Wars bring out the worst in people, but sometimes they also bring out the best in people. Going above and beyond is not just about standing your ground or killing a lot of enemy soldiers; sometimes it is about going above and beyond what it means to be a soldier in combat and putting your humanity before your duty. Tonight, we talk about Richard Rowland Kirkland, a man who put his human need to help people above his fear of being killed earning him the nickname "The Angel of Marye's Heights". --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/above-and-beyond-podcast/support
I spoke with Richard Rowland on September 14, 2021. He shared many amazing observations and insights today.
I spoke with Richard Rowland on June 11, 2021. It was an insightful conversation about how intuition can support us in our life at one level and then due to profound life circumstances shift into another level that shines and shows up in ways we couldn't have imagined previously. BioRichard is a two tour veteran of the Vietnam War, a 28 year veteran of law enforcement, retiring from the KY State Police as a sergeant, and a 20+ year owner/operator of an equine facility in Kentucky. He is retired from all endeavors except for writing. He spends his time split between Kentucky and Maine, where he and his wife Jennifer care for her elderly parents, a horse, dog and three cats. He is thirteen years into a cancer diagnosis that came with a three year expiration date. Animals were the catalyst for change and for successfully navigating cancer. When not writing, Richard mentors people diagnosed with cancer and other health hurdles. Richard's books are called Unspoken Messages - Spiritual Lessons I learned from Horses and other earthbound souls and A Glimpse Behind the Veil - Stories about human-animal connection
Did a tiny bird in Texas really communicate with a horse and convince him it was okay to load on a trailer he’d never been on? Did a horse, after a three-year absence, know that its previous owner was present by hearing a harmonica being played? Did a horse, who had never acted up, hurt its owner on purpose so she would go to the doctor, where she discovered cancer had returned? Richard D. Rowland seeks the answer to fascinating questions as he explores the connection between humans and animals. As someone who was diagnosed with a rare blood cancer and given three years to live (more than twelve years ago), the human-animal bond is a subject he knows well. Animals caused him to rethink life and showed him things he never thought possible-and they led him to write his previous book, Unspoken Messages: Spiritual Lessons I learned from Horses and Other Earthbound Souls. Based on his interviews with people throughout the world, this book expands on how animals are misunderstood-and how they’re much smarter than most people believe. Richard Rowland assumes co-hosting duties on todays episode and weaves us through his time in Vietnam, Camp Eagle, where he did two tours. His story is one of challenges and a heaping helping of Hope. Upon his return he dealt with alcoholism, PTSD, disappointment and a feeling like he hadn't served enough. To fill this hole he joined the Kentucky State Police and retired as a Sergeant after 28 years. He started and operated Double R Stables in Kentucky, while there with life going his way, he was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma Cancer in August 2008 and was given three years to live. Facing this, he got mad and this started the changes he needed to truly live. Obviously, Richard has lived longer than three years and is thriving in Maine. Through his love of animals, he saw the beginnings of his change. He was writing his stories down and has published "Unspoken Messages" and "A Glimpse Behind the Veil" will be out in 2020. Through his journey he has developed an ability to connect with people and change lives. Along with his book he has a blog that he updates as he is moved through his life, subscribe to it so you get the new ones at www.richarddrowlandbooks.com. Great episode and very easy going, enjoy! Some acts of expression are awesome, while others suck, and one philosopher has a new theory about the difference. Using this theory as a guide, we look at some of the suckiest things that ever sucked in urban design, and the street artists and compassionate vandals who are trying to fight them. We use these stories to investigate how public spaces are becoming less free and more coercive. The first hour welcomes Mark Goodkin for a robust discussion on personal responsibility and it’s role in our society. Mark is a student of philosophy, who is interested in the philosophical foundations of our personal freedoms and republic form of government. He believes that much insight can be gained from philosophy, not only as a way to seek a secular justification for our personal freedom and rights, but also as a moral guide to our actions, whether we consider ourselves spiritual or not. While Mark is interested in pursuing those personal goals which will help him live a fulfilling life, he is also working to develop and use his gifts and talents to help others and make a difference in the world. Mark believes that many people, whether they consider themselves spiritual or not, at least to some extent, feel the same. However, Mark’s primary interest is in whether we have a moral responsibility to do so? --- In the second hour of the show, Eldon will be interviewing Richard Rowland about his book, Unspoken Messages. Richard is a two tour veteran of the Vietnam War, spending his tours at Phu Bai in the I Corp area or northern section of South Vietnam. In 2008, Richard was diagnosed with a rare blood cancer related to exposure to Dioxin (commonly known as Agent Orange). Richard is also a retired Sergeant from the Kentucky State Police after a 28 year career in law enforcement. Unspoken Messages, is a book about Hope…simply hope. It is a road map for how to live beyond medical expert expectations when you receive an end of life diagnosis. It is about a birth of spirituality in a person that had been living in a black and white, right and wrong, science proven or non-existent world. The book is in two parts with part one being ten short stories or descriptive occurrences revolving around animals which will make you question coincidence. Part two is a journey or road map that shows you how Richard traveled through an end of life diagnosis to a place of peace.
