In S2 E1 we discuss BREAKING NEWS about Simona Halep's retirement, the Davis Cup drama between Cristian Garin and ZZ Bergs, and the lackluster and poorly kitted Australian Open highlighted by media antics more than on-court action.
Tennis, stop. Give us a minute, my God. The chaotic February schedule gives us a first-time 1000 title winner (Anisimova), a first-time ATP titlist (Fonseca), Ostapenko's fifth unanswered defeat of Swiatek, and Bencic winning a big title soon after her return from maternity leave. While trying to keep track of tennis results, we also saw the resolution of the Sinner's WADA appeal, the conclusion of the WTA's investigation into Stefano Vukov, and Simona Halep's retirement. 01:40 Anisimova wins Doha, Penko turns her year around 5:35 Fonseca's first title, Schwartzman's swan song, and will the South American swing go hardcourt? 11:40 Alejandro, por qué??? 15:10 Last week: Bencic, Alcaraz, Shapo 19:40 The Sinner Agreement 31:05 US Open makes mixed doubles a glorified exhibition 40:55 Compton's most famous daughter 47:05 Rybakina's coach Vukov suspended for a year 53:30 Simona Halep retires 62:20 We don't need straight men's takes on which men are hot
Ben and Tumaini reconvene for the first time back in their cold home hemisphere to discuss tennis happenings in February, which involve several complex stories. First, we discussed the late-breaking news of Stefano Vukov receiving a one-year ban from the WTA, and the details that were reported by The Athletic about the WTA's reasons. Is this new proactive approach correct? Second we discuss the retirement announcement of Simona Halep, whose legacy became much more complicated in the last few years. How should her career be remembered? We then cover the many changes happening to the August schedule, including the elongated Canada and Cincinnati events, the US Open's Sunday start, and then mostly the U.S. Open's radical revamp of the mixed doubles event. After some results chats and thank yous, we end with a discussion of Serena at the Super Bowl and our memories of her time with Drake. Thank you for listening! Our Patreon is back up and running to ensure NCR keeps going and stays ad-free, and we hope you can join in supporting NCR! And we especially thank our GOAT backers: Pam Shriver and J. O'D. And please check out Ben's new writing home, Bounces! And Tumaini's work at The Guardian!
On this week's episode of Served with Andy Roddick, Andy is joined by Jon Wertheim for a quick Racket Rundown, presented by Wilson, to discuss Alcaraz, Bencic, and more. Then, Andy and Jon sit down with US Open Tournament Director Stacey Allaster and Eric Butorac, Senior Director of Player Relations & Business Development, to discuss the newly announced changes for this year's US Open Mixed Doubles event. They explore why this decision was made, how it impacts other tournaments and tennis culture, and their vision for the sport's continued evolution. Read US Open Mixed Doubles Press Release here: https://www.usopen.org/en_US/news/articles/2025-02-11/2025_us_open_mixed_doubles_championship_takes_the_spotlight.html Finally, we have a special segment where Social Sophie and Kim Clijsters take over the show—giving Andy the boot! Sophie and Kim dive into the controversy surrounding the low-quality tennis balls players have been complaining about. Kim also shares her journey from picking up a racket to facing Serena Williams in her first Grand Slam. Tennis meets Super Bowl! It's been another memorable week on and off the tennis circuit as hot off the press Serena Williams graced all our TV screens crip walking (!) to Kendrik Lamar at the Super Bowl Halftime Show. Back on the tour, Carlos Alcaraz caught a cold as well as his first ever indoor hard court title with a win in Rotterdam to equal Rafael Nadal, and Belinda Bencic enjoying another successful week in Abu Dhabi, this time as a Mother, to win her 9th career title in just her fourth event back from maternity leave.Meanwhile, Denis Shapovalov stormed to the Dallas Open title, defeating 3 Top 10 players en route and reminding us all of his immense talents, whilst Anastasia Potapova clinched the Translyvania Open, an event at which we saw one of the most successful WTA players of the 2010s, Simona Halep, retire.Chris also tests Kim and Joel's knowledge of indoor Champions with a new Par for The Courts, and they discuss all the recent tennis x Super Bowl madness on Super Bowl Sunday with the aforementioned Serena Williams popping up plus a Roger Federer TV ad spot with 'Elmo' from Sesame Street.SOCIALSFollow us on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, plus email the show tennisweeklypod@gmail.com.MERCHPurchase Tennis Weekly Merch through our Etsy store including limited edition designs by Krippa Design where all proceeds go towards the podcast so we can keep doing what we do!REVIEWS***Please take a moment to rate and review the show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your pods. On March 5, the Court of Arbitration for Sport rendered its decision on the Simona Halep appeal: the doping was not intentional and the suspension was reduced to 9 months, time long since served. It's the welcome end to a saga that has dragged on and shaken trust in the sport's anti-doping institutions. But, we're left with ever more questions: Why were the conclusions of the ITIA and CAS so starkly different? What of the biological passport results? What took so long? Why are tennis players often so successful at CAS? Aside from the Halep news, we talk about the early happenings at Indian Wells, the cancellation of Netflix's Break Point, the ATP's annual awkward International Women's Day video, and more. 01:40 CAS accepts Simona's contamination defense and throws out biological passport charge 07:50 Why are the conclusions of ITIA and CAS so vastly different? 15:00 Comparisons to Sharapova, the question of “innocence” 25:00 So where are the “real” dopers? 35:30 Indian Wells: withdrawals, Sinner's win streak, Kerber-Woz revival 45:15 Break Point is over: what went wrong? 50:40 Ruby amends his apology, thanks to Sofya Tartakova 51:50 A (very) slight improvement in the ATP's Women's Day video!

Indian Wells is underway but it was a news-heavy week in the tennis world and Catherine, David and Matt begin by discussing the fact that Simona Halep can return to tennis after CAS reduced her suspension to 9 months. Why did CAS come to such a different conclusion to the ITIA? How do we feel about tennis' anti-doping system in light of this case? And what do we make of Halep receiving a wildcard to play Miami? Elsewhere, there's chat about Netflix not renewing Break Point for season three, a possible WTA grass court event at The Queen's Club, and the main stories from Indian Wells so far. We cover the withdrawals of Rafael Nadal and Elena Rybakina, Carlos Alcaraz's improved form, whether anyone can beat Jannik Sinner, Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka's incredible comebacks, a Last 16 clash between Caroline Wozniacki and Angelique Kerber, and Iga Swiatek redoing her Australian Open experience and making it better. Ben and Tumaini had a lot to catch up on this week, so we are splitting this episode into two parts. The first part, here, begins with the Court of Arbitration for Sport issuing a radical reversal of the first decision on Simona Halep's positive test, which means Halep can return to tour immediately. We don't have all the answers yet, but what does the dramatic disparity between the two decisions say about the dysfunction of the tennis anti-doping system? In the second part of this episode, we discuss Andrey Rublev getting defaulted from his semifinal in Dubai for berating a line judge, and how that moment should be instructive. Thanks for listening!
