Like most newlyweds, Kim Patton and her husband looked forward to conceiving a family or their own. As the years went by, it became clear that they needed to look into alternative options. But Kim was reluctant. The internal leap from dreaming of conceiving her own children to reckoning with the disappointment that the dream looked different now was a deeply tender wound. She gave her sorrow to the Lord. She and her husband began fostering children, and have since adopted children to complete the family the Lord ordained for them. Sometimes family looks different from what we envisioned, but the blessing of God's plan is worth it all. Most of us don't stop working—we just stop expecting it to matter. The tasks keep coming, but the meaning quietly thins out. But if most of life is lived in what feels temporary, what gives it substance–and keeps us going?
When I invited Cynthia Saarie to be a guest, it was based upon her work in the cannabis industry (www.bestcopynow.com) where she helps cannabis companies, and all companies, improve their customer interface. What I learned after she accepted the invitation was that most of her life she has been a student of scripture. Cynthia's life is far from over, but the life she has lived is a life of victory. Victory where defeat appeared to be the only option.

Do you think good deeds ever go in vain? Acts of justice towards the poor, displays of hospitality to foreigners, or times when you've been inconvenienced to help someone—do they truly matter? What about choosing integrity when it's easier to cheat, or telling the truth when it's simpler to lie? Consider how bringing healing to a relationship with kind words or actions can make a difference. In both the short term and the long term, you may always be observed, and no act of kindness goes unnoticed. As God's child, it is You who can heal a fractured world. He has a purpose for your life, and all the goodness you do in Him is never wasted. How can our lives reflect a worthwhile purpose and be a blessing to others? How do our simple acts of kindness and goodness contribute to lasting healing in a broken world?Join us as we conclude our series filled with fulfillment, A Worthy Pursuit. Welcome to Season 19 of Other People's Shoes titled "X-Ray."
August 25th Sermon
Today's guest is Kim Patton. She is the author of Nothing Wasted: Struggling Well Through Difficult Seasons and the host of the Book Therapy podcast. Kim and Kevin have been married for fourteen years and have two beautiful daughters. Growing up in a large family led Kim to dream of a family of her own. Hosting baby showers for her friends filled her with joy. She believed, “Someday it will be me.”At the end of a long and difficult infertility journey, God assured Kim she would be a mother, but it wouldn't look exactly like her dreams. Their home is now filled with the laughter and joy of two daughters who were adopted from the same birth mother.Infertility has been Kim's biggest challenge, but she and Kevin have fought to overcome his ongoing struggles with seizures. Kim chose Nothing Wasted as the title of her book because she believes, “The tears I have cried through the trials of these years have been many. Those tears were caught. They were held, saved, and used for another purpose. Nothing was wasted.” Notable quotes from this episode with Kim Patton: · “I may grieve, complain, and even wallow in the pain I'm feeling during hard seasons. But I'm not giving up. Endurance is admirable, and the years we spend during challenging seasons are building up muscles to endure patiently and struggle well. I'm not giving up.”· “The way that God carried us through that was just slowly, persistently showing up, giving me grace, giving me love, answering prayers.”· “And that day, He ripped me apart because He opened my eyes to the needs of the world and to the beauty of adoption . . . He made me have immense compassion for the brokenness of children whose parents cannot take care of them or died.” Bible verse: · 2 Corinthians 12:9 “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Connect with Kim Patton:Her website: https://www.kimpatton.com On Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/kimberly.patton.39On Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kimpatton730Send me a COMMENT or QUESTION!

There are going to be moments in your life when the lights go out. Where you're having to follow God in the dark. When the promises of God you read in his word (or that He's whispered into your heart) that at one time were so clear and certain. There will come a time when they will seem like an allusion. It will all seem like an impossibility. We spend so much of our lives living in that space. Where our God seems silent and our problems are very loud. Where God seems distant and obscure and our suffering is not.And if you're in that space today, this is one more nudge of the HolySpirit calling you to stiffen your spine, stand firm in your faith, and trust in the faithfulness of your God.

There were some who said to themselves indignantly, “Why was the ointment wasted like that? For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor.” And they scolded her. But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a beautiful thing to me.” Listen to the Full Devotional For Today's Readings: https://freedomstorymedia.com/fbtf213 Subscribe, rate, and share this episode to spread the word of God! Listen to and share our latest podcast with Joel Lesses. Henry and Joel discuss lessons from lived experience with mental health distress, including: • lessons from trauma • isolation, loneliness • marginalization • existential crisis • how mental health distress may be a calling to become a healer leader and teacher in community. Extracting lessons and asking the 'why' slowly begins to uncover answers, reveals meaning and purpose, calls us to understanding and wisdom of life's deeper questions. There, passions reveal themselves, including for Joel poetry, spirituality and mysticism. Education Training Center (https://www.joellesses.com), Joel's agency seeks to address areas of need for individuals marginalized by mental health, trauma, and psychological distress without distinction to cause. Joel Lesses founded the Education Training Center as a means of counseling people marginalized by trauma, addiction, and psychological distress, and its effects including incarceration, homelessness, and institutionalization. He is dedicated to reframing mental health distress as a potential spiritual marker and existential opportunity. Also, vested in Poetry and Literature as an educator and poet, through writing workshops, poetry roundtables, poetry, and a manuscript. Finally, other passions include the intersection of poetry, spirituality, science, and phenomenology shared and disparate in the human experience, and transformative power of self inquiry and introspection through contemplative and meditative practices explored in his podcast, 'Unraveling Religion' mystical and practical discussions as an exploration of spirituality and its relation to religion and psychology. Joel was nominated and voted previously 'Buffalo's Best Poet'; he has been published in various magazines and publications, founded Ground and Sky Poetry Series, and facilitated numerous poetry workshops. Darren and Mo catch up after a Thanksgiving break and dissect John 6; how Jesus pushed the disciples to do more than they ever could think or imagine. And how those stories in our own lives are what makes us stronger in our faith, and turn our hearts towards him. We also discuss current events around the topic of censorship, narratives and misinformation and how to stand for truth.
