It's a whistlestop episode for Ben and Tumaini, who had a train to catch late Friday night at the U.S. Open. We have a lot to catch up on, including the firestorm created by the Townsend-Ostapenko match and why that hit such a cultural nerve, the bizarre mess of a scene at Iga Swiatek's press conference (which the USTA deleted from the record), Altmaier's avoidance of Tsitsipas' drama, chatter around Carlos Alcaraz's hair, Coco Gauff's struggles, Naomi Osaka sparkling, Ben Shelton and Jack Draper's injuries, the visibility of gambling on site, and a bit more. Thank you for listening! Our Patreon is back up and running to ensure NCR keeps going and stays ad-free, and we hope you can join in supporting NCR! And we especially thank our GOAT backers: Pam Shriver and J. O'D. And please check out Ben's new writing home, Bounces! And Tumaini's work at The Guardian!

Le come-back impossible ?
Tennisnerd - Talking tennis with industry pros and enthusiasts
Petros Tsitsipas has spent most of his career carving out a place on the doubles tour, often alongside his brother Stefanos, but in recent months, he has been shifting his focus back to singles. I recently had the chance to sit down with him for a long conversation about life on tour, the unique dynamic of playing with siblings, the changing nature of doubles, and, of course, his gear.
It was a crazy first day at Wimbledon, but Catherine, David and Matt were live to help process it all. Part 1 - Carlos Alcaraz took a scenic route to eventually beat Fabio Fognini. We discuss the potential reasons why and what if anything it means for his 2025 Championships bid. The original Next Gen members Medvedev and Tsitsipas continue to struggle and continue to provide unconvincing responses in press, We will have to wait until tomorrow though to find out the fate of two other members of that group, as both Fritz and Zverev are suspended overnight. The new next generation on the block, however, as represented by Joao Fonseca, was looking good. Part 2 (42m08s) - We discuss Sonay Kartal's unexpected win over an out of sorts Jelena Ostapenko, solid performances for Katie Boulter and Emma Raducanu, and a reasonably comfortable victory for dormant-volcano-due-for-eruption Marketa Vondrousova. Sabalenka made short work of Branstine, but reigning Australian Open Champion Madison Keys had a tough time of it against Ruse. We are concerned about how Jasmine Paolini is looking despite having made it through to Round 2, and an incredible performance by Amanda Anisimova which thoroughly delighted Matt was overshadowed by security concerns around Putintseva and by Ons Jabeur retiring injured from her match. In Part 3 (66m18s), we finally name our strawberry mascot, and run through the order of play for Day 2, now supplemented with matches held over from today.Become a Friend of The Tennis PodcastCheck out our new merch shop!
It's the Roland Garros 2025 2nd Round Show... In Thursday's action, Henrique Rocha and Alexander Bublik each pulled off upset wins from down 2-0, against Jakub Mensik and Alex De Minaur Respectively. Joao Fonseca was dominant against Pierre Hughes-Herbert to set up a meeting with Jack Draper, who fended off a fluctuating Gael Monfils. Blisters are the only concern for Novak Djokovic who's tennis was rather blistering against Corentin Moutet. In Wednesday matches, Casper Ruud was effected by injury in a loss to Nuno Borges, Carlos Alcaraz dazzled against Fabian Marozsan, Tommy Paul was tough as his truck in comeback against Marton Fucsovics, Holger Rune put in a disciplined performance against Emilio Nava, and Stefanos Tsitsipas continued his slide with an upset defeat against Mateo Gigante. 0:00 Intro 0:50 Rocha def Mensik 5:05 Bublik def De Minaur 14:20 Fils def Munar 24:00 Fonseca def Herbert 28:00 Draper def Monfils 33:50 Djokovic def Moutet 45:00 Borges def Ruud 48:25 Alcaraz def Marozsan 51:25 Paul def Fucsovics 54:50 Rune def Nava 58:28 Gigante def Tsitsipas Joao Fonseca and Jack Draper are set for a 3rd round blockbuster. The gang's all here! Joel, Kim and Chris return to serve up all the drama from Round 2 of Roland-Garros 2025 — and what a rollercoaster it's been! It was heartbreak for the British women as all three bowed out, but there's still hope on the men's side with a surprise all-Brit clash now set between Fearnley and Norrie. Meanwhile, Jack Draper lit up the Parisian night in a sizzling showdown with crowd-favourite Gael Monfils — and did his best to dodge a 5th set thriller!Emotions ran high as French maestro Richard Gasquet bid adieu to the sport on Court Philippe-Chatrier, falling to World No. 1 Jannik Sinner. We look back at his fabulous career (and that oh-so-silky one-handed backhand!). Elsewhere, big names like Djokovic and Alcaraz powered on, while seeds Tsitsipas, Ruud, de Minaur, and Mensik suffered surprise exits. While British women are out — with Raducanu falling to queen of clay Iga Swiatek — the American charge is alive and swinging, with Gauff, Keys, and Kenin all cruising through (rackets in hand this time!). And don't miss our pick for Round 3: Ostapenko vs Rybakina — it's going to be fire!PROPERTY HUB INVESTIf you're serious about property, head to https://propertyhub.net/start to take your first step.SOCIALSFollow us on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, plus email the show tennisweeklypod@gmail.com.MERCHPurchase Tennis Weekly Merch through our Etsy store including limited edition designs by Krippa Design where all proceeds go towards the podcast so we can keep doing what we do!REVIEWS***Please take a moment to rate and review the show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your pods.
