In this final episode of our podcast series on the changing climate, this mountainous country is seeing extreme temperature fluctuations, landslides and air pollution, endangering communities and impacting healthcare. But, there are some lessons around adaptation, as our guests who work or have volunteered in Nepal explain. Dr Bernadette O'Hare hosts a fascinating and wide-ranging conversation with Dr Jamun Singh, a Nepalese paediatrician, and Dr Rashmi D'Souza, a UK-based paediatrician and Heather Watson, a UK-based paediatric nurse, who volunteered with Dr Singh in our Global Links programme. Dr Singh gives a powerful account of the dramatic effects climate change is having in Nepal, from extreme temperature fluctuations to the indirect dangers posed by cooking on indoor fires. He highlights the impact of floods, which have triggered landslides, further endangering communities and disrupting daily life. Despite these challenges, Dr Singh shares how Nepal is adapting, including changing school schedules to cope with climate extremes and harnessing the country's hydropower potential as a sustainable energy source. In a separate conversation, Bernadette caught up with Dr Camilla Kingdon in her last weeks as RCPCH President to find out more about the impacts of air pollution, as well as find out about her experiences visiting Nepal over the years. This episode not only sheds light on the specific challenges faced by children in Nepal due to climate change but also underscores the importance of global cooperation and local adaptation strategies. Tune in to hear these compelling stories and learn how communities are striving to protect their children and future in the face of a rapidly changing environment. In recognition of Black History Month in the UK, Black Spin Global got to record a special episode at Wimbledon to showcase the achievements of black tennis players at SW19 from the past to the present. Althea Gibson, the first black player (male or female) to win a Grand Slam; Arthur Ashe, the last black man to reach world No 1; storied sisters Venus and Serena Williams; father and son duo Bryan and Ben Shelton; teenage phenom Coco Gauff and doubles champions Taylor Townsend and Heather Watson are all spotlighted in this one-off episode. For daily tennis updates: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/blackspinglobal Twitter: https://twitter.com/BlackSpinGlobal
Coco Gauff goes down to Emma Navarro again, but this time in three. The 2023 champion's serve deserted her at crucial times and she spoke openly about getting “other opinions” to help remedy the issue. Frances Tiafoe put on another show under the lights, fending off a comeback by the in-form Australian Alexei Popyrin in four quality sets. Big Foe is now looking forward to his third consecutive quarter-final in New York where ninth seed Grigor Dimitrov awaits. In the junior competition, Akasha Urhobo, Tyra Grant, Christasha McNeil and Matthew Forbes all secured first-round wins. And in women's doubles, Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova ousted Heather Watson and Asia Muhammad. Shout out to Anastaia from Ground Pass Pod for joining us.
Natalie Sawyer rounds up all the action from Day 6 of The Olympics from Paris. It was Quarter-Finals time in the tennis doubles, with Dan Evans and Andy Murray in action against the USA. Meanwhile Katie Boulter and Heather Watson were up against an Italian duo for a place in the semis. There was more rowing action, the gender debate was reignited in the boxing, and Joe Clarke was chasing a medal in the canoe slalom K-1. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Sloane Stephens, Frances Tiafoe, Madison Keys, Ben Shelton and Christopher Eubanks all bagged impressive wins to book second-round spots. While George Loffhagen, Jasmine Paolini and Heather Watson put in decent efforts before falling at the first hurdle. Interview snippets from Stephens, Shelton and Eubanks pressers included.
