As well as raw talent and incredible athleticism, professional tennis ‘requires extraordinary psychological capacities', Edmund Gordon wrote recently in the LRB: ‘obsessive focus, epic self-belief'. Edmund – whose son is a rising star on the London under-nine circuit – joins Tom to discuss four recent books about the so-called golden generation of Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray, what it took for them to get to the summit of the game, and what happens to players who never manage to break into the top hundred. They also talk about the more recent rivalry between Sinner and Alcaraz, and why Djokovic thinks a slice of bread is like kryptonite.

In The Warrior: Rafael Nadal and His Kingdom of Clay (Grand Central Publishing, 2025) Christopher Clarey illuminates the skill and determination it took to accomplish Rafael Nadal's most mind-blowing achievement: 14 French Open titles. Nadal has won big on tennis's many surfaces en route to becoming one of the greatest players of all time: securing two Wimbledon titles on grass and four U.S. Open titles on cushioned acrylic hardcourts. But clay, the slowest and grittiest of the game's playgrounds, is where it all comes together best for his tactical skills, whipping topspin forehand and gladiatorial mindset. Clay is to Rafael Nadal what water is to Michael Phelps, which helps explain one of the most impressive individual sports achievements of the 21st century. Clarey draws on interviews over many years with Nadal and his team and with rivals like Roger Federer. Not just a book about tennis, The Warrior draws much wider lessons from Nadal's approach to competition. Check out his site Tennis and Beyond here. Paul Knepper covered the New York Knicks for Bleacher Report. His first book was The Knicks of the Nineties: Ewing, Oakley, Starks and the Brawlers That Almost Won It All. His next book, Moses Malone: The Life of a Basketball Prophet, will be out in the fall of 2025. You can reach Paul at paulknepper@gmail.com and follow him on Twitter @paulieknep. Spain has dominated tennis for more than 2 decades, but is their reign finally coming to an end?The country has seen a drop in the number of top 100 players in both the mens and women´s game.In today´s episode we speak to US Coach Chris Lewit who has spent the past 20 years studying Spanish tennis to discuss why this is. We look at the current state and future of tennis in Spain, the impact of more international players training in the country, and why he thinks modernising training methodologies is needed to keep Spain dominant on the world stage.Topics we look into include:Generational shifts in attitudes towards tennis.Has training more international players rather than native Spaniards had an affect? The serve is often neglected in traditional Spanish training.Does this generation of players have the willingness to suffer and sacrifice like Nadal did?Does Carlos Alcaraz represent a new generation of Spanish players with a different style? The future of Spanish tennis depends on evolving methodologies and focusing on grassroots development.Links Mentioned in this episode:-Check out Chris Lewit´s book: The Secrets of Spanish TennisSupport Dan´s 15K Your Way Challenge to raise money for Alzheimer´s Society UKFollow Control the Controllables on Instagram to keep up with all the latest on the show!Find out more about SotoTennis Academy in Spain!

We discuss his answers on Andy Murray, being part of the Nadal ceremony, and the form he found in Geneva. Plus, shock defeats for Francisco Cerundolo and Taylor Fritz. Part three (58m22s). Jannik Sinner wins a fun one. And FFT President Gilles Moretton says Roland Garros night slot is based on ‘what's better for spectators'. A career relentlessly put together by Rafael Nadal has been painstakingly chronicled and analysed by author Christopher Clarey in his new book 'The Warrior - Rafael Nadal and His Kingdom of Clay'. In conversation with David Law, Chris describes the teenage Nadal he knew, his unprecedented, absurd dominance at Roland Garros, and the backlash to his success that followed in France. They talk about the process of putting the book together, and what might follow next, for Nadal, for tennis, and possibly a Novak Djokovic follow-up for the author. The Warrior is available this week, wherever you get your books.Buy tickets for Tennis Podcast Live in London on Thursday 26th June at Shoreditch Town Hall.
