Italian tennis player
POPULARITY
Former world No.33 Paolo Lorenzi, who retired from the tour in 2021, is now the Italian Open tournament director. Having trained and competed with Jannik Sinner and Matteo Berrettini in his playing career, Lorenzi has witnessed first-hand the spectacular rise of Italian tennis, and believes the best is yet to come. He sits down with Ursin Caderas at the Foro Italico in Rome to discuss Sinner's enormous popularity, and how the Australian Open 2024 champion could soon not only be world No.1, but potentially one of 10 Italian men ranked inside the world's top 50 players. Mike here: There are few people that I respect more than Paolo Lorenzi. When I heard that he had made his decision to retire last week here in New York, I can say I was genuinely saddened by the news, but am so, so thrilled that Paolo is moving on to the next phase of his life. He is one of the kindest souls off the court, and one of the more ferocious competitors I've ever witnessed. We discuss this dichotomy, and so much more, on this week's BTRPod, with a BONUS EPISODE TOMORROW! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Former World No.5 turned Amazon Prime Video UK pundit Daniela Hantuchova joins David and Catherine to review an eventful opening day at the US Open. For the first time in the tournament’s history, the women’s top seed lost in the first round. Where did it all go wrong for Simona Halep against Kaia Kanepi? Why was there no real fightback? Has she become over-reliant on Darren Cahill? Hantuchova thinks she might still need time to recover from the high of winning at Roland Garros. From a British perspective it was a pretty chaotic day, with Andy Murray, Kyle Edmund and Heather Watson all playing at the same time.Murray came from a set down to defeat James Duckworth, with his movement improving steadily throughout the match. Hantuchova gives an insight into what it’s like to return from injury, and draws a fascinating comparison between Halep’s on-court negativity and Murray’s emotional ramblings.Edmund, meanwhile, broke down physically in a four-set loss to Paolo Lorenzi. What happened?Elsewhere, Stan Wawrinka eased past Grigor Dimitrov. Nobody was surprised by the result, but the 6-3, 6-2, 7-5 scoreline was alarmingly lop-sided. Why is Dimitrov struggling so much in 2018? Does he need to become less ‘stubborn’?In the night session, Serena's dress and Nadal's sleeveless top caught the eye.David and Catherine will be back with daily shows throughout the US Open fortnight. The Tennis Podcast is produced in association with the Telegraph and sponsored by Amazon Prime Video, the new home of the US Open in the UK. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

One point away from the biggest win of his life, third round prize money already in his pocket, and finally fulfilling his obvious promise, Dan Evans was the talk of the town in New York on Saturday, even though he did eventually go down. Catherine Whitaker (Eurosport), David Law (BBC 5 Live) and Simon Briggs (Telegraph) assembled for their daily Tennis Podcast chat at Flushing Meadows, to review the day, and the 25 year old from Birmingham was the man they started with. Where did his match with Stan Wawrinka turn? How would he take the defeat, and what about his future? It’s all discussed on the latest show, and we hear from Evans himself, talking about the moment his attitude changed for the better off the court when he was ranked 772 in the world. The podcast team also review the performances of the Williams sisters in reaching the last 16, the trials and tribulations of Andy Murray in edging out Paolo Lorenzi of Italy, and they look ahead to a stunning Sunday. The first few rounds of the U.S. Open are in the books, and most of the stars have advanced. But they've advanced past the tennis cavalry of the sport--lovingly known by our guest Andrew as the Foot Soldiers of Tennis. Paolo Lorenzi has become the prototype for such effort without reward--until now. As he's made it into the third round of the U.S. Open, we'd thought it would be a fitting time to pay tribute. And as always, thanks for liking us on Facebook (leave comments on the episode thread!), following us on Twitter (discuss this episode with hashtag #NCR165b!), and subscribing/reviewing on iTunes or whatever your podcasting app/platform of choice may be.
Andy Murray has spent 11 years reaching the second week of Grand Slam tournaments, but he has never had the company of a fellow British singles player. That is about to change, assuming Murray makes it through against Paolo Lorenzi today. The Tennis Podcast team convened to discuss the performance from Kyle Edmund, who showed maturity and mental strength to go with his power and precision from the baseline. The British player beat John Isner 7-6 in the fourth set. Could he even trouble the World Number One Novak Djokovic in the last 16? Is Djokovic a little undercooked after his last two opponents withdrew because of injury? Or is Edmund going to be schooled by one of the greatest tennis players of all time? Tennis Podcast presenters Catherine Whitaker (Eurosport) and David Law (BBC 5 Live) give their views on the latest show. They also discuss the extraordinary through-the-legs lob that Rafael Nadal hit to set up match point in his round three match, the comeback win of Madison...
