This week I'm joined by Justin Greaves and Belinda Kordic to discuss the making of the latest Crippled Black Phoenix offering, Sceaduhelm. We dive deep into the album's influences and the inspiration behind many of its tracks. Along the way, we also explore Justin and Belinda's individual musical journeys — from Justin growing up around his father's record store, which helped shape his remarkably broad musical palette, to Belinda's evolution from extreme metal screamer into one of the most stirring and distinctive vocalists in heavy music today. On the Weekly News Rant, Sheriff Mike Scondotto returns by popular demand to help round up the latest singles for judgment and mull over the metal issues of the day. We give our first impressions of new tracks by Anthrax, Madball, Forsmán and others, while also answering some of your questions. PLUS: two servings of Unsanctioned Filth courtesy of Christbane with a track from their upcoming record, Antichrist, alongside the bleak death metal stylings of UK extremists Aeffect.    Featured Bands Crippled Black Phoenix: https://crippledblackphoenixsom.bandcamp.com/   Christbane: https://christbane.bandcamp.com/  Aeffect:  https://aeffect.bandcamp.com/  Danzig: https://danzigsingselvis.bandcamp.com/    Visit intothenecrosphere.com for playlists and more. Scratch the surface, serve a purpose! I avsnitt 214 avverkar vi New York Hardcore. Full episode on our Patreon. Vinnie Stigma is a foundational figure in the hardcore punk scene and the longtime guitarist of Agnostic Front; a band that helped define the New York hardcore sound. Their music touches on the realities of an early New York, social change and independent thought. Stigma's guitar work was central to releases like United Blood and Victim in Pain, albums that became cornerstones of the hardcore genre. Stigma was involved with Madball, a band fronted by Roger Miret's younger half-brother, Freddy Madball. He also launched a solo project under the name Stigma, releasing albums such as New York Blood and For Love and Glory. In 2024, Stigma published his autobiography, The Most Interesting Man in the World. The book delves into his upbringing in Little Italy, his experiences in the hardcore scene, and his passions outside of music, including cooking, acting, and martial arts. Stigma remains active in the music scene, performing with Agnostic Front and maintaining a strong presence in the NYHC community. http://patreon.com/livingproofnewyorkhttp://livingproofnewyork.com

In this explosive episode of *The Metal Maniacs Podcast*, hosts Jay Ingersoll and Modd are joined by two heavy hitters from the scene: Luke Forton, the vocalist of **Reinventing Yesterday**, and Jeremy McClarey, the frontman of **Snake Out**. Together, they introduce Jay and Modd to the world of **hardcore**, diving deep into the extreme metal subgenre that has shaped everything from metal to punk and beyond. **Hardcore 101: The Roots and Rivalries** What comes to mind when you think of "metal"? Heavy riffs, brutal breakdowns, and epic solos? Now, what about "hardcore"? Luke and Jeremy help us explore the defining characteristics of hardcore as a genre, its connection to punk, and how it differs—and sometimes overlaps—with metal. We dig into the age-old debates: *Why can't we all just get along?* **The Evolution: From Punk to Metal** Hardcore's journey through music history is rich with influence. From its roots in 1980s punk with bands like **Black Flag**, **Minor Threat**, and **Bad Brains**, hardcore began blending into the metal world, influencing a wide range of extreme genres. We discuss how crossover thrash emerged, with bands like **Slayer**, **Metallica**, and **Anthrax** adopting hardcore and punk influences to shape the sound of thrash metal in the 80s. As hardcore evolved, it birthed new subgenres like **metallic hardcore** in the late 80s and 90s. Bands such as **Cro-Mags**, **Biohazard**, **Integrity**, **Madball**, and **Hatebreed** became central figures in the hardcore scene, mixing thrash, hardcore, and metal to create a new wave of aggressive, high-energy music. **The Blurring Lines of Metalcore** The line between hardcore and metalcore has always been fuzzy. As metalcore rose in popularity, many fans and critics argued about what truly defines the genre. **Proto-Deathcore and Beyond** As hardcore and metalcore evolved, so did the more extreme subgenres. **Deathcore** emerged as a brutal hybrid of death metal and hardcore, and while it's often debated whether it retains any hardcore essence, the influence of hardcore can still be traced in bands like **The Acacia Strain**, **The Red Chord**, and **Bleeding Through**. However, hardcore's reach didn't stop with metalcore or deathcore—it also inspired the rise of extreme bands in various niches of the underground scene. Luke and Jeremy give us their personal recommendations of modern hardcore bands, such as **Drain**, **Ingrown**, **Knocked Loose**, and **Candy**, discussing how they continue to carry the torch for hardcore with fresh, innovative sounds. **The Sound of Hardcore Today** In the second half of the episode, we dive into the current state of hardcore, where bands like **Twitching Tongues**, **God's Hate**, **Gates to Hell**, and **Fuming Mouth** have brought the genre to new heights. Whether it's the blistering speed of **Enforced** or the pummeling grooves of **Pain of Truth**, hardcore continues to push the boundaries of aggression, intensity, and emotion. Jay and Modd get to react to snippets of some of these bands' latest tracks, which leads to some fascinating conversations about the evolving sounds of hardcore and how the genre is both changing and staying true to its roots. The energy and raw emotion in these tracks are undeniable, and you'll hear firsthand the passion both our guests and hosts bring to the discussion. This episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in the deep roots of extreme music. Whether you're a seasoned hardcore fan or new to the scene, Luke and Jeremy break down everything you need to know about the genre's evolution, its influence on modern metal, and how it's still thriving today. So, tune in and get ready for an unforgettable ride through the world of hardcore! **Don't forget to subscribe** to *The Metal Maniacs Presents: The Last Week on Earth*, where we bring you all the latest and greatest in metal, hardcore, and beyond! Send us a textGary Meskil is the founding member and driving force behind Pro-Pain, a