Allyship Is Awkward: How Therapists Can Keep Showing Up Anyway What if the awkwardness of ally work is not a sign you are doing it wrong, but the actual work? Curt Widhalm, LMFT, and Katie Vernoy, LMFT explore what it looks like to do ally work as a therapist when you hold majority identities the people around you do not share. They move across three zones where this shows up: with clients in the therapy room, with colleagues and consultants in professional spaces, and in broader community and advocacy work. Drawing on their own missteps and on the work of creators like Ashani Mfuko of Anti-Racism School Is In Session and Dr. Raquel Martin of Mind Ya Mental, Curt and Katie make a direct case to white, cis, straight, and other majority-identity therapists: cultural humility is not a credential, fragility shifts the labor onto the people around you, and the strong feelings that come with ally work belong with other allies, not with clients or colleagues of color. This is an episode about staying in the room, decentering yourself, and learning to fail better. In this episode, we discuss: Why ally work is inherently awkward, and why that is not a problem to be solved How fragility, over-apologizing, and gold-star seeking shift the emotional labor onto clients and colleagues of color What repair actually looks like when a cross-cultural rupture happens in session Why being called out by a client can be a sign the relationship is alive enough to repair How to process defensiveness and hurt with other allies instead of with clients or colleagues of color Why cultural humility is not a free pass, and what therapists owe their own continuing education How consultation with diverse colleagues protects clients from being conscripted as your teacher Ally work is ongoing. The goal is not to stop making mistakes. The goal is to keep failing better. Jeff Liker was guest number three on this podcast back in August 2006. He has been back seven times since, which makes him one of the most frequent guests in the show's history. For this episode, I pulled clips from across those eight conversations, going back almost twenty years. What stood out on the relisten was how much hasn't changed. The lean tools are better known now. There are more books, more case studies, more conferences. The deeper thing Jeff was naming in 2006 - that companies want the words without the work - is the same thing he is still saying in 2026. These aren't his greatest hits. They are the ideas that keep showing up. In this episode, Jeff talks about: The two percent problem: why so few companies have deeply implemented TPS as a system, even after decades of trying How long real transformation takes when Toyota opens a brand new plant under ideal conditions (hint: it isn't fourteen weeks) Why "picking and choosing" lean practices often reinforces the existing management system instead of changing it Fujio Cho on what was hardest to teach Americans about TPS, and why he had to walk the floor every day to teach it Andon, hansei, and why we keep trying to implement a "perfect" lean system instead of a flawed one we can improve The non-negotiables in Toyota Culture, including how Toyota responds when a purchasing manager wants to shut down a US supplier to save thirty percent "Don't skip hats" - what Jeff learned at the UK plant about roles, authority, and going to the gemba to observe rather than solve The difference between the five whys and the five whos, and why the goal isn't the deepest root cause but a controllable one Read the full post with quotes and more at https://leanblog.org/545

In this Show Up Fitness podcast, we break down the 7 most important NASM CPT topics including the OPT model, overhead squat assessment, planes of motion, muscle imbalances, behavior change, programming, and nutrition. Show Up Fitness has helped 10,000+ trainers pass NASM, ACE, and ISSA faster with quizzes, study guides, weekly calls, and real coaching. KEEP SHOWING UP![Most NASM CPT prep advice pushes you toward the same mistake: read the whole textbook, take random quizzes, and hope your anxiety does not spike on test day. We take the opposite approach. We narrow your attention to the high-impact concepts the NASM personal trainer exam leans on again and again, then show you how to recognize the patterns behind the questions so you can answer faster with more confidence. We start with the basics that buy you easy points: anatomy direction terms and planes of motion, plus simple exercise examples you can recall under pressure. From there we hit behavior change coaching and the stages of change, along with key terms like open kinetic chain versus closed kinetic chain and the roles of agonist, synergist, stabilizer, and antagonist. If you have ever felt like you “knew the material” but still missed questions, this is where the test language starts to make sense. Then we get into the meat: assessments, subjective versus objective information, and how NASM loves to test compensations through overactive and underactive muscle groups, especially with the overhead squat assessment. We also break down the NASM OPT model and acute variables, including the numbers that matter for tempo, reps, rest, and intensity, so you can stop guessing which phase a movement belongs to and start selecting the best answer consistently. If you want to pass the NASM CPT exam without wasting months on low-value studying, press play. Have you ever felt like you've done the work… cleared the trauma… moved through the pain… and yet somehow the same type of challenge keeps showing up again and again? Maybe it looks different each time — a different relationship, a different situation, a different conflict — but underneath it, there's a familiar feeling. In this powerful quick IQ episode, Brandy shares a key insight that can help explain why so many people on the spiritual or self-healing journey feel like life becomes a constant game of "Whac-A-Mole," where one problem gets handled only for another one to pop up somewhere else. The distinction is simple but profound: Sometimes people clear the problem… but they don't clear the deeper pattern. And when the pattern remains, it can continue showing up in new people, new circumstances, and new forms — even when someone has genuinely done a lot of inner work. In this episode, Brandy helps you look beneath the surface so you can begin identifying the deeper patterned way of feeling that may be keeping old struggles alive. She also shares why true transformation requires more than just revisiting the original hurt — it requires re-patterning the mind and creating new neural pathways at a deeper level. This episode is especially powerful for anyone who has ever thought: "I've already worked on this… so why is it still showing up?" Listen in to discover how going deeper can help you stop repeating the same emotional patterns and begin creating more lasting change in your life, healing, and relationships. And as always, please be kind to yourself. This isn't about judgment — it's about understanding the mind in a deeper way so real transformation becomes possible. Do you want to see proof of the power of the mind in a medical journal? Here's a demonstration of Brandy Gillmore working with volunteers under medical equipment, as featured in a medical journal.   Free Resources and Frequently Asked Questions & Resources Q: How can I heal myself from chronic pain or illness?

