Tom McKeown lived and breathed basketball throughout junior and senior high school in Babylon. As an eighth grader in 1974-1975, he got to experience the thrill of watching the varsity team win their league and the Suffolk County championships. As fate would have it, this was also the first year that New York State allowed county champions to play each other, setting up a showdown between Babylon's Panthers and Nassau County's champs, the South Side Cyclones of Rockville Center. It was an epic season that engaged Tom so deeply that he has written his version of the story as This Is Panther Country. We don't want to spoil the outcome but the subtitle is A Memoir of Youth, Underdog Spirit, and Basketball Glory. Available March 18, 2025, the book chronicles life on the court, in the school hallways, and in the McKeown family home on Coppertree Lane. You'll learn a lot about the ins-and-outs of basketball tournaments but you'll also be pulled back to your own high school days of close friend groups, petty slights, unrequited crushes, and weekend parties.   Further Research This is Panther Country by Tom McKeown Babylon Jr/Sr High School Glenn Vickers (Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame) “The ABA was Short Lived, but Its Impact on Basketball is Eternal” (Smithsonian Mag) Audio Footnotes: Mickey Quinn and St. John the Baptist High School (episode 133)

THE CHALLENGEIn today's candidate market post pandemic, we are dealing with back to office mandates and obviously for an industry that requires some travel to a SCIF or customer site. McKeown says, “I think for us and for everybody else, the challenges finding people that are willing to come in the office to some degree in a hybrid capacity… but there are still a ton of candidates out there looking for fully remote positions.”HOW CLEARANCEJOBS HELPSJay has a decade in the US Army and served a decade as a police officer and got into business about seven years ago. “And I have always been reluctant about joining this business world, coming from 2 tactical sides. I was a vice cop in DC working undercover for a decade…and was like what the heck is recruiting?” After starting his career and learning all about the different job boards and from the very beginning of working in the government contracting sector, he became the super user of ClearanceJobs.com. “Coming from that side of the industry and having a board that's dedicated towards clearances and tends to be military and government heavy - it almost feels comfortable. I guess when you're in there, it almost feels like a like a board made for prior service type of people.”For ClearanceJobs, McKeown loves the user friendliness and ease of functionality. “The UI / UX or the front end of ClearanceJobs has an ease of use and feel. You know, when I'm comparing it to the other boards, it is pretty self-explanatory where you can navigate around and buttons and pretty much find what you're looking for. I've noticed with the other boards some of the additional seem to be hidden or hard to find.”Red River's favorite functionality of the site is being able to build pipelines and tap into the most engaged talent to land a phone call and eventually extend an offer. Their recruiting team understands that the deadline is today when the government says they need a candidate today. “ClearanceJobs has bailed me out.” After using the Boolean or Intellisearch function to find qualified candidates, Red River sorts candidates by who was last active on the site to get a sense of who who's been on the board most recently. By pulling those last ten active candidates that are qualified and calling those individuals, they've improved their success rate to receiving call backs to the 90th percentile. “Just for that reason alone justifies your board. Much less all the other cool functionalities and features.”In any industry, but particularly the cleared space, it is important to act quickly and find that talent for national security programs. Is ClearanceJobs a top source for these types of missions? McKeown says, “Yeah, by far you're our top source for cleared candidates.” Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Carrie and Melody discuss how to incorporate animal and eco protection into your life in meaningful ways to meet your own life goals, priorities, and interests in big and small ways, syncing up with actions and virtues the world needs from us humans.  Since the beginning of each new year is a time to reassess our own goals and priorities, it seemed a good time to have an In Tune to Nature show that focused on our own personal growth resolutions and how that can synergize with efforts to help other species. This is also a special show because it airs on the radio on our birthday, January 8th, as my co-host and friend Melody Paris and I share the same birthday – just one of the many things we have in common. The agenda for the 1 hour show today is that before we get to some personal growth exercises and self reflections that you our listeners can use to figure out your own best path (inspired by best selling personal growth authors), I thought Melody and I would start by sharing our own path toward incorporating animal and eco issues into our daily lives (over the decades) to see how our own stories and actions might resonate with listeners or spark ideas for you. So it would be good for you to have a way to take notes during this show, and you can pause at times to answer some questions and do some self reflection (on your inner priorities, and what