My Rifle, my Pony and me". Grace L. Dillon is an American academic and author. She is a professor in the Indigenous Nations Studies Program, in the School of Gender, Race, and Nations, at Portland State University. She received her PhD in literary studies with an emphasis in sixteenth-century literature, and her recent research regards Science fiction studies, especially the use of science fiction by indigenous peoples around the world. Similar to the concept of Afrofuturism, Dillon is best known for coining the term Indigenous Futurisms, which is a movement consisting of art, literature and other forms of media which express Indigenous perspectives of the past, present and future in the context of science fiction and related sub-genres. Dillon is the editor of Walking the Clouds: An Anthology of Indigenous Science Fiction, which is the first anthology of Indigenous science fiction short stories, published by the University of Arizona Press in 2012. Previously, Dillon has edited Hive of Dreams: Contemporary Science Fiction from the Pacific Northwest, which was published in 2003 by Oregon State University Press. This is an anthology of science fiction from writers living in the Pacific Northwest, and features works from authors such as Greg Bear, Octavia Butler, and Molly Gloss. She also coedited The Routledge Handbook of CoFuturisms with Taryne Jade Taylor, Isiah Lavender III, and Bodhisattva Chattopadhyay. Here, we discuss with Grace her origins into science fiction and the mentorships she received from the distinguished feminist science fiction writer, Ursula K. LaGuin. We define the concept of Indigenous Futurisms and its origins, taking time to understand the representation of the future and of tradition and what indigenous scientists have taught us about environmental sustainability. She also discusses the genre in other media, including film, television, and graphic novels, all of which are experiencing the growth of native contributions in recent years. Here are some of the references from this episode, for those who want to dig a little deeper:In the article that inspired the episode, friend of the podcast Jeff Yang wrote about indigenous responses to James Cameron's Avatar:Opinion: The awkward truth about the new ‘Avatar' is far bigger than its bottom line | CNNGrace Dillon BooksWalking the Clouds: An Anthology of Indigeneous Science FictionThe Routledge Handbook on Co-FuturismsHer Mentor:Ursula K. Religion can be a source of comfort and guidance, a basis for moral beliefs and behaviors, and provide a sense of community and connection to tradition. Rev. Scott has recently been mulling over the various ways this is realized, from a Protestant church in Kentucky to a pre-Columbian ceremonial site in Mexico. Would not an ineffable Divine, being infinitely adaptable, be able to provide meaning in any given context?

Scott Cooper is an ultra-trail runner from Toronto although he's been living in Calgary for the last five years.  Prior to moving to Calgary, Scott had an accomplished triathlon career and even spent a year racing professionally.  Only three weeks after he moved west, Scott found himself on a Sinister 7 relay team and as he says, “the rest is history.”   He found himself both loving trail running and excelling in really long ultramarathons.  Scott has earned top podium spots in almost every race he has done including Sinister 7 100 Solo, Fat Dog 120,  Black Spur Ultra 108K, Rivers Edge Ultra 100k, and the Calgary Marathon 50K. Most recently Scott won the inaugural Sinister Sports Divide 200 mile race in southern Alberta, Canada's first event of its kind. The 201 mile (324k) course runs along parts of the Great Divide Trail, climbing 12,335m in elevation with a time limit of 100 hours.  By crossing the finish line in first place, he established a new course record of 49h47m59s  - one that will be hard to beat.  In this episode we learn about Scott and his running background, but spend most of our time discussing everything to do with the Divide 200.  He talks about his preparation and strategy leading into the race, how he managed his nutrition, hydration, sleep and feet, and we finish up with some great advice for anyone thinking of tackling a 200 miler next year. Two hundred miles is still a distance that is largely a mystery to most runners, however more and more people are becoming tempted to take on the challenge.  If you are curious to learn more about what this new level of craziness is all about and what it takes to excel in multi day continuous races, keep listening!Resources we discussed in this episode:Our episode with Reinier Paauwe (Scott's pacer)Ren's Toes Instagram: @rens.toesConnect with Scott:Instagram: @scottcooperultraConnect with Carolyn & Kim:Email us with guest ideas: inspiredsolescast@gmail.comInspired Soles InstagramKim's InstagramKim's FacebookCarolyn's InstagramCarolyn's FacebookCarolyn's websiteWe love hearing from you! First, Christian Bale, star of The Pale Blue Eye, talks to Chris Hewitt about being mistaken for Gareth Bale, and his experiences working with directors on multiple occasions, including Adam McKay, Scott Cooper, and Terrence Malick. Then Hugh Jackman, Golden Globe-nominated star of The Son (which opens here in February), talks to Amon Warmann about his experiences on that movie, working with Anthony Hopkins for a day, and why he's about to play Wolverine again in Deadpool 3. Then, Kate Hudson and Jessica Henwick, neither of whom were in The Prestige, more than make up for it by having a freewheeling and very funny chat with Chris about their new movie Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, life with an assistant, British sitcoms, and John Carpenter and Kurt Russell. And if that weren't enough, Chris is then joined in the podbooth by James Dyer and Helen O'Hara (who's not in the podbooth, which is why there's some slight distortion on her mic this week. Hopefully it won't spoil your listening experience.) for a fun episode in which they discuss their Christmas movie traditions, who would win between John McClane and Kevin McCallister; talk about the week's movie news, including Avatar: The Way Of Water's box office, the Barbie trailer, and the sad passing of Mike Hodges; and review Corsage, Glass Onion, and The Pale Blue Eye.