About this episode:Today's guest is Erin Rogers, Founder of ERA Collective, Executive Coach, and Leadership Development Partner. In our conversation Erin offers valuable insights into:Motherhood - How becoming a mother made her a better leader, grounded in what matters, more emotionally intelligent, and ultimately led to her pivot into coaching. The mentor who saw her before she saw herself - she shares the Pink Hair story and the lesson of not waiting for permission.Leading through crisis - what her daughter's cancer journey taught her about presence, priorities, and refusing to wait for 'someday.'The power of being seen, and of not hiding.Erin's leadership lessons:Make sure that you really see the people around you. Keep noticing. Name what you see in them. You might be the one who shifts everything. And don't wait - the window isn't guaranteed.Crisis Clarifies. You learn what actually matters - and you stop performing leadership and start living it.One moment of being seen can change everything. That's what psychological safety actually looks like. It's not a policy. It's a moment.Erin's three key encouragements to leaders:Stop waiting for permission. The mentor who asked about my pink hair wasn't giving me permission - she was showing me I didn't need it. And I almost waited too long.See the people around you - even when they're hiding. Ask how they are doing. One question gave me permission to stop shrinking and start helping others.Your next era can be your greatest era - if you're present, listening to the signals, and learning through your experiences. The things I've struggled with most - motherhood, menopause, my daughter's illness - are now the things I use to support other leaders. Nothing is wasted if you're paying attention.About Erin:Erin Rogers is the Founder of ERA Collective, an executive coaching and leadership development consultancy helping leaders show up with intention, build visibility, and navigate the messy middle of professional growth. Running is usually a solo sport, but community is the one thing that will keep you more consistent than any training plan ever could.Heads up: the wrong edit got published. This was originally a bigger convo for my other company (Pod Paste: Our production/media for brands) So the questions got mixed up. YouTube won't let me swap the file, so we trimmed the off-topic parts instead. Apologies if you caught the messy version.Running may look like a solo sport, but this episode shows why doing everything alone is not always the best way to improve. You'll learn how the right community can turn random workouts into a routine, make hard days easier, and create accountability when motivation fades. It also explains why people return to run clubs, races, and brands again and again. Whether you run alone or with others, these lessons can help you enjoy training more, stay consistent longer, and keep making progress over time.Key TakeawaysConsistency doesn't come from the perfect training plan; it comes from having people who expect you to show up. A group creates accountability that solo running just can't match. Most fitness brands fail because they try to sell a product instead of building a relationship. People want real connections and experiences, not just another advertisement in their feed.Chasing a fast time matters much less than enjoying the process of getting there. Longevity in this sport depends on how the run feels and who is there to share it.Timestamps[00:04] Why Running Alone Still Works[00:13] Find People Who Help You Keep Going[01:22] How to Build a Run Club Audience Online[02:00] Build More Than a Run, Build Friendships[03:15] Keep Showing Up, Consistency Helps a Community Grow Strong[03:58] Use This to Keep Up With Your Run Club[05:10] Why Most Brands Are Failing at Building an Online Community[08:07] What Makes People Return to Races and Clubs[10:55] What Brands Are Missing When It Comes to Building a Run Community[15:49] Why Trust and Shared Values Matter[19:04] Great Experiences Are Built Through Small Details[21:25] Should Marathons Ban Music and Cameras?Links & Learnings

“Send Coach John a message”I found this powerful and perfect reminder in a post from Mark Hickie (@MPHickie) where he gives a little introduction:  “Anyone else feel this …. Life's been a little strange lately—a mix of blessings, lessons, and confusion. Some days I'm grateful, some days just tired… but I keep showing up and trusting it's all aligning.”  The post that he shared with his thoughts was this: “Life's been a little strange lately …. A mix of blessings, lessons and moments that don't quite make sense yet.  Some days I feel deeply grateful, other days I'm just tired, and sometimes I'm simply trying to understand it all.  But even when it feels heavy, I keep showing up.  I keep moving with trust.  Deep down I know that things are aligning for me, even if I can't fully see it yet.  I'm learning to stop questioning the timing, and instead grow through what I don't understand.”  