Welcome to another episode of The Video Store Podcast. This week I am recommending four movies about undercover work. That can mean a lot of things in movies. Sometimes it is a young cop trying to prove himself. Sometimes it is a guy returning to a place where everyone already knows him. Sometimes it is a job that starts out dangerous and then gets worse because the people doing it begin to lose track of who they are supposed to be.I have always liked this kind of story because it gives crime movies a built in problem right away. The person at the center has to lie, but the lie only works if part of it feels true. That is where these movies live. None of them treat undercover work as clean or especially clever. It is usually sweaty, stressful, and bad for everyone involved. No Man's Land (1987)No Man's Land stars D. B. Sweeney as a young cop who goes undercover to get inside a Porsche theft ring run by Charlie Sheen. It was directed by Peter Werner and written by Dick Wolf, which is a little interesting now because most people probably connect Wolf with Law and Order and television crime stories. Here he is working in a very eighties lane, with stolen sports cars, Los Angeles money, and Charlie Sheen doing the smooth rich kid criminal thing. This is not the deepest movie on the shelf, but it has a good setup and a lot of period texture. The car stuff helps. A crime ring built around stolen Porsches feels very much of its moment, and the movie understands the appeal of that world even while it is showing you the danger underneath it. Sweeney is good as someone who is not quite ready for the assignment, and Sheen is believable as the guy who makes bad choices look attractive. The cast also includes Randy Quaid, M. Emmet Walsh, Lara Harris, and Bill Duke. I always like when Bill Duke shows up in something, and in this week's lineup he shows up twice, once here as an actor and later as the director of Deep Cover (1992). That was not the reason I picked these four, but it is a nice bit of video store shelf connection.State of Grace (1990)State of Grace stars Sean Penn as Terry Noonan, an undercover cop who returns to Hell's Kitchen and reconnects with the people he grew up with. The problem is that those people are now tied into the Irish mob, and some of them still see him as one of their own. That makes the undercover part more personal than usual. He is not just pretending to belong. In some ways, he already did.The cast is a big part of the reason to watch this one. Ed Harris is controlled and cold as Frankie Flannery, Gary Oldman is all nerves and damage as Jackie, and Robin Wright gives the movie more emotional weight than it would have had with a thinner version of that role. John Turturro and John C. Reilly are in there too, which gives the movie one of those casts where you keep noticing people before they became more familiar. It was directed by Phil Joanou, written by Dennis McIntyre, shot by Jordan Cronenweth, and scored by Ennio Morricone. That is a lot of strong names attached to a movie that never became as famous as it probably should have. Part of the problem is timing. It came out in 1990, the same year as Goodfellas, and that is a tough shadow for any New York crime movie to stand in. State of Grace is not Goodfellas, and it is not trying to be. Rush (1991)Rush is a heavier version of the undercover story. Jason Patric and Jennifer Jason Leigh play narcotics officers working a drug case in 1970s Texas, and the movie is less interested in the mechanics of the investigation than in what the job does to them. It is about crossing lines, then having trouble finding those lines again. The movie was directed by Lili Fini Zanuck and based on Kim Wozencraft's novel, which was inspired by her own time as an undercover narcotics officer. Pete Dexter wrote the screenplay, and the cast includes Sam Elliott, Max Perlich, and Gregg Allman. That last bit always makes the movie feel slightly stranger on paper than it plays on screen, because Allman fits into the world of the movie pretty naturally.Rush is not a casual watch. Jason Patric was very good in this period at playing men who seem like they have already made peace with ruining themselves, and Jennifer Jason Leigh makes her character's slide feel believable without turning it into a big speech. Eric Clapton did the music, and the soundtrack became better known than the movie in some circles