Hi folks! We can't stop/won't stop talking about Philip Seymour Hoffman movies just yet, so settle in for our chat about PSH's terrifying (yet jolly?) role in Mission: Impossible III (Abrams, 2006)! We talk about how unsettling PSH is as a villain, the movie's weird relationship with intimacy, and how PSH seamlessly switches from playing his character, Owen Davian, to playing Tom Cruise playing Davian. He climbs on things! He dangles out of a plane! He's persnickety about a li'l spill on his bespoke shirt! He really does it all in this movie, and we loved talking about it as much as we hope you'll enjoy listening to us talk about it (a lot).Don't forget to rate and review us, and reach out and say hello at thejuiciestbitspodcast@gmail.com!

“Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall.”Ethan's back, and he's getting married! It took some time to sort out the plans for this one's script, and it wasn't easy finding the director either. Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner did get there though, locking in TV showrunner JJ Abrams to co-write and helm the third in this franchise, making it his feature film debut. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our ‘Mission: Impossible' series with a look at Abrams' 2006 film Mission: Impossible III. Here's a hint at what we talk about. The film starts with a gut punch, introducing us to the villain and setting up Ethan and his wife in a position as hostages. Philip Seymour Hoffman as Owen Davian, the villain, is perfect and the star of this film, but is it too early to start having issues? As someone much more in tune with co-writer/director JJ Abrams at the time, Pete was very much in the bag for being there with Abrams as he made the leap to the big screen. Andy didn't have that connection so didn't have as much of an interest in the film (or the franchise at this point after John Woo's second entry). So does the opening work? We talk about the vibe of the film and how, because of the romance between Ethan and Julia, it feels very different. Largely, it works and moves us past Woo's mess of a film into something that feels better already. It's just unfortunate that there are still so many issues. Perhaps the largest is that it never quite feels cinematic.Regardless, it's a fun entry into the franchise and gives us plenty to dig into. We have a great time talking about it, so check it out then tune in. Ethan Hunt is back! And this time he’s on the hunt (no pun intended) for Owen Davian, a ruthless weapons dealer who is responsible for the death of Ethan’s protege. Ethan assembles a new team of IMF agents to take him down, but he’ll be putting the woman he loves at risk. There’s also a thing called the Rabbit’s Foot that amounts to nothing by the end of it. Seriously, even the movie tells you it doesn’t matter. Join Kerwin, Jason, Mugga, Bling, and Dominic as we talk South Park, the franchise finding its footing, Mortal Kombat, Volvo station wagons, JJ’s ‘Mystery Box’ method, and um…SCIENTOLOGY. This week marks a Christmas miracle! The first part of our Mission Impossible Saga retrospective. While there is always a lot to say about this great series of films, we try to break down some of our favorite aspects of them. So, for the first episode we take a look at the first three films in the series. The first film started the series with a new character, Tom Cruises Ethan Hunt, who then becomes the central figure in these action films and the de facto leader of the IMF, or Impossible Mission Force way back in 1996. The first three films take Ethan Hunt from Prague, to London, Spain, Australia, America, Italy, and finally Shanghai, China to stop threats from Jon Voight as Jim Phelps, Dougray Scott as Sean Ambrose, and Philip Seymour Hoffman as Owen Davian. And, the guys dont forget about the TV series. Lalo Schifrins incredible contribution to the television show in 1966 still stands as a strong influence on each composer who takes up a film in the series. Some of Schifrins best themes are talked about here, as well as the influence on some of the suspense cues. While the first and third are excellent action films (and one of De Palmas best, most commercial efforts for the first), the second seems to be a casualty of its time, directed by the great John Woo. For anyone wondering which films score they should start with, or even if you have questions about how they were made, take a listen. This was a difficult mission, but we wanted to go out of the year with a bang! And what better way than with the biggest action star in the world, Tom Cruise. So, Merry Christmas with the first part of the saga, and come back in the new year for the second part! You have five seconds before this message self-destructs...

EJ Pennyman (Blerd extrodinaire) and Ryan Dalton (author) discuss Ryan's favorite style of antagonist, the gentleman villain. As an example we use Moriarty from Sherlock Series 1 Ep3. For flavor we contrast against Owen Davian from Mission: Impossible 3. Be sure to check out Ryan Dalton's book, The Year of Lightning
