Today's poem shows us a teacher wrestling with the notion of “graduation.” Happy reading.Bill Knott was born on February 17, 1940, in Carson City, Michigan. When he was seven years old, his mother died in childbirth, and his father passed away three years later. He grew up in an orphanage in Mooseheart, Illinois, and on an uncle's farm. In the late 1950s, he joined the U.S. Army and, after serving his full enlistment, was honorably discharged in 1960.In the early 1960s, Knott moved to Chicago, where he worked as a hospital orderly. There, he became involved in the poetry scene and worked with John Logan, Paul Carroll, Charles Simic, and other poets. He published his first book, The Naomi Poems, Book One: Corpse and Beans (Big Table, 1968), under the pseudonym Saint Geraurd in 1968. He also published Nights of Naomi (Barn Dream Press, 1971) and Auto-necrophilia (Big Table, 1971) under the same name.Knott went on to publish several poetry collections under his own name, including I Am Flying into Myself: Selected Poems, 1960–2014 (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2017), edited by Thomas Lux; Laugh at the End of the World: Collected Comic Poems 1969–1999 (BOA Editions, 2000); Becos (Random House, 1983); and Love Poems to Myself (Barn Dream Press, 1974). He also self-published many books and posted all of his poems online, where they could be read for free.Of his work, Lux writes, “As dense as some of his poems can be, they rarely defeat comprehensibility. Some are so lucid and straightforward, they are like a punch in the gut, or one's first great kiss…. His intense focus on every syllable, and the sound of every syllable in relation to nearby sounds, is so skilled that the poems often seem casual: Art hides art.”Knott taught at Emerson College for over twenty-five years. He received the Iowa Poetry Prize, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, among other honors and awards. He died on March 12, 2014, in Bay City, Michigan.-bio via Academy of American Poets This is a public episode. The Trump regime built much of its identity–and certainly campaigned around–its hatred of LGBTQ Americans. Unfortunately, the success of that campaign again revealed just how much anti-queer bias there is in the American populace. And while there may be no populated nation in the world that is truly free of anti-queer bias, there are places that are better, are different, or that offer new perspectives. Alden Jones' work explores queer travel. Alden is an assistant professor at Emerson College and the author of the memoirs The Blind Masseuse and The Wanting Was a Wilderness and the story collection Unaccompanied Minors. Best American Travel Writing and other venues. She edited the new anthology of queer travel writing “Edge of the World” and he is here to discuss that work and the queer travel experience.

Franz Wright was born in Vienna, Austria and grew up in the Northwest, the Midwest, and California. He earned a BA from Oberlin College in 1977. His collections of poetry include The Beforelife (2001); God's Silence (2006); Walking to Martha's Vineyard, which won the Pulitzer Prize in 2004; Wheeling Motel (2009); Kindertotenwald (2011); and F (2013). In his precisely crafted, lyrical poems, Wright addresses the subjects of isolation, illness, spirituality, and gratitude. Of his work, he has commented, “I think ideally, I would like, in a poem, to operate by way of suggestion.”Critic Helen Vendler wrote in the New York Review of Books, “Wright's scale of experience, like Berryman's, runs from the homicidal to the ecstatic ... His best forms of or originality: deftness in patterning, startling metaphors, starkness of speech, compression of both pain and joy, and a stoic self-possession with the agonies and penalties of existence.” Langdon Hammer, in the New York Times Book Review, wrote of God's Silence: “In his best poems, Wright grasps at the ‘radiantly obvious thing' in short-lined short lyrics that turn and twist down the page. The urgency and calculated unsteadiness of the utterances, with their abrupt shifts of direction, jump-cuts and quips, mime the wounded openness of a speaker struggling to find faith.”Wright received a Whiting Fellowship, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. He translated poetry by Rainer Maria Rilke and Rene Char; in 2008 he and his wife, Elizabeth Oehlkers Wright, co-translated a collection by the Belarusian poet Valzhyna Mort, Factory of Tears. He taught at Emerson College and other universities, worked in mental health clinics, and volunteered at a center for grieving children. His father was the Pulitzer Prize–winning poet James Wright. He died in 2015. This is a public episode. If you'd like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit dailypoempod.substack.com/subscribe

