These safeguards must address issues of privacy, emotional well-being, and safety, along with protecting our kids' cognitive and social development. The report also tells us in no uncertain terms, that parents need to manage their children's use of AI in the home. Parents, we live in a world where the potential dangers no longer exist only outside the walls of our homes. Thanks to digital technology, the dangers exist 24/7. Hive Digital Technologies Executive Chairman Frank Holmes joined Steve Darling from Proactive to announce a major infrastructure upgrade at the company's Grand Falls data centre in New Brunswick, alongside a key milestone in its public market presence. Through its subsidiary Buzz High Performance Computing, HIVE has contracted a new fibre optic network overbuild and carrier transport upgrade for the Grand Falls facility. The initiative represents a critical step in transforming the site into a Tier III high-performance computing (HPC)-enabled data centre, supporting the company's expansion into artificial intelligence and advanced computing workloads. HIVE expects to commit approximately $3.1 million over five years toward the project. Holmes noted that the investment aligns with the company's broader growth strategy, supported in part by proceeds from its recent $115 million exchangeable note offering. These funds are being directed toward scaling HIVE's GPU-powered AI infrastructure and advancing Tier III HPC data centre capabilities, with the New Brunswick campus conversion identified as a key objective for 2026. The Grand Falls site is already energized with approximately 70 megawatts of gross load capacity, with buildings and core electrical systems in place. Buzz High Performance Computing is now working to convert the facility into a 50-megawatt Tier III+ AI-focused data centre designed to support enterprise, government, and sovereign AI applications. In partnership with a Canadian telecommunications carrier, the upgrade will include the installation of dedicated high-capacity optical wavelength services, featuring multiple 100 Gbps and 400 Gbps fibre connections. Initial delivery of these high-speed services is expected to begin in the third quarter of 2026, with the carrier contributing significant additional capital to complete the broader network enhancements. In a separate development, Holmes confirmed that HIVE has received final approval to list its common shares on the Toronto Stock Exchange. Trading is set to commence at market open on May 12, 2026, with the company maintaining its “HIVE” ticker symbol on both the TSX and the Nasdaq Stock Market. Welcome to this episode of Thriving Matters. Our guest is Ryan Noonan, Leader of Digital Technologies and Innovation at Chevalier College, a day school with approximately 1,000 secondary students in the Southern Highlands, NSW, Australia. Listen in as we discuss a number of topics that impact how digital technologies and AI in education are ethically and inclusively drive classroom teaching and prepare students for future workplaces by emphasizing creativity, collaboration, and communication. Ryan highlighted the College's unique approach, centered on the "heart" of education, which includes academic skills, self-understanding, and capabilities, with a focus on wellbeing and personalized learning. He noted that while all students can benefit from these approaches with support, the pace of achievement varies. Ryan discussed the whole of community approach to their innovative teaching and learning framework centered around empathy and purpose, starting with self and community to build ethical skills. He emphasized the importance of assessing capabilities, particularly in younger students, and balancing academic rigor with practical workplace skills. Ryan highlighted the challenge of implementing frameworks across 100 teachers and stressed the need for dedicated support to facilitate change. You will hear actual teaching examples of using digital technologies and AI tools, specifically with Year 7 students. Ryan explained how students are encouraged to use tools like Google, Microsoft, and Canva to create personalized products, emphasizing the importance of effective prompting and understanding AI biases. Ryan also shared an example of redesigning assessments in Physical Education to incorporate AI-driven debates, allowing students to demonstrate their knowledge quickly and under time pressure. He stressed that AI use in the classroom always begins with student thinking, often through activities like quick writes, to ensure that AI responses are tailored to the student's prior understanding. He also highlighted a remarkable student achievement, where a Year 11 student developed a translation glove for the deaf, which was recognized by NASA for its innovative design. Ryan discussed Chev's strategy for integrating AI into education, focusing on three key areas: clarity, consistency, and capacity. He explained that they provide clear guidelines for AI use, ensure equal access to AI tools for all students, and build capacity among students, teachers, and parents. Ryan noted that while some students and parents are hesitant about AI, overall there hasn't been significant backlash. Ryan shared the ethical considerations of using AI tools in education, including student privacy, environmental impact, and bias. He emphasized the importance of teaching students to critically evaluate AI responses and avoid cognitive offloading. Ryan also predicted that within 5 years, AI agents will become more prevalent in the workplace, potentially impacting entry-level jobs and the way students are prepared for the future workforce. A very interesting and timely opportunity to amp up our response to using AI as tools for learning and teaching. On March 5th, 2026, Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, James Lawless TD, and Minister for Education and Youth, Hildegarde Naughton TD announced