prominent hardcore metal band that emerged in the early 1990s. Born in New York City, Meskil's early exposure to the thriving punk and hardcore scenes of the 1980s heavily influenced his musical direction. Prior to forming Pro-Pain, Meskil was a bassist for the hardcore band Crumbsuckers, which laid the foundation for his future endeavors in the heavy music genre. In 1991, Meskil founded Pro-Pain with the intention of creating a band that combined the aggression and intensity of hardcore punk with the heavy riffing and technical proficiency of metal. Pro-Pain's debut album, Foul Taste of Freedom, released in 1992, was a critical and commercial success within the underground music scene. The album's raw energy, socially conscious lyrics, and Meskil's powerful vocal delivery set the tone for the band's future releases.Pro-Pain quickly gained a reputation for their relentless touring schedule and ferocious live performances. Meskil's leadership and vision were central to the band's success, guiding them through numerous lineup changes while maintaining their core sound and message. The band's music often tackles themes of political and social issues, personal struggles, and resilience, resonating deeply with fans who appreciate the blend of hardcore urgency and metal precision.Over the years, Pro-Pain released a series of influential albums, including The Truth Hurts (1994), Contents Under Pressure (1996), and Act of God (1999). Each release showcased Meskil's growth as a songwriter and his ability to adapt to the evolving landscape of heavy music. The band's sound incorporated elements of groove metal, thrash, and even hints of melodic death metal, ensuring their relevance in a genre known for its rapid shifts and trends.Despite the challenges faced by many bands in maintaining longevity, Pro-Pain has remained a consistent force in the metal and hardcore scenes. Meskil's dedication to his craft and his refusal to compromise the band's integrity have earned Pro-Pain a loyal and passionate fanbase worldwide. The band's relentless work ethic and commitment to their message have solidified their place as one of the enduring acts in heavy music. In 2017, Meskil faced a significant personal challenge when he was brutally attacked and robbed in Belgium while on tour. The incident left him with serious injuries, but his resilience and determination shone through as he recovered and returned to the stage. This episode further highlighted Meskil's unwavering dedication to Pro-Pain and his indomitable spirit.Gary Meskil's impact on the metal and hardcore scenes through Pro-Pain iwww.BetterHelp.com/TheBarnhttp://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn http://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarnThis episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and brought to you as always by The Barn Media Group. The guys in @overthrow_lihc were all friends before starting the band, and discovered hardcore together while they were in high school. We hear about their experience playing shows in the New York area and how the band came to be affiliated with Triple Crown Records. The conversation shifts to discuss growing older while still maintaining connections to the hardcore music community, how hardcore has provided an outlet for grief over the loss of friends and family, and how hardcore influenced them as fathers. We hear about the new songs Overthrow has recently recorded, two of which can be found on the popular music streaming platforms, and the forthcoming record due out this fall. Continuing our occasional trips into the hip hop genre, Greg interviews MC Lars on episode 162. Most people will probably know MC Lars from his songs that went viral (Download this Song & Hipster Girl). For a hip hop artist, MC Lars is well versed in punk and hardcore; he name drops Madball and Minor Threat on tracks and features punk vocalists from Chocking Victim and the Donnas on others. Greg and Lars discuss his introduction to punk rock, how his creative process differs on solo track versus collaborations, and how punk rock, DIY ethics has shaped his hip hop career. We had the pleasure of interviewing Bokassa over Zoom video!Over ten songs and 30 minutes, Bokassa is as diverse as ever on their new full length “All Out of Dreams”. The power trio offers everything from riffy stoner metal in "Bradford Death Squadron", almost progressive skatepunk in "No More Good Days", 45 seconds of metallic hardcore in "Everyone Fails In The End" to laid-back Izzy Stradlin bottle neck-riffing on the desert rocker “Gung Ho”. Not to mention the hooky and anthemic title track. In other words, the band has not become less fond of mixing genres over the years! In an age where everything sounds the same, it has also always been important to Bokassa that each record is sonically different from the previous one. Therefore, they have been very conscious of how this record should sound. Where, for example, the debut "Divide & Conquer" had a noisy soundscape and 2021's "Molotov Rocktail" had a more playful and bigger rock sound, "All Out Of Dreams" has a slightly more raw metallic sound. This can clearly be seen in the conscious choice to go for a snare drum sound that brings to mind 90s metal, rock and punk ala Clutch, Helmet, Therapy? Or The Vandals' "Live Fast Diarrhea”, too name a few.The album was recorded, mixed and mastered by Tue Madsen (Meshuggah, BabyMetal, Madball, Sick Of It All, The Haunted) in Antfarm Studio in Denmark in June 2022. The band also has guest artists for the first time, in the form of Lou Koller from the NYHC legends Sick Of It All and Aaron Beam from the stoner rockers Red Fang.We want to hear from you! Episode 147 Matt Henderson -Agnostic Front, Madball and now H20. Matt Henderson would easily be in the hardcore hall of fame for all the work he put into the bands and the movement over the last 40 years. We had a deep dive into the Minneapolis/St Paul hc scene of the 1980s and then walked our way up to about Dynamo 1995. Hopefully we get a part 2 in and we can talk more about what happens next and all the production stuff he would eventually get involved with and much more. In the last 1000 days give or take, Code Orange managed to continue to press the boundaries of the music industry and themselves to new heights. Their latest efforts have featured Billy Corgan and showcased both a growth mindset in their writing and refinement in their ability to drop some heavy riffs into a song.