because of Tears in Heaven. The film itself is rougher and less sentimental than people might expect from that association.Deep Cover (1992)Deep Cover stars Laurence Fishburne, still credited here as Larry Fishburne, as a police officer recruited by the DEA to go undercover in Los Angeles. Jeff Goldblum plays the lawyer and criminal operator he gets close to, and Goldblum gives the movie a different kind of villain than the usual street level dealer. He is funny, polished, and awful in a way that feels very specific to him. This was directed by Bill Duke, and it is one of the best undercover crime movies of the period. It has the shape of a genre film, but it is also angry about the systems around the drug war. Fishburne is excellent because he never plays the character as a cool movie cop enjoying the danger. He looks like someone being hollowed out by the job, which makes the movie more interesting as it goes along. The title song is also a major part of the movie's history. Deep Cover was Dr. Dre's debut solo single and introduced a lot of listeners to Snoop Doggy Dogg. That song has lived on in a big way, but the movie deserves to be remembered right alongside it. It is sharp, stylish, and still feels a little mean around the edges. All four of these movies are about people who are supposed to keep their identities separate, and none of them are very good at it for long. No Man's Land (1987) gives you the flashy version with stolen cars and rich criminals. State of Grace (1990) makes it about old friends and old wounds. Rush (1991) turns the assignment into something punishing and personal. Deep Cover (1992) takes the undercover story and pushes it into something colder and more political. If I were standing behind the counter this week, these are the four I would point you toward. They are not all doing the same thing, but they belong together on the same rental stack. Undercover movies work best when the job stops being just a job, and each of these gets there in its own way. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! New episode out now! We try to go viral with the 2001 partially-animated comedy Osmosis Jones. We delve into how the live action and animation feel so disconnected tonally, discuss how we did enjoy the worldbuilding and the sheer amount of puns and visual jokes, thought the music choices were not appropriate, and share how we were also just really, really, really grossed out. We talk about why children would watch this in school, despair at the racist shorthand so common in children's media of this time, lament the parentification of Shane and wish her dad was better, and ultimately feel this was an interesting idea that was just not executed well. Katy brings up Buffy again, Carrie auditions for The Pitt, Maddy gives an interesting review of B-Dubs, and Mack has an apology to prepare for the afterlife. We also reiterate that farts are funny, learn about species-typical behavior, get excited about a hive mind, and are semi-confident in our knowledge of the human body. Listen to hear more about symptom management, Disney sequels, Laurence Fishburne, mente de gorila, the hypothalamus, mayoneggs, and scheming little brothers. And eat more fiber! An early 90s masterpiece of cinema from the legendary Bill Duke... starring Fishburne and Goldblum as they traverse the dark underbelly of drug dealing.DISCLAIMER: Language and Spoilers!DEEP COVERdir. Bill Dukestarring: Laurence Fishburne; Jeff Goldblum; Victoria Dillard
Welcome to The B-Side! Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today we talk about a truly underrated star: Laurence Fishburne! Our B-Sides include: Bad Company, Fled, Hoodlum, and Biker Boyz. Conor and guest host Mitchell Beaupre discuss Fishburne's early work, his movie star run (the mid-90s, of which three of our B-Sides are a part of!), and the roles he passed on over the years. They debate whether or not Kevin Hooks' Fled (a ‘90s take on The Defiant Ones) is worth the watch, if Oliver Parker's Othello works as a movie, and that other time Fishburne played a character based on famous gangster Bumpy Johnson (that would be Francis Ford Coppola's underrated The Cotton Club). There's a celebration of Bill Duke's directorial career (the legendary actor made Hoodlum and also Deep Cover, both starring Fishburne) and a conversation about Biker Boyz internal conflict in being a Fast & Furious movie.
