Mystic and social activist Thomas Merton said, “Our idea of God tells us more about ourselves than about Him.” Expanding upon one of the themes of his last sermon, Rev. Scott considers how our metaphors of the Divine are both created by our cultures and influence how we see others and the world.
Religion can be a source of comfort and guidance, a basis for moral beliefs and behaviors, and provide a sense of community and connection to tradition. Rev. Scott has recently been mulling over the various ways this is realized, from a Protestant church in Kentucky to a pre-Columbian ceremonial site in Mexico. Would not an ineffable Divine, being infinitely adaptable, be able to provide meaning in any given context?

How do these principles resonate in American churches and culture 90 years later? The Latin word limen means “threshold.” Liminal space is an inner state and sometimes an outer situation where we can begin to think and act in new ways. We find ourselves at the threshold of a new church year, and for some, a new school year. How can we make the most of our time in a liminal space?
The days heat up, kids are off of school, and we may have changes of scenery on a getaway. Whether taking unhurried walks after dusk or enjoying the breeze of an electric fan, the relaxed days of Summer lend themselves to introspection.

Gazing toward the horizon can lead us to contemplate our future, but we can also reminisce and reconsider our past. Today, we remember those we've lost, what we've done, and how those things might shape our future.

Walt Whitman told us, “The smallest sprout shows there is really no death.” There are those, whom we lost this year, whose ability to inspire us will live on. Continuing his revival of an annual tradition, Rev. Scott reflects on some of these individuals.
A seed, feigning cold death, warms and sprouts to achieve its potential, unimagined until realized. We join together on the first day of a new year to think not only about what we hope to achieve, but why.

Genesis tells us we will return to the ground, because “for dust you are and to dust you will return.” Carl Sagan was a bit more specific when he pointed out that we are made of stardust. We begin Advent, when those in the narrative looked to the star, and end our monthly theme of soil with an appreciation for our interdependence with these facets of the web.

Chatting with a visitor one Sunday in Channing Hall, a congregant wondered out loud if “Unitarian Universalism” has run its course as a good descriptor of our current theology, mission, or even church communities. Let's consider our theological roots and how they inform who and where we are today.

Democracy in the United States has never been extended to everyone equally. In the American colonies only adult white male property owners could vote. Today, voter suppression assures only some can easily vote. The current makeup of the Supreme Court is a result of Presidents being appointed who did not win the majority vote. In our Fifth Principle, UUs covenant to affirm and promote “. . . the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large.” What do we imagine democracy to look like, and how do we make that happen?
