How to Walk by Faith When You Can't See the Way | The Breakdown Podcast Have you ever felt like God led you the long way around? You've been praying for a breakthrough, but instead of doors opening, everything just feels harder. This week, we sat down with Pastor James to break down his message “How to Walk by Faith When You Can't See the Way.” Together, we talk about what it means to trust God when life doesn't go according to plan—and how sometimes, He leads us through what looks impossible not to punish us, but to prepare us. We also dive into some of the questions you might've been asking during the message: How do I keep trusting when I can't see what God is doing? What does it look like to shift my focus from problems to promises? And how can I take the next step when I don't know what's ahead? If you've ever felt stuck, confused, or discouraged in the waiting, this conversation is for you—a reminder that even when you can't see Him working, God still has your back. All give us clarity as to our identity as Jesus followers. What insights stand out to you about these passages? Would you add any passages to this list? What does it mean to be a child of God? 2) Our culture teaches us to find our identity or to create our identity by achievement. Where do you see in your life or in the lives around you evidence of achievement creating or supporting identity? 3) Read 1st John 3:1, 1st Peter 2:9 and Eph 1:4-5. Each describes God's love for his children. Describe what stands out to you about God's love. Would you add other scriptures that emphasize God's love for his children? 4) As God's children what does it look like to receive his love for us? Bob Schwahn | Lead Pastor | October 5, 2025 Referenced Scripture: John 17:20-23, Ephesians:4:1-6, Galatians 3:26-28, Ephesians 6:12,John 13:34-35 Reflection Questions: 1) The primary metaphor the Bible uses to describe the church is a family. Does the church feel like a spiritual family to you? Why or why not? 2) What challenges keep churches from experiencing a sense of family? How can we overcome these challenges? 3) What are common things that create divisions in the American church? Do you think it is possible to build bridges over these divides? Why or why not? When could it be warranted to choose to divide? READ John 17:20-23“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. 5) Is it even realistic to think that believers could be “one” just as the Father and the Son are “one” and “brought to complete unity”? What makes you skeptical about this? What makes you hopeful that this could happen? According to verse 23, why is unity central to the mission of the church (helping people come to know and follow Jesus). 6) What would you need to do differently in order to move toward the unity that Jesus prayed for in the church? What is your NEXT STEP to move toward Jesus' vision for the church? 7) Do you think it is possible for people to be united in Christ when they think differently about God, the Bible, the Church, Culture, Social Issues, Politics, etc? Why or why not? How could that kind of unity be possible? What would it require of Christ followers? 8) How did the life and death of Jesus model a love for our enemies? How can this kind of love supersede the divisions we see in our culture? Who is our real enemy? Ephesians 6:12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 9) How can we practically battle him and not people we disagree with? Why do bad things happen if God is good? It's a question we've all wrestled with at some point. If God is powerful enough to stop evil, why doesn't He? In “If God Is Good, Why Do Bad Things Happen?”, Pastor James unpacks how evil doesn't disprove God but points us to Him. We'll see that the real problem isn't just the evil around us but the sin within us—and how Jesus came not to condemn the world but to save it. God is overcoming evil through His people, and that changes everything. Everyone helping someone take steps to follow Christ. Obedience. Why is it so hard to do what God tells us, when we know it's the right thing? But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul?” Matthew 16:24-26 NLT

Share a story from your life where you experienced hearing the Holy Spirit whisper to you?  What gave you confidence that you were hearing from the Holy Spirit?   2. In your experience, what makes hearing the whispers of the Holy Spirit difficult or confusing?  How confident are you that you are actually hearing the whispers of the Holy Spirit in your day to day life?  What questions do you have about how to hear His whispers?   3. What things in your life create “noise” that make hearing the Holy Spirit more difficult?  What could you do to lower the “noise” in your life?   READ: Galatians 5:19-2319 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.   4. What fruit do you observe in your life from the flesh and/or from the Spirit?  What evidence do you see in the culture, in the church, and in your life that we may be living in the flesh?   5. How would the church be different if it was characterized by the fruit of the Spirit? How might the church be viewed differently by those outside the church that don't follow Jesus?   6. How does our engagement in the voice of the world (marketing, news media, social media, podcasts, entertainment, etc.) affect the formation of our souls?  How much time do you spend each day listening to these voices vs. time in the Word, prayer, and with the Body of Christ?  What are the implications to your soul?   What's your next step? * Connect: We'd love to connect with you! It withdraws him from the community. The more isolated a person is, the more destructive will be the power of sin over him…. Sin wants to remain unknown. It shuns the light. In the darkness of the unexpressed it poisons the whole being of a person. Reflection Questions: Romans 7:21-25 21 So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. For in my inner being I delight in God's law; but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me. What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!... 1. In Romans 7, Paul describes his internal battle with sin. How would you describe your own battle to overcome sin in your life? 2. Paul uses the term “flesh” to describe what we are battling against. How would you define “flesh” as Paul uses it in the Bible? 3. The battle is between our flesh and the Spirit. Paul says the battleground is the MIND. Why is the mind so important? How does sin often start in our mind(thoughts)? Explain. Romans 8:13For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live. 4. How can we put to death sin in our life by the power of the Holy Spirit? John 16:8When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong (conviction) about sin and righteousness and judgment… Romans 8:1Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 5. What is the difference between Conviction and Condemnation? Why is conviction a good thing and condemnation a bad thing? How can we experience conviction while at the same time not experience condemnation? 6. What does it mean to have our mind set on the “flesh”? Describe. Give examples. 7. What does it mean to have our mind set on the “Spirit”? What are things that the Spirit draws our attention to? 8. What is your mind set on? How can we know what our mind is set on? He played his first gig at just eight years old and went on to perform in cover bands throughout his youth in West Virginia.A 1989 graduate of Greenbrier East High School, Mike also developed a strong interest in Drum Corps International (DCI) during that time. That same year, he enlisted in the United States Army, proudly serving for a decade, including during Operation Joint Endeavor in Germany and Hungary. In 1993, Mike relocated to Roanoke, Virginia, where he began working with the RMH Police Department before starting a career as a tractor-trailer driver for several companies. Throughout his professional life, music remained a constant. He played drums in churches and with accomplished worship teams, a path that eventually led him to Journey Church, where he continues to serve as part of the worship ministry. In 2019, Mike launched his own bathroom renovation business, which he still operates today. His life reflects a balance of service, music, hard work, and faith, and he remains grateful for the opportunities and people who have shaped his journey.

Why is it important to understand what God has provided for us in His indwelling Holy Spirit and how to experience Him? (His person/power/and presence) 2. Why do you think many followers of Jesus have confusion around the person and work of the Holy Spirit? How have you experienced confusion? What are questions you still have about the Holy Spirit? 3. One of the themes of Romans 8 is the assurance of salvation that we receive from the Holy Spirit. (Assurance → the confidence and inner certainty a follower of Jesus has about their position as a child of God and the reality of their eternal salvation through faith in Jesus Christ.) Why is it important to have assurance of our salvation? What challenges would we experience in our faith if we were not sure where we stood before God? How would you think/feel/live? 4. Life often feels like it moves faster than we can catch up—but what if peace isn't in controlling every moment, but in trusting Him to orchestrate the right one?  In “Being In God's Timing Produces Peace,” Pastor Billy Island teaches us that when life feels out of control, peace seems out of reach. But Ecclesiastes reminds us that God makes everything beautiful in its time. When we stop striving to make life happen on our own terms and start trusting His timing, that's when true peace begins.