excites you, what you're good at, and what the world needs to protect animals and nature) before we move on to each new topic. My sign-off each show has been “Take care of yourself and others, including other species,” and I literally think that is the meaning of life. And in this anthropocentric (human-centered) culture, I want to make sure we don't leave other species out of that care-taking effort -- with the goal of us shifting our identities and culture toward a biocentric (life-centered) orientation and beginning to see ourselves as part of a broader community as human animal earthlings. So our resolutions/goals can be in improving our mindset and identity as well as in formulating tangible task-oriented goals/achievements. Toward the end of the podcast, Melody and I review the top 20 virtues that humans could embody, from pg 207 in my "Human Animal Earthling Identity" book, so virtue ethics plays a role in this show. The show draws upon books like "Essentialism" by G. McKeown, "Emotional Chaos to Clarity" by P. Moffit, and "Die with Zero" by B. Perkins, and "Oasis Earth" by R. Steiner.   "In Tune to Nature" is a weekly radio show airing Wednesdays at 6:30pm Eastern Time on 89.3FM-Atlanta radio and streaming worldwide on wrfg.org (Radio Free Georgia, a nonprofit indie station). Hosted by me, Carrie Freeman, or Melody Paris. The show's website and action items can be found at https://wrfg.org/in-tune-to-nature/  Please support nonprofit indie media like our Radio Free Georgia station at https://wrfg.org/  Thank you! In this Leader Fluent Podcast Series, I'm sharing a snippet from each chapter of my book, Insanely Practical Leadership: 12 No-Nonsense Keys to Master the Art of Leading Yourself and Others. The book addresses a host of insanely practical skills, and it provides you and your team with the tools to apply the insights to your life. Enjoy this taste of what's in the book, and learn more about Insanely Practical Leadership and the bonus content that goes with the book HERE.  Leadership is immensely challenging. In fact, as I coach leaders, I hear stories of bold visions, heart-breaking pain, board members gone rogue, difficult leadership transitions, and situations with intense spiritual warfare.  The truth is, there is no shortage of stress and struggle in leadership. But as the external pressures of leadership increase, we need a more powerful presence within us. That's why the Apostle Paul said in Ephesians 3:16, “I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit.”  So, where do we start? Well, to become a spiritually grounded leader, we need four spiritual keys.  1. Spiritual Priority Author Greg Mckeown made an interesting observation about the word priority. McKeown notes that when the word priority came into the English language in the 1400s, it was originally a singular word that meant “the prior or very first thing.”  It remained a “singular” word for the next 500 years, until the 1900s when we made the term plural: priorities. Well, McKeown poses a powerful question about the word “priorities.” He said, can there be multiple very first things? Unfortunately, many people think there can be, but Jesus makes it clear only one thing can be first. In Matthew 6:33 Jesus said, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” This is the starting place to become a spiritually grounded leader. Seeking God must be our very first thing.   2. Spiritual Practices Author Richard Foster once said, “We do indeed engage in practices—disciplines, if you will—but remember these practices earn us nothing in the economy of God. Nothing. Their only purpose is to place us before God. That is all…God then steps into our actions and, over time and experience, produces in us the formation of heart and mind and soul for which we long.” Notice, the spiritual practices don't change us—God does. The practices are merely the way we place ourselves before God so He can do His transforming work in us. So, whether it's prayer, Bible study, worship, fasting, serving, generosity, or community, what are the spiritual practices you need to develop to bring you before God so He can transform you in His presence?  3. Spiritual Pace After performing a miracle where He fed 5,000 people, Jesus told His disciples to get into a boat and cross the lake. Then, Jesus went up into the hills to pray by himself. And the Bible tells us, “Night fell while he was there alone.”  But the disciples didn't immediately get in the boat and cross the lake. Instead, John 6:16 says, “That evening Jesus' disciples went down to the shore to wait for him.” And eventually, darkness fell but Jesus still hadn't come back. That passage sounds simple enough, but when I read it, I'm convicted with this thought: Has anyone ever had to wait on me to finish praying? You see, Jesus modeled the unrushed way by not rushing His time with the Father. Despite the demands Jesus faced, His leadership pace didn't exceed His spiritual pace. I know, unrushed time with God sounds impossible, especially when speed is the name of the game for so many leaders. But if we're not careful, we'll begin measuring intimacy with God by our efficiency with God.  