Send us Fan MailA guy wakes up alone on a colony ship, stares at a sleeping stranger for a year, and then makes a choice the movie wants to frame as romance. That's the moment Passengers (2016) loses us, and we can't stop talking about why.We walk through the film's best ingredients: a slick sci-fi setting, a genuinely scary isolation setup, a talented Jennifer Lawrence, and a premise that could have powered a tense space thriller. Then we dig into the uncomfortable stuff the screenplay keeps sanding down, from consent and confinement to how quickly the story tries to move past the damage. Along the way we roast the ship's “rules” (food tiers, crew access, the one medical pod for thousands) and call out how the stakes keep evaporating right when they should spike. The most fun part is the fix: we pitch a version of Passengers that starts with Aurora waking up and lets the truth unravel slowly, turning the movie into the horror story it keeps accidentally teasing. We also hit the Laurence Fishburne section, the rushed malfunction plot, and the ending that asks you to feel warm and fuzzy after everything that came before. If you're into movie review podcasts, sci-fi movie critiques, and conversations about narrative structure, character accountability, and why some “romance” plots age terribly, queue this one up. Chris Paul and Burning Bright tackle the much-maligned middle child of the Matrix trilogy, the 2003 Wachowski sequel starring Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Hugo Weaving. Burning Bright admits he used to dismiss this one entirely, but a fresh rewatch reveals a film that is not dumb at all, just trying to wrestle with much harder ideas than the original. The guys dig into the philosophical bedrock the film sits on, including Baudrillard's Simulacra and Simulation and what it means to live in a hyperreality where signs replace the thing itself. They unpack why Zion is presented as such a hedonistic, animalistic place, and whether the Wachowskis really intended it to be the paradise worth saving. From there, they work through the Architect scene as a meditation on how systems build their own opposition into themselves, the Oracle as a mirror for the Q drops, the Merovingian as a possible fallen prior One and a Lucifer figure in the underworld of the matrix, and Neo's final choice to save Trinity as the only morally coherent rejection of the system.
We're on to part 3: The Matrix Revolutions! If you were hoping for answers to some of the questions left over from the previous installments, you may be disappointed. But, if you're looking for a film that contradicts and undermines the previous works plus an episode where we slowly go mad trying to keep the rules straight, we have just the thing for you! I Love This You Should Too is hosted by Samantha and Indy Randhawa The Matrix Revolutions is a 2003 American science fiction action film written and directed by the Wachowskis. It is the third film in The Matrix film series, shot back-to-back with The Matrix Reloaded (2003). It stars Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, Hugo Weaving and Jada Pinkett Smith. The film follows Neo and his allies as they fight to end the war between humanity and the machines permanently while opposing the rogue Agent Smith.

We continue our Matrix journey with The Matrix Reloaded. Will it live up to the hype of the classic first movie? Will we find out what The Matrix really is? Is Neo the One? What happened to all the Indian people? Can robots be smug and jealous? All these questions and more will be answered in this episode! Probably. I Love This You Should Too is hosted by Samantha and Indy Randhawa The Matrix Reloaded is a 2003 American science fiction action film written and directed by the Wachowskis. It is the sequel to The Matrix (1999) and the second installment in the Matrix film series. The film stars Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, Hugo Weaving, and Gloria Foster who reprise their roles from the previous film, with Jada Pinkett Smith joining the cast. In the film, Neo, Morpheus, and Trinity attempt to reach the Source of the Matrix to end the war as Zion prepares for an invasion from the machines.

But along with several other novels, story and essay collections, there's a somewhat satirical dystopian speculative fiction series, known collectively as the Maddadam trilogy, consisting of Oryx and Crake, the Year of the Flood and Maddaddam. I interviewed Margaret Atwood for each book in the series, and this interview, the most recent interview to date, concerned that third novel, Maddaddam. This is the last of eight interviews with Margaret Atwood conducted between the years 1989 and 2013, and has not aired in over a decade. Today, Walter Mosley is one of America's leading authors. He is best known for his series of mystery novels featuring the characters of Easy Rawlins and Mouse. To date, there are now twenty non-series novels by Walter Mosley, the most recent titled Touched, published in 2023, Along with three Fearless Jones novels, six Leonid McGill mysteries, three Socrates Fortlow books, three books in the Crosstown to Oblivion series, three books in the King Oliver series, plus two graphic novels, two plays, and six works of non-fiction. Always Outnumbered became a television film in 1998 starring Laurence Fishburne, and a TV miniseries titled The Last Days of Ptolemy Gray, based on Walter Mosley's book, starring Samuel L. Jackson, on Apple+. At present, an adaptation of his novel The Man in My Basement is in post-production. Walter Mosley's follow-up Easy Rawlins novel, Grey Dawn, was published in September 2025. The next King Oliver novel, Hanging and Burning, will be published in October 2026. A stand-alone novel, Ghalen: A Romance in Black, will be published in May, 2026. We've decided to follow the white rabbit and delve into the world of The Matrix! We kick it off this week with the first installment from 1999 and discuss shiny clothes, if we exist, office jobs, 1999 in cinema, bullet time, Keanu Reeves, saviours, philosophy, and more! I Love This You Should Too is hosted by Samantha and Indy Randhawa The Matrix is a 1999 science fiction action film written and directed by the Wachowskis. The first installment in the Matrix film series, it stars Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, Hugo Weaving, and Joe Pantoliano. It depicts a dystopian future in which humanity is unknowingly trapped inside the Matrix, a simulated reality created by intelligent machines. The plot follows the computer hacker Neo, who is recruited by Morpheus into a rebellion against the machines.
