Eliezer basically rejects the natural abstraction hypothesis. He mostly expects AI to use internal ontologies fundamentally alien to the ontologies of humans, at least in the places which matter. Lethality #33 lays it out succinctly: 33. The AI does not think like you do, the AI doesn't have thoughts built up from the same concepts you use, it is utterly alien on a staggering scale. Nobody knows what the hell GPT-3 is thinking, not only because the matrices are opaque, but because the stuff within that opaque container is, very likely, incredibly alien - nothing that would translate well into comprehensible human thinking, even if we could see past the giant wall of floating-point numbers to what lay behind. What do my models look like if I propagate that delta? In worlds where natural abstraction basically fails, we are thoroughly and utterly fucked, and a 99% probability of doom strikes me as entirely reasonable and justified. Here's one oversimplified doom argument/story in a world where natural abstraction fails hard: 1. Humanity is going to build superhuman goal-optimizing agents. ('Cause, like, obviously somebody's going to do that, there's no shortage of capabilities researchers loudly advertising that they're aiming to do that exact thing.) These will be so vastly more powerful than humans that we have basically-zero bargaining power except insofar as AIs are aligned to our interests. 2. We're assuming natural abstraction basically fails, so those AI systems will have fundamentally alien internal ontologies. For purposes of this overcompressed version of the argument, we'll assume a very extreme failure of natural abstraction, such that human concepts cannot be faithfully and robustly translated into the system's internal ontology at all. (For instance, maybe a faithful and robust translation would be so long in the system's "internal language" that the transla...

Over the past 12 months the British Army has designed a model to train its entire force to a set standard. It will also have the credibility and capacity to train the follow-on force, whatever that is, when the time comes. The new way of training is built on three interlinked blocks – Tradewinds (that provides the skills at individual level within a sub-unit), Cyclone (the primary sub unit training block -designed to deliver individual and collective competencies), and Storm (a reinvigorated combined-arms, formation level event – the optimization phase). Within the current plan all sub-units will conduct a dedicated 10-week training period each and every year providing the UK with more military capability, more options for responses, and increased lethality across the British Army. More importantly, the new system is driven by the people within units – not the system. This means that, perhaps for the first time, the Army can exploit its people, their drive and determination to be ‘the best', and build on the differentiation in capabilities between units. The shift in emphasis is warranted: the British Army is so not the homogenous mass of yesteryear, meaning that a reversion to a Cold War training modalities would be disingenuous to the soldiers of today. As Major General Chris Barry tells us, shifting to a new way of training that best fits the demands of a smaller, busier, more technology dependent force of today (and tomorrow) was the only way to realise the operational demands and credibly deter adversaries.

