We're back from our first ever trip to Wimbledon with lots of stories from the grounds and our impressions of the whole British Empire of it all (it's intoxicating at the same time). We were there for the hottest opening day in Wimbledon's history, and the heat seemed to wreak havoc on the draw, with 36 seeds out by the end of round two. We'll take you through the draws and some notable matches we saw -- Fritz-Mpetshi Perricard, Krejcikova-Eala, Sabelanka-Branstine, plus Mboko, Baptiste, and ‘Cos' Giron. Plus, if you're curious about the various ways to get Wimbledon tickets, we've got you (even though it's still not easy). 2:00 What it was like being at Wimbledon: Let's start with the food 10:05 Around the grounds: ivy, flowers, Henman Hill, Hailey the Baptist 30:30 How does one get tickets to Wimbledon? 39:30 It was really hot and a bunch of seeds fell 47:00 Women's draw: #2-6 are out but Andreeva and Swiatek remain in the bottom half … 57:30 Men's draw: Fritz hanging on, Alcaraz playing entirely too many sets Theme music courtesy of Oleg Fedak from Pixabay

It was a crazy first day at Wimbledon, but Catherine, David and Matt were live to help process it all. Part 1 - Carlos Alcaraz took a scenic route to eventually beat Fabio Fognini. We discuss the potential reasons why and what if anything it means for his 2025 Championships bid. The original Next Gen members Medvedev and Tsitsipas continue to struggle and continue to provide unconvincing responses in press, We will have to wait until tomorrow though to find out the fate of two other members of that group, as both Fritz and Zverev are suspended overnight. The new next generation on the block, however, as represented by Joao Fonseca, was looking good. Part 2 (42m08s) - We discuss Sonay Kartal's unexpected win over an out of sorts Jelena Ostapenko, solid performances for Katie Boulter and Emma Raducanu, and a reasonably comfortable victory for dormant-volcano-due-for-eruption Marketa Vondrousova. Sabalenka made short work of Branstine, but reigning Australian Open Champion Madison Keys had a tough time of it against Ruse. We are concerned about how Jasmine Paolini is looking despite having made it through to Round 2, and an incredible performance by Amanda Anisimova which thoroughly delighted Matt was overshadowed by security concerns around Putintseva and by Ons Jabeur retiring injured from her match. In Part 3 (66m18s), we finally name our strawberry mascot, and run through the order of play for Day 2, now supplemented with matches held over from today.Become a Friend of The Tennis PodcastCheck out our new merch shop! With the release of the Wimbledon Draw, Erik and Aidan hop on the pod for a quick discussion covering what they are seeing from the matchups and what excites them looking forward into the tournament. Some players seem to have an easier draw than others, and certain top seeds may be ousted early. The guys discuss whether Sinner or Alcaraz will have an easier run to the final, and what top players could make an exit earlier than their projected quarterfinals. Djokovic seems to have the easiest path, while Jack Draper has to go through the gauntlet. Be sure to check back later in the week for a full episode discussing these topics!

Wimbledon! The Championships are upon once again with a lot to live up to after THAT dramatic finale at Roland Garros. Join the gang at Tennis Weekly HQ as they react to the men's and women's draws, dish out some dodgy predictions and unveil Collect a Set player picks. On the men's side, the question on everyone's lips might be will we get another edition of the Carlos Alcaraz - Jannik Sinner rivalry? Joel's not so sure and whilst Carlitos has been handed a pretty routine draw on paper, Jannik Sinner got some trick battles including a potential all Italian quarterfinal with Lorenzo Musetti, last year's semifinalist. Great British hope Jack Draper also got dealt a nightmarish draw with both his French Open conqueror Alexander Bublik and Queen's conqueror Jakub Mensik in his section along with Novak Djokovic who has been in the last SIX Wimbledon finals. On the women's side, can Aryna Sabalenka finally get over the finish line and win a Grand Slam title this season? In her way is a potential R3 showdown with Britain's Emma Raducanu or former champion Market Vondrousova who got the better of her recently in Berlin. French Open champion Coco Gauff also may have hoped for a kinder draw with a tricky opening against Nottingham finalist Yastremska with Rybakina and Swiatek lurking close by. The team also discuss prize money as Britain's Oliver Tarvet will NOT be allowed to claim his prize money of at least £66,000 due to still being in college in America. This week Erik and Aidan kick off the episode by discussing the pair of ATP 500 tournaments that happened this past week in Halle and London at Queen's Club. In Halle, the story of the week was Sinner getting upset by Alexander Bublik in the second round. Immediately, this loss has driven speculation about both Sinner's level on grass and his mental state after his loss at Roland Garros. On the other side, Alcaraz won the title at Queen's club for a second time, giving him even more momentum going into Wimbledon in a couple of weeks. The pair then discuss some of their 2025 predictions that they made at the end of last year, and look back at how accurate their commentary from that time has been through six months. Be sure to check back next week for another episode!

