Bob Schwahn | Lead Pastor | September 27, 2026 Referenced Scripture: Ephesians 1:13-23, Hebrews 4:12, 2 Peter 1:20-21, Revelation 12:10 Reflection Questions:1. Have you ever questioned whether you are truly a child of God? Explain. What was it that caused you to question or doubt? If those questions were resolved, how were they resolved? If not, why not? What are some other reasons that people may question whether they belong to God? 2. Read Ephesians 1:13-14. What are some observations you can make about the Holy Spirit from this text? According to the text, who has the Holy Spirit? When do we receive the Holy Spirit (ie. when does the Holy Spirit come into our lives)? What does the “sealing” of the Holy Spirit mean for us? What does it mean that the Holy Spirit is a “deposit” and how do experience that reality? What is the “inheritance” that Paul speaks of? 3. Then, Paul prays the Spirit would actively work in our life… Read Ephesians 1:17. What does Paul expect/want the Holy Spirit to do in our lives? What is the difference between knowing God and knowing “about” God? How is it that we grow up in knowing God and not knowing about God? 4. Read Ephesians 1:18a. What is the “hope to which he has called you”? What is your hope in right now? Is it in something that can be taken away in this life or the next? Explain. Why is it difficult if not impossible to live well without hope in this life? 5. Read Ephesians 1:18b. How does it make you feel to know that God sees you as His rich inheritance? What does this say about how God truly sees you? 6. We learn to KNOW and DISCERN God's voice through: HOLY SPIRIT, WORD, and the COMMUNITY of BELIEVERS (CHURCH). What is the danger if any one of these three is missing? Which one of these do you need to grow in currently? How specifically can you move toward that in this next season? Can God Still Be Good When Life Isn't If God is good, why do bad things happen? Why does He allow suffering, injustice, loss, and pain—and where is He when it happens to you? During Focus Student Weekend, we're getting unfiltered about one of the hardest questions people ask about faith. In this message, we trace the story of Scripture from creation and humanity's brokenness to the cross, the empty tomb, and God's promise to make everything new. The Bible doesn't pretend suffering isn't real or shame us for asking why. It shows us that God made the world good, sin brought brokenness into it, and Jesus entered that brokenness to rescue us. He wept beside a grave, carried our sin and suffering to the cross, defeated death through His resurrection, and promised that evil will not have the final word. If you've wondered why God didn't stop what happened, questioned whether He still cares, or struggled to believe He is good after experiencing pain, this message is for you. Your questions do not disqualify you from faith, and your story is not finished. The crack is real, but it does not get the last word. Jesus does. If it's not good yet, God's not done yet. What are you really living for—and who gets to decide what matters most in your life? In Philippians 1:12–21, Paul writes from prison while facing circumstances he cannot control, criticism he cannot stop, and a future he cannot predict. Yet Paul refuses to let his chains, other people's opinions, or an uncertain outcome determine the direction of his life. He has already decided what matters most: "For to me, to live is Christ." If your happiness depends on being accepted, reaching a certain level of success, finding the right relationship, or getting through your current season, you will always be controlled by something you cannot guarantee. But when Jesus becomes the center of your life, your circumstances no longer get the final word. This message will challenge you to examine what is really driving your decisions, shaping your identity, and determining your joy. You may not be able to control everything that happens to you, but you can decide what matters most to you. Even in the place you didn't choose, Jesus still matters—and God is still working. Are you waiting for something to change before you allow yourself to be happy? "I'll be happy when I get the promotion, the bills are paid, the relationship is restored, or this difficult season finally ends." But life keeps moving the finish line—and if your joy depends on your circumstances, it will always feel just out of reach. In Philippians 4:4–7, Paul writes about rejoicing while sitting in a prison cell with no release date and no guarantee that his circumstances will improve. His words reveal that biblical joy isn't pretending everything is okay or forcing yourself to feel positive. Joy is a decision to focus on who God is, thank Him out loud, release your anxiety through prayer, and receive His peace before anything around you changes. If you've become discouraged, anxious, cynical, or tired of waiting for life to get better, this message will help you choose joy in the middle of an unresolved season. Does God still speak—and how can you know when it's really Him? In 1 Samuel 3, Samuel heard God calling his name but didn't recognize His voice. God didn't become frustrated or give up on him. He called again. Samuel's story reveals that hearing God isn't reserved for pastors or people who seem especially spiritual. God wants to speak to you personally, and you can learn to recognize His voice. Where do you see yourself most tempted to make secondary issues feel like primary issues?(Examples: politics, worship styles, parenting, schooling, spiritual gifts, cultural preferences, personal convictions.) Follow-up: Why do you think we are so quick to turn differences of conviction into judgments about someone's faith?   2. Romans 14:3 says, “God has accepted them.” How should remembering that God has welcomed someone change the way we approach believers who think differently than we do? Follow-up: What is the difference between "accepting" someone and simply "agreeing" with someone?   3. Paul says, “Who are you to judge someone else's servant?” (Romans 14:4). Where are you most tempted to take a role that belongs only to Jesus? Romans 14:8 says, “Whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.” How does belonging to Jesus change the way we hold our convictions, opinions, and freedoms?
