“Send Coach John a message”I came across something from Coach AJ - Mental Fitness (@coachajkings) where he was responding to (@readswithravi) and it all connected with Coach John Wooden.  Coach AJ's thoughts were this -  “Successful people take ownership of their actions, attitude, and effort. John Wooden said, "Don't whine. Don't complain. Don't make excuses." "Get out there and whatever you're doing, do it to the best of your ability." You can't control everything - But you can control how you show up.”  All of these things got me so fired up when I read them. I know I need to be WAY better in showing up in every part of my life!! But then, I've shown up decently over the years in my life. My younger self … little 10 year old John Daly is proud of me in so many ways. He's been along for this ride for a long time!!  I need to keep it up because I know it's worth it!!  You can apply this to what you got going on!  Thanks for listening.  Please take a few moments to subscribe & share this with someone, also leave a 5 Star rating on Apple Podcasts and ITunes or other services where you find this show.  Find me on Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/coachtoexpectsuccess/   on Twitter / “X”:  @coachtosuccess   and on Instagram at:  @coachjohndaly  - My YouTube Channel is at: Coach John Daly.   Email me at: CoachJohnDalyPodcast@gmail.com     You can also head on over to https://www.coachtoexpectsuccess.com/ and get in touch with me there on my homepage along with checking out my Top Book list too.  Other things there on my site are being worked on too.  Please let me know that you are reaching out to me from my podcast.  ** I would appreciate anyone to try clicking on the top of the show notes where it says "Send us a text" to leave a few thoughts / comments / questions.  It's a new feature that I'd like to see how it works. **

“Send Coach John a message”Another gem from Inky Johnson (@inkyjohnson)  and he shares his thoughts about “The language of GRATITUDE!”  Check out the clip HERE.  He opens up with a very strong thought that I've never made a connection to!  If we forget the language of gratitude - we will never be on speaking terms with happiness. Focusing on the things I'm grateful for - every single day - that helps to keep depression, emotional downturns, feeling bad about myself, getting worked up about my worries and the worries of the world - they cannot exist in a grateful heart! Inky's whole thought about gratitude “recalibrates” us and puts us in the right spot to be better, do better, listen better, learn better, etc. In today's world -  I need that for sure!!  How about you?? Do me and yourself, a favor. It comes from TeacherGoals (@teachergoals) The intro they shared is: “Love this!” - “When you see something beautiful in someone, tell them.  It may take a second to say, but for them it could last a lifetime.”  This is so spot on. I've been trying to say things to people when I come across something that I see about them. Good service. A smile. An act of kindness that I witness them doing. A compliment to share with them. “Send Coach John a message”Reading my every day Kindle post from John Maxwell's “Daily Reader” and this one hit home for today. It's all about "Ratchet Up Your Passion!” He starts out with a powerful question - What makes it possible for people who might seem ordinary to achieve great things?  The answer is passion.  He also shares 4 truths about passion.  One, Passion is the first step to achievement.  Two, Passion increases your Will-power.  Three, Passion changes you, and Four, Passion Makes the Impossible Possible!  This is something I tried to remind my students about all through my teaching career. It's something I remind myself about and other adults too - as it's a life-long quest to keep every day we have, somehow connected to things that we are fired up about.  All of this comes from John Maxwell's book, “The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader.”  I am reminded to keep investing in myself and the things that light my soul on fire!  That's a powerful life if we can keep these things going! **

“Send Coach John a message”Mondays are great days! Early on in my life, even before I became a teacher, I tried to have a special / different connection to Mondays compared to others. Today's Daily Thought is something that I feel super connected to.  From Deep Psychology (@DeepPsycho_HQ) comes this life gem: “Don't be impressed by money, followers, degrees and titles. Be impressed by kindness, integrity, humility and generosity.”  In today's world sadly, so many people are following  the first part of this. Also, the lies, greed, lack of character, lack of responsibility, blaming others, etc., that go along with this mindset. I know I'm trying to take on more of the second part of this along with; encouragement, love, empathy, character, etc., and so many other positive traits. Sad to say, I have friends and family that are living on the first part - the crumbling part of things in life as they think everything is about winning at all costs and mixing it with the political sess-pool of today. I'm reminding myself that I love them more than I hate the person(s) and things going on with them in our country today. I also know that I need to live my life, build my life and connect more of these building blocks that are built on character, truth, etc., with people and not just flap my gums at things. One of so many reasons why I really enjoy psychology, learning and reading books …. And I know I need to connect with this even more!! **

