Time for some NYHC (New York Hardcore for the uneducated!), as we shine the light on the doiscography of the pugilistic Cro-Mags. An interesting listen this one considering the evolution the band's sound throughout their six full length releases. And no, I'm not going to get into the band's inner conflicts ... we're here to focus on music, dammit!! From New York city here's some street justice! Don't miss a very special crossover episode as Chris T. introduces his new Newsletter & Podcast documenting the process behind writing his upcoming book NIHILISTIC: How a hardcore band saved my life… then nearly killed me. “A memoir with guitar,” NIHILISTIC is a coming-of-age cautionary tale following two forlorn, friendless, dead-end suburban “Lawn Guyland” fat kids who form a band and end up on the legendary stages of the NYHC (New York Hardcore) scene. We see how each interpret the lessons of their particular moment and the way success in their milieu warps their friendship until one tries to murder the other. This special Aerial View contains the first installment of NIHILISTIC Pod, recorded July 4th on my stoop as people streamed up the block in an attempt to see Macy's fireworks. It includes an update on the progress of the NIHILISTIC book and – bonus – a recording of an old phone call with Mike from the Nihilistics, who denies threatening my life. Then I'm at the Meadowlands Flea talking about Saturday's Nihilistics show in Hazlet, NJ. Listen for the second episode of NIHILISTIC Pod documenting the trip Keith Hartel and I took to Bulletproof Music Studios to see The Nihilistics on a bill with Fear Gods. What a strange damn night (I write all about it for today's installment of the NIHILISTIC Newsletter). Please subscribe to the NIHILISTIC Newsletter & Pod at nihilisticbook.com and spread the word to anyone else you think might be interested. In our penultimate episode of 2021, Dario speaks to Frank Pavich the director of Jodorowsky's Dune and NYHC. With all the publicity and discussion around Denis Villeneuve's blockbuster interpretation of Frank Herbert's influential Sci-Fi novel, it was fantastic to go back to the first, incredibly imaginative but ultimately failed attempt to bring the book to the screen from one of cinema's singular visionaries: Alejandro Jodorowsky. Frank talks about his first contact with Jodorowsky, his uncompromising attitude to the production scope and casting, and his assembling of a team of designers and artists including Kurt Geiger, whose drawings Pavich uses to great effect in the documentary and which would go on to define mainstream sci-fi for decades to come. Frank also talks about NYHC (New York Hardcore) his directorial debut, putting the making of the film into the context of his fascinating idiosyncratic film education, and how the film was made in that liminal period between the analog and digital eras of filmmaking. You can watch it online for free here. Also, Neil reviews serval blu-ray releases including Champion directed by Mark Robson and starring Kirk Douglas, Sergio Corbucci's The Great Silence (both from Masters of Cinema), Jean Pierre Melville's Enfant Terrible (BFI), Alistair Mcleland's music film on Saint Etienne, I've Been Trying to Tell You. ——— You can listen to The Cinematologists for free, wherever you listen to podcasts: click here to follow.