Join me on the Truth From the Stand Podcast as I sit down with Troy Fowler to delve into the heart of bowhunting and arrow dynamics. We're diving deep into the world of hunting experiences, arrow spine, and fine-tuning those crucial shots. Troy drives home the critical nature of arrow flight, spotlighting how using underspined arrows can dramatically impact lethality out in the field. Plus, he shares invaluable insights into bare shafting and its profound effect on arrow trajectory. But wait, there's more! We're not just talking compound bows here. Traditional archery aficionados, listen up! Troy sheds light on how traditional techniques can inform your approach to arrow tuning, especially when you're wielding a compound bow. And let's not forget about arrow point weight – a small detail with massive implications for your shot's precision. We're also dissecting the broadhead game, folks. From sharpness to durability, we're weighing the pros and cons of single bevel versus three-blade broadheads and how they impact penetration and wound channels. And believe me, we're not skimping on the nitty-gritty details of arrow weight and speed, crucial factors for achieving that buttery-smooth flight every hunter dreams of. But here's the kicker: Troy spills the beans on why heavy arrows and single-bevel broadheads reign supreme when it comes to bone-crushing penetration. And before we wrap up, we're tackling the age-old question: What's the ideal angle for bagging that prized deer? Spoiler alert: It's all about accuracy and effectiveness, my friends. So, grab your gear, tune in, and let's up our bowhunting game together! WHAT TO EXPECT FROM PODCAST 386 Arrow flight is crucial for bowhunting success, and underspined arrows can reduce lethality. Bare shafting and tuning arrows can greatly improve arrow flight and accuracy. Traditional archery can provide valuable insights into arrow tuning and manipulation. Choosing the right broadhead is crucial, and sharpness and durability are key factors to consider. Single bevel broadheads are easy to sharpen and provide good penetration. Three-blade broadheads are also effective and offer consistent pass-through. One-piece machined heads are recommended for durability and performance. Shot placement is critical Shooting where the animal wants to be shot increases the chances of a successful kill. Arrow weight and speed play a role in achieving consistent flight and penetration. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: On the lethality of biased human reward ratings, published by Eli Tyre on November 17, 2023 on LessWrong. I'm rereading the List of Lethalities carefully and considering what I think about each point. I think I strongly don't understand #20, and I thought that maybe you could explain what I'm missing? 20. Human operators are fallible, breakable, and manipulable. Human raters make systematic errors - regular, compactly describable, predictable errors. To faithfully learn a function from 'human feedback' is to learn (from our external standpoint) an unfaithful description of human preferences, with errors that are not random (from the outside standpoint of what we'd hoped to transfer). If you perfectly learn and perfectly maximize the referent of rewards assigned by human operators, that kills them. It's a fact about the territory, not the map - about the environment, not the optimizer - that the best predictive explanation for human answers is one that predicts the systematic errors in our responses, and therefore is a psychological concept that correctly predicts the higher scores that would be assigned to human-error-producing cases. I think that I don't understand this. (Maybe one concrete thing that would help is just having examples.) * * * One thing that this could be pointing towards is the problem of what I'll call "dynamic feedback schemes", like RLHF. The key feature of a dynamic feedback scheme is that the AI system is generating outputs and a human rater is giving it feedback to reinforce good outputs and anti-reinforce bad outputs. The problem with schemes like this is there is adverse selection for outputs that look good to the human rater but are actually bad. This means that, in the long run, you're reinforcing initial accidental misrepresentation, and shaping it into more and more sophisticated deception (because you anti-reinforce all the cases of misrepresentation that are caught out, and reinforce all the ones that aren't). That seems very bad for not ending up in a world where all the metrics look great, but the underlying reality is awful or hollow, as Paul describes in part I of What Failure Looks Like. It seems like maybe you could avoid this with a static feedback regime, where you take a bunch of descriptions of outcomes, maybe procedurally generated, maybe from fiction, maybe from news reports, whatever, and have humans score those outcomes on how good they are, to build a reward model that can be used for training. As long as the ratings don't get fed back into the generator, there's not much systematic incentive towards training deception. ...Actually, on reflection, I suppose this just pushes the problem back one step. Now you have a reward model which is giving feedback to some AI system that you're training. And the AI system will learn to adversarially game the reward model in the same way that it would have gamed the human. That seems like a real problem, but it also doesn't seem like what this point from the list is trying to get at. It seems to be saying something more like "the reward model is going to be wrong, because there's going to be systematic biases in the human ratings." Which, fair enough, that seems true, but I don't see why that's lethal. It seems like the reward model will be wrong in some places, and we would lose value in those places. But why does the reward model need to be an exact, high fidelity representation, across all domains, in order to not kill us? Why is a reward model that's a little off, in a predictable direction, catastrophic? First things first: What you're calling the "dynamic feedback schemes" problem is indeed a lethal problem which I think is not quite the same as Yudkowsky's #20, as you said. "there's going to be systematic biases in the human ratings" is... technically correct, but I think a mi...

Many of these individuals did not want to be, or at least would have preferred not to be vaccinated. He talks about the mental and physical strain of discharging such a mission. We also talk about the recruiting crisis in the Army, and some of the factors that Ryan perceives to be responsible for it, including military leadership being more concerned with politics, political correctness and culture war issues rather than focusing solely on the well being, training and lethality of the troops. Ryan talks about the history of the Army pulling off some stunning military feats and how the current iteration of its leadership, as well as the greater societal zeitgeist, has seemingly become unmoored from this legacy. And in general we talk about the schism between the people actually serving in the Army vs. the officers and leadership corps that betray their own service people in order to further their careers. We also discuss the importance of closing the gap of understanding and empathy between U.S. civilians and the military personnel. This is a highly significant conversation, imperative to meeting this current moment we find ourselves in. In the laws of war, there's a difference between sailors boarding a small boat from a sinking ship because they're out of the fight and marines climbing into small landing craft to get into the fight.