Tom Cruise is at an engagement party pretending to be normal, which mostly involves making drinks, studying "traffic patterns", and quietly alarming everyone in the room. Within minutes, he's thrown all the ice into the backyard, taken a mysterious call, and disappeared to Berlin before anyone can question the growing puddle on the lawn. His fiancée accepts this without hesitation, which is honestly a great starting point for everyone here. This is J.J. Abrams' $150 million debut, handed to him because Tom Cruise watched Alias at 2 a.m. and trusted the vibes. The result is a movie powered less by logic and more by momentum counterbalanced by Philip Seymour Hoffman calmly counting to ten. Around that, we sit back and enjoy the spectacle: Vatican break-ins, exploding highways, helicopter chases, and an aggressively unexplained Rabbit's Foot. Nick, Elise, and Anthony sort through the chaos, from defribulated brain bombs, to Ving Rhames operating rollerball sniper cannons, to Laurence Fishburne delivering an all-time GOATed Ted Talk on the power of rehetorical questions. We are all Julia today, as we go from trusting fiancée to action-ready medic in about forty-eight hours, and nobody stops to process any of it. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to not throw the party ice in the yard. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0317919/

In the film, criminal mastermind Lex Luthor manipulates Batman into a preemptive battle with Superman, whom Luthor is obsessed with destroying. The film stars Ben Affleck as Batman and Henry Cavill as Superman, alongside an ensemble cast including Amy Adams, Jesse Eisenberg, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, Jeremy Irons, Holly Hunter, and Gal Gadot. By now, you're no doubt tired of hearing us ramble about season four. So, in this week's episode, it's Producer Sean who does it! We finally got our maestro of Malcontent Media to marathon all eight episodes, and he has some thoughts about…well, pretty much all of it. Liamralt! Larry Fish! Vilgefortz's evil minions! Sex montages! And as if that's not enough, it all happens over a bottle of Proof of Life, a strangely goth non-alcoholic whiskey that we mix up into some mean mocktails. It's a season four celebration that's low on ABV, high on attitude and packed with new perspective. It might not always be clear or coherent perspective, but it's new!

I love the smell of comedy history podcasts in the morning. It smells like hilarity. This week we're watching 1979s Apocalypse Now Redux. This episode is all about talking about the Vietnam War as well as the journey that inspired the original Heart of Darkness Novella to be made. This movie stars Martin Sheen, Marlon Brando, Laurence Fishburne and was directed by Francis Ford Coppola! Just listen to the pod, Lance. It's a good pod, and I like it. You know how hard it is to find a pod you like. Come listen and enjoy with us! BK's Blacklist is back, and this time TeaRon and BK revisit one of the most provocative and unsettling films in Black cinema history: John Singleton's Higher Learning.Released over 30 years ago, this controversial cult classic feels disturbingly more relevant today. Set on the fictional Columbus University campus, Higher Learning traps America's most volatile social issues inside a pressure cooker—where race, masculinity, identity, white supremacy, patriarchy, and violence collide with devastating consequences. The film features early performances from future Black Hollywood heavyweights and cultural icons including Omar Epps, Ice Cube, Tyra Banks, Regina King, Laurence Fishburne, Busta Rhymes, alongside Kristy Swanson and Jennifer Connelly. Each character represents a different path through college life, exposing how ideology, insecurity, and power can radicalize young minds.TeaRon and BK unpack Singleton's bold vision, debate whether the film still holds up, and confront the uncomfortable truth at its core: the more things change, the more they stay the same.Does Higher Learning still hit too close to home in today's America—or was it always meant to be a warning we ignored?––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––Follow Us:IG: @tearonworld / @bkwitda4fa4TT: @tearon__ / @bkgostupidFB: facebook.com/UbiquitousBlacksTHRD: @ubiquitousblacks––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––About UBIQUITOUS BLACKS Podcast:Ubiquitous Blacks is an internationally focused podcast that explores similarities and differences of the Black/African diaspora experiences around the world. Dagger is an independent, creatively wired, strategy obsessed brand building agency based in Atlanta, Georgia. It's one of Ad Age Best Places to Work and has been named 4x to Adweek's 100 Fastest Growing Agencies. On this episode I sat down with the agency's Chief Creative officer, Al Patton, and Head of Dagger Originals, Lance Krall to talk about the state of Dagger, Advertising in Atlanta, and