that almost €6 million in funding would be used to support thirty-two projects designed to engage the public in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) through the Research Ireland Discover Programme. The Research Ireland Discover Programme is a national initiative to widen participation in STEM. This year's projects will engage with people of all ages, from early childhood through to adulthood, through creative, community-embedded, and inclusive approaches to STEM engagement. Research Ireland Discover Programme awards NCI NCI's STEM for All: Multiple Inclusive STEM Engagements for Families, Communities project, led by Professor Paul Stynes, Dean of the School of Computing, has been awarded €60,000.00 in funding. About the project The STEM for All project builds on Research Ireland funded programming, supporting STEM identities, skills, and aspirations of children and families facing significant socio-economic challenges in Dublin's Inner City by creating multiple, accessible, inclusive opportunities for disenfranchised families to gain confidence, competence, and a sense of belonging in STEM, and the research and innovation world Professor Paul Stynes, Dean of NCI's School of Computing, shares, "This funding allows us to further advance our research into inclusive STEM education, building a stronger evidence base on what works in engaging children and families from underrepresented communities. As Principal Investigator, it enables us to evolve and scale our programmes in a way that is both research-informed and community-driven, strengthening pathways into STEM from an early age through to future study and careers. It also reinforces NCI's role in leading impactful, inclusive research that connects education, community engagement, and long-term societal outcomes." NCI's Early Learning Initiative (ELI) is a grassroots public purpose project addressing systemic inequalities; empowering at-risk children to discover their STEM identities through creative, engaging experiences that encourage scientific thinking. STEM is embedded across ELI's early intervention programmes: STEM Play & Learn (home visits, ages 4–6), weekly Coding Clubs (ages 7–12), Senior Coding Club (ages 13–16), STEM events for families. Local advocacy, accessible family learning, and parent engagement are central to inclusive education, building science capital, and resilient communities. Recognising parents' profound role in shaping children's learning outcomes and aspirations, ELI's programming expands, incorporating insights from their 2024 Parental Attitudes to STEM and Digital Technology research, including findings from in-depth case studies exploring long-term STEM engagement in disadvantaged families. To deepen impact and engagement several new elements will be introduced: Think Like a Scientist pilot, an initiative aimed at bridging a gap in children's scientific understanding through inquiry-based learning; bespoke parent technology clinics; and STEM 101 sessions demystifying core concepts, giving parents tools to support their child's learning. In parallel, ELI is developing longitudinal analysis framework exploring how sustained participation in the STEM programmes influences young people's aspirations and progression to third-level education. Brigina O'Riordan, Assistant Director of ELI's Community Services Programmes, shares, "This funding will enable children and families in Dublin Inner City to engage in high quality, accessible, and engaging STEM learning experiences, building confidence, curiosity, and awareness in the scientific method. The City Bar's Presidential Task Force on AI and Digital Technologies hosts today's podcast on President Trump's:  Winning the Race, America's AI Action Plan. Task Force co-chair Jerome Walker is joined by task force members Matthew Bacal (Davis Polk), Azish Filabi (American College of Financial Services), Robert Mahari (Stanford Codex), and Evan Abrams (Steptoe), to review the plan's three pillars and key action steps. Pillar One (“Accelerate AI Innovation”) is described as largely deregulatory, including agency review of rules and certain FTC/FCC actions, with targeted concerns such as ideological bias and synthetic media in the legal system, plus investments in open-source/open-weight models, data, interpretability, evaluations, and government/DoD adoption. Pillar Two (“Build American AI Infrastructure”) focuses on the physical side of AI—permitting for data centers and fabs, energy and grid expansion, semiconductors, water for cooling, workforce training, cybersecurity, and “security by design,” while anticipating trade-offs and litigation. Pillar Three (“Lead in International AI Diplomacy and Security”) balances support for exporting US “full stack” AI with tighter national security controls, including stronger export-control enforcement and participation in international bodies primarily to counter China. The conversation closes with suggestions for improving the plan by strengthening trust, safety/rights considerations, and maintaining flexibility as AI capabilities evolve. Atlantic Technological University (ATU) and Vodafone Ireland have successfully secured €4.6 million in funding from the EU's Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) Digital Fund to develop digital technologies for new online and on campus apprenticeship courses for engineering and construction students. In addition to the CEF funding, both ATU and Vodafone Ireland are investing in the initiative, bringing the total investment in Irish education to €6.25 million. The fund will be used to develop cutting-edge Extended Reality (XR) labs powered by a private 5G standalone network and on-campus edge computing delivered by Vodafone Ireland. Italian technology company FifthIngenium, part of the consortium, will leverage its expertise in designing cutting-edge educational applications to support the development of the XR experience. The project was