Brett Connors returns to the podcast to dive into all the drama at Wimbledon, where the chase for the titles is on at The All England Club. Connors recaps the unfortunate events that led to Grigor Dimitrov retiring and Jannik Sinner advancing to the quarterfinals, and explains what to expect from the Italian as he prepares to battle rising American star Ben Shelton at less than full health. The host of "Advantage Connors" also examines Novak Djokovic's chances for a 25th major, Carlos Alcaraz's supremacy on the grass, and whether Taylor Fritz is a legit contender to go all the way in London. Connors also discusses how Aryna Sabalenka was able to fend off Laura Siegemund and reach the semifinals, and explains why it finally be the Belarussian's time at Wimbledon. The podcast host and tennis producer dives into Iga Swiatek's newfound game on the grass, Mirra Andreeva's ability to bounce back after Roland Garros, and American Amanda Anisimova's fortitude as she reaches the final four. Catherine, David and Matt were live at the end of the first day of quarter-finals.In Part 1 we covered Sabalenka's efforts to overcome Laura Siegemund, who was using every single one of her arsenal of tricks to frustrate and wind up the world number one. It looked fraught at times but Sablenka fought through in the end to set up a semi final clash with Amanda Anisimova, who likewise required no small amount of resilience to put missed opportunities behind her and win a compelling second set tiebreak against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. In Part 2 (29m40s) we discuss the first set of men's quarter finals, as Alcaraz showed he was on a different level to Cam Norrie, and Fritz held his nerve to see off Khachanov. Looking ahead to that semi final, there was news of confidence and optimism from Fritz about his ability to take on Alcaraz. In part 3 (42m13s) we look ahead to tomorrow's second set of quarters, but not before giving appropriate attention to Andreeva's stint at coaching Conchita Martinez with a professional level sign and hat. We ran through the percentage chances we think Cobolli and Shelton have against Djokovic and Sinner, though with some uncertainty for the latter as we wait to see the true significance of the injury he sustained against Grigor Dimitrov.Become a Friend of The Tennis PodcastCheck out our new merch shop! Quarterfinal action is underway, with the real Carlos Alcaraz delivering a Wimbledon masterclass on Centre Court to dispatch Great Britain's Cam Norrie. Alcaraz will now face Taylor Fritz, who overcame a third-set stumble to defeat Karen Khachanov and reach his second Grand Slam semifinal in the last 12 months, climbing back to No. 4 in the live rankings. But is he too reliant on his canon of a serve? Meanwhile, electronic line-calling sparked more controversy when an errant ‘Fault!' call disrupted a crucial point, adding to a growing list of technological mishaps this fortnight. On the women's side, Aryna Sabalenka kept her quest for a maiden Wimbledon title alive with a dramatic, last-gasp win over grass-court specialist Laura Siegemund. Amanda Anisimova also booked her place in the semifinals — her first at a Grand Slam since 2019 — with a tense victory over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova to continue her stellar season. Ben is joined for the final time during this Wimbledon by Ricky Dimon, to discuss the fourth round matches that were played and how the quarterfinals and beyond are shaping up. We then discuss Sinner's not-great health outlook as well, and then shift to the rest of the happenings in the middle round of Wimbledon, including the wildness of the utter failure of automated electronic line calling on Centre Court during Pavlyuchenkova-Kartal.  Thank you for listening! Our Patreon is back up and running to ensure NCR keeps going and stays ad-free, and we hope you can join in supporting NCR! Before we get into the action, massive big up to everyone who showed up and showed out for us at Boxpark Croydon on Sunday (Day 7). We had a blast and it was a pleasure meeting you all. Ben “10” Shelton is through to his first Wimbledon quarter–final after a 3-6, 6-1, 7-6(1), 7-5 victory over Lorenzo Sonego. The head-to-head now reads 4-1 to the American. The 10th seed made a sluggish start and dropped his first set of the tournament to the Italian who he was facing for the third Grand Slam in a row. Shelton recovered well in the second set, winning it 6-1. At 1-1, Shelton held from 15-40 down and took over after that, breaking Sonego in the next game, then holding with ease before breaking the Italian again en route to securing it. The third set was a much tighter affair. The pair exchanged breaks at 3-3, then both held until 6-6. It was