This week Erik and Aidan discuss an eventful week in Montpellier, which had a lot going on for a relatively small ATP 250 tournament. FAA returned to action with a dominant tournament victory after a disappointing first round loss in Australia. Arthur Fils had his first tournament back after getting injured last summer, and Stan Wawrinka collected a win before falling to the eventual tournament champion. The draw also featured 16-year old Moise Kouame, who showed flashes of being the next tennis star. Presentatie: Robert Denneman

On this week's episode of The Business of Watches, we head to Nidau, Switzerland, where we sit down with Ben Küffer, the young Chief Executive Officer of family-owned watch brand Norqain. It's a frank discussion of the challenges of starting a brand and creating a signature watch–the Norqain Wild One–at a time when the industry is crowded with competitors, and it's tough to stand out. We focus on Norqain's unique strategy of recruiting former and current professional athletes as not only brand representatives, but also investors and executives. The big news is Norqain's deal to be the official luxury timepiece of the National Hockey League, an agreement guided by former NHLer and Norqain co-founder Mark Streit with some help from superstar and company investor Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins. We also discuss the surprise success of Norqain's 'Enjoy Life' Freedom 60 chronograph that struck a chord with consumers with its ice cream-themed colors and endorsement by Mark Wahlberg to become the brand's top-selling watch. Despite that success, and perhaps in a bid to play the scarcity card, Norqain now says it plans to discontinue the model, at least for now. But first, we're joined by TanTan Wang, who is back from Colorado, and some quality time with Oris's new Big Crown Pointer Date 'Bullseye.' We also talk about the recent headlines in the watch world, including the proposed sale of Richemont's Baume & Mercier to Italy's Damiani Group, as well as Omega's very commercial 300M diver, which it is launching for the Milano Cortina Winter Games. It’s a sad day, everyone. Stan Wawrinka’s glorious run has come to an end and no, we’re not crying, you are. To honour the great man, we crack a few cold (lukewarm) ones and reminisce about the good old days. We dive headfirst into all the drama from the last 24 hours, including Jannik Sinner’s case of the cramps, Novak Djokovic’s very close call, and Naomi Osaka’s big announcement. Not to be outdone, Lizzy (@lizzyhoo) makes an announcement of her own and nearly brings Mike (@comedymikegoldstein) to tears. And finally, for anyone getting sick of the ridiculous run of guests we’ve been on, bad luck. We’ve got another one. The one and only Naomi Osaka. 10-time men's champion Novak Djokovic is through to round four at the Australian Tennis Open after a straight sets win in Melbourne. Also advancing in the men's draw on night seven were 12th seed Casper Ruud and ninth seed Taylor Fritz - who ended the Australian Open career of 2014 champion Stan Wawrinka in four sets. In the women's draw - second seed Iga Swiatek and fifth seed Elena Rybakina went through, but two-time champion Naomi Osaka withdrew from her round three match - citing an abdominal injury linked to body changes from her pregnancy. Tennis correspondent Dave Worsley joined Piney to recap the action. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Catherine, David and Matt catch up at the end of a day of scorching heat in Melbourne as Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic both survived very different scares. Part one - Men's results. We cover all the drama of Sinner's victory against Eliot Spizzirri as the Italian cramped badly before the closing of the roof came to his rescue. What can Sinner do to avoid these situations? As for Djokovic, just how close did he come to being disqualified for nearly hitting a ball kid? Plus, Lorenzo Musetti beats Tomas Machac in five and Stan Wawrinka says goodbye to the Australian Open in fitting fashion. Part two (41:48) - Women's Results. We discuss Iga Swiatek's impressive third set reset against Anna Kalinskaya, Naomi Osaka's sad withdrawal, a dominant display from Amanda Anisimova, and the upcoming match between Jessica Pegula and Madison Keys. Part three (58:40) - Sensation of the day and a thrilling Day 8 lineup. Before anything else, our thoughts this week are firmly with teh family of Damian Kust. Damian was a cherished and passionate member of the tennis community whom we lost at the age of just 26. His work covering the Challenger Tour set him apart, but his passion and knowledge was what really made him shine. RIP Damian. Details of his funeral and donations to the foundation his parents have chosen are here: https://x.com/damiankust/status/2009644081207709969 It always feels utterly empty to follow such profoundly sad news with the mundanity of the week's tennis news. Here is what else Calvin Betton, James Gray and George Bellshaw discussed this week... Novak Djokovic has pulled out of Adelaide, his only planned warm-up for the Australian Open, saying he is not physically ready for the challenge Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz have not played an ATP event yet this year either, but were busy playing an indoor practice match in front of 15,000 people in Seoul, South Korea. Poland FINALLY won the United Cup, Hubert Hurkacz gaining redemption for spurning two championship points against Alexander Zverev in 2024, beating the German en route to leading his nation to victory... ...but Iga Swiatek's form was far from impressive, and it was Katarzyna Kawa and Jan Zielinski, Luke Johnson's new partner, who were instrumental in securing the title PLUS: No Australian Open wildcard for Nick Kyrgios; there is one for Stan Wawrinka; titles for Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Bublik, Aryna Sabalenka and Elina Svitolina; Emma Raducanu's return; and OF COURSE *that* wildcard in Nairobi.
