Rick Macci thought he was mad when he answered Richard Williams's call and turned up in Compton to see his two little girls play tennis. What he saw was two of the greatest of all-time in the making: Venus and Serena Williams. As portrayed by Jon Bernthal in the Oscar-winning film King Richard, Macci coached the girls for four years and remains friends with the whole family. We talk: Why Serena and Venus are "like family" to him What marks out a special player How he could fix Emma Raducanu's game Clay courts of the USA (and why hard courts could be a better coach) What's happened to Sofia Kenin And so much more! LISTENER QUESTIONS Laurie on email: Would Calvin be able to elaborate about the 4 stages of a shot (anticipation, perception decision and action) and how these differ from each other? Also specifically regarding the component, shaping, diversion and automatic stages of developing these? Sami Dowd on Twitter: Was Calvin encouraged at all with Dominic Thiem's performance against Stefanos Tsitsipas or does he still think there is no way he comes back? Love Will Survive on Twitter: Why didn't you lot record a pod from May 2019 to 2020? Tim Mason on Twitter: Protected rankings - how long do you get them for and who has ever really benefited? Kyle Edmund not having much fun at the moment. Laurie again: Was Brandon Murphy 's behind-the-back passing shot in the UK pro league the shot of the year so far? I can't quite tell from the footage but he looks like he's fully de-weighted when he hits it?! ParentingAces - The Junior Tennis and College Tennis Podcast
Welcome to Season 11, Episode 6, of the ParentingAces Podcast, a proud member of the Tennis Channel Podcast Network. This week, Lisa chats with former touring pro, Jack Oswald, about his venture into entrepreneurship with Cancha Racquet Bag. After nearly a decade of traveling the world on the men's pro tennis circuit, Jack Oswald grew tired of experiencing the downfalls of traditional tennis bags: broken zips, loose stitching, uncomfortable straps and a ‘one-size fits all' mentality that let him and others down time and time again. With a creative idea and entrepreneurial spirit, Oswald set out to create a uniquely adaptable, highly durable and customizable tennis and sports bag that could be used not only for avid and competitive tennis players but also for the outdoor adventurer. The result of Jack's labor of love, inspired by deep frustration? The Cancha Racquet Bag holds up to four racquets and was designed using a unique modular attachment system. Cancha, appropriately, means ‘court' in Spanish but Jack adds, “Cancha also translates into activity and is an action word used to describe a go-getter. That's the type of adjective that fits perfectly with the Cancha brand.” “I wondered why no brands out there came up with a durable racquet bag that would see you through at least a whole season,” said Jack, 26, a resident of Great Britain. “I imagined a bag which, through its uniquely adaptable and customizable design, would be totally personal to each user and act as the perfect tool to help them achieve their goals.” The design of the Cancha bag is unique for another reason; there are no large logos placed on the bag. “People can tell our bags from a mile away,” said Jack. “The design speaks for itself and we keep the logos to a minimum.” Features of the Cancha bag include: § Durable and flexible material giving maximum protection from the elements § Accessory pockets for those little but important items § Removable shoulder straps § Lightweight, making it easy for juniors and adults alike § Modular system for maximum adaptability § Wet-dry bag accessory for soiled shirts and shorts Born in Virginia, Jack spent 14 years in the United States and competed in national and international tournaments as a junior before his family moved to Europe. Fluent in three languages (French, Spanish and English), he holds a Master's in Business Administration from the University of Stirling (2021) and has also spent time as a hitting partner to ATP pros like Kyle Edmund and Aljaz Bedene. “I am very interested in the lives of those grinding it out on the lower levels of the pro circuit,” Jack says. “My days traveling to the $10,000 Futures-level tournaments helped me learn what a player really needs from a great tennis bag.” To shop all Cancha products, go to: https://canchabags.com/collections/all. Catherine, David and Matt are back together for the first time since the Australian Open with plenty to catch up on, including an exciting Fed Cup weekend, titles for Kiki Bertens, Gael Monfils and Kyle Edmund, and the impending return of Kim Clijsters. How important is it that home and away ties continue to exist in Fed Cup? Why did Jo Konta not commit to it? And will Monfils build on this form at bigger events? There’s also a chance to look back on our interview with Marion Bartoli, discuss some Fed Cup outfit fiascos, and collectively cringe at some social media #content involving Edmund.* NEWSLETTER *Sign up to get our news, predictions and Matt’s Stat. As the year draws to a close and the players either put their feet up somewhere warm and sunny or get back into the lung-busting job of pre-season training blocks, this week we start to look back on the story of 2018 by hearing again some of our favourite interviews from the first half of the season, from the American hard courts of the tennis mecca that is Indian Wells through to the sun-burnt clay and imperial majesty of Rome. We start in Indian Wells where Sascha Zverev was bidding to follow on from his breakthrough year in 2017. Key to building the Zverev game has been building the Zverev body and the responsibility for that job has fallen squarely on the shoulders of Jez Green. Formerly conditioning coach for Tomas Berdych and more recently Andy Murray, Green spoke with Jill Craybas at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden and shared some of the secrets to his success. We then we move to Miami and another man off and running quicker than ever before in 2018 was Britain's Kyle Edmund, a semi-finalist at the Australian Open and already making huge strides under a new head coach, Freddie Rosengren. Always ready and available to share his thoughts, Freddie spoke with Seb Lauzier in the players' garden in Miami about Kyle's rapid rise. Moving to Europe and on the clay courts of the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters we heard from Boris Becker, before moving to Madrid and a look at tennis in Spain with a legend of that country, Emilio Sanchez. Finally to Rome where along the way there had been plenty for Italian tennis to cheer about, Fabio Fognini rising to the occasion and good wins for Marco Cecchinato and Matteo Berrettini, all of which left the country's Davis Cup captain Corrado Berrazutti in a good mood when he spoke to us alongside the magnificent Pietrangeli court. And remember, these interviews and many more are also available on our 'Exclusives' channel on TuneIn - https://bit.ly/2CNeiz1
Greek tennis journalist Vicky Georgatou joins James Gray and George Bellshaw to discuss Stefanos Tsitsipas' first ATP title. The pod also look at Kyle Edmund's maiden win, the ATP awards and the Swiss Indoors. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

We also hear from Rafael Nadal on his defeat to Dominic Thiem, Alex Corretja and Emilio Sánchez talk all things Spanish Tennis, Dusan Lajovic invites us to his coffee shop in Serbia and Freddie Rosengren tells us how he's building brit Kyle Edmund into a player who can regularly challenge at the top of the game.
Just days after a momentous two weeks in Australia, we look back on the twists, the turns and the Federer-fuelled magic of the first Grand Slam of the season. Seb Lauzier introduces features with the champion himself, plus interviews with Marin Cilic, Grigor Dimitrov, Kyle Edmund, Hyeon Chung, Lleyton Hewitt, Michael Chang and Kei Nishikori.
At the halfway stage of the Australian Open, Gigi Salmon is joined by AO Radio commentators Simon Cambers and Nick McCarvel to look back on the first week of action. What a week in the French capital and one to remember with a first-time Masters 1000 winner in the American Jack Sock, fairytale runs for others and a week and highs and lows for Rafael Nadal, confirmed as year-end number one day, only to withdraw injured the next. Our eight for London are confirmed, the NextGen ATP Finals are around the corner, which means a lot to talk about on the latest edition of the ATP Tennis Radio Podcast.