launched by Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science James Lawless earlier today (Monday). The programme application process was supported by the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport. The initiative will be piloted at ATU Donegal, where students will gain access to immersive virtual and augmented reality environments that replicate physical labs and workshops. This funding will allow students to learn in new and flexible ways, combining classroom teaching with remote and virtual training - making education more accessible, especially for people living in rural areas or those balancing work, study and apprenticeship programmes. Specifically, the new training tools will include: Virtual construction labs where students can practice building using digital models. Immersive learning platforms that simulate real building and construction environments. 3D video streaming to help students learn technical skills through realistic simulations. The initiative is part of a wider €12.3 million European programme called 5G-SHARE, which encourages universities to work together and share knowledge across borders. ATU and Vodafone will collaborate with universities in Romania and the Czech Republic to test new ways of teaching using 5G. The fund was secured with the support of Vodafone's Connected Education programme - a major global Vodafone initiative designed to transform learning experiences through advanced technology and connectivity, creating a more inclusive digital society. Why this matters for Ireland The Government's renewed action plan published in November included a commitment to promote careers in construction including expanding apprenticeships and a 5-year action plan to boost recruitment, improve training opportunities, and build capacity across the construction sector. Welcoming the announcement, Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science James Lawless said: "The Government's investment to more than double apprenticeship funding since 2020 reflects our ambition to build a stronger, more sustainable Ireland. To realise this vision, we need skilled talent in construction and engineering. "Innovations and the use of advanced technologies, such as digital learning and connectivity, will accelerate progress and support us in achieving these ambitions across infrastructure, housing, and beyond. By enabling access to high-quality training nationwide, we are ensuring that Ireland is equipped to deliver the projects that will shape our future. We commend ATU, Vodafone Ireland and consortium partners in driving digital innovation in Irish education for the benefit of our students, workforce and our economy." Reviewing over 60 vendor announcements, Sean found identical phrases echoing repeatedly: "AI-powered," "integrated," "reduce analyst burden." The sameness forces buyers to sift through near-identical claims to find genuine differentiation.This reveals more than a marketing problem—it suggests that different technologies are being fed into the same promotional blender, possibly a generative AI one, producing standardized output regardless of what went in. When an entire industry converges on identical language to describe supposedly different technologies, meaningful technical discourse breaks down.But Sean's most troubling observation wasn't about marketing copy—it was about competence. When CISOs probe vendor claims about AI capabilities, they encounter vendors who cannot adequately explain their own technologies. When conversations moved beyond marketing promises to technical specifics, answers became vague, filled with buzzwords about proprietary algorithms.Reading Sean's analysis while reflecting on my own Black Hat experience, I realized we had witnessed something unprecedented: an entire industry losing the ability to distinguish between authentic capability and generated narrative—precisely as that same industry was studying external "narrative attacks" as an emerging threat vector.The irony was impossible to ignore. Black Hat 2025 sessions warned about AI-generated deepfakes targeting executives, social engineering attacks using scraped LinkedIn profiles, and synthetic audio calls designed to trick financial institutions. Security researchers documented how adversaries craft sophisticated deceptions using publicly available content. Meanwhile, our own exhibition halls featured countless unverifiable claims about AI capabilities that even the vendors themselves couldn't adequately explain.But to understand what we witnessed, we need to examine the very concept that cybersecurity professionals were discussing as an external threat: narrative attacks. These represent a fundamental shift in how adversaries target human decision-making. Unlike traditional cyberattacks that exploit technical vulnerabilities, narrative attacks exploit psychological vulnerabilities in human cognition. Think of them as social engineering and propaganda supercharged by AI—personalized deception at scale that adapts faster than human defenders can respond. They flood information environments with false content designed to manipulate perception and erode trust, rendering rational decision-making impossible.What makes these attacks particularly dangerous in the AI era is scale and personalization. AI enables automated generation of targeted content tailored to individual psychological profiles. A single adversary can launch thousands of simultaneous campaigns, each crafted to exploit specific cognitive biases of particular groups or individuals.But here's what we may have missed during Black Hat 2025: the same technological forces enabling external narrative attacks have already compromised our internal capacity for truth evaluation. When vendors use AI-optimized language to describe AI capabilities, when marketing departments deploy algorithmic content generation to sell algorithmic solutions, when companies building detection