Ben and Tumaini read the 126-page decision in the tribunal's decision to convict former No. 1 Simona Halep on two charges of intentional doping, and give you a deep dive into the details of the document and expound on what it all means. In the first half of this episode we get into the details so you don't have to, explaining the reasons why the tribunal was "comfortably satisfied" of Halep's guilt, and how they arrived to those two parallel verdicts through different detection methods. We also discuss why Halep's defenses failed, and what she was trying to achieve with her focus on delays to the process. In the second part of the deep dive, we explore the ramifications of these convictions, the most serious convictions a tennis star has ever received, and what they mean for Halep, her coach Patrick Mouratoglou, and the sport of tennis writ large. There's a lot to unpack here, and it's not always fun, but we hope we can shed some light on this complex case for you. Thank you for listening, and if you enjoy deep dives into tennis please pre-order Ben's biography of Naomi Osaka, coming out soon!

Welcome to Part II of our US Open wrap, this time focusing on the men's draw. Djokovic wins #24 and the challengers (aside from Alcaraz) have gotten no closer to cracking him mentally or physically … they've perhaps gotten even farther away. We talk about the semis, including the straight boy shade fest over PhoneGate and Medvedev's 12 out of 10 performance against Alcaraz. The other major story of the week is Simona Halep's 4-year ban for doping, handed down by an independent tribunal. It doesn't look good, folks. We finish up with the Williams-Ohanian tweets, some trophy size comparison, the WaPo match fixing story, and a few more odds and ends. 0:30 ND24: sharing a throne with Margaret Court (and if you don't like it you'll be told to “cry more”) 6:00 Stubborn Medvedev against serve and volleying Djokovic 16:45 My country, my tax shelter + more semiotics! 30:30 Djokovic-Shelton: the phone thing and banking on Shelton's overall appeal to the youths 45:30 Doubles: Ram/Salisbury threepeat, Bopanna runner-up at 43 51:45 The Spectrum-Disney stalemate blacks out US Open tennis for millions 55:20 Simona Halep's 4-year ban: first, the news 62:15 The Halep fallout: Patrick, Serena, Genie 77:35 US Open trophies: if size doesn't matter then why … nevermind 83:40 Reporting from the Washington Post on the largest match fixing ring in tennis history
Mağripli bir dilenci, Halep'in kumaşçılar çarşısında şöyle haykırdı diyor Sâdi; “Ey servet sahipleri, eğer sizde insaf, bizde kanaat olsaydı, dünyada dilenme adeti kalkardı”.
Olsun bekleriz biz. Sabırlıyız.) Vatan efsaneler, masallar, destanlardır. (İşte bir yerinden başladım.) Nene Hatun, Deli Dumrul, Köroğlu'dur. Vatan coğrafyadır. (Bunu kavramak zor.) Yani Ağrı Dağı, Toroslar, Ilgaz, Seyhan, Van Gölü, Tortum Şelalesi, Anzer Yaylası, Göcek, Tosya, Ermenek, Çukurova, İstanbul Boğazı, Uludağ, Palandöken say babam say; yayladır-ormandır-ovadır-çaydır-pınardır. Bir ucu Vardar Ovası'nda, bir ucu Halep çarşısındadır. Vatan Dadaş'tır, Gaggoş'tur, Efe'dir; yiğitlik vurmakla-ağalık vermekledir.

Another week in tennis, another tournament where the women were treated as second class citizens. This time, the singles final didn't start until 11pm and the doubles final took place on a non-televised court. There were some reasons for this - rain being the obvious one - but Catherine, David and Matt discuss why this shouldn't be acceptable. There's also chat about Anhelina Kalinina's great week before her unfortunate retirement in the final through injury, debate about whether Rome champions Elena Rybakina and Daniil Medvedev are in The Mix for Roland Garros, and much enjoyment from Medvedev's dance/twist/whatever that was after he beat Stefanos Tsitsipas. Elsewhere, we discuss the fact that Simona Halep has been charged with a second and separate doping offence, and we look ahead to the French Open as qualifying gets underway. The WTA regular season comes to a close with comeback kid Caroline Garcia grabbing her biggest career title, dispatching Iga-vanquisher Aryna Sabalenka in a boom-boom final. On the men's side, Holger Rune caps a momentous autumn swing that brings him from #33 to the brink of the ATP Finals, but not without a lecture from daddy. Crazy news for this week as we are on our way to the us open
Serena Williams says she will retire after the US Open, announcing in a long letter to the tennis world in Vogue that she's “evolving” away from tennis and will focus now on expanding her family and her business Serena Ventures. What's been her impact on the game? What's her legacy? Where does she rank among the greatest of all-time? And what about her clash with Emma Raducanu? Simona Halep is back in the top 10 after winning Rogers Cup beating Zhang, Teichmann, Gauff, Pegula and then Haddad Maia in the final. How much credit should her coach Patrick Mouratoglou be getting? There was a first Masters 1000 title for Pablo Carreno Busta. Is he the most underrated player on tour? Carlos Alcaraz lost to Tommy Paul from a commanding position and spoke about feeling the pressure afterwards. Are we concerned about his US Open chances? Jack Draper beat Stefanos Tsitsipas for the biggest win of his career and a place on the cusp of the top 50. What do we think his ceiling is? Nick Kyrgios beat Daniil Medvedev. Does this change our perspective on Kyrgios's chances at US Open? Dan Evans reached the semis and lost doubles final. After a big week for him, is there any sense that this US Open is last-chance-saloon in terms of having a serious chance of going deep in a grand slam? Andy Murray is set to take on Cam Norrie in Cincinnati, who wins? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Simona Halep is back where she belongs - winning big titles and inside the World's Top 10. How did she win in Toronto without always playing her best tennis? A few hours after Rafael Nadal's extraordinary victory over Taylor Fritz in a fifth set tiebreak, Catherine, David and Matt react to all the drama. How did he manage his ab injury to still win the match? Should Fritz have done better? And will Nadal even be able to play his semi-final? Elsewhere, we discuss Nick Kyrgios' tennis and the way he responded to questions about being his court summons. In the women's draw, is Simona Halep now the favourite for the title after another Centre Court masterclass against Amanda Anisimova? Or will Elena Rybakina's power be too much even for her? We also talk about Novak Djokovic's winning streak on Centre Court, drama as Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury demanded for Hawkeye to be turned off, tomorrow's order of play, and our curry with Billie Jean King!BECOME A FRIEND OF THE TENNIS PODCAST Friends of The Tennis Podcast help us to produce the show year-round, and receive exclusive access to bonus podcasts throughout the year, including Tennis Re-Lived, listener questions, and Grand Slam review shows. On what used to be Magic Monday, everything felt a lot calmer and more manageable at Wimbledon today, meaning we had time to do our favourite thing and record on site. But there was no shortage of talking points as the quarter-final line-ups were completed. In what way was Nick Kyrgios a changed man? How did Cristian Garin complete the first two sets to love comeback of the tournament against Alex de Minaur? And how will Taylor Fritz and Rafael Nadal match up in their quarter-final? In the women's draw, we talk about Simona Halep's incredible performance in her first match back on Centre Court since winning the title in 2019, her quarter-final with Amanda Anisimova, Ajla Tomljanovic's emotions, and the issue of Elena Rybakina representing Kazakhstan but being born in Moscow.