Welcome to Season 10 of the Hoffman Podcast! We're glad to be back with you and a new season of conversations. Marissa and Raz Ingrasci Marissa Ingrasci and Raz Ingrasci, Hoffman Process teachers, join Drew for this deep dive into the many layers of spiritual lineage running through the Process, and their own journeys to becoming Process teachers. There's also a familial lineage, as Marissa is Raz's daughter. Raz and Marissa came to teach the Hoffman Process through the lens of theatre. For Raz, this meant studying classic Greek theater; for Marissa, it meant studying and living the art of acting. In this conversation, they share fascinating ways theatre, in its many forms, illuminates the Process's inner workings. Within the Hoffman Institute and the Process are layers of spiritual lineage. The spiritual lineage of teaching the Process is passed down as each new teacher takes their seat, teacher to teacher. Bob Hoffman passed the Process lineage down to Raz and Liza, Hoffman's CEO and President and Raz's wife when they established the Institute in the United States. Over recent years, Raz and Liza have been working to ensure the lineage continues. Raz and Marissa share a deeper understanding of the spiritual dimension in the design of the Hoffman Process. Marissa highlights the nature of the Hero's Journey and how the week of the Process is remarkably similar. Raz, who has studied multiple Eastern spiritual traditions, such as Buddhism and Hinduism, highlights how Bob Hoffman brought the Process into being in the West. We don't have to travel to distant lands to benefit from this spiritual lineage of the Hoffman Process. We hope you enjoy this deep, delightful conversation. More about Marissa Ingrasci: Marissa Ingrasci holds a B.A. from Emerson College. She received her coaching training through the ICF-approved, Academy of Leadership Coaching and is also a certified NLP (Neurolinguistic Programming) coach. Marissa did the Hoffman Process when she was 23 years old. Marissa says, “The Hoffman Process changed my relationship with me, quieting critical voices and allowing me greater access to my inner knowing and wisdom. In short – it gave me freedom! It's inspiring and a joy to walk alongside and support others doing this work.” More episodes with Marissa: • Ready to Step Into the Mystery More about Raz Ingrasci: Marissa, Raz, and Liza Ingrasci Raz Ingrasci graduated from UC Berkeley and has been an executive, consultant, and facilitator within the Human Potential Movement since 1972. He is also a Hoffman teacher and founded the Hoffman Institute Foundation in 1998. Raz took the Process in July 1989. From that experience, he had three major takeaways: “I knew my marriage would last; I could be a great dad to my young children, and I'd found work worthy of devoting my life to.” “The Hoffman Process is the most highly effective method for people to heal, discover their true nature, and live a more free, open, loving, and spontaneous life,” Raz shares. His passion for teaching the Hoffman Process is both professional and personal; it brings him into the depths of human experience where he learns at least as much as he teaches. Raz lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife of over 40 years, Liza. Dave Sampson is the Vice President of Cyber Risk & Strategy at Thrive. In his role, he heads Thrive's Consulting Practice, where he and his team of experts join forces with clients to deliver strategic guidance on a range of topics, including cybersecurity, IT operations, Cloud, Microsoft 365, compliance, disaster recovery planning, and more. Over the course of his extensive career, Dave has taken up various influential positions in the industry. He served as a Senior Consulting Technical Solution Manager at IBM, was Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at Itrica, founded and served as CEO of Cloud Provider USA, and held the position of Chief Technology Officer at ColoSpace. Dave holds an MBA from Northeastern University and a BS in Communication and Media Studies from Emerson College. He is a former elected official in his hometown of Sandwich, MA. In this episode… As the cyber threat landscape becomes more unpredictable, organizations often struggle with implementing and managing different security tools and ensuring systems communicate effectively to keep up with threats. Organizations can no longer afford to take a reactive approach. Without a clear strategy and proper proactive security measures, organizations face operational disruptions, increased vulnerability to