Hannah Wales (missflicks.com) and Sam Pay (Song by Song podcast) join Flixwatcher to review Hannah's choice Back to Black. Back to Black (2024) is a biographical film based on the life of singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse. Directed by Sam (Nowhere Boy) Taylor-Johnson it stars Marisa Abela as Amy, Jack O'Connell as Blake Fielder-Civil, Eddie Marsan as Mitch Winehouse and Lesley Manville as Cynthia Levy. Back to Black follows the standard music biopic structure and starts with Amy's love of singing in her home with her dad Mitch and grandmother Cynthia. She is quickly discovered and releases her debut album Frank. Things start going downhill when Amy meets Blake, the love of her life who also happens to be a bad influence on her. Back to Black has been heavily criticised for its representation of Mitch and Blake and failure to show Amy as anything other than a sad lonely addict. Recommendability scores reflected this and together with low scores across the other categories Back to Black scores 2.64 overall. Watch Asif Kapadia's documentary Amy instead. The bleak and nihilistic territory that this series boldly treads into, the surprising amount of homoerotic undertones in 1974, and some gripes with a divisive little filmmaker known as Zack Snyder comprise just a few of the talking points for this episode. Stephen Sackur speaks to the actor Eddie Marsan, whose ability to play troubled, sometimes violent characters has made him a staple on stage and screen. He's a relative rarity, an actor with genuine working class roots. Is there a diversity problem in the performing arts when it comes to class?

Back to Black is a 2024 biographical drama film based on the life of British singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse, played by Marisa Abela. Directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson and written by Matt Greenhalgh, the film also stars Jack O'Connell, Eddie Marsan, and Lesley Manville. Following the death of Winehouse in July 2011, several filmmakers attempted to create biopic projects but none of them progressed. In 2018, Winehouse's estate announced they had signed a deal for a film about her life and career. By July 2022, StudioCanal moved forward with production, and filming took place in London from January to April 2023. The film was released theatrically by StudioCanal in Australia on 11 April 2024, and was released in the United Kingdom on 12 April 2024. Focus Features will release the film in the United States on 17 May 2024. It received mixed reviews from critics. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/popcorn-junkies/message

Dominique plays the role of "Reef," a strong, unique and competitive person to "Dalton" (Jake Gyllenhaal) and "Billy" (Lucas Gage) in and out of the Roadhouse. Reef, who is an experienced boxer in college, peaks Dalton's interest to bring him on board and work side by side with "Billy" (Lucas Gage). This establishes a trustworthy dynamic and friendship between all three of them as you will see throughout the film. Dalton's biggest challenge is fighting off the bad seeds in the Roadhouse with the help of Reef and Billy. Roadhouse is set to premiere on March 21st, 2024 on Amazon Prime. After 35 years from its original, the remake of Roadhouse is coming to your screens, which stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Dalton and UFC superstar Conor McGregor in his first acting debut. Roadhouse, directed by the amazing, Doug Liman, who gave us films like The Bourne Identity and Edge of Tomorrow, is a reimagining of the 1989 cult film by the same name. The original Roadhouse starred the incredible and remarkable Patrick Swayze as Dalton, a renowned “cooler” with a mysterious past who is hired to take over security at a club in Jasper, Missouri, named the Double Deuce. Dalton quickly makes his presence known as an incorruptible and dangerous force able to stand toe-to-toe with any man before him. This new feature stars Jake as a former UFC fighter struggling to make ends meet. After the owner of a Florida Keys roadhouse finds him sleeping in his car, Elwood Dalton becomes a bouncer and finds himself roped into a war of outlaws and bikers (including actual mixed martial artist, turned first-time actor, Conor McGregor) and a developer determined to build a lavish resort for the rich jerks. You might recognize Dom from the hit EMMY nominated series, Ray Donovan, as series regular Damon King. The street-smart, homeless teenager with quick hands and boxing skills. After a year long run on the series, Dom acted alongside some great names like Liev Schrieber, Eddie Marsan, Jon Voight, Paula Malcomson, and many more. You can still see Dom in Brad Furman's feature, City of Lies, as Tyrell which investigates the murder of rapper Notorious B.I.G and stars some heavy hitters along with Columbus, Johnny Depp and Forrest Whitaker. He can also be seen in the Nick Richey feature film Low Low, which is currently out on Amazon Prime. As the end of 2023 approaches, Not A Bomb has decided to go out with a bang. On this week's show, we discuss not one but two bombs by the same director, Guy Ritchie. This was a rough year at the box office for Mr. Ritchie. Both Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre and Guy ritchie's The Covenant didn't make their production budget back during their theatrical run. Critics definately liked one movie over the other. And audiences, who did see the films, liked both. We couldn't take on two films in one show without some help. Nate, friend and family member, jumps on to share his thoughts on Guy Ritchie's filmography and help us decide if these two films deserve more attention. If that wasn't enough, we also reveal our 5 best and worst films of the year. Brad followed the instructions. Troy did his own thing. Nate gives everybody a shock with his take on Jackie Chan's Ride On. You are going to get a lot of recommendations from these lists! We also want to take a minute and thank all of you for an amazing year and all of the wonderful support. We are truly humbled by our community and appreciate all the feedback. Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre is directed by Guy Ritchie and stars Jason Statham, Aubrey Plaza, Josh Harnett, Cary Elwes, Bugzy Malone, Eddie Marsan, and Hugh Grant.Guy Ritchie's The Covenant is directed by Guy Ritchie and stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Dar Salim, Antony Starr, Alexander Ludwig, Emily Beecham, and Jonny Lee Miller. This eventually led to him being able to make a slightly larger film, The Disappearance of Alice Creed, in 2009, starring Gemma Arterton and Eddie Marsan. Over the next 14 years, J. wrote and directed many other films and TV shows; some highlights include the Gunpowder miniseries for BBC One/HBO and 2021's I Care a Lot for which Rosamund Pike won a Golden Globe. Marty Month rolls on, as we move backwards in Scorsese's filmography to his first film with Leo, a revenge picture set in the mean streets of New York circa 1862. It's 2002's Gangs of New York, directed by Martin Scorsese, written by Jay Cocks, and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day-Lewis, Cameron Diaz, Jim Broadbent, John C. Reilly, Liam Neeson, Brendan Gleeson, Henry Thomas, Stephen Graham and Eddie Marsan. It finds the director very much in an era where he seems to be gunning for the awards that have previously eluded him throughout his career, and to that end the movie is nominated for ten Oscars in 2003. Shockingly, it wins zero -- a shame, as the co-host writing this copy liked it quite a bit. This one comes from Hayley's collection, a Giant Tiger pick-up she's been sitting on for more than a decade. Other works discussed in this episode include The Lost Boys, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part II, Paddington, Wonka, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, Harry Potter movies, Jim Broadbent's 2001-02 run, drive-in theaters, Fleabag, Super Mario Wonder, Luigi's Mansion, and the Harbour Centre Food Court. If you'd like to watch the movie, Gangs of New York is readily available on streaming in Canada, on Netflix, Starz and Amazon Prime at the time of publication. We'll be back next Friday as Marty Month goes into overtime -- suitably -- as we consider a rare Scorsese comedy for entry into the pod canon: 1985's After Hours, starring Griffin Dunne and Rosanna Arquette. It is sadly not streaming anywhere in Canada currently, but can be rented on YouTube. Good luck finding it, and we'll see you at the movies!

