Throughout Lent, we'll be publishing daily devotionals written and narrated by members of our congregation. This year, our theme is Transformed in Christ. Today's episode is narrated by Aaron Engelman, and features a reflection written by Pastor Roger Theimer, followed by an application written by Patrick Pierce.
Episode Notes:Maine artist, poet and abstract sculptor, Patrick Pierce, talks with me about his origin as an artist and how he works with found materials and natural processes to create massive and intricate sculptures. The philosophies of artists-- to create, to explore a subject from a different perspective -- can show us new ways to look at concepts, both beautiful and profane, that span both time and space. From perspectives and perceptions, his definition of what we call art is an artifact of the artistic process. His goal of creating value without taking value from others is a refreshing mantra for today's society. He plays by his own rules, with the central tenant being, "Be as true as possible to what wants to happen... It's a response to being alive."His honesty and frank, unique view of the world is a wonderful introduction to his work and a great jumping off point for our discussion today.SUPPORT THE SHOW:Buy Me a Coffee is the easiest way to help me to keep bringing you these conversations with artists, chefs, entrepreneurs and more about life, food, art and sustainability.. Often the best way to advance in your economic development career is to change organizations. But do you secretly worry that if you pack up and move across the country that you'll get there and be completely clueless? Today's guest did just that - Patrick Pierce moved from a large organization in Washington state to a small town in North Carolina, and he says that the coopetition is the same everywhere. Coopetition (sometimes spelled "co-opetition") is the collaboration between competitors, in hopes of mutually beneficial results. Sounds exactly like regional economic development. Special Guest: Patrick Pierce.
Economic Alliance Snohomish County (EASC) is a catalyst for economic vitality resulting in stronger communities, increased job creation, expanded educational opportunities, and improved infrastructure. Snohomish STEM Network works to foster a learning pipeline for skills in science, technology engineering and mathematics (STEM) to supply business with local talent and drive opportunity and prosperity. Sounds like a good match, one that was intentionally brought together a few years ago. This episode of Check It Out! brings EASC President and CEO Patrick Pierce and Snohomish STEM Network Director Angie Sievers into the studio to talk about how business and education can work together to support and build communities across Snohomish County. “Economic Alliance Snohomish County is about creating jobs and keeping jobs in Snohomish County,” Pierce says in this episode. “If we can focus on what people need, we can achieve economically vital, robust places in which people want to live.” Sievers leads the effort to connect communities with industries and create pathways to employment in Snohomish County through STEM. “You might hear STEAM or STREAM,” Sievers says, adding that the “A” is for art and the “R” is for reading. “Traditionally, STEM has been just about science, technology and math, but in today’s education and workforce world, it’s really about learning.” Episode length: 56:42 Episode links Patrick Pierce Patrick Pierce LinkedIn profile Economic Alliance Snohomish County Puget Sound Regional Council Seattle University, public administration University of Washington, political science Angie Sievers Angie Sievers LinkedIn profile Snohomish STEM Washington STEM Master Builders Association of King and Snohomish Counties Washington State University Resources Sno-Isle Libraries business Sno-Isle Libraries find a job Stanford Graduate School of Business articles
Patrick Pierce is Vice President of Marketing Partnerships at Etihad Airways, and oversees the Abu Dhabi carrier's sponsorship activities across sport, culture and entertainment. Standout partnerships currently include deals with Manchester City, the Abu Dhabi Formula One Grand Prix, the Abu Dhabi Tour cycling race, Major League Soccer, the Special Olympics, and the Washington Wizards and Capitals NBA and NHL teams. Chicagoan Pierce joined Etihad in 2015, having previously held sponsorship roles with McDonald's Allstate, and Aon - where he put together the high profile shirt sponsorship deal with Manchester United. On the conversational agenda: - the differences between the marketing and partnerships approach at Manchester United and Manchester City; - striking a balance between pursuing pure commercial objectives through partnerships and building Abu Dhabi as a global destination; - Pierce's approach to activation tactics; - forging a USP in a competitive regional airline market; - the best way to approach Etihad with marketing opportunities; - the airline's marketing obligation to the Emirate and how it makes its sponsorship decisions; - Etihad's innovative role as both sponsor and rights holder, and the new set of rights that Pierce and his team are marketing. Pierce is one of the industry leaders taking a role in the judging process for the Leaders Sports Awards. Categories include content creation, on-screen experience, live experience, sponsorship and innovation. Nominations close in May. Go on - get yourself a gong.
The cocktail revolution is upon us, but the coffee revolution is now intersecting perfectly. With amazing flavor combinations and coffee innovations, you would think Fleet Coffee in Austin, TX is the newest Texas cocktail haven. It is in fact an incubator for amazing flavor combinations constructed by the 2 least pretentious gentleman you'd expect. Patrick and Lorenzo both worked their way through the early days of coffee in Austin. After time working together at Cafe Medici and a brief spark of entrepreneurialism, Fleet Coffee was born. We talk fruity pebbles, closing drinks, and modern music.