Efficiency sounds like a good leadership tactic, but intimacy is the fuel to help you finish well. Chapter 1:Summary of Essentialism"Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less" by Greg McKeown is a guide that emphasizes the importance of focusing on what truly matters in both personal and professional life. The central premise of the book is that by eliminating non-essential activities and focusing on the essential, individuals can lead more meaningful and productive lives. Here are some key concepts from the book:1. The Essentialist Mindset: Essentialism is about distinguishing between what is essential and what is not. It encourages readers to analyze their commitments and focus their energy on the things that truly matter.2. Trade-offs: McKeown highlights that life is full of trade-offs, and understanding these is crucial for prioritizing effectively. It's important to recognize that saying "yes" to one thing often means saying "no" to another.3. Explore, Eliminate, Execute: The author suggests a three-step process for adopting an essentialist approach: explore options to identify what is truly important, eliminate the unnecessary activities that distract from those priorities, and execute on the most essential tasks.4. Focus on the Vital Few: McKeown advocates for the "Pareto Principle" (80/20 rule), which suggests that a small percentage of efforts often lead to the majority of results. By concentrating on the vital few items that yield the most significant impact, one can enhance effectiveness.5. Create Space to Think: The book stresses the importance of creating time and space for reflection, allowing individuals to evaluate their priorities and make more intentional choices.6. Boundaries: Essentialism also involves setting boundaries to protect one's time and energy. This means being comfortable saying "no" to non-essential commitments and distractions.7. Design Your Life: McKeown encourages readers to take control of their lives by designing their daily routines and environments to support their essential priorities.Overall, "Essentialism" provides a framework for living a more focused and purposeful life, encouraging readers to pursue less but better, ultimately leading to greater satisfaction and achievement.Chapter 2:The Theme of Essentialism"Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less" by Greg McKeown is a non-fiction book that explores the concept of essentialism—a mindset that encourages individuals to prioritize what is truly important in their lives and eliminate the non-essential. The book is structured around several key ideas and concepts rather than a traditional plot and character development typically found in fiction. Here are the key elements outlined in the book: Key Plot Points (Concepts)1. The Essence of Essentialism:- McKeown argues for a disciplined approach to life and work, where individuals focus on what is essential and discard the non-essential. This involves making intentional choices and recognizing that not everything is equally important.2. The Importance of Choice:- According to McKeown, recognizing that we have a choice is crucial. Many people fall into the trap of saying "yes" to everything, which leads to overwhelm and diluted efforts.3. The Power of Trade-Offs:- Life is full of trade-offs, and understanding that you cannot do everything allows you to make better decisions based on your values and long-term goals.4. The Essentialist Mindset:- Embracing an essentialist mindset involves being selective about commitments, being clear about purpose, and being disciplined in execution. This means learning to say no to good opportunities that do not align with one's priorities.5. The Process of Exploration:- McKeown encourages readers to explore their options and reflect on what truly brings value to their lives and work. This involves self-reflection and honest evaluation of...

Sullivan said simply: “The stakes are high” and if the nation doesn't act more intentionally to seize advantages and to deploy AI more quickly and more comprehensively for national security, the U.S. risks “squandering our hard-earned lead” with the technology. Meanwhile, the Pentagon is bracing for what's ahead in the shift to focus on post-quantum encryption and the arrival of quantum computers. Among all of the cybersecurity modernization efforts underway at the Defense Department, cryptography has recently moved to the top of Deputy CIO for Cybersecurity David McKeown's list of priorities. Seth Godin is a renowned author, entrepreneur, and thought leader in marketing and business. With over 20 published books, including bestsellers like "Purple Cow" and "Tribes," he has reshaped how we think about marketing strategies, leadership, and creative innovation. Known for his daily blog that reaches an extensive readership, Seth is a pivotal figure in modern management, often compared to legendary thinkers like Peter Drucker. Recently, he authored "This is Strategy" and is a seminal voice in understanding and navigating complex systems. Episode Summary: In this Part 2 episode, Greg is joined by the legendary Seth Godin, whose work in business literature and marketing has influenced millions globally. Godin and McKeown explore how viewing the world through a systems lens can empower anyone to take strategic, high-leverage actions that yield significant results. The discussion highlights the profound impact of naming and defining elements within systems to influence outcomes and decisions. Seth shares personal anecdotes, emphasizing the shift from passive observation to active engagement, using empathy as a strategic tool. The episode is rich with insights on navigating change, avoiding false proxies, and how companies and individuals can reinvent themselves by unearthing these vital, albeit often hidden, opportunities. Key Takeaways: Systems Thinking: The importance of understanding