This edition of the podcast contains adult language and themes and is not suitable for younger listeners. This special live edition of the podcast was part of Abair, an annual programme within the Saint Patrick's Festival. Between 1860 and 1925, tens of thousands of women worked in Dublin's Monto, the largest red light district in Europe. It was a world of narrow alleyways full of brothels busy with sex workers, at a time when the Catholic church was trying to establish ideas around what a woman should be. Hint: it was very different to the women of Monto. What was life like for the women who lived and worked in Monto? How did these 'poor unfortunates', as they were known, create a community and support each other amidst such hard times? And how did they influence fashion trends of the time?Joining Kate today is the fantastic Caroline West, author of Wrong Women: Selling Sex in Monto, Dublin's Forgotten Red Light District, which is available now. This episode was edited by Tom Delargy and produced by Stuart Beckwith. Send your thoughts, feelings, opinions and suggestions to 0892096423!This week's Friday guest is Dr. Caroline West, who is the author of Wrong Women: Selling Sex in Monto, Dublin's Forgotten Red Light District which is out now. I loved this book, which is a fascinating look into the women who ran Monto and the reality of life for women working within it. Caroline is a great guest, and I loved learning about this part of Dublin's history and how it connects to so many different areas of Irish life both then and now. Also includes me complaining about MAFS Australia being too much of a commitment because it's three hours a week while speaking on my podcast which is... three hours a week. The self awareness is... lacking. To support the podcast and access bonus episodes, join the community on Patreon here.Theme Song: HowDoILook, Pillow Queens Hosted on Acast. Caroline West is an eco-conscious artist who transforms discarded materials into magical works of art. After spending over 18 years in the childcare industry where she balanced her professional responsibilities with raising a family, Caroline experienced burnout and a sense of disillusionment. This pivotal moment led her to pursue her lifelong passion for art, intertwining it with her commitment to sustainability and in July 2022 Caroline left her job in childcare to pursue her art career. Caroline's work is not just a visual delight but also a statement on environmental consciousness. Each piece she creates serves as a reminder of the beauty that can be found in objects we overlook or throw away. Her art challenges viewers to reconsider their relationship with waste and inspires a more sustainable mindset. Caroline's journey from childcare to the art world is marked by her unwavering creativity and dedication to making a difference. Her story is a powerful example of how personal transformation can lead to a broader impact, advocating for a more sustainable and beautiful world. Caroline loves being outdoors and painting nature scenes. The beach is her happy place, and she loves being barefoot (shoes are the devil!). When she isn't doing her artwork she loves to travel, read, do yoga and spend time with her many rescue dogs. She's also a sucker for dark chocolate. Trevlig lyssning!
