We've said it before, but the 90s were the peak time for "chick"-fronted alternative rock bands. There were so many good ones and among them was that dog. fronted by this week's guest, Anna Waronker. They only managed three albums, but they made a great impression. Anna put out a couple solo albums, but she also pivoted to making music for TV which she's done successfully for a while. She currently does the music for Yellowjackets with musical partner Craig Wedren of fellow 90s survivors Shudder to Think. We discuss her whole career, her legendary dad Lenny (who was just accepted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame), her famous friends like Maya Rudolph and Jack Black, her husband Steve McDonald of the band Redd Kross (she did the music for the recent documentary on the band which is now available to rent at the link below), and a ton more. She's the best!  www.reddkrossfilm.com/watch www.patreon.com/c/thehustlepod

TV writer & Record Collector Andrew Reich discusses his decade-long journey creating a documentary about Los Angeles music legends Redd Kross and the McDonald brothers' musical partnership. Topics Include: How Andrew made the leap from TV writing to filmmaking. Wife's suggestion sparked the documentary idea. Heard Steve McDonald's abduction story on a podcast. TV writing different from documentary making - can't control narrative. Documentary structure doesn't follow traditional storytelling beats. Director learned new storytelling techniques through editing. Documentary required extensive collaboration with editor Aaron Elders. Filming spanned approximately 10 years (2015-2025). Jeff McDonald's hairstyle changed dramatically throughout filming. Andrew discovered Redd Kross through "Teen Babes from Monsanto" album. Became fan at 13, requesting records for radio station. Redd Kross connects diverse bands from Black Flag to Go-Go's. Director considers Redd Kross one of Los Angeles' greatest bands. Documentary coincided with band's current renaissance and revival. Making the movie spurred new Redd Kross creative activity. Band created "Born Innocent" song specifically for the film. Initial filming was sporadic until Kickstarter provided funding. Created oral history structure from interview transcripts. Collected extensive archival material throughout production process. Film deliberately kept under 90 minutes for accessibility. Cut "Desperate Teenage Love Dolls" section despite importance. Film focuses on brothers' relationship rather than complete history. Steve's abduction possibly influenced band's fantasy/dress-up aesthetic. Andrew admires documentaries like "Anvil" and "Dig." Avoids rock critics in documentaries, preferring eyewitness accounts. Parents' interview about abduction was emotionally challenging. Wishes he had footage of certain legendary shows. New photographs emerged after film completion for eventual Blu-ray. Describes record collecting journey starting in New Jersey. Now focuses on first pressings of albums he loves. Sold unnecessary records to fund first pressing purchases. Australian bands currently producing best new punk music. Prefers seeing smaller shows over expensive arena concerts. Purchased rare Redd Kross/White Flag split single. Redd Kross, a band overdue for massive appreciation, is having a moment. There's a new page-turner of a memoir, Now You're One of Us, co-written by brother bandmates Jeff and Steven McDonald with Dan Epstein. Their narrative rocks to life in Andrew Reich's new documentary, Born Innocent: The Redd Kross Story. The movie, in turn, inspired the 2024 double album Redd Kross, a candy-colored collection of irresistible hooks, massive riffs and sharp reflections, all wrapped in a cover that one brother thought shouldn't be red. Steven McDonald, the younger bass-playing brother, opens up here about what it's been like to work with Jeff (a previous Caropop guest) since the age of 11, his abduction at age 13, his increased songwriting role in Redd Kross, how he juggles his many Redd Kross duties with playing in the Melvins and other bands, what Kurt Cobain said to tick him off and why he takes Redd Kross's commercial struggles personally.

Like it or not, this is the year of Redd Kross! This underappreciated power pop band is coming at you with an assault of good stuff in 2024. They have an incredible new self-titled album, a memoir called Now You're One of Us, and a fantastic new documentary called Born Innocent: The Redd Kross Story. Jeff and Steven McDonald started out as pre-teens in the hardcore scene in Southern California, but matured into one of the great, if unsung, bands of the 80s and 90s with albums like 1990's Third Eye and 1993's epic Phaseshifter. As is so often the case, mainstream success never came knocking, but the band has carried on for decades consistently releasing great music. Steven joins us this week with the film's director Andrew Reich to discuss the whole career, being kidnapped at 12 (crazy story), how to deal with success not happening, and tons more. If you don't know Redd Kross, now's the time to get involved!  www.reddkross.com www.reddkrossfilm.com www.patreon.com/c/thehustlepod

On Friday, December 6th, WASTOIDS is hosting our first-ever movie screening at Hello Lincoln—our HQ and also home to Hello Merch & Hello Screenprinting. We're beyond excited to screen the first Phoenix showing of Born Innocent: The Redd Kross Story. Directed by Andrew Reich, the film tells the story of brothers Jeff and Steven McDonald, who founded Redd Kross as teenagers in the Southern California of the 1970s. Directed by Andrew Reich, this documentary makes the case that RK is the seminal West Coast band of the last half century, a “secret handshake” exchanged between punk, college rock, grunge, glam, power pop, metal, and indie rock fans.Packed with archival footage, interviews with the McDonalds, and thoughts and stories from members of Pearl Jam, Sonic Youth, The Bangles, Dinosaur Jr, The Go-Go's, Soundgarden, Black Flag, and many more, the movie shows why people like Thurston Moore called Redd Kross "one of the most important bands in America." Come hang out with us to close out the year of Redd Kross, 2024, which has also seen a brand new self-titled Redd Kross album—you can get your copy from In the Red Records—and Now You're One of Us: The Incredible Story of Redd Kross, a book written with Dan Epstein. Come hang out and eat popcorn with us. GET YOUR TICKETS HERE To get your ready for the show, you're about to hear a talk we taped August 11th at the Valley Bar. It's WASTOIDS chief Sam Means in conversation with both Jeff and Steve—covering not only the band's history, takes on the hardcore scene, and Steve's work with Sam's band, The Format—but also, the saga of Tater Totz, the McDonalds' strange Beatles tribute. Call us anytime at 1-877-WASTOIDS. Andrew also shares his own personal rock and roll nightmare, which has something to do with The Grateful Dead.

Hawthorne, California's Redd Kross have been defying stylistic scene conventions since their pre-teen days opening for the likes of Black Flag, creating a body of work over the span of four decades! Liberally dipping into the cultural zeitgeist to borrow from The Beatles, Kiss, glam, punk, bubbelgum and a myriad of high-and-lowbrow signposts, the band as of recent seen a flurry of activity including a documentary Born Innocent: The Redd Kross Story, a new, self-titled double opus on In The Red Records, and now a forthcoming book chronicling their wild ride called Now You're One Of Us: The Incredible Story of Redd Kross out this fall.