Alcaraz gets the quote of the podcast - "thinking clearly."
Sportscaster Adnan Virk is the guest on this episode of the podcast, and the Canadian has a lot to say about the past, present and future of tennis. Virk laments on the loss of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, and contemplates Novak Djokovic's motivation as he pursues a 25th major title. The MLB Network and Amazon Prime NHL host also explains why Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz have brought life to the sport, and discusses the pros and cons of comparing eras in any sport. Virk also dives into the root of his love for the sport, and why tennis so popular among fellow athletes as well. The broadcaster also discusses some players that might be able to break through on the ATP & WTA, and chats about his other notable passion: the film industry! Hosted by Mitch Michals.
With Wimbledon one week away, the grass court season is in full flow so join Joel, Kim and Chris at Tennis Weekly HQ as they look back on yet another enthralling week of tennis on the tour. Carlos Alcaraz continued his red hot streak to reclaim the Queen's title whilst former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova announced she was back with victory in Berlin, including a dominant performance over the World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka. Not to be outdone, Alexander Bublik continued his mid season purple patch with a Roland Garros reversal win over Jannik Sinner (who had the time to release some opera music with Andrea Bocelli) en route to the Halle title over Daniil Medvedev whose long wait for an ATP Tour title goes on. Elsewhere, Petra Kvitova announced her retirement from the sport, Nick Kyrgios was dropped from the BBC's Wimbledon coverage and the US Open announced their star studded Mixed doubles event. Headlined by the tantalising partnership of Carlos Alcaraz and Emma Raducanu, the gang debate just what impact a singles based doubles event will have on the format or whether it's just one big gimmick. They also look ahead to the final lead up events in Eastbourne, Mallorca and Bad Homburg as Wimbledon qualifying gets underway.SOCIALSFollow us on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, plus email the show tennisweeklypod@gmail.com.MERCHPurchase Tennis Weekly Merch through our Etsy store including limited edition designs by Krippa Design where all proceeds go towards the podcast so we can keep doing what we do!REVIEWS***Please take a moment to rate and review the show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your pods.
The boys kick things off by diving into the grass court season, weighing the pros and cons of the Queen's and Halle tournaments. Along the way, they share some hilarious anecdotes—plus, Sam learns the hard truth that winning Queen's might not be as impressive as he once thought. Next, the crew breaks down the US Open Mixed Doubles entry list, unpacking the quirky new format and some spicy team pairings—like Alcaraz and Raducanu. Turns out, Sam's hot take from last year might actually be coming true. The episode wraps with a fun segment imagining what jobs top tennis players would have if they weren't on tour. From Alcaraz as a cabana boy to Sinner working at an amusement park, the guys deliver some oddly accurate (and laugh-out-loud) hypothetical scenarios. 00:00 Intro 00:43 Grass Court Season: Queens and Halle 03:15 Memorable Moments at Queen's Club 08:38 US Open Mixed Doubles Format and Teams 15:13 Wildcard Requests 15:35 Predictions and favorite teams 20:47 Hypothetical Players 9-to-5 Jobs 28:16 Wrapping up

Today's word of the day is ‘answer' as in response as in Thunder as in NBA Finals as in Pacers as in SGA. Oklahoma City rolled in Game 2 like everyone thought they would. Heartbreak in Game 1, but this team knows how to respond. How about the NBA putting the logo on the court digitally? Were you a fan of that? (11:00) Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner played one of the best tennis matches you'll ever see in the French Open final. Amazing tennis. What a comeback. Couldn't believe my eyes. On the opposite side we have Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka. Gauff won her second Grand Slam. Sabalenka won the first set and then was outplayed. After the match… sore loser times a million. (30:00) Review: Pee Wee as Himself (34:10) Corbin Burnes is done for the season. Another pitcher needing Tommy John. Here we go again. (44:00) I have never seen what happened to Ryan Weathers happen before. Drilled in the head by a throw to 2nd in a warmup. And he stayed in the game after being flat on the field. What? Are the Marlins serious? (49:00) NPPOD. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