one-way traffic in the tiebreak with Shelton wrapping it up 7-1. The fourth set followed the third, both men were holding comfortably until Sonego, serving to stay in the match at 5-6, fumbled. Shelton hit a clean return winner at the start of the game and would eventually break the Italian for a fourth time to seal victory. Jannik Sinner or Grigor Dimitrov await in the last eight. Century up! Wimbledon Day 6 is in the books — join Kim and Chris as they reflect on another milestone day for Novak Djokovic, who glided into the fourth round and notched his 100th match win at Wimbledon on Centre Court. Jannik Sinner also enjoyed a comfortable win, cruising past an injured Pedro Martinez, while Marin Cilic continued his strong grass-court form. Grigor Dimitrov reached his own milestone with his 100th Grand Slam match win, and the ever-consistent Alex De Minaur booked yet another second-week Slam appearance - he's now reached the last 16 in 7 of the last 8 Slams. It was a dramatic day on the women's side too, sparking debate among the team: is Iga Swiatek now the favourite from the bottom half of the draw to reach the final? And what's with all the pasta and strawberries? There were tears as defending champion Barbora Krejcikova fell to Emma Navarro, guaranteeing an eighth consecutive new women's champion at Wimbledon. Why is it so hard to defend the women's title? The team weighs in. Meanwhile, hot favourite Elena Rybakina was also sent packing by Clara Tauson, seemingly unsettled by her No. 2 Court assignment. Should she have been on Centre or No. 1 Court — and should it have made a difference? Whilst teen sensation Mirra Andreeva breezed through to R4 to get the team thinking just how influential it is to have a previous champion in Conchita Martinez by your side.BABOLATBabolat are an official partner of Wimbledon and their Wimbledon collaboration collection is available to purchase now from babolat.com SOCIALSFollow us on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, plus email the show tennisweeklypod@gmail.com.MERCHPurchase Tennis Weekly Merch through our Etsy store including limited edition designs by Krippa Design where all proceeds go towards the podcast so we can keep doing what we do!REVIEWS***Please take a moment to rate and review the show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your pods. The tournament kicked off with top seeds like Djokovic and Zverev being eliminated, with others like Medvedev barely surviving through a round or two. Other players like Alex De Minaur vastly outperformed expectations, throwing in performances like his matchup with Grigor Dimitrov, one of the most one sided matches in recent memory. Monte Carlo(s) Masters! Chris is back from Mallorca to join Joel and Kim to reflect on the past week in tennis, which saw Carlos Alcaraz claim his maiden Monte Carlo Masters Title on the ATP Tour against Italian Lorenzo Musetti. Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic had a horrible week on the French Riviera with early defeat to his clay nemesis Alejandro Tabilo as did Grigor Dimitrov who suffered a double bagel loss at the hands of Alex de Minaur and his short shorts. Whilst it was an off week for many of the top players like Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka on the WTA Tour, an Emma Raducanu-less Great Britain side made their way through to the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in Shenzhen joining the likes of USA, Spain and defending champions Italy. The trio also discuss the latest coaching changes, as former World number 1 Dinara Safina joins Diana Schnaider's team, Emma Raducanu considers Mark Petchey as her latest coaching option and there's rumour of Goran Ivanesevic joining the Stefanos Tsitsipas camp. There is also news that a certain Mr. Roger Federer is itching for a return to an exhibition tennis court which has got Joel wildly excited at the prospect of a Battle of the Surfaces 2 event against Rafael Nadal (one can dream right?). They also test their knowledge of recent WTA 1000 winners, make some daring clay court predictions and preview Stuttgart, Munich and Barcelona all taking place this week.Roland-Garros Hospitality with Sports, Travel and Hospitality GroupTo guarantee the best seats in the house with ticket-inclusive official hospitality, visit https://bit.ly/4j6RYBzSOCIALSFollow us on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, plus email the show tennisweeklypod@gmail.com.MERCHPurchase Tennis Weekly Merch through our Etsy store including limited edition designs by Krippa Design where all proceeds go towards the podcast so we can keep doing what we do!REVIEWS***Please take a moment to rate and review the show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your pods.
