On this episode of Mature Me: On the Move, Rich sits down with JJ—husband, preacher, and pastor of Journey Church in Orlando—for a conversation about calling, character, and learning to lead through both clarity and cost.JJ doesn't just talk about faith—he's lived it.He shares the story of losing his son, planting a church through grief, and how that journey reshaped his understanding of trust, purpose, and the voice of God.They talk through how he prepares to preach, the art of communication, and how creativity and illustration can carry truth in a way people can truly receive it—without ever watering it down.More than anything, JJ reminds us that who we are always speaks louder than what we say. This one's for the leaders, the pastors, the preachers…for anyone learning to lead while carrying the full weight of the call.Final episode before VOUSCon.

✅ Why smartphones make us feel god-like (and why that's dangerous) ✅ The 4 research-backed rules for kids and technology ✅ How a church-wide digital fast transformed an entire community ✅ What a therapy dog named Bruce taught him about presence SUMMARY: Parenting teenagers in a digital world feels impossible—especially when you're struggling with your own phone addiction. In this episode, Darren Whitehead (dad of 4 teenage girls) shares how he led his entire church through a 40-day digital fast and discovered the secret to high-definition parenting. You'll hear why smartphones make us feel god-like, how to have the phone conversation with your kids, and what a Havanese dog named Bruce taught him about presence. FULL SHOW NOTES: Key Takeaways: Smartphones simulate God's attributes (omniscience, omnipresence, omnipotence) and we weren't built for limitless power Collective action is more effective than individual willpower—do digital fasts as a community, not alone No smartphones before high school, no social media before 16, phone-free schools, and more unsupervised outdoor play When you put your phone down, you experience parenting in "high definition"—fully present and aware of these fleeting moments The most precious moments with your kids are being exchanged for infinitely trivial distractions Guest Darren Whitehead is the author of The Digital Fast and senior pastor of Journey Church in Franklin, Tennessee. He's a former youth pastor turned girl dad of four teenage daughters (ages 11, 14, 16, and 18). Darren has led thousands of people through digital detoxes and speaks regularly about technology, parenting, and spiritual formation. Bob Schwahn | Lead Pastor | June 1, 2025 Referenced Scripture: 10:14-17, Matthew 10:19-20, John 16:7-8 Reflection Questions:1. “Preach the Gospel at all times, and if necessary use words.” -Saint Francis of AssisiEvaluate this statement. What you like or dislike about it? 2. What has caused you to be hesitant to talk to your friend or neighbor about your story of faith in Jesus? Have you had any positive or negative experiences? Explain. Take time to write out the 3 parts of your faith story… 3. Part 1: My Life before JesusWhat was your life like before you met Jesus? If you grew up in church knowing about Jesus, what was your life before you got serious following Him? 4. Part 2: How I Met JesusHow did you become a Christ-follower? Did you go through a particularly tough time in your life that led you to God? Did a friend invite you to a church service? Did a family member introduce you to Jesus? Did an experience inspire you to fully commit to following? 5. Part 3: My Life since I Met JesusWhat difference has following Jesus made in your life? How has knowing Him impacted how you walk through both the good and the hard times in life? In the sermon we talked about the difference between religion and Christianity was DO vs. DONE. How would you explain this idea to someone who was not a person of faith? Questions to help understand where a person is at on their faith journey: * Do you have any kind of spiritual background?* Do you have a belief in God? What do you think God is like? How did you come to those beliefs about God?* Do you think you are moving toward God, away from God, or staying about the same?* If you were to stand before God and He were to ask you, why should I let you into heaven, what would you say? 6. Reflect: What do you like or dislike about these questions? What questions would you add? 7. Romans 10:14-15, 17 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” ... Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ. Why would you say it is necessary to use our words to help someone understand the “good news” of the gospel? How would explain the good news to someone with no faith background? What are the things they need to understand in order to make a decision to follow Jesus? 8. Who is someone in your life you could share your story with this week? Bob Schwahn | Lead Pastor | May 25, 2025 Referenced Scripture: Mark 10:45, John 13:1-17, Luke 18:40-41, 2 Corinthians 5:18-20 Reflection Questions: 1. What does serving someone communicate about them? What does it communicate about the one who serves? What makes a lifestyle of serving and focusing on the needs of others difficult? What keeps us from serving others? 2. Why is serving important to the mission of helping people come to know and follow Jesus? 3. Read John 13:1-17. What observations do you make about serving from this example of Jesus? 4. Why do you think Jesus chose to wash His disciples' feet the night before His crucifixion? How would you have felt if you had been there? 5. Why is it significant that God himself took on the task of the lowest slave? 6. Jesus modeled that he is willing to serve people that would betray him, deny him, and desert him. What does this teach us about who we are called to serve? Why can this be difficult? Do you think this is realistic? 7. Jesus served in proximity → those that he had personal contact with. Who are the people in your sphere of influence that you could intentionally serve? Why do you think it might be important to know HOW they need to be served? How can we learn what their real needs are? 8. Jesus served with the POWER of God. How can we access the power of God as we seek to love and serve people? How can praying for people be a tangible way to serve them? How can you know how to pray for people? 