Alejandro Jodorowsky's The Holy Mountain This week we continue our love for Midnight and Cult Movies. For this episode we return to the great Chilean-French filmmaker, Alejandro Jodorowsky. A Visionary Artist and Poet of the Cinema, Jodorowsky has created some of the most beautiful and challenging images and concepts ever conceived. Problematic, Polarizing, Poetic, and Personal, Jodorowsky's films exist as islands of beauty in a world of Cinema too often overwhelmed by commerce - established, continuinuing, and obvious proven projects, as well as "safe" childrens' fair. Jodorowsky digs deep into the humanity, history, and struggles of the species. The Holy Mountain is a powerful film that is not easily digested or - even - understood, but the poetry of the images in this film continue to haunt audiences since its release over a half century ago. Take a listen and make the decision if you wanto to make the dive into this beautiful and rewarding film. As always, we can be reached at gondoramos@yahoo.com - Many, Many Thanks. For those of you who would like to donate to this undying labor of love, you can do so with a contribution at https://www.buymeacoffee.com/watchrickramos - Anything and Everything is appreciated, You Cheap Bastards.
Before he was re-imagining Satanic Panic through the lens of a washed-up Cage-y rock star, Osgood Perkins was down for some woke re-telling of a fable so littered with bad horror movies, it's no wonder people didn't pay attention to this one. Here, we get a feminist Hansel and Gretel story with some BRON-tastic visual, a sprinkling of Jodorowsky-sky-sky inspo, and a nod to the "Potato Famine" being a wealth-induced massacre rather than the natural disaster people like to play it off as. It's the visually stunning, surprisingly short Gretel & Hansel on this fortnight's episode of Loathsome Things: A Horror Movie Podcast for people on the spectrum!

Shocktober 2025 spirals into demonic delirium with Juan López Moctezuma's Alucarda (1977). This feverish blast of Mexican Gothic horror follows Justine (Susana Kamini), a sheltered orphan who finds herself drawn to the wild, otherworldly Alucarda (Tina Romero) within the stone walls of a convent that's anything but holy. What begins as innocent friendship erupts into a blood-soaked storm of possession, blasphemy, and ecstatic madness.Ryan Luis Rodriguez and Mark Begley join Mike to dissect Moctezuma's infernal masterpiece — its ties to Jodorowsky's surrealism, its place in the “nunsploitation” subgenre, and its bold feminist undercurrents that still scorch the screen nearly fifty years later.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-projection-booth-podcast--5513239/support.Become a supporter of The Projection Booth at http://www.patreon.com/projectionbooth

THE SWIMMER (1968) We dive deep in to The Swimmer and discuss and analyze, maybe just a little bit the glorious film directed by Frank Perry, based on a screenplay by Eleanor Perry, from the 12 page short story by John Cheever. "Well-off ad man Ned Merrill (Burt Lancaster) is visiting a friend when he notices the abundance of backyard pools that populate their upscale suburb. Ned suddenly decides that he'd like to travel the eight miles back to his own home by simply swimming across every pool in town."If you're reading this I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your support. In this episode of Psyche Podcast, I sit down with Paul J. Leslie to explore the fascinating and controversial figure of Alejandro Jodorowsky—filmmaker, writer, and creator of psychomagic. Together, we unpack how Jodorowsky's surrealist films, theatrical experiments, and ritualistic interventions might inform psychotherapy today.Paul and I dive into the tension between theory and creativity in therapy, comparing Jodorowsky's work with the approaches of Milton Erickson, Bradford Keeney, and other innovators. We discuss the symbolic power of ritual, the role of improvisation in therapy, and why standardized treatment models often fall short in honoring the uniqueness of each client.Along the way, we reflect on performance, spontaneity, therapeutic alliance, and the risks of imposing ideology over human connection. Whether you're intrigued by Jodorowsky's art, curious about creative therapy, or simply interested in how therapists can remain open, playful, and adaptive, this conversation will spark your imagination.
Welcome to Mona Lisa Overpod, the show that asks the question "What is cyberpunk?" On each episode, hosts Ka1iban and author Lyda Morehouse dive into the genre that helped define sci-fi fiction in the '80s and break down the themes which remain relevant to our lives in the 21st century. Pull on your mirrorshades, jack into the matrix, and start your run with us today!Dense cityscapes, exotic fashions, humans sharing the streets with robots and cyborgs...the visual aspects of cyberpunk worlds are readily detectable and typically anticipated by the average sci-fi consumer. But the Blade Runners and Neuromancers and tech noir tales of science fiction owe their most anticipated signifiers to a seldom discussed comic story created by two titans of genre fiction and published in a broadly influential magazine that created from whole cloth the genre we think of as "Cyberpunk". In this episode, we discuss The Long Tomorrow and the story of its creators' collaboration, the powerful influence of Metal Hurlant and Heavy Metal on 1970s science fiction, the heady combination of the bandes dessinées art style and American noir, Moebius's arresting creations and Dan O'Bannon's fertile imagination, and whether or not cyberpunk is a matured genre. We also talk about the "cyberpunk purity test", bromine poisoning, hi-tech Furbies, #RIPAOL, "older brother magazines", the Shinders backroom right of passage, Moebius FM, Jodorowsky's Dune, cultural dandelions, sex panels, the first cyberpunk POC main character, tempered edgelordiness, the leveling effect of streaming on culture, and The Bonfire of the Vanities gets a beatdown!Le pied?NEWS UPDATE: Anthropic settles!https://www.theverge.com/news/766311/anthropic-class-action-ai-piracy-authors-settlementCheck out the totally real(?) This week's pick is courtesy of Patreon supporter John Hammond—an undisputed master of chaos, who previously cursed us with the likes of For Your Height Only, Bloody Muscle Body Builder in Hell, and Devil Fetus. Now, he's reached deep into the arthouse-horror void and pulled out Santa Sangre (1989), a film beloved by critics, film students, and probably no one with a functioning sleep schedule. While some might call it a surrealist masterpiece, others might say it's the kind of movie that would clear a room at a house party.Directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky—yes, the same man behind El Topo and other “What did I just watch?” experiences—Santa Sangre was his return to cinema after a ten-year break. Co-produced by Claudio Argento, it was shot in Mexico City with a mix of circus performers, real-life street characters, and Jodorowsky's own sons. The film draws from real-life crime, religious trauma, and about five pounds of metaphor, creating a hallucinatory, blood-soaked experience that critics loved. Allegedly. With elaborate practical effects, dreamlike sequences, and enough symbolism to choke a film studies syllabus, it's a cult darling that dares you to understand it—or even enjoy it.If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter.www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesbackTrailer Guy Plot SummaryHe was a child of the circus... broken, silent, and bound to a mother whose grip reached beyond the grave. In a world of twisted faith, shattered minds, and blood-soaked revenge, one man's descent into madness becomes a symphony of horror and illusion. From visionary director Alejandro Jodorowsky comes Santa Sangre—a surreal, nightmarish journey through trauma, obsession, and the haunting legacy of a past that refuses to die. When the curtain rises, there's no escape from the spectacle.thevhsstrikesback@gmail.comhttps://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback
