Ilya Salkind is one of the movie's executive producers that started the superhero genre. Superman: The Movie in 1978 taught audiences that you can believe a man can fly. Salkind's father Alexander acquired the rights to make the movie, and its sequels, Superman II and Superman III. He also exec-produced 1984's Supergirl starring Helen Slater. In this episode, Salkind gives an in-depth conversation about making those movies. He discussed casting Christopher Reeve, Margot Kidder, Gene Hackman, and the legendary Marlon Brando. He also revealed that there was a draft of a never-made Superman V. Entitled Superman Reborn, this script was performed recently as a stage reading, the audio of which will be featured in next week's podcast episode. Salkind explains how the idea of doing the reading came to be, and how he uncovered the draft of Superman Reborn. Proceeds from the reading went to the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation. “Silly old sod* (*General Zod)” The panel of peril emerge from their fortress of solitude (the toilet), wherein they have lost quite a lot of their own power (…). With their last ounce of strength, they pop themselves onto a comfy chair to watch this week's film Superman II (Richard Lester, 1980). Superman/Clark Kent (Christopher Reeve) has settled into life in Metropolis in fine style maintaining his dual identity of clumsy reporter and messiah figure with aplomb. But when he chucks a bomb into space and releases his father's arch enemies, led by General Zod (Terence Stamp), his life is about to become an absolute disaster area! Watch the trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxD8RlGnP64 ********PLOT SPOILER ALERT******** As (bad) luck would have it, Kal-El has forsaken his powers in a grand gesture of love towards the ever-spunk ace reporter Lois Lane (Margot Kidder). Needless to say, that makes planet Earth easy pickings for Zod and the gang, who are joined by snitch extraordinaire Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman) as he guides Kryptonian crims towards revenge for their imprisonment! Is the Earth doomed, or can the Man of Steel return to save the day? What did the heck panel think of this week's movie? How in all that is holy can they improve upon the villain's masterplan? Digging for Kryptonite: A Superman Fan Journey

Host Anthony Desiato and guest Dan Greenfield (13th Dimension) dig into the 1980 film SUPERMAN II, a beloved entry in the franchise despite — or perhaps because of? — being the product of two directors' visions. A combination of original director Richard Donner's more grounded, earnest approach and replacement Richard Lester's campier leanings, the movie follows Christopher Reeve's Superman as he relinquishes his powers to begin a romance with Lois Lane (Margot Kidder)...just as Kryptonian trio of Zod, Non, and Ursa escape the Phantom Zone. The specific focus of this episode is the official theatrical cut, though Anthony and Dan do discuss the long-fabled Donner Cut, which was finally released in 2006 — and offer their final word on what the "best" version of SUPERMAN II truly is.Support the show and receive exclusive podcast content at Patreon.com/AnthonyDesiato, including the spinoff podcasts BEYOND METROPOLIS and DIGGING FOR JUSTICE!Visit BCW Supplies and use promo code FSP to save 10% on your next order of comics supplies. Two twisty behind the scenes stories here. Originally, 1980's Superman II was being shot alongside the original Superman, with Richard Donner directing both. But frictions behind the scenes led to an eventual parting of the ways, a retooling of Superman II, and an eventual emergence of a second cut of the film. Toys meanwhile? From the director of Rain Man and starring Robin Williams? It should have been huge, not least because its script had been revered for over a decade. In fact, the film was supposed to have been made nearly a decade before. And when it did eventually happen? The challenge turned out to be how to sell it... The behind the scenes stories of both are told in this episode... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

This week, SepTIMEber continues as we head back to 14th century France to launch real fireballs out of real trebuchets alongside real Montreal LARPers in a rare misstep from a true master of the popcorn flick. It's 2003's Timeline, directed by Richard Donner, based on the book by Michael Crichton, and starring Paul Walker, Frances O'Connor, Gerard Butler, Billy Connolly, David Thewlis, Anna Friel, Neal McDonough, Ethan Embry, Matt Craven, Michael Sheen, Lambert Wilson, Marton Csokas and Rossif Sutherland. Two movies into this theme month and we already be down bad with Stockholm Syndrome, as the dire straits of The Time Machine made this film look like an oasis in the desert comparatively. Alas, it is a deeply flawed flick to be sure, and for the very first time one of our hosts could not make it over the finish line. Plus: a bit of listener mail makes Hayley finally explain her longstanding beef with Ted Lasso. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening to our conversation, good luck! Despite being a Paramount movie, Timeline is not available on Paramount+ but is rentable on YouTube and the Cineplex app at the time of publication. Other works discussed on this episode include Rebel Ridge, Green Room, Blue Ruin, Kinds of Kindness, Poor Things, The Favourite, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, The Emperor's New Groove, Child's Play, M3GAN, English Teacher, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Jurassic Park III, Almost Live!, Ready Player One, Backspot, I Like Movies, Sabrina Carpenter's album Short & Sweet, The Dana Carvey Show, Too Funny To Fail, 300, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Midnight in Paris, Pushing Daisies, A.I.: Artificial Intelligence, Olympus Has Fallen, Greenland, Geostorm, Superman II, The Goonies, Lethal Weapon, Maverick, Radio Flyer, The 13th Warrior, Sky Captain & The World of Tomorrow, Paycheck and The Perfect Score. We'll be back next week with a little ADHD-TPB, as SepTIMEber rolls on with a movie J Mo torrented off the internet roughly 15 years ago and never got around to actually watching: 1979's Time After Time, starring Malcolm McDowell and David Warner as H.G. Wells and Jack The Ripper respectively. Sounds like fun, right? Here's hoping! It is also not available on streaming, but once again is rentable on YouTube. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

It's been a long time since we revisited the classics with Elijah (the last one was show 174 where we talked 60's Bond). It's way past time we returned to that fascinating series and our return is SUPER. Yes, we are talking Superman The Movie (1978) starring the late, great Christopher Reeve. A film so big we also had to bring in the talent that is Niall from Movies In Focus. Not only is Niall a fan of this film, he has previously discussed it with the film's legendary director Richard Donner. So, we have three fans in Niall, Graham and Jeff and newbe Elijah who had never seen it before (but, in an interesting contrast, is a fan of Zack Synder's take on the story). The scene is set for a fascinating discussion on a superhero from yesteryear. Just what will you learn listening to this podcast: - Who else was up for the role of Superman - How Brando jokingly described how he was going to play the role to Richard Donner - Who else was in the frame to write the music which has gone on to be one of John Williams most recognisable scores - Which one of the team thinks Margot Kidder is the ultimate Lois Lane (and how all the others then disagreed) - The original endings for Superman The Movie and Superman II. A podcast which like the film is big, full of fascinating points of view and facts. Even Jeff doesn't go off on one this time! Please let us know what you think – if you enjoy it, we will bring our version of the Justice League (and Graham's super villain) back to discuss Superman II. Until then, see you at The flicks, perhaps standing in line with Elijah for the James Gunn take on the caped crusader. Bye for now.
