Episode 131 Tony Rettman . Author of NYHC and other books Growing up the kid brother of the City Gardens DJ is a sick way to walk into hardcore punk. His first show he wasn't out of grade school. Over time he would go from writing zines to writing freelance articles for multiple magazines. Eventually he would work with Revelation Records on Why be something you're not, focusing on the early Detroit scene. Later he would work on the collection of interviews for NYHC - 1980-1990 which would end up being released on Bazillion Points. His latest was Straight Edge - A Clear headed Hardcore Punk history also on Bazillion points. This was a fun one with alot of insight in how the writing side works on articles, zines and books. There is alot more to his story that he tells better than I can type out. www.rettman.substack.com (go here to purchase signed copies of books) www.instagram/no.idols.hc www.revhq.com/products/tony-rettman-why-be-something-that-youre-not-dcore-1979-1w www.bazillionpoints.com/books/nyhc-new-york-hardcore-1980-1990-by-tony-rettman/ www.bazillionpoints.com/books/straight-edge-a-clear-eyed-hardcore-punk-history-by-tony-rettman/ RIP Dave Stein - clips taken from www.youtu.be/Nr8BOcyi3EY?si=xtVtY5s-ZxnnPVs_ Opening Track of Episode Worn - Burning Dread from Condensing Flesh From Within Records www.instagram.com/wornhardcore www.instagram.com/fromwithinrecords

Episode 125 Some thoughts that come from greater minds than mine. With the summer comes everyone too busy to come on a podcast so I had been pulling together some ideas when Norman Brannon's relaunch of Anti-Matter as a substack spurned some real energy into my brain for the first time in awhile in a way that only someone like Norm and his words could inspire. For those of you who don't know what a substack is, its a way writers can offer their time and craft and be supported by those who wish to support them. www.antimatter.substack.com Follow and support the relaunch of one of the most pivotal zines of the 90's hardcore zines For most of episode I try to pull together some ideas from my library to engage you all to think further on the subject of hardcore and selling out etc, but I don't feel like I put it together tight enough. In time I'll get better at it, but it was fun to chat with you all for a bit. TM pod 35 Jason talks with music and culture writer Tony Rettman about his life and work. The story starts in Trenton with a 11 year old Tony being drafted into punk by his older brother who was a DJ at the city's legendary City Gardens venue. From there he branches out to nearby Philly and NY to explore those scenes and most importantly in his telling to buy as many records and zines as he could. He describes his immersion in the straight edge hardcore scene of the late 80's and his work with Tim McMahon on Common Sense, one of the defining zines of that period. We move from there to his maturing into a more well rounded music fan, his appreciation of free jazz etc. The conversation closes with talk of his life today living with MS and the challenges and rewards of working as a writer. It's a great conversation with a great guy. Enjoy and buy Tony's books! Thank you for listening and for supporting the Traegermethod podcast. This week on Arts & Seizures, hosts Mike Edison and Judy McGuire are having a punk rock day! Welcoming Tony Rettman, author of “New York Hardcore 1980-1990,” to the show, the trio throws back to this genre’s glory days in the big apple. Known for its glamorous 1970s punk rock scene, New York City matched the grim urban reality of the 1980s with a rawer musical uprising: New York hardcore. Bands of misfits from across the region gravitated to the forgotten frontier of Manhattan’s Lower East Side. With a a backdrop of despair, bands like Agnostic Front, Cro-Mags, Murphy’s Law, and Youth of Today confronted their reality with relentlessly energetic gigs at CBGB, A7, and the numerous squats in the area. Tony’s oral history captures ten years of struggling, including the scene’s regional rivalries with D.C. and Boston, the birth of moshing, the clash and coming to terms of hardcore and heavy metal, the straightedge movement, and the unlikely influence of Krishna consciousness. Tune in to get your mosh on! This program was brought to you by Roberta’s Pizza “The book had more legs than we thought, let’s just say that!” [30:15] —Tony Rettman on Arts & Seizures