more. About our Guests: AL PATTON, CHIEF CREATIVE OFFICER Al joined as Chief Creative Officer in February of 2019 and is responsible for driving the creative vision of the agency. He came to us from 22Squared, where for just under three years he served as Executive Creative Director and oversaw all creative output for the agency's Atlanta headquarters. Prior to that, Al spent eighteen years at top creative agencies in New York, the final ten of which at R/GA where he was Executive Creative Director on the agency's Nike and Samsung accounts. His resume also includes stints at Deutsch, FCB, Digitas and Tribal, where he led teams working on such global brands as American Express, Reebok, Kraft, Chase and AT&T. Al's work has been a mainstay at the annual creative award shows, having taken home top honors at Cannes Lions, CLIO, One Show, London International Awards, Webby Awards and the Effies. LANCE KRALL, HEAD OF DAGGER ORIGINALS Most recently known for his role as "Dad" to his two children, Lance previously worked on other less demanding projects, such as creating and starring in Spike TV's "The Lance Krall Show," and Vh1's "Free Radio," writing on "Breaking In," "Last Man Standing," and "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," Co-Executive Producing TruTV's unscripted comedy, "Fameless," and penning the William H Macy helmed feature film, "The Layover." As an Executive Producer, Lance has had the pleasure of developing television alongside some of the industry's top players, including Jerry Bruckheimer, Doug Robinson, Drew Barrymore, Laurence Fishburne, and Eric Tannenbaum. We hope you brought your appetite…for drunken discussion! We're back with our first episode of 2026, where we're diving into Season 4's celebration of camping out (both literally and figuratively) and baring your soul over a bowl of fish soup. Accompanied by a bottle of True Story Finished Bourbon, we share some surprisingly strong opinions about the episode's infamous musical interlude, declare our undying love for random nonsense, and explain how while he may no longer drink blood, Regis clearly has no problem drinking Marvel's milkshake. We also debate whether sick = sexy when it comes to Jaskier, formally declare that Milva's the smartest person in the room and actually agree on a Kaer Moron for once. It's a tasty, tantalizing talk about the most mouthwatering episode of the season that's guaranteed to leave you hungry for everything to come. (Note to self: In the future, don't write these episode descriptions before you've had dinner.)

World War, round one. I want to live through this. If I can't be the guy behind the machine gun, let's see. Rifle. BAR's too heavy. SMLE. ten rounds trumps five, and can be, with practice, fired fast. Sights not as good as the Mk IV, but by the time we get to wwii, there are other options. Hand gun: good old 1911. Subgun -- was the Thompson available yet? Shotgun: not expert at all, but a 12 gauge pump with a big bayonet seems like a good thing to have on hand. Trench Broom. I think I'd also want a big old Bowie style knife as well. World War, round two, the rematch. handgun. More good options by then, but I think I'll stick with the 1911, this time in A1 configuration. Rifle, Garand, seeing as I probably couldn't get a Sturmgewehr. Subgun -- "Grease Gun" .45. Shotgun -- whatever 12 gauge pump is available, bayonet not needed, as we're not doing trench warfare. Big Bowie knife again -- too useful, less likely to be used in combat. Alternate history what if: What if low residue smokeless powder had been developed and introduced 50 years earlier, in the 1840s instead of the 1890s. Would we have seen early introduction of auto loading firearms, or would revolvers and manual repeaters continue to dominate into the 20th century? I suspect "yes, eventually, but not an immediate slamdunk." It would have made the US Civil War interesting. —-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Listener Russell: Hi gents, There is one movie where the gun mistakes bother me so badly. It's the movie Standoff staring Laurence Fishburne and Thomas Jane. There is a scene where they discuss the attributes of each other's weapon. Fishburne's character brags about being armed with a 45. The gun is a Beretta 92! Jane's character is armed with a single shot shotgun in 20ga. Which Fishburne's character says isn't very powerful and has no range. Funny… The majority of the movie takes place in a house. Even worse this “20ga” is being loaded with RED shells. This scene ruined the entire movie for me. If they would have left out or changed the dialogue about the guns. Would have been a totally decent enough movie. Keep the shows coming, Russell —---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Listener Keith: Was watching The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Takes place in the Civil War. Lots of metallic cartridge guns. Not even hiding