Carlos Alcaraz is once again on top of the tennis world after capturing his second US Open title in New York and reclaiming the world number one ranking from Jannik Sinner. In a trilogy final that was delayed by 50 minutes due to President Donald Trump's arrival at Flushing Meadows, Alcaraz produced a dominant display to defeat Sinner 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. Aside from a brief wobble in the second set, the Spaniard was in command throughout, outhitting his rival by 42 winners to 21 and dropping just one set all tournament. The victory marks Alcaraz's sixth major title at only 22 years of age, putting him ahead of Federer, Djokovic and Nadal at the same stage of their careers. Sinner, meanwhile, struggled with his first serve and could not maintain consistency on what many considered his strongest surface.Join Joel and Chris at Tennis Weekly HQ as they unpack what this result means for both players and the broader Grand Slam picture in 2025. Was this a missed opportunity for Sinner? What was the difference for Alcaraz compared to Wimbledon? And yes, the Drake Curse reared its head again. We also discuss how this latest chapter shapes their rivalry moving forward and what fans can expect for the rest of the season, plus unveil our Collect a Set champion and look forward to our US Open wrap-up show coming later this week!SOCIALSFollow us on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, plus email the show tennisweeklypod@gmail.com.MERCHPurchase Tennis Weekly Merch through our Etsy store including limited edition designs by Krippa Design where all proceeds go towards the podcast so we can keep doing what we do!REVIEWS***Please take a moment to rate and review the show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your pods.

This week we're delighted to welcome Dominic Thiem to the show. We've waited nearly 100 shows but finally tennis has arrived, right in the middle of the US Open, which Dominic won in a 5 set epic in 2020. One of the few non-Federer, Nadal, Djokovic players to win a slam while those three were at their peak, Dominic's career saw him win 17 ATP titles alongside the Slam before being forced into retirement at just 31 through injury. But in his own words, Dominic describes this as a ‘new beginning not a farewell'. From playing through the most incredible era tennis has seen, losing two French Open finals to Nadal and one Australian Open to Djokovic, receiving over $30m in prize money; this is a serious education that few could even think about experiencing. So how is Dominic applying this to his life away from the court, and what is it like for a tennis player when they move on from an individual sport that requires your 100% focus? As a big tennis fan, this was a special show to do with one of the most normal and humble athletes we've had the pleasure of meeting. A different conversation full of unique insight delivered through the sharing of stories that we all want to know about. On today's show we discuss: The Power of Grand Slams: What makes the four Grand Slams such incredible events to participate in…and which one did Dominic enjoy the most? Playing Rafael Nadal in two French Open finals and the aura that surrounded one of the sport's greatest ever players. Dominic's triumphant 2020 US Open victory; coming from two sets down to achieve his lifetime ambition. The pain of loss and the 2020 Australian Open final defeat to Djokovic. The Finances of Tennis Players: Is the distribution of revenue from tournaments to players sufficient? Can you carve out a career for yourself if you are outside of the world top 100? The importance of capitalising on success to build your value as a brand off the court. A look at the ATP's ‘Baseline Initiative': does the effort to ensure players have a minimum fixed annual salary work? What was it like to receive his first paycheck of €4,000 just for playing in a tournament? How are the finances divided up amongst the players team when prize money is received? How it can cost nearly $1m for a young player to reach the top of the sport! The Tennis World Today: How important has the rise of Alcaraz and Sinner been to carry forward this next phase of tennis? The importance of academies and investment into tennis to make the pathway for young players easier to navigate. Is tennis about to see a LIV golf style disruption? What rules would Dominic change to make the sport more appealing to the audience of today? A huge thank you to our amazing partners on the show: Stryde Bringing sports investment opportunities to your door. Visit www.gostryde.com to become part of the movement!

This week's episode is a globe-trotter's dream (sort of). Jay is gearing up for a trip to Vietnam while Chris takes a swing at Wimbledon. We also talk about Ffion Davies' brand-new BJJ gym, Arma, and then dive into some very serious debates: Sydney Sweeney's jeans and the eternal question—who's better looking, Nadal or Federer? On top of that, we review Barbarian (thanks to Chris' Netflix pick) and give our unfiltered take. It's travel, tennis, BJJ, movies, and questionable fashion analysis all rolled into one. Did we Ace it? Not sure, but it's definitely Better Than Average.
Tensions range from 19 lbs (Mannarino) to mid-40s on average.Personalization is Key: Like fitted golf clubs, rackets must match a player's style and level. Craig watches players hit to adjust weight, balance, and strings, enhancing control and reducing strain.Injury Prevention: Mismatched equipment, not technique, often causes “tennis elbow.” Proper fitting can eliminate the need for medical interventions like cortisone shots.Club Player Focus: Recreational players benefit most from tailored gear, as lessons alone can't overcome equipment limitations, with Craig demoing pro setups (e.g., Cilic's US Open racket) to prove...

As well as raw talent and incredible athleticism, professional tennis ‘requires extraordinary psychological capacities', Edmund Gordon wrote recently in the LRB: ‘obsessive focus, epic self-belief'. Edmund – whose son is a rising star on the London under-nine circuit – joins Tom to discuss four recent books about the so-called golden generation of Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray, what it took for them to get to the summit of the game, and what happens to players who never manage to break into the top hundred. They also talk about the more recent rivalry between Sinner and Alcaraz, and why Djokovic thinks a slice of bread is like kryptonite.

In The Warrior: Rafael Nadal and His Kingdom of Clay (Grand Central Publishing, 2025) Christopher Clarey illuminates the skill and determination it took to accomplish Rafael Nadal's most mind-blowing achievement: 14 French Open titles. Nadal has won big on tennis's many surfaces en route to becoming one of the greatest players of all time: securing two Wimbledon titles on grass and four U.S. Open titles on cushioned acrylic hardcourts. But clay, the slowest and grittiest of the game's playgrounds, is where it all comes together best for his tactical skills, whipping topspin forehand and gladiatorial mindset. Clay is to Rafael Nadal what water is to Michael Phelps, which helps explain one of the most impressive individual sports achievements of the 21st century. Clarey draws on interviews over many years with Nadal and his team and with rivals like Roger Federer. Not just a book about tennis, The Warrior draws much wider lessons from Nadal's approach to competition. Check out his site Tennis and Beyond here. Paul Knepper covered the New York Knicks for Bleacher Report. His first book was The Knicks of the Nineties: Ewing, Oakley, Starks and the Brawlers That Almost Won It All. His next book, Moses Malone: The Life of a Basketball Prophet, will be out in the fall of 2025. You can reach Paul at paulknepper@gmail.com and follow him on Twitter @paulieknep. Part one - We cover an impressive first performance for Iga Swiatek, the still taboo subject of periods in sport, and Naomi Osaka's sadness and worrying press conference following her narrow defeat to Paula Badosa. Part two (35m12s). Novak Djokovic finally does his pre tournament press conference and it does not disappoint. We discuss his answers on Andy Murray, being part of the Nadal ceremony, and the form he found in Geneva. Plus, shock defeats for Francisco Cerundolo and Taylor Fritz. Part three (58m22s). Jannik Sinner wins a fun one. And FFT President Gilles Moretton says Roland Garros night slot is based on ‘what's better for spectators'.