systems can't detect the artificial nature of their own communications, we've entered a recursive information crisis.From a sociological perspective, we're witnessing the breakdown of social infrastructure required for collective knowledge production. Industries like cybersecurity have historically served as early warning systems for technological threats—canaries in the coal mine with enough technical sophistication to spot emerging dangers before they affect broader society.But when the canary becomes unable to distinguish between fresh air and poison gas, the entire mine is at risk.This brings us to something the literary world understood long before we built our first algorithm. Jorge Luis Borges, the Argentine writer, anticipated this crisis in his 1940s stories like "On Exactitude in Science" and "The Library of Babel"—tales about maps that become more real than the territories they represent and libraries containing infinite books, including false ones. In his fiction, simulations and descriptions eventually replace the reality they were meant to describe.We're living in a Borgesian nightmare where marketing descriptions of AI capabilities have become more influential than actual AI capabilities. When a vendor's promotional language about their AI becomes more convincing than a technical demonstration, when buyers make decisions based on algorithmic marketing copy rather than empirical evidence, we've entered that literary territory where the map has consumed the landscape. And we've lost the ability to distinguish between them.The historical precedent is the 1938 War of the Worlds broadcast, which created mass hysteria from fiction. But here's the crucial difference: Welles was human, the script was human-written, the performance required conscious participation, and the deception was traceable to human intent. Listeners had to actively choose to believe what they heard.Today's AI-generated narratives operate below the threshold of conscious recognition. They require no active participation—they work by seamlessly integrating into information environments in ways that make detection impossible even for experts. When algorithms generate technical claims that sound authentic to human evaluators, when the same systems create both legitimate documentation and marketing fiction, we face deception at a level Welles never imagined: the algorithmic manipulation of truth itself.The recursive nature of this problem reveals itself when you try to solve it. This creates a nearly impossible situation. How do you fact-check AI-generated claims about AI using AI-powered tools? How do you verify technical documentation when the same systems create both authentic docs and marketing copy? When the tools generating problems and solving problems converge into identical technological artifacts, conventional verification approaches break down completely.My first Black Hat article explored how we risk losing human agency by delegating decision-making to artificial agents. But this goes deeper: we risk losing human agency in the construction of reality itself. When machines generate narratives about what machines can do, truth becomes algorithmically determined rather than empirically discovered.Marshall McLuhan famously said "We shape our tools, and thereafter they shape us." But he couldn't have imagined tools that reshape our perception of reality itself. We haven't just built machines that give us answers—we've built machines that decide what questions we should ask and how we should evaluate the answers.But the implications extend far beyond cybersecurity itself. This matters far beyond. If the sector responsible for detecting digital deception becomes the first victim of algorithmic narrative pollution, what hope do other industries have? Healthcare systems relying on AI diagnostics they can't explain. Financial institutions using algorithmic trading based on analyses they can't verify. Educational systems teaching AI-generated content whose origins remain opaque.When the industry that guards against deception loses the ability to distinguish authentic capability from algorithmic fiction, society loses its early warning system for the moment when machines take over truth construction itself.So where does this leave us? That moment may have already arrived. We just don't know it yet—and increasingly, we lack the cognitive infrastructure to find out.But here's what we can still do: We can start by acknowledging we've reached this threshold. We can demand transparency not just in AI algorithms, but in the human processes that evaluate and implement them. We can rebuild evaluation criteria that distinguish between technical capability and marketing narrative.And here's a direct challenge to the marketing and branding professionals reading this: it's time to stop relying on AI algorithms and data optimization to craft your messages. The cybersecurity industry's crisis should serve as a warning—when marketing becomes indistinguishable from algorithmic fiction, everyone loses. Social media has taught us that the most respected brands are those that choose honesty over hype, transparency over clever messaging. Brands that walk the walk and talk the talk, not those that let machines do the talking.The companies that will survive this epistemological crisis are those whose marketing teams become champions of truth rather than architects of confusion. When your audience can no longer distinguish between human insight and machine-generated claims, authentic communication becomes your competitive advantage.Most importantly, we can remember that the goal was never to build machines that think for us, but machines that help us think better.The canary may be struggling to breathe, but it's still singing. The question is whether we're still listening—and whether we remember what fresh air feels like.Let's keep exploring what it means to be human in this Hybrid Analog Digital Society.