9. Jesus promises that we will be blessed if we follow his example. How have you been blessed by serving others? How have you been blessed by others serving you? 10. Have you ever asked someone, “Do you trust me?” It's a question that we've all asked at least once in our lives. But what if God asked you that same questions? In “Do You Trust Me,” Shana Hilton shares that we often struggle to trust God because of fear, lack of time spent with Him, or the belief that our way is better. But true peace and direction come when we surrender control, immerse ourselves in His Word, and acknowledge that God's ways are higher. Everyone helping someone take steps to follow Christ. Are you running low—on patience, strength, or hope? What if the answer isn't in pushing harder, but in trusting deeper? In this message, “Jesus Did What At A Wedding?”, Pastor John unpacks Jesus' first miracle at a wedding in Cana, where He turned water into wine. It's more than a party trick—it's a powerful reminder that when you invite Jesus into your situation and trust His timing, He can take what feels empty and fill it with purpose. Don't just chase the miracle—follow the One behind it. Everyone helping someone take steps to follow Christ. Logan Holloman | Next Gen Pastor Referenced Scripture: John 11:16, John 20:24-29, Matthew 28:17-17 Reflection Questions:1. Our doubts are often disappointments in disguise. Are there any disappointments that are defining your experience? 2. Thomas was honest enough with himself and the other disciples that he was disappointed with the resurrection. Do you have a group of people you can be that vulnerable with? 3. Read and underline Matthew 28:16-17. What does it tell us about the heart of God that he put the keys to the kingdom in the shaky hands of people who were something less than certain? 4. Thomas cries out “My Lord and My God” after his interaction with the risen Jesus. Do you believe, or are you willing to believe that there is a loving God who is greater than yourself who wants to have a relationship with you? 5. Scripture shows us, in people like Thomas and Abraham, how the process of revealing both our trust and lack of trust stretches our faith. Where have you been demanding certainty (around a decision, a course of action, or a future uncertainty) where God might be using “strategic ambiguity” to grow you more? 6. What have you been taught, or assumed, that doesn't make sense or causes you to keep your distance from God? 7. Jesus' life, death, and resurrection reveal he always makes the first step towards being all in for you and I. What step might he be inviting you to take this today? What's your next step? * Connect: We'd love to connect with you! Have you ever read a story in the Bible and said to yourself, ‘Jesus Did What?' Well, that's exactly what this new message series is talking about! Join us as we walk through the miracles Jesus did that made the people around Him ask, “Did Jesus just do that?" In "Jesus Did What in the Water?", Pastor James teaches us that we see that Jesus didn't just step into the water to be baptized—He came to take away our sin and give us new life through His Spirit. John the Baptist points to Jesus as the Lamb of God and God's Chosen One. Baptism is our response, an outward sign of the inward transformation Jesus makes possible. Does the word 'family' bring a good feeling or a bad feeling? Does it make you feel warm and close or isolated and alone? This Sunday Mike Mozingo speaks to what it means to be in God's family. Bob Schwahn | Lead Pastor | April 20, 2025 Referenced Scripture:1 Corinthians 15:3-19, John 7:5, Mark 3:20-21, Matthew 27:62-66, Mark 16:6-7, Luke 22:32-62, Romans 6:4, John 11:25-26 Reflection Questions: 1. What have been some “fork in the road” moments you have experienced on your spiritual journey with God? How have those shaped your life either positively or negatively? 2. Why is it important to know that the truth of Christianity is rooted in an event of human history (resurrection of Jesus) and not simply the life and teachings of Jesus? 3. Do you believe that the changed lives of the disciples and Jesus' closest followers is compelling evidence for the actual resurrection of Jesus? Why or why not? 4. What other evidence convinces you that Jesus actually rose bodily from the dead? Do you have any doubts or questions? Explain. 5. Read Luke 22:60-62 Peter replied, “Man, I don't know what you're talking about!” Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly. 6. What expression do you think was on the face of Jesus as he looked at Peter in the midst of his failure and betrayal? Why do you think that? 7. How does Jesus look at you in the midst of your failures in this life? How is Jesus looking at you now? How does our answer to this question affect how we will respond to Jesus? Explain. 8. Are you at a fork in the road moment with Jesus right now? Why or why not? What would it look like to go ALL IN with Him at your fork in the road? What is your next step toward Him? What's your next step? * Connect: We'd love to connect with you! What did Jesus leave behind in the tomb, and why should we care? In ‘What Jesus Left Behind,' Pastor James teaches us that the empty tomb isn't just an empty tomb—it's a powerful invitation to freedom. When Jesus left the grave clothes behind, He showed us that we don't have to stay bound by what once held us. Whether it's anger, anxiety, addiction, shame, or hopelessness, the resurrection proves that we can step into new life. Because Jesus walked out of the grave, we can walk out of anything. Sara Dangerfield and her husband, Dan, lead Journey Church in Minot, ND. Fun fact: Sara's sister is married to Stephen's brother -- so Sara and Stephen are basically in-law...in-laws (or something like that). Sara recently published her first book -- Leading Spiritual Hoarders. In this episode, we talk about the importance of being a disciple who makes disciples. We talk about how people become spiritual hoarders by keeping the good news about Jesus to themselves instead of sharing it with others. Sara shares practical advice, like creating a list of 100 people you see throughout a typical week -- to determine if they are following Jesus, not a a follower, or unknown -- in order to be intentional with conversations. Sara also talks about navigating when dreams change.Follow Sara Dangerfield on InstagramBuy Leading Spiritual Hoarders on AmazonVisit Sara's website | saradangerfield.com Follow Going Somewhere Podcast on InstagramAsk a Question or Suggest a Guest | goingsomewherepod.comSubscribe to us on YoutubePodcast Music: Electric Ten by Broke in SummerGoing Somewhere is a resource of Northview ChurchStephen's Instagram & Website
