The gang inspires Quentin this week as they review the snowy spaghetti western from the 2nd most well-know Sergio in the biz... Sergio Corbucci's The Great Silence. With a french actor in the hero role, a german actor in the villain role, and and Italien writing and directing, this truly is an international picture. A relative unknown to the guys, The Great Silence is Pete's pick on the 2nd week of Spaghetti Western April, and its clear to see that Quentin Tarantino owes a lot of gratitude to this film. Join Aaron & guest host Rob Chenoweth as they close out this year's "Four Seasons Of Film" series by diving into the snowdrifts of Sergio Corbucci's cold-blooded late-60s western: The Great Silence. With chilling seasonal vibes and a bleak ending that's numbingly frigid, this winter western totally embraces its icy nature and paints the white snow spaghetti-sauce red. Boltered by beautiful cinematography, a killer score from Ennio Morricone, and a memorably menacing performance from Klaus Kinski as the loathsome Loco, the film offers a fascinating revisionist take on the western that sets it apart from the rest.

Devin & James are back in the saddle for another roundup of Italian flicks. A sampling of the cultiest of all cult genres, the SPAGHETTI WESTERNS! When Clint Eastwood rode through Spain and called it Mexico in 1964's Fistful of Dollars, it started a legit European phenomenon that would produce over 600 titles in barely over ten years! Whereas the American Westerns often whitewashed and mythologized its own westward history, the idea of the good guys always wearing white was losing steam by the 1960s, and the Italians had no sentimentality toward the Earp or James clans as historical figures. The Italian Western hero was the epitome of the anti-hero. Not so much straddling the line between good and bad, but rather stomping on it with their spurred boots. The settings may have been North American, but the politics were purely Italian. We start our discussion with the G.O.A.T., the transformative masterpiece that is Sergio Leone's ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST. We then move on to the sub-sub-genre of the Zapata Westerns (set within the Mexican Revolution) with Damiano Damiani's criminally underappreciated A BULLET FOR THE GENERAL. Then we lighten the mood a bit with a couple of Westerns that border on comedies while still being bloody and wild. The master Sergio Corbucci (so much more than "The Other Sergio") takes us on a wild ride across the border and back in COMPANEROS, and we finish up with the first film in Gianfranco Parolini's super-stylized hero-in-black series, SABATA! We've wrangled all your favorite Spaghetti West heroes: Nero, Milian, Van Cleef, Bronson, Fonda, Volonte, Kinski, and so many more. But when you hear the harmonica or banjo begin playing, you better run!

Yee-Haw!

If you know Quentin Tarantino's movies, it's probably not a huge surprise that he's a fan of Spaghetti Westerns. Tarantino's 2012 movie, Django Unchained, references Sergio Corbucci's 1966 Spaghetti Western Django. But the tribute doesn't stop there. There's a scene in Django Unchained where a man asks Django how he spells his name. Django says, “The D is silent.” The man responds, “I know.” That man is Franco Nero, the actor who plays Django in the original 1966 movie. The two Djangos, 46 years apart, sitting side by side. This is what's called intertextuality. It's referencing, quoting or alluding to other content. And it helps increase views and engagement with your content. That's one of the things we're talking about today with Max Bard, VP of Content at Pray.com. Together, we're taking lessons from Oscar-winning director Quentin Tarantino, like exploring outside of what is considered “brand safe,” incorporating intertextuality and getting nostalgic in your content.About our guest, Max BardMax Bard is an Executive Producer and the head of PRAY Studios, PRAY.COM's content production arm. As the head of PRAY Studios, Max has produced over 5,500 original podcast episodes, audio books, and daily devotionals. Max has worked with Superbowl Champions like Drew Brees, Emmy Award winners like Dr Phil, and Grammy Award winners like Lecrae to create world-class content for the Christian audience.Prior to PRAY.COM, Max was the President of VideoFort, Hollywood's largest supplier of aerial and nature stock footage to companies like Getty Images, Adobe, and Shutterstock. After graduation Max pursued his dream of writing, directing, and editing film & video content in genres ranging from Drama to Advertising to Music Videos. What B2B Companies Can Learn From Quentin Tarantino:Explore outside of what is “brand safe”. Sure, you can play it safe and continue to make slow but steady growth. But the big growth happens when you take risks. Max says, “If you want to hit the home runs, you have to take the big risks. And if you don't, then you can take the easy route and you'll probably keep that steady baseline. But if you want to get that massive spike, I think you got to try something every once in a while. Take that big risk.”Incorporate intertextuality. That is, use references to other popular content. You'll get more eyes on your content because you're piggybacking on what is already in the public consciousness. Max says, “Some people say that Quentin Tarantino copies other films.. But he is inspired by films of the past and TV shows and music and culture. Brands could do that too, and it's like an Easter egg. It's really cool if you can incorporate that into your campaigns. It could be massive, especially when it comes to memorability.”Get nostalgic. Pull from fondly remembered content. Tugging on those heartstrings, or the content people see with rose-colored glasses, creates that positive association with your brand. Max says, “You can see this a lot in Tarantino's films.  I think a prime example is in Pulp Fiction when they enter Jack Rabbit Slims and they're walking around the restaurant and you see Marilyn Monroe in there and you see James Dean. The waitresses and the waiters are all people from the fifties.”Quotes*”He has this distinctive style that stands out. If you're going to a [Quentin] Tarantino film, you don't have to go in saying, ‘Hey, we're going to watch this Quentin Tarantino film.' The moment that it starts, you're going to tell just from the visuals, from the cuts, from the camera work, that it is his. He has that immediate brand identity. That's a big part of your marketing, is having that memorable piece within your brand. This highlights the importance of developing a unique brand voice that can really help you stick out amongst this crowd of hundreds of other brands,”*”When you see these things that bring back positive memories, I think if you can do that with your branding, then whatever it is you're doing, whether it be a campaign or or a commercial spot, a Facebook ad, people will remember it better. And if they remember it better, ideally they'll purchase your product or want to work with you, or they'll have that positive brand association with you.”Time Stamps[0:55] Meet Max Bard, VP of Content at Pray.com[1:56] Discussing Quentin Tarantino's Films and Influence[6:21] Max's Role at Pray.com[16:30] About Quentin Tarantino's Unique Film Style[23:24] Marketing Takeaways from Tarantino[28:54] The Power of Over-the-Top Branding[30:27] Intertextuality: Borrowing from the Best[38:31] Nostalgia: Emotional Connection in Marketing[45:19] Familiar Voices: Leveraging Celebrity Power[50:34] Max's Advice for other Marketing ProfessionalsLinksConnect with Max on LinkedInLearn more about Pray.comAbout Remarkable!Remarkable! is created by the team at Caspian Studios, the premier B2B Podcast-as-a-Service company. In 1966, somewhere along the United States-Mexico border, a man wearing a tattered Union uniform drags a coffin across the desert… and into the hearts of the Italian moviegoing public. What was it about this mix of blood, violence, sweaty masculine tusslin', and steely blue eyes? With just one film, Sergio Corbucci inspired over thirty five remakes, sequels, and rip-offs – the first two even in the same year the original film came out. In this episode, as part of their once Bootleg Bond series, now expanded Genre series, Bart and Jenna make it their business to map out Django from the beginning. They start with the widely seen original and slowly make their way through a mix of western wannabes, surrealist desert violence and pure cowboy schlock. They also discuss what makes Django so appealing: is it the cathartic, unflinchingly bloody violence, or is it the leftist beating heart that many spaghetti westerns share? Why not both? The following films are discussed:• Django (1966) Directed by Sergio Corbucci Starring Franco Nero, Loredana Nusciak, Eduardo Fajardo• A Few Dollars for Django (1966) Pochi dollari per Django Directed by León Klimovsky & Enzo G. Castellari Starring Anthony Steffen, Gloria Osuna, Ennio Girolami• Django Shoots First (1966) Django spara per primo Directed by Alberto De Martino Starring Glenn Saxson, Ida Galli, Fernando Sancho• Django Kill... If You Live, Shoot! (1967) Se sei vivo spara Directed by Giulio Questi Starring Tomas Milian, Marilù Tolo, Piero Lulli• Django, Prepare a Coffin (1968) Preparati la bara! Directed by Ferdinando Baldi Starring Terence Hill, Horst Frank, George Eastman• Django the Bastard (1968) Django il bastardo Directed by Sergio Garrone Starring Anthony Steffen, Paolo Gozlino, Luciano Rossi