it. Tuco shoots from the bathtub. Not going to do that with black powder. Also, Blondie unloaded Tuco's gun before the showdown. The Army has Gatling guns. I think they were 45/70s. —------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Listener David: WW1 Loadout: I figure the best way is to split these over multiple emails. So sorry if that makes for a ton of reading! I am assuming logistics for all the crazy calibers are all solved. My main rifle is an M1917 Enfield, officially the "United States Rifle, cal .30, Model of 1917". Guess the guys got paid by the character to name stuff back then. For a carbine-ish choice, I am picking the Short Magazine fed Lee Enfield Mark 3. That just seems like a super handy gun to have inside cramped trenches. My shotgun is an M1897 trench gun with a sword bayonet. If the buckshot doesn't do the trick, I get spear practice (you know, as a little treat.) The machine gun splits into light and heavy. For light, I am picking the Madsen light machine gun and the Gatling gun gets the nod for heavy work. My pistol choice is nothing fancy, the P08 Luger, WW2 Loadout: Here is my idea for the WW2 load out.Same as before, magic logistics mean plenty of parts and ammo. My WW2 rifle is the M1941 Johnson rifle. Mainly because the Garand is too heavy for anyone to choose on purpose to schlep around. I am swapping a submachine gun for the carbine. That would be the PPSh-41 because I am achieving peace through overwhelming rate of fire. My shotgun is the Browning Auto 5. It's WW2, why are we racking slides like unwashed peasants? Machine gun again gets split into light and heavy. Light this time is the M1918 Browning Automatic Rifle, Heavy duty goes to the venerable M2 Browning because to Hell with you and whatever you are hiding behind! My sidearm choice is the Roth-Steyr M1907. It has more rounds than the 1911 and P38, it gets bonus points for looking weird also! (We have the rest of your emails David, but we want to save them for a future show when we have more entries!) —---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Xander– WWII loadout: USS Nimitz (in honor of December 7) Or: Liberator pistol, Mauser C96 pistol, Mauser Karabiner rifle Wrap Up: Don't forget to shop Brownells using our affiliate link! Kim Baker has lived an iconic life. From her first photoshoot at 13 years old to being managed by Bethann Hardisson, she divided her time between breaking down barriers and partying with fashion legends. In this episode, Kim walks us through the beginning of her fashion career and how her mother instilled unshakeable confidence in her by detailing the beauty of Black history. Kim offers us a peek into the highs and lows of the modeling industry in the 1980s, namely, early sexual harassment and stringent expectations about her body and weight. Kim doesn't hold back when it comes to sharing her experiences with other iconic cultural figures, including meeting Jean Michel Basquiat and going into labor at Grace Jones' birthday party at Studio 54. Kim doesn't hold back when it comes to other difficult experiences, like how a whirlwind romance led to her facing a 65-year prison sentence. But Kim is no stranger to reinvention. She pioneered plus-size modeling in the 1990s, stepped behind the camera and became a makeup artist, and worked with Bobbi Brown for 14 years as one of her earliest employees. Kim's career leveled up again when she accepted an opportunity to do glam for Tom Cruise and Laurence Fishburne. She realized a prediction she made at the age of nine and launched her own makeup line, Glamazon Beauty, in 2016. Kim's transparency about her career, motherhood, and her faith illuminates why she has remained a staple in the beauty and fashion scene. This is our final film review of Season 7, and we decided to go out with a bang: a bizarre labor of love that provokes as much confusion as it does admiration. A film fifty years in the making, equal parts science fiction, political allegory, and personal manifesto from one of the greatest living directors. It's proof that some people still haven't processed 9/11, and quite possibly the only place you'll see an Asian Elvis impersonator singing “America the Beautiful.” It's Megalopolis, written, directed, produced, and funded by the legendary Francis Ford Coppola.Check us out on...Twitter @TSMoviePodFacebook: Time SensitiveInstagram: @timesensitivepodcastGrab some Merch at TeePublicBig Heads Media
Actor Stephan James (Homecoming, If Beale Street Could Talk) has made a name for himself playing major historical figures like runner Jesse Owens in “Race” and civil rights activist John Lewis in “Selma.” After working with legends like Julia Roberts and Laurence Fishburne, Stephan wanted to come back to his community in Canada and share his success. Earlier this year, Tom Power caught up with Stephan in front of a live audience to talk about his career and his plans to uplift young Black creatives.