and navigating complex systems to take strategic, high-impact actions. Empathy as a Tool: Using empathy not merely for kindness but as a practical tool to serve and understand others' underlying motivations and goals. Changing Perspectives: Transitioning from passive observation to active engagement can unlock opportunities for personal and professional growth. Avoiding False Proxies: Identifying and rejecting false success metrics to focus on actions that truly matter. Curiosity's Power: Embracing curiosity to uncover underlying truths and leverage points in any interaction or system. Notable Quotes: Seth Godin: "I think that empathy sometimes gets put into the ghetto called kindness. And I'm in favor of kindness. But empathy is also a really practical tool." Greg McKeown: "Curious people just understood somehow that the system gets more interesting behind the surface." Seth Godin: "If we can just try to imagine what it is to be the node that they are, try to imagine what their internal system is like or what their deep goals are, we can serve them without manipulating them." Do you feel like your task list is long and your stress levels high? I think a lot about working moms, who are out there serving their families, their children, while also working and never taking a break. In my coaching, I talk to a lot of these women, and it can feel hard for them to say no. Consider this question based on Greg McKeown's work, Essentialism: what is essential in your life? Knowing this can help you know how to say no to activities that ultimately don't serve you, your work, or your families. Take this action step today: Based on McKeown's book, first, make a list of your current commitments and activities, then evaluate each one to determine its true importance in your life. This is where you identify your priorities. Using your CliftonStrengths can help you navigate this process. For example, if you have the Strategic strength like I do, you can look at the big picture and spot patterns to identify your priorities. After making your list, eliminate non-essential activities by removing or delegating those that don't contribute significantly to your values. In a world where we're expected to mask our struggles behind a white coat or a suit, finding the courage to be an open book is truly commendable. We all have struggles and setbacks in different forms. Some of us face challenges in our careers, others deal with personal issues, and many of us encounter both at the same time. Whether it's grappling with addiction, experiencing job loss, or dealing with health crises, the journey through these trials can be incredibly tough.    Many of us compartmentalize our pain until it overwhelms us, but acknowledging our challenges is the first step towards healing. When we begin to openly recognize and talk about our difficulties, we take a significant step toward recovery. Embracing this openness allows us to seek the support we need from mentors, coaches, and loved ones. By sharing our experiences and vulnerabilities, we break down the walls of isolation and build connections with others who may have faced similar struggles and provide them with grace we have received.Remember, it's through understanding our struggles and reaching out for support that we transform our challenges into strengths.    Courtney Barrows McKeown, MD is a board-certified general surgeon. She earned her medical degree at New York Medical College, graduating Alpha Omega Alpha. She completed her general surgery residency training in 2020 at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, MA, and received additional subspecialty training in hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB surgery) in the Midwest. She started her career as a community general surgeon in New Hampshire, and is excited for her next opportunity, where she will be moving to TN to join Dr. Vertrees' Columbia Surgical Partners as a general surgeon. Her mission is to provide hope and mentorship to other early career physicians who may be struggling with similar issues she faced, reduce stigma, and help drive systemic changes in order to make our professional climate better for the next generation of surgeons.   In this episode with Dr. Courtney Barrows McKeown, we will learn about the power of resilience, the importance of seeking help, and the value of mentorship in overcoming personal and professional challenges. Dr. McKeown openly discusses the difficulties of dealing with addiction, especially in a high-pressure profession like surgery. Her honesty about her struggles is both courageous and inspiring, shedding light on the often-hidden challenges faced by many professionals. Dr. McKeown's story is a beacon of hope, showing that with perseverance and the right support, we can overcome even the most daunting obstacles.    "It's not my fault that I have a disease, but it is my responsibility to get it treated and then manage it." –  Dr. Courtney Barrows McKeown   Topics Covered: (00:00:34) Introducing our special guest, Dr. Courtney Barrows McKeown (00:02:56) Hitting rock bottom (00:04:01) How acceptance and accountability change Dr. Courtney for the better (00:06:03) Career opportunity through coaching connections (00:08:52) The silent struggles of medical professionals (00:10:37) The value of coaching for physicians (00:13:00) An overcomer by the grace of God (00:17:12) How Dr. Courtney's med school stress sparked a struggle with addiction (00:21:38) Advertisement: Are you prepared for life's unexpected challenges?