Sometimes the Top 5 section of the show supports the theme of a particular week, sometimes it's used to explore a specific aspect of or contribution to cinema and other times it is the consequence of the returning Dan's failure to understand a joke at his expense. We open this week with a chat about the Top 5 Eagles. Who knows exactly how Sidey will cobble together something out of our ramblings about OPERATION FORTUNE: RUSE DE GUERRE, a title so forgettable it immediately induces retrograde amnesia. Guy Ritchie returns - did he ever really go away - with his take on a MISSION IMPOSSIBLE style globe-trotting spy caper, throwing in some inspiration from THE UNBEARABLE WEIGHT OF MASSIVE TALENT to bring us the story of Orson Fortune (Jason Statham) forced to recruit Hollywood Star Danny Francesco (Josh Hartnett) in order to stop the sale of a deadly new weapons technology. Exotic locations, decent enough action, a story which movies along at a pace, some humour of both the weird and obvious style, in theory there should be a lot to like here. Aubrey Plaza for one thing, Cary Elwes for another or a terrifically pantomime Hugh Grant who mixes his PADDINGTON 2 villain with his turn in THE GENTLEMEN to great effect. Never settling too long to get boring but unfortunately never becoming remotely interesting either such that I was forgetting it as I was watching it which explains our all over the place review. If it was released now we would almost certainly decry it as a shameless politically correct HE-MAN rip off, cynically calculated to sell toys but BRAVESTARR wasn't, it was released in 1987 and the most interesting aspect of it by far is how it was derived from traditions associated with the shamanic cultures of Native Americans and Old West stories except the horses are cybernetically augmented, the bar tenders are green-skinned, orange tashed HULK rip offs and the enemies include enormous demonic cattle and sexy snake women. We enjoyed this but was it just the nostalgia talking really? We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. If it hasn't been completely destroyed yet you can usually find us on twitter @dads_film, on Facebook Bad Dads Film Review, on email at baddadsjsy@gmail.com or on our website baddadsfilm.com. He is an actor who would be hard to typecast, but Eddie Marsan always plays the villain. “I think it has a lot to do with my upbringing”, he says, “there was a lot of violence, criminality and a lot of toxic masculinity.”  “I remember being afraid of white working class men. When you see Danny Dyer, Ray Winstone… they have an appeal to them, and I've never been able to do that. And it's because of my experience growing up within the white working class; there was always an element of fear.” Today on Ways to Change the World, Eddie Marsan joins Krishnan Guru-Murthy to discuss his chaotic upbringing, lessons in Buddhist teachings, and how actors from privileged backgrounds can find success despite being “mediocre”.  Produced by Imahn Robertson  Warning: This episode contains offensive language