attacks, and challenges in responding to security incidents. So, how can companies take a smarter, more proactive approach to cyber risk management? A proactive cybersecurity strategy isn't just about having the right tools — it's about integrating these tools effectively and ensuring visibility across systems to detect risk and prepare for worst-case scenarios. Companies like Thrive are making this process more efficient with their security platform that combines industry leading security tools, real-time monitoring, and AI-driven automation into a cohesive, managed solution that helps companies optimize operations and mitigate cyber risks. Yet, beyond the technology, companies also need to establish a disaster recovery plan, maintain transparency with third-party vendors, and perform privacy and security risk assessments to further enhance security and privacy measures and incident preparedness. In this episode of She Said Privacy/He Said Security, Jodi and Justin Daniels talk with Dave Sampson, VP of Cyber Risk & Strategy at Thrive, about the critical components of cyber risk management. Dave discusses the challenges of integrating security solutions, the lessons learned from the CrowdStrike incident, and how AI is both a threat and an advantage in cybersecurity. He shares insights on cybersecurity best practices and discusses the growing need for outsourcing cybersecurity expertise, the role of third-party risk management, and the importance of disaster recovery planning. Dave also offers practical tips for strengthening both personal and enterprise security, emphasizing the need for vigilance, adaptability, and a proactive security mindset.

In this episode Truth talks with Nate Homan, author of “Diamonds and Blood : An Infamous West African Warlord's Bay State Jailbreak.” Nate is a south Shore-born punk rock amateur boxer who graduated from Emerson College and has written for the Boston Phoenix, Metro Boston/NYC/ Philly, Front Page Detectives, DigBoston, and the Boston Institute for Nonprofit Journalism. The two discuss the plight of Charles Taylor – and his rise from college campus radical to mass-murdering megalomaniac. This began the night he slipped out of the Plymouth House of Correction in Plymouth, MA and made his way across the Atlantic Ocean to his homeland of Liberia, and he led a brutal coup d'etat in 1989. In 1991, Charles Taylor bankrolled a ruthless rebel army in Sierra Leone known for the abundance of child soldiers who hacked the arms off of enemies and innocent civilians alike. By conquering the mountains along the Liberian border, Charles Taylor hijacked the international diamond trade for nearly 15 years. After a bogus election in 1997, Charles Taylor became the 21st Commander in Chief of theRepublic of Liberia. Perched on a throne of blood, Charles Taylor stacked fortunes in Swiss bank accounts. He broke bread with world leaders, Fortune 500 executives, mercenaries, mass murderers, gem trading jihadis, and big time American televangelists. At the end of his reign, Charles Taylor was convicted of international war crimes in 2012. Joe gives "Breezy With No Filter" listeners an idea of what it is like having a dream and passion for the art of film/theatrics and going for it and actually taking home exceptional achievements & regognitions to his new home in LA. I can look at a pile of rocks and instantly find that one heart rock. It's a thing! I guess I am the heart rock whisperer! -Ellen Thayer When she was about 12 years old, Ellen Thayer climbed atop a rock in her backyard to marvel at the clouds. Little did she know that later in life, her professional life would involve both weather AND rocks. Armed with a degree in meteorology from St. Louis University in Missouri, Ellen made her way back to Boston for an internship with legendary meteorologist Bruce Schwoegler. She wanted to be a TV meteorologist but quickly discovered that she lacked the hands-on skills she needed to perform her craft in front of a camera, so Ellen enrolled in graduate courses at Emerson College. She would spend the next 23 years as a meteorologist in TV markets, both small and large. At WCVB TV, channel 5 in Boston, she was mentored by Dick Albert, who taught her to “just be you,” and her popularity among viewers grew exponentially. Always a lover of the Maine seacoast, Ellen cherished the time she spent walking the beaches with her Westie and began collecting heart-shaped rocks. She purchased a home in Maine and commuted daily into Massachusetts to be on the air. The commute drained her, but Ellen's heart rock collection grew, and she made the decision to leave meteorology behind, reinventing herself as an artist entrepreneur. Her