The first four rounds of the Australian Open featured historically few upsets--the Top 6 seeds are all still in for both the men and women—and so Ben and Tumaini had lots of big stars to talk about heading into the business end of this tournament. We start with the women: Sabalenka-Jovic, Gauff-Svitolina, Pegula-Anisimova, and Rybakina-Swiatek. And then on the men's side, there's Alcaraz-de Minaur, Zverev-Tien (after Tien demolished Medvedev), Musetti-Djokovic, and Shelton-Sinner. Lastly, Tumaini talks about his cousin being very famous now. Thank you for listening! Our Patreon is back up and running to ensure NCR keeps going and stays ad-free, and we hope you can join in supporting NCR! And we especially thank our GOAT backers: Pam Shriver and J. O'D. And please check out Ben's new writing home, Bounces! And Tumaini's work at The Guardian!

Catch up on all the Australian Open Day 4 action in our latest Last Ball Drops review
For the second season running, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner shared all four Grand Slam titles between them in 2025.Three of the four Slam finals – the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open – were contested by the top two in men's tennis, with the Australian Open, in which Sinner beat Alexander Zverev in the final, the sole exception. It is 10-11 that the great rivals meet in a fourth successive Slam decider in Melbourne this month, a feat last completed by Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal at the 2012 French Open, and the concern for those looking to oppose the top two is that there appears to be a genuine lack of emerging talent.Two-time defending champion Sinner is seeking to complete a hat-trick at Melbourne Park and the Italian looks less likely to slip-up than Alcaraz, who, at 22, will become the youngest man to complete the career Grand Slam should he win the singles title. However, the Spaniard has yet to go beyond the quarter-final stage on four previous trips down under and his decision to split with long-time coach Juan Carlos Ferrero, who had been alongside him for 15 years and for all six of his Grand Slam title triumphs, seems untimely and could lead to a lack of focus.

Before anything else, our thoughts this week are firmly with teh family of Damian Kust. Damian was a cherished and passionate member of the tennis community whom we lost at the age of just 26. His work covering the Challenger Tour set him apart, but his passion and knowledge was what really made him shine. RIP Damian. Details of his funeral and donations to the foundation his parents have chosen are here: https://x.com/damiankust/status/2009644081207709969 It always feels utterly empty to follow such profoundly sad news with the mundanity of the week's tennis news. Here is what else Calvin Betton, James Gray and George Bellshaw discussed this week... Novak Djokovic has pulled out of Adelaide, his only planned warm-up for the Australian Open, saying he is not physically ready for the challenge Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz have not played an ATP event yet this year either, but were busy playing an indoor practice match in front of 15,000 people in Seoul, South Korea. Poland FINALLY won the United Cup, Hubert Hurkacz gaining redemption for spurning two championship points against Alexander Zverev in 2024, beating the German en route to leading his nation to victory... ...but Iga Swiatek's form was far from impressive, and it was Katarzyna Kawa and Jan Zielinski, Luke Johnson's new partner, who were instrumental in securing the title PLUS: No Australian Open wildcard for Nick Kyrgios; there is one for Stan Wawrinka; titles for Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Bublik, Aryna Sabalenka and Elina Svitolina; Emma Raducanu's return; and OF COURSE *that* wildcard in Nairobi.
