Long before he directed Wicked, In The Heights, or the groundbreaking film Crazy Rich Asians, Jon M. Chu was a movie-obsessed first-generation Chinese American helping at his parents' Chinese restaurant in Silicon Valley and forever facing the cultural identity crisis endemic to children of immigrants. Growing up on the cutting edge of 21st-century technology gave Chu the tools he needed to make his mark at USC film school and to be discovered by Steven Spielberg, but he soon found himself struggling to understand who he was. In Viewfinder: A Memoir of Seeing and Being Seen, Chu questions what it means when your dreams collide with your circumstances and how it's possible to succeed even when the world changes beyond all recognition.  On August 3, 2024, Jon M. Chu came to the Sydney Goldstein Theater in San Francisco to talk with writer, actor, comedian, and rapper Nora Lum, aka “Awkwafina,”, who starred in Crazy Rich Asians.  This program originally aired in August 2024.

Katie's biography, Not Your China Doll, re-examines the life of Hollywood pioneer, Anna May Wong. It's been praised by Marvel star and New York Times Bestseller Simu Liu as well as the Times, the Telegraph and the Guardian. It was nominated for the 2024 Goodreads Choice Awards in History & Biography and selected as one of Entertainment Weekly's 'Books we're excited to read in 2024'.Katie Gee Salisbury is the author of Not Your China Doll, a new biography of Anna May Wong, the first Asian American movie star. Her work has appeared in the New York Times, Vanity Fair, The Ringer, the Asian American Writers' Workshop, and elsewhere. She was a finalist for the Jerome Hill Artist Fellowship in 2021 and gave the TED Talk “As American as Chop Suey.” She also writes the newsletter Half-Caste Woman. A fifth-generation Chinese American who hails from Southern California, she now lives in Brooklyn.Get the book here or at your local seller. Set against the glittering backdrop of Los Angeles during the gin-soaked Jazz Age and the rise of Hollywood, this debut book celebrates Anna May Wong, the first Asian American movie star, to bring an unsung heroine to light and reclaim her place in cinema history. Before Constance Wu, Sandra Oh, Awkwafina, or Lucy Liu, there was Anna May Wong. In her time, she was a legendary beauty, witty conversationalist, and fashion icon. Plucked from her family's laundry business in Los Angeles, Anna May Wong rose to stardom in Douglas Fairbanks's blockbuster The Thief of Bagdad. Fans and the press clamored to see more of this unlikely actress, but when Hollywood repeatedly cast her in stereotypical roles, she headed abroad in protest.Anna May starred in acclaimed films in Berlin, Paris, and London. She dazzled royalty and heads of state across several nations, leaving trails of suitors in her wake. She returned to challenge Hollywood at its own game by speaking out about the industry's blatant racism. She used her new stature to move away from her typecasting as the China doll or dragon lady, and worked to reshape Asian American representation in film.Filled with stories of capricious directors and admiring costars, glamorous parties and far-flung love affairs, Not Your China Doll showcases the vibrant, radical life of a groundbreaking artist.

Andrew's back this week so he and Kevin cover an eclectic array of material including, Agatha All Along, Sawn Song, It's What's Inside, X-Men dark Phoenix, and more! Kevin kicks off the episode talking about the latest episode of Agatha and all of the new revelations it brings. There's a lot of bits to unpack in this one and Andrew hasn't seen it, so Kevin gets deep into spoilers for the episode. All in all, though, it's another solid episode that kicks of the second half of the season with a bang. Next up, Andrew takes us back in time a bit to 2021 and the film Swan Song on Apple TV+. It's a bit of a sci-fi mind bender with some very philosophical questions. With great performances from Mahershala Ali, Glenn Close, and Awkwafina, it's a great watch and definitely requires some thinking afterwards.  We come back to modern times with some Netflix and chill-ness. Well, less Chill and more Netflix. It's What's Inside is a new "horror" flick with a very Gen Z feel to it. Kevin argues the validity of the horror tag, but it's at least an interesting movie. We're unclear as to whether it's any good or not, but its at least a fascinating watch.  Andrew finishes the main topics of the show with a watch inspired by a comment from long time viewer (and even one-time guest) Jared. The question was, just how bad is X-Men: Dark Phoenix. So Andrew fell on the sword and watched it. Shockingly, he liked it more than he expected to, although it still falls under the category of being an unnecessary film. It does have it's upsides and probably isn't quite as bad as it was being labeled, but it sure isn't great, either. As always, thank you for watching. If you haven't already, don't forget to Like & Subscribe. We love new viewers! Also, leave us comments and let is know how we are doing and what we can be doing better. Growing up on the cutting edge of twenty-first-century technology gave Chu the tools he needed to make his mark at USC film school and to be discovered by Steven Spielberg, but he soon found himself struggling to understand who he was. In Viewfinder: A Memoir of Seeing and Being Seen, Chu questions what it means when your dreams collide with your circumstances - and how it's possible to succeed even when the world changes beyond all recognition.Writer, actor, comedian, and rapper Nora Lum, aka “Awkwafina,” is best known for her roles in Crazy Rich Asians (directed by Jon M. Chu), The Farewell, for which she was the first Asian American to win a Golden Globe award for best actress in a musical or comedy, and Ocean's 8. In 2020, Awkwafina wrote and executive produced the Comedy Central series Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens, in which she plays a fictionalized version of herself.

Trust me, you don't want to miss out on this one! Throwbacks, Throwdowns, and The Plunge We kicked things off with some serious nostalgia, throwing it back to some of our favorite songs and moments. The vibes were just right as we plunged into the weekend festivities. Riley, my lovely husband, was right by my side, navigating through the chaos and fun. Meet the Crew Joining us for this epic adventure were some familiar faces. Captain Groom, aka Groom to be, and the legendary SB Dubbs. It was a blast having everyone together, especially when we took over Foxwoods. If you saw a herd of people making noise and having a blast, that was definitely us! Highlights of the Bash From crazy rich Asians to hilarious moments with Awkwafina, the weekend was packed with unforgettable memories. We hit the slots, played some intense blackjack, and even had a run-in with a waitress who thought one of us was a celebrity. Spoiler alert: we weren't, but it was hilarious! Bowling, Disc Golf, and More We had an absolute blast at the High Roller Bowling Lounge with unlimited bowling and food. Kyle turned out to be a bowling ringer, and we couldn't believe our eyes! And let's not forget the disc golf at Dragonfly Disc Golf – team Even Steven showed up to play, and it was a riot. The Willwad and Jackpot Wins Oh, the Willwad! A collective pool of money for some high-stakes gambling. We had our hearts set on black at the roulette table, and while it didn't go as planned, the excitement was through the roof. Plus, there were some serious jackpot wins on Crazy Rich Asians. Talk about a rollercoaster of emotions! Plunge Picks: Donut Edition To wrap things up, we dove into our favorite donuts in a Plunge Picks segment. From Butter Crunch to French Crullers, we covered all the bases. It's a mouthwatering segment that will leave you craving a dozen (or two). Final Thoughts Whether it was the laughs, the wins, or the camaraderie, Bama Billy's Bachelor Bash was one for the books. Thanks for joining us on this wild ride, and stay tuned for more adventures. Don't forget to stay moist! Catch you next time!
