By Thomas Coulter - We are instructed to be an overcomer – a battle we must win, with Jesus providing an example of a lifelong commitment to this victory we must attain. What do the Scriptures prescribe for our victory?
[Judges 6:11-12] Then the angel of the Lord came and sat beneath the great tree at Ophrah, which belonged to Joash of the clan of Abiezer. Gideon son of Joash was threshing wheat at the bottom of a winepress to hide the grain from the Midianites. [12] The angel of the Lord appeared to him and said, “Mighty hero, the Lord is with you!” God doesn't call us who we are, he calls us who we will ______________. [Judges 6:14] Then the Lord turned to him and said, “Go with the strength you have, and rescue Israel from the Midianites. I am sending you!” You have more _________________ than you think you have. [Judges 6:15-16] “But Lord,” Gideon replied, “how can I rescue Israel? My clan is the weakest in the whole tribe of Manasseh, and I am the least in my entire family!” [16] The Lord said to him, “I will be with you. And you will destroy the Midianites as if you were fighting against one man.” Gideon didn't realize that God was looking for someone ____________. [1 Corinthians 1:26-29] CSB Brothers and sisters, consider your calling: Not many were wise from a human perspective, not many powerful, not many of noble birth. [27] Instead, God has chosen what is foolish in the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen what is weak in the world to shame the strong. [28] God has chosen what is insignificant and despised in the world—what is viewed as nothing—to bring to nothing what is viewed as something, [29] so that no one may boast in his presence. God may ask you to do something that seems _____________. [Judges 7:19-22] It was just after midnight, after the changing of the guard, when Gideon and the 100 men with him reached the edge of the Midianite camp. Suddenly, they blew the rams' horns and broke their clay jars. [20] Then all three groups blew their horns and broke their jars. They held the blazing torches in their left hands and the horns in their right hands, and they all shouted, “A sword for the Lord and for Gideon!” [21] Each man stood at his position around the camp and watched as all the Midianites rushed around in a panic, shouting as they ran to escape. [22] When the 300 Israelites blew their rams' horns, the Lord caused the warriors in the camp to fight against each other with their swords. It doesn't take a whole lot of ___________ to defeat the ______________. God specializes in ________________ when the odds are against you. [1 Kings 19:1-3a] When Ahab got home, he told Jezebel everything Elijah had done, including the way he had killed all the prophets of Baal. [2] So Jezebel sent this message to Elijah: “May the gods strike me and even kill me if by this time tomorrow I have not killed you just as you killed them.” [3] Elijah was afraid and fled for his life. Depression is often triggered by ___________________ that goes unchecked. Depression comes when we start listening to our ___________________. Depression comes when we allow ___________ to direct us. [1 Kings 19:3b-4a] He went to Beersheba, a town in Judah, and he left his servant there. [4] Then he went on alone into the wilderness, traveling all day. Depression escalates when we __________________. [1 Kings 19:4b-8] He sat down under a solitary broom tree and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life, for I am no better than my ancestors who have already died.” [5] Then he lay down and slept under the broom tree. [7] Then the angel of the Lord came again and touched him and said, “Get up and eat some more, or the journey ahead will be too much for you.” [8] So he got up and ate and drank, and the food gave him enough strength to travel forty days and forty nights to Mount Sinai, the mountain of God. But the Lord said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” [10] Elijah replied, “I have zealously served the Lord God Almighty. Welcome back to Build Your Bible Habit, where you can listen to a chapter of Proverbs in under five minutes. Reading along as you listen is also a great habit. The Word of God is instructional, and the book of Proverbs is practical enough to apply to everyday situations. Here's an example: Suppose a friend comes to you and asks what you think of taking medication for depression. Do you just jump in and answer according to your personal opinion, or do you ask enough questions to understand the "why" behind the problem? When we attempt to help people solve surface issues rather than root problems, we are not helping. Proverbs 18: 13 is a great reminder verse, guiding us to ask more questions rather than just blurting out an opinion: "He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him." (Proverbs 18:13) God makes life make sense. [Mark 5.25 KJV] And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years. Sometimes your issue becomes so big that it consumes your ________________. [Mark 5.26] She had suffered a great deal from many doctors, and over the years she had spent everything she had to pay them, but she had gotten no better. In fact, she had gotten worse. Eventually your issue can _______________ you. There are some issues in life that you _____________ ______________ on your own. Faith starts at the beginning of _______________ ___________________. [Mark 5.27-34] She had heard about Jesus, so she came up behind him through the crowd and touched his robe. [28] For she thought to herself, “If I can just touch his robe, I will be healed.” [29] Immediately the bleeding stopped, and she could feel in her body that she had been healed of her terrible condition. [30] Jesus realized at once that healing power had gone out from him, so he turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my robe?” [31] His disciples said to him, “Look at this crowd pressing around you. How can you ask, ‘Who touched me?'” [32] But he kept on looking around to see who had done it. [33] Then the frightened woman, trembling at the realization of what had happened to her, came and fell to her knees in front of him and told him what she had done. [34] And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace. Your suffering is over.” My ____________ plus Jesus' _____________ can make a miracle. You're not going to get the _____________ you need if you don't bring it to Jesus. Everyone gets a turn in the rotation of painful situations, but there are varying degrees of trouble, big and small. When we haven't been through the fire, we may have a hard time understanding the painful burns of extreme loss. When the trouble is not in our lives, it takes intentional effort to have compassion, empathy, and true concern. Welcome back to Build Your Bible Habit, where you can listen to a daily chapter of Proverbs in about five minutes. The seventh chapter of Proverbs is a hard one. If you've developed the habit of reading or listening to a daily Proverb, you already know what's coming: the chapter about "the strange woman." The word "strange" in this context refers to a prostitute or a harlot. It also carries the meaning "to commit adultery." The "strange woman" is immoral and enticing. This chapter should be read slowly, and yet it may be painful reading. Have you ever wondered how the "strange woman" ended up on that path of humiliation and destruction? And what about the man who accepted the invitation? They were both selfish. Taking advantage of people to satisfy the flesh never ends well. Here's how chapter seven closes: "For she hath cast down many wounded: yea, many strong men have been slain by her. Her house is the way to hell, going down to the chambers of death."
