Ep. 28 Head of Public Affairs for the Baltimore, Chicago and Fairfax County VA police departments, Anthony Guglielmi talks about advocating for LE while being transparent with and educating the public on what it means to be a police officer. He reflects on the rewards and challenges of supporting police departments in two of the largest and most violent cities in the country. While with Baltimore PD from 2008 to 2013, Anthony helped the department communicate their strategy to reduce rampant gun violence through “targeted prosecution and putting the right people in jail for the right reason at the right times.” He also discusses BPD's Gun Trace Task Force (GTTF) and the resulting scandal which led to officers being charged with racketeering, robbery, extortion and fraud. Anthony talks about how this happened and what went wrong. Before the GTTF scandal broke, Anthony was recruited by Chicago PD to manage the release of dash cam video of the killing of Laquan McDonald by Officer Jason Van Dyke, video that contradicted police statements. It was Anthony's job to help the department and the city rebuild public trust. Ultimately, Chicago PD become one of the first departments in the country to release body cam footage within days of an incident, a practice and a concept that was unheard of at the time. After Chicago PD, Anthony joined the Fairfax County Police Department in Virginia outside Washington D.C. We revisit the January 6th insurrection and Fairfax County PD's mutual aid response. And we talk about Anthony's commitment to telling the real stories of LE. His teams have produced and distributed videos about the good work officers do. In Anthony's words: “Here's what you didn't see on last night's news.” ©Abby Ellsworth. All interviews booked, conducted and edited by Abby Ellsworth. These are 5 Disturbing Police Cover-Up Cases. 5. Jodi Huisentruit It was June 27, 1995. Twenty-seven year old, Minnesota-native, Jodi Huisentruit, called her producer at KIMT-TV saying she had overslept and was heading into the office. As a TV reporter, Jodi was due to be on screen by 6:00 AM. By 7:00 AM, co-workers called police asking for a welfare check. When they got there, they found Jodi’s car still parked at her apartment complex. 4. Matt Lauzon At 14 years old, Matt Lauzon was working part-time for a cleaning crew in Biddeford, Maine. In 2000, Matt was cleaning a bank parking lot when a stranger, Michael McKeown, offered to get him food from a Burger King. Matt declined but McKeown got him food anyway. After he was done cleaning, the two headed towards McKeown’s house. He entered McKeown’s home but once inside, McKeown initiated oral sex on him. 3. Jon Burge A veteran of the United States Army, Captain John Burge served tours in Vietnam and South Korea. After his service, he started his career as a police officer in the Chicago Police Department. It was here his reign of terror started. Starting in 1972, when he was only 24 years old, up until 1991, Burge directly participated or approved the torture of over 118 to 120 individuals held in police custody. 2. Sandra Bland In 2015, Sandra Bland was ready to start a new temporary job with Prairie View in Texas. Bland was known as a Civil Rights Activist, often posting about police mistreatment of black people. On July 10, 2015, Texas officer Brian Encinia followed Bland around University Drive in Prairie View, Texas. The officer has had a history of pretextual traffic stops, meaning, he would use minor violations to stop a vehicle and search it, hoping to find something criminal. 1. Jason Van Dyke On October 20, 2014, Chicago teen, Laquan McDonald was walking in the middle of South Pulaski Road carrying a knife. He was breaking into vehicles and truck in the area. About eight officers responded including Officer Jason Van Dyke. As officers confronted McDonald, he used the knife to slice a patrol vehicle’s tires and damage its windshield. This year, the conference will focus on a range of issues, including a trade talk meeting between US President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, and the potential signing of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). Trump's meetings with the leaders of Turkey and South Korea will be "pull-asides" at the G20 summit, rather than formal bilateral meetings. Trump also canceled his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin due to the situation in Ukraine. In the wake of the Laquan McDonald shooting in Chicago and the verdict, the FBI has announced the official launch of a national use-of-force data collection effort to track officer-involved shootings and other police incidents. In fact, today ended day two of the trial of ex-Officer Joseph Walsh, former Detective David March and suspended Officer Thomas Gaffney. Prosecutors allege the three concocted a version of the shooting to protect Officer Jason Van Dyke, who was convicted of second-degree murder and 16 counts of aggravated assault (one count for each shot fired by Van Dyke at McDonald) earlier this year. Is this database going to be all that we need it to be?In Alison Weir's recent MintPress piece, "Pro-Israel Groups Attack Rand Paul for Blocking $38 Billion to Israel," she writes: "Paul has placed a 'block' on legislation to give Israel $38 billion over the next 10 years – $23,000 per every Jewish Israeli family of four. This is the largest military aid package in US history and amounts to $7,230 per minute to Israel or $120 per second. A stack of $38 billion dollar bills would reach 10 times beyond the International Space Station." What does it mean for Senator Paul to place a block on a piece of legislation? Why is he doing this?

Social unrest has erupted in Chicago over the 2014 police shooting of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald. 400 days after the black teen was shot down by Officer Jason Van Dyke, the city released video footage showing that the black teen appeared to be walking away from officers when the white cop opened fire. Protesters also accuse city officials of trying to cover up the shooting by releasing dash cam video without sound and deleting 86 minutes of video footage of the incident recorded by a nearby Burger King security camera. Why did it take 13 months for the video to be made public? Was there a cover-up at the Chicago Police Department and mayor's office? We discussed those questions and delved into the Chicago's long history of political corruption with Tio Hardiman, the Executive Director for CeaseFire Violence Interrupters, INC