On this week's episode, Phillip is joined by Robert Papp from Circle of Jerks and The Cinemigos Podcast. The two talk all about the 1968 Sergio Corbucci' classic, The Great Silence. They start by paying respect to Burt Young and Richard Roundtree who both recently passed away. Phillip makes a correction from last week. First it's time for Tarantino Talks, and Phillip reads a quote from Quentin Tarantino about The Great Silence. Phillip then reads the general information about the movie, and he and Rob add some facts in as well. Then it's time for Listener Opinions from Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Phillip plays The Spaghetti Western Database ad spot. Then they discuss all about Il Grande Silenzio, and some more facts throughout. Phillip reads a review of the movie. They then answer whether they noticed anything in the movie, they think that Quentin Tarantino might have liked or used in a film. Phillip and Rob then individually rate the movie on a scale of 1 to 5. The two of them then answer the question, "Would you buy, rent, or find this movie for free?". It's then time for Phil's Film Favorite of the Week; Killers of the Flower Moon (2023) (5 stars.). The randomizer then picks the movie for next week, so come back then, when Phillip will be joined by Sam Panicko from B and S About Movies and Drive-In Asylum to discuss the 1972 blaxploitation movie, Black Gunn. Those Wonderful People Out There In The Dark

When I saw Yojimbo, at last, from Japanese director Akira Kurosawa, I thought, this is the greatest samurai film ever. But, I thought, he stole it all from Sergio Leone and A Fistful Of Dollars. Boy, was I naïve. That was backwards, of course, if I'd cared to check the dates of release. But the story was even more layered than that. Kurosawa, Leone, Sergio Corbucci, they were all swimming in a beautiful blue sea, not only of water, but of time and history. They conjured up one of the greatest stories that ever hit the screen of the fight for and triumph of right, the lure of money and what it may devolve to, and the beauty of the loner hero. It was a story that had been told many times before. And many after. For the ages. email: David@thosewonderfulpeople.comWebsite and blog: www.thosewonderfulpeople.comIG: @thosewonderfulpeopleTwitter: @FilmsInTheDark

Here's a short teaser of our brand new Patreon-exclusive episode of Uncut Gems Retrospectives, a monthly series where we pick a handful of movies tied around a specific theme, a filmmaker or an actor and have an honest chat about them. This month we are dedicating our mini-retrospective to the memory of Ennio Morricone as we talk about three movies directed by Sergio Corbucci for which he wrote music. These are Navajo Joe, The Mercenary and The Great Silence. Over the course of our sprawling conversation you will hear us talk about how Morricone's music helped to define spaghetti western, how Corbucci brought grit and violence to the genre in a way never seen before him, how these movies use their genre templates to tell stories about modern times and much, much more!