The actor Cate Blanchett celebrates the work and life of Glenda Jackson, who died this week. The mothers of Grace O'Malley Kumar and Barnaby Webber spoke about their loved ones at a public vigil in Nottingham. Lisa Squire's daughter Libby was murdered as she walked home from a night out. Did choosing to go public and share her emotions and pain with a wider audience help her deal with her grief? For the first time four British women have reached the quarter-finals of the same WTA (Women's Tennis Association) Tour event. Katie Boulter, Harriet Dart and Jodie Burrage have joined Heather Watson in the women's last eight in the Nottingham Open. Tennis reporter Karthi Gnanasegaram explains the significance. Girlguiding has announced the closures of British Guiding Overseas and all five of its Activity Centres. Guide leader Aimmee Scholfield and Kirsty Patterson, also a leader and spokesperson for the campaign against the moves, explain why they are holding an overnight protest vigil and singalong outside Girlguiding UK headquarters. The radio presenter and broadcaster Aasmah Mir was a teenage introvert and loner. She talks about her memoir ‘A Pebble in the Throat', which tells the story of her childhood, growing up in the 1970s and 1980s in Glasgow, and traces in parallel the story of her mother's own life as a young woman In Pakistan in the 1950s before she moved to Scotland. Does the key to our happiness lie in ‘decluttering' our love life? Inspired by Japanese organising expert Marie Kondo, journalist Lucy Holden has been deleting photos, throwing away clothes and unfollowing social media accounts of her ex-partners. Lucy along with comedian Cally Beaton, a self-proclaimed ‘joyous midlife dater', discuss the pros and cons of a love life spring clean. Presenter: Clare McDonnell Producer: Dianne McGregor

Lucy and Eugene say good riddance to the 2023 Australian Open but not before giving props to maiden Grand Slam winner Aryna Sabalenka and 10-time AO champion Novak Djokovic. We discuss Ben Shelton's dream debut – the 20-year-old reached the quarter-finals and showed his match-toughness coming through a couple of five-setters. Shelton is now a top 50 player – No 44 in the current rankings. Michael Mmoh, who was hours away from leaving the country, reached the third round and recorded the biggest win of his life in the process – four-set victory over 13th seed Alexander Zverev. Shout out to Zack Evenden for giving us the backstory to that first-round win. Frances Tiafoe (and that incredible fit!) also reached the third round – fell to Karen Khachanov. There isn't a look Big Foe isn't able to pull off. Tiafoe is also at a career high 15 in the world rankings after his solid start to the season. Felix Auger-Aliassime, who was not playing his best tennis, still managed to reach the fourth round, before falling to Jiri Lehecka. He was the last man standing as well if we're buying into the “Netflix curse” (listen up for our Break Point takes). Coco Gauff reached the second week – lost to Jelena Ostapenko in the round of 16, but did win all her matches in straight sets up until then. Her second-round match against Emma Raducanu had everyone very excited about the future/before and after. Madison Keys lost to two-time champion Victoria Azarenka in the third round. Despite not protecting her semi-final points from last year, Keys seems to be in a good place after her solid start to the year after moving house. Ranah Akua Stoiber had a breakthrough tournament reaching the last four in the girl's competition (her first Grand Slam semi-final). The 17-year-old Brit looks like an exciting prospect. Elsewhere, Mikael Ymer reached a Challenger final in Belgium, Arthur Fils, 18, reached a Challenger final in France, following his first title in Portugal earlier in the year. And to close, we talk about events happening in Thailand and Lyon where Heather Watson, Alycia Parks and Jasmine Paolini are all in action. Please subscribe and share your comments. #BlackSpinGlobal

Lucy and Eugene are joined by friend of the pod Tumaini Carayol aka The Mentor. This episode is all about Wimbledon 2022! We celebrate girls' doubles champion Angella Okutoyi who put Kenyan tennis on the map after becoming the first Grand Slam winner from the country. We also talk about the women's and men's finals, paying particular attention to Tunisia's Ons Jabeur and what her run means to Africa and the Arab world. From a Black Spin Global perspective, icons Serena and Venus Williams both competed – Serena in singles and Venus in mixed doubles with Jamie Murray. Was nice to see Venus at the Centre Court centenary celebrations alongside all the legends but Serena's absence did not feel right. We discuss. We give props to the wildly underrated Heather Watson, our guy Frances Tiafoe and the ever impressive Coco Gauff. Watson broke new ground at a Grand Slam after reaching the last 16 – she was also the last Brit standing in the women's draw. Tiafoe, who was 0-2 on grass coming in, also put in a good showing and reached the fourth round for the first time. Gauff reached the third round in singles but went all the way to semi-finals in mixed doubles with Jack Sock. Don't forget to subscribe and share your comments!