This was something that of course got my attention because I feel that parts of this is what I feel and see going on around me. Lot's of things going on in life and I'm trying to simplify them to fit what I want my life to be. Life does feel heavy at times and I'm reminding myself to just keep showing up, put in the work for the things I think are important and just keep believing in myself, my wife, my family & loved ones and keep being the best version of myself that I can be. The episode explains how pole dancers can get stronger using progressive overload, defined as gradually increasing training stress so the body adapts during rest and the same demands become easier over time. It outlines adaptation timelines: neurological and cardiovascular changes can occur quickly (sometimes within a session for neuro drills), noticeable strength gains typically appear after about 3–6 weeks, connective tissue (tendons/ligaments) adapts around the 3-month mark, and bone density changes occur closer to 6 months. Rosy emphasizes easing back into training—especially after a break or postpartum—avoiding self-punishment, and prioritizing rest because adaptation happens during recovery. It describes ways to increase load for pole and bodyweight training: increase training frequency while keeping at least 1–2 rest days per week, increase repetitions, use time-based conditioning like a “pole treadmill” (repeated climbs/descents for time), increase resistance via weights/bands or by selecting harder bodyweight progressions, and use isometrics by holding longer or increasing tension. It notes that muscle damage is not necessarily required for positive adaptation and references Felipe Damas' work (primarily in hypertrophy research), while clarifying the focus is strength training rather than bodybuilding. The episode also explains that the body responds to chronic life stress similarly to training stress, which can hinder strength gains, and encourages stress reduction and enjoyable movement.Citations:SELYE H. In this powerful compilation of The Burn Podcast, Ben Newman brings together two deeply moving conversations that center on faith, perseverance, and the meaning we assign to adversity. First, Ben finally sits down with Inky Johnson, a conversation years in the making. Inky shares how a career-ending injury became the foundation for a life of purpose, leadership, and impact. He breaks down why behavior always precedes belief, how humility fuels true discipline, and why faith—not circumstance—is the anchor that allows you to endure life's hardest moments. This is not a story about football; it's about choosing to give suffering meaning and refusing to waste the lessons adversity brings. Then, Ben is joined by mortgage-industry leader, coach, and author J. J. Mazzo, who opens up about the messy middle—imposter syndrome, financial pressure, family leadership, and faith—while unpacking the principles behind his book Perseverance Principles. J. J. shares how transparency, grace, and standards helped him rebuild during seasons of shame and uncertainty, and why leading at home is the ultimate test of character. From donating his book proceeds to charity to building a mission-driven coaching company, J. J.'s story is a reminder that perseverance isn't just about surviving—it's about serving, growing, and choosing light when darkness feels overwhelming. Together, these conversations deliver a clear message: when faith anchors discipline and purpose fuels action, perseverance becomes possible—no matter how heavy the moment feels.************************************Connect with Inky Johnson:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/inkyjohnsonmotivate/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/inkyjohnsonWebsite: https://www.inkyjohnson.com/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@InkyDJohnson************************************Connect with J.J. Consistency is the foundation of strength training—but it's also the hardest part. In the first episode of the C.L.A.R.A. series, Andrew and Niki break down why strength training consistency matters more than motivation, outcomes, or perfect programming. If you've ever struggled to stick with lifting, lost momentum after early progress, or felt discouraged by slow results, this episode explains why that's normal—and how to stay in the process anyway. C.L.A.R.A. stands for Consistency, Longevity, Accountability, Resilience, and Adaptability. These five principles form the mental framework for lifelong strength, health, and sustainable training. This episode focuses on consistency because everything else flows from it. You'll hear why outcomes like PRs and physique changes can become distractions, how discomfort and delayed feedback sabotage consistency, and why buy-in matters more than motivation. The conversation also explores common obstacles to staying consistent with strength training, including soreness, injury, decision fatigue, limiting beliefs, and the mental load of trying to do everything "right." This episode kicks off a new series designed to help lifters think beyond the barbell and build strength that lasts for decades—not just months.