new business, loverocksme.com was born. These days, she's winning awards for the success of her home-based business, which centers around flat-lay photography featuring countless heart-shaped rocks printed on note cards and 7 product lines, all made in the USA. How do rocks become shaped like hearts? Ellen explains: “It's a weakness in the rock that makes the heart form over time. These rocks are bashed and bashed along the coast of Maine. People tell me they've spent their lives trying to find one heart-shaped rock. But in my case, they find me. One day, I found 79 heart rocks in 45 minutes. I know that each one was kissed by an angel.” For 23 minutes focused on the power of reinvention, just hit that download button. I help them figure out where to start and what to do next so they can plan and write the book they can't stop thinking about. My mission is to add more color to the bookshelves by helping Black + Brown writers get clear on their ideas and confident in their writing skills so they can share their experiences, expertise, and stories with the world. My vision: Books by us are as widely known, accessible, and revered as the “classics.”I am a nerdy, intuitive, creative soul with a notebook obsession that is kind of getting out of hand. (Okay, it was out of hand when I had two full boxes of journals during our last move.) I'm also a professional nap-taker, a recovering hot cheetos puffs addict, and I've watched Parks and Rec so many times I can listen to it like a podcast and know exactly what's going on. And after a 7-year career as a licensed architect (it was a vibe, just not the one for me), I returned to my first love: books. I got certified in Nonfiction and Fiction Book Coaching through Author Accelerator, and I've been living the dream ever since.I intentionally work with mostly BIPOC because I know there are so many of us who have s**t to say, and there aren't a whole lot of people helping us get it said. If you're looking for a delightful new children's book to add to your little one's collection, you'll want to check out "Jeddy's Teddy" by actor-turned-author Jed Bernard. In this fun and insightful conversation, Jed chats with host Jed Doherty about his journey from the screen to the page, and the special bond between a boy and his beloved teddy bear. Jed shares the true story behind "Jeddy's Teddy," which he wrote this past July and released in October. As a child, Jed was quite attached to his teddy bear, Tommy, who became his best friend during a time when Jed struggled with a speech impediment. Jed fondly recalls using his imagination to take Tommy on all sorts of adventures, just like the kids do in classic books like "Where the Wild Things Are." The discussion touches on the importance of imagination and unstructured play in child development - something Jed feels is being lost in our tech-driven world. He emphasizes the magic that can happen when parents take the time to read aloud to their kids, using different voices and accents to bring the story to life. Jed also opens up about his own path, from overcoming speech challenges to pursuing a career in acting. He explains how writing "Jeddy's Teddy" allowed him to have more creative control, compared to the collaborative nature of his on-screen work. Whether you're a parent, educator, or just a lover of heartwarming tales, this episode is sure to leave you inspired. So grab a cozy blanket, snuggle up with your little ones, and get ready to dive into the world of Jed and his beloved teddy bear! Growing up in Northern California, Jacob Rosenberg developed his passion for video and film as a skateboarder in the early 1990s, making acclaimed videos for Plan B Skateboards under the mentorship of the late founder Mike Ternasky. As Team Kamala begs Democrats to "hang in there" and not be dismayed if some key battleground states get called early for Trump, the whole world is watching the media lie and propagandize at levels we haven't seen since Covid. It's a tale of two polls in Iowa as Des Moines Register polling shows Kamala up by three and Emerson College polling shows Trump up by NINE. The media deceptively edit Trump to suggest he wants Liz Cheney assassinated and get CRUCIFIED when Trump's actual comments come out.
Steve discusses the results of an Emerson College poll, one of the best polls of the last few cycles, and says he's concerned with what he sees. Then, pastor Joel Webbon of Right Response Ministries joins the program to give a pro-abolition perspective on voting for Donald Trump. In Hour Two, Steve and the team continue their study in the book of Romans for Theology Thursday. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