Serena Williams is back! We had the honour of watching her return to action – with Ons Jabeur – at Eastbourne from her players' box courtesy of our guy Jarmere Jenkins. We're still buzzing! Black Spin Global was media accredited for Eastbourne, too. We talk about our experiences – Lucy casually asking Serena and Jabeur quality questions in press – and who we got to see while we were there – Mikael Ymer, Paul Jubb, Heather Watson, Jay Clarke, Frances Tiafoe and Madison Keys among others. We also preview Wimbledon and dissect the draws; give thanks to the tennis Gods for decent-ish first rounds for our peoples. We reveal our picks for the men's and women's crown. There's also our off-court coaching takes. Don't forget to subscribe and share your comments!
How can we implement Behavioural Science in larger organisations? On this episode, I'm doing a deep dive into practical Behavioural Science with three practitioners from across the globe, who talk about some of the projects they've been working on. My guests are all from Ogilvy Consulting, a leading Behavioural Science practice and each work in different regions.Heather Watson heads up Ogilvy's North American BeSci team from Austin, Texas, Dan Bennett is responsible for the UK and is based in London and Paolo Mercado is in Manila. To connect or learn more about them:Heather - https://www.linkedin.com/in/heathernwatson/Dan - https://www.linkedin.com/in/thebestdanielbennett/Paolo - https://www.linkedin.com/in/paolo-mercado-0a4a8a17/The idea behind the episode is to illustrate the breadth of challenges to which Behavioural Science can be put to use. You'll hear about improving customer experience, protecting people who work in safety-critical industries by helping them to change their behaviour to be more compliant with safety protocols and how Behavioural Science can help improve sales of consumer products. We also explore some of the challenges of deploying Behavioural Science in larger organisations – the obstacles, both practical and political – and the fact that we can sometimes end up proposing counter-intuitive or unorthodox solutions, which work brilliantly but can defy the logic by which normal corporate decisions are made. But that's the whole point. Behavioural Science allows us to come up with effective solutions to common business problems, that can't easily be solved by traditional thinking. It's also an opportunity for us to preview Nudgestock, Ogilvy's annual festival of behavioural science and creativity and get some clues about what you can expect. You can find out more about Nudgestock at www.nudgestock.com To be notified when new episodes of the show are available subscribe to the podcast newsletter: https://www.getrevue.co/profile/humanriskIf you enjoy this episode, you can find my discussions with other members of the Ogilvy BeSci team:Maddie Croucher who talked to me about how BeSci can help fundraising: https://www.humanriskpodcast.com/maddie-croucher-on-behavioural-science-for-fundraising/Sam Tatam introduced his book ‘Evolutionary Ideas' on how Mother Nature can inspire BeSci solutions https://www.humanriskpodcast.com/sam-tatam-on-evolutionary-ideas/Benoit de Fleurian explained how BeSci is helping to reduce anti-social behaviour https://www.humanriskpodcast.com/benoit-de-fleurian-on-preventing/And, last but definitively not least, Rory Sutherland talked about Compliance https://www.humanriskpodcast.com/rory-sutherland-on-compliance/
British tennis player and world number 12 Emma Raducanu will lead Team GB in the Billie Jean King Cup which gets underway this weekend. The 19 year old and US Open champion assumes the role in a young squad which, for the first time since 2010, is without either Johanna Konta or Heather Watson. She spoke to our sports presenter Karthi Gnanasegaram about how she's prepared for the tournament, what she's learnt in the last year and how the team manages to relax. (Image Credit: EPA)