Frank White (Christopher Walken) is a drug kingpin who just got out of prison and is eager to restart his criminal enterprise with his long-term lietenant Jimmy Jump (Laurence Fishburne) helping to lead the way. And off the bat, he goes hard after every rival gang and starts to see success.....only there's crew of NYPD cops who are after him lead by Roy Bishop (Victor Argo) and they're getting close. And what results is a hyper-violent crime drama featuring an all-star cast including David Caruso, Wesley Snipes, Giancarlo Esposito, and Steve Buscemi. Directed by New York legend and long-timer indie auteur Abel Ferrara (Bad Lieutenant, Ms. 45), this came out in the Fall of 1990 amidst a glut of more celebrated gangster movies (Goodfellas, Miller's Crossing, New Jack City) so it got lost in the shuffle but it has since gone on to develop a devoted cult following. So let's head back to the mean streets of late '80's New York and find out....who becomes The King! “Adrian Brody is too good of an actor to be in a B-movie like this.” - Andrew On this week's episode, we're chatting about the outrageously late sequel, Predators! The internet continues its chaotic march, with a TikTok deal potentially happening (for real this time, maybe), while LimeWire bought the Fyre Fest brand, because more viruses are always a great idea. Corporate America is going full AI-bro with massive layoffs at Fiverr, xAI, and Google, while OpenAI reveals people are using ChatGPT for pretty much everything but coding. Age verification is coming to apps and online services in California and New York, because apparently, teenagers need protection (after the fact). Elsewhere, nudists have declared war on SpaceX over rocket launches, and fans are ditching Elon since he started being so insufferable; even a Tesla engineer quit and roasted him spectacularly, all while NHTSA investigates Tesla's fire-prone door handles. In the world of entertainment, we're catching up on Wednesday and Foundation S3 (just pretend the books never existed, your brain will be rewired!), and Upload wrapped up its truncated season nicely. The 2003 Freaky Friday was a fun, nostalgic trip through early 2000s L.A., reminding us of all the cool places that are now just... gone. Alien: Earth and Gen V S2 are on our watchlist, and we'll see if Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4 lives up to its promise. The Witcher S4, featuring Liam Hemsworth as Geralt (aka the Dick Switch), drops in October, with Laurence Fishburne making it somewhat palatable. The Lilith Fair documentary is peak 90s, and Meta's latest dystopian product was so bad it made the Cybertruck demo look good. Apple's new AI features are cool, but the iOS 26 "liquid glass" update and its awful crossfade feature are less so; also, meditation apparently has a dark side, but binaural beats might just make you rave. Publishers Clearing House's bankruptcy means "forever" winners won't get paid (always take the lump sum!); international sellers are charging absurd shipping to avoid American buyers; and the deepfake Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kills Darth Maul (Live Action) is surprisingly good.Steve Martin's Born Standing Up is still great life advice, and the Carrot App the Musical is, against all odds, amazing. Robert Redford has sadly passed, a legend who gave us Sneakers, and L.A.'s own Clayton Kershaw is retiring at the end of the season, a true one-team legend who deserves all the accolades.Sponsors:MasterClass - Right now, our listeners get an additional 15% off any annual membership at MASTERCLASS.com/GRUMPYOLDGEEKS.
