Forestry and range sciences are tied to each other in a long and complex social history, and many areas of the Western U.S. and semi-arid parts of the world host rangeland and forest plant communities in the same space and within the same management boundaries. So there is good reason to encourage range folk to given some attention to forestry, not necessarily 'board-feet' production forestry but the ecology of forests and their interactions with rangeland plant communities. This interview with Sean Alexander introduces a high-quality forest ecology-focused podcast with similar background philosophy to The Art of Range -- long interviews on a diversity of topics. Consider subscribing to The Forest Overstory Podcast if you live and work on rangeland with tall range weeds, I mean trees (the late Dr. Kendall Johnson's joke). Prominent research ecologist Dr. Paul Hessburg began his career decades ago as a U.S. Forest Service entomologist, studying the insects that kill trees on the grandest scale. Over the years, Hessburg broadened his scope, delving deeper into the greatest force for ecological change on Earth: fire and the age we live now in, the Age of Megafire, or the Pyrocene. Listen to this fascinating deep dive into how we got here and where we must go – if we hope to survive. To get the absolute most out of this conversation, revisit BHA Podcast & Blast Episode 66, our interview with fire historian Dr. Stephen J. Pyne, who coined the term “the Pyrocene.”

In the spring of 2015, volunteer fire marshall Jeff Pierce said, "I looked at the Holden leadership and said, we are not going into fire season in a drought year and record temperatures with a 80 percent complete system that's just waiting for a water source... The timing was phenomenal, because we had a functioning system a month before the lightning strike" (that started the Wolverine Creek Fire). Jeff served 26 years as a driver/engineer for Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue in northern Oregon. Since 1992 he has been working with Holden Village in developing the fire program and improving and building fire systems and staff training in fire protection and response. Danny Pavek graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota with degrees in chemistry and environmental studies. He has worked at Holden as the Fire Technician since the winter of 2019-2020. My guests for this episode are Dr. Paul Hessburg and Sara of the Era of Megafires Project. Dr. Hessburg is a research scientist who has been studying forest health and fire behavior. Rolfs is the coordinator for the project, which has been wildly successful in changing how people think about the wildfire issue. In nearly 100 presentations around the West, they have built a powerful network of land managers and public officials who are working in their communities to address this challenge. Every community affected by wildfire has the ability to craft local solutions that can make a difference over time. How they have done it gives us insights into addressing other issues in our communities. The approach works because of powerful storytelling, solid science, a grass-roots emphasis rather than a top-down approach for solutions and the great sense of empowerment that it creates in the communities that engage with this work.  These are solid strategies that can help us find new, creative ways to solve difficult and complex challenges. By golly, our society can sure use these tools for finding common ground and inspiring action at the local level.   I hope you enjoy the conversation.

Dr. Hessburg is traveling throughout North Central Washington and the region delivering the Era of Megafires presentation that highlights the causes and significant risks of our wildfire challenge. But it also proposes ways that we can solve this challenge by collaboration. This presentation, which was created in conjunction with North 40 Productions and the work or photographer John Marshall, has become the catalyst for critical conversation in communities to address the critical wildfire issues that threaten our communities, economy and the lands that we love. Solving this challenge is possible if we work together. It’s a perfect example of creative community building.