“Send Coach John a message”Found a great post that I got some good reflections on. It came from Reads with Ravi (@readswithravi) where this was shared from James Clear: “Embrace the fact that life is continual and look for ways to enjoy the daily practice.”  What was meant by this was a bit more in depth that helped me really connect to it.  “Work is endless. Exercise is endless. Parenting is endless. Same with marriage, writing, investing, creating, and more. You get to choose the parts of your life, but many of the important things in life cannot be “finished.”  Do not approach and endless game with a finite mindset. The objective is not to be done, but to settle into a daily lifestyle you can sustain and that allows you to make daily progress in the areas that matter.  Embrace the fact that life is continual and look for ways to enjoy the daily practice.”  I love the thought of things in life not ever being finished - other than our last day. I challenge myself to keep learning new things every day I have.  You know, something just came to mind was Mitch Albom with his friend and producer, Lisa Goich - their recent “Tuesday People Podcast” (listen to it HERE) was all about changing our perspective of living each day as if it's our last and start living it as it can be our “first” of doing different things. Rather than focus on things we might lose or never have again, it's a unique mindset shift that I think connects with this post, where we keep looking to continue things and not have things that are finished. Cool stuff if you ask me. Very motivating to start changing my perspective. Hope it is for you too. **

“Send Coach John a message”I found another lesson from a former student of mine. Coach Ray Ostrowski (@CoachRayO3313) shared this gem with his introduction: “Why accept Acceptable when you're capable of Exceptional? Acceptable is ‘good enough' for some but never meets the minimum standard for Great. Take small steps daily that combat our natural instinct to be satisfied & tolerate ‘acceptable.”  I reposted this from him with my thoughts: “Great stuff @CoachRayO3313 … awesome reminder for life and for anyone open to paying attention.”  Today's episode came in my mobile studio because I wanted to get out to you as soon as I could.  Early this morning I had a dream and it got my day started in a direction of wanting to learn more, do more, and to keep getting things done.  It's all about “Acceptable vs. Exceptional” - “Why tolerate acceptable when you're capable of exceptional? This is something many wrestle with daily.  Greatness demands higher standards.  Acceptable is good enough for many - but not for the great.  Strive to develop the diligence, competitiveness, details, standards, routines, & expectations to become exceptional.  Good enough is the enemy of great.”  I hope this helps you see some things that you want to work on. Remember, there is not one way of being Exceptional. So many ways to fit it into the areas of life that we want it to be!! **

“Send Coach John a message”Found another simple, yet emotional and meaningful reminder for me from the Power of Positivity (@LIVEpositivity)  where this truth was posted:  “Every day is another chance to change your life.” Within every day there are many moments too. I've been doing more and more reflecting in the mornings with my coffee. First, I'm reminding myself each morning how much I love mornings. Getting my day started with some prayer time, reading some devotions, other daily readings to not only get me started but also to keep me grounded too. Secondly, it gets my day going in a great direction for the things I want to do and need to do. With me trying to focus a bit more on intentionally focusing on making the most of more moments, it's been eye-opening for me to keep working this way. Also remind ourselves that these “changes” don't have to be huge. They don't have to be posted about on social media. We don't have to share them with others. We just have to put action behind them. Please - remember this thought and remember it's the moments to connect with that matter which make up our days. **

A podcast reminded her that growth often requires breaking our own patterns. That insight collided with a pop-culture moment (yes, the Brooklyn Beckham drama) to spark a bigger conversation about how social media pressures us to perform, exaggerate, and air conflict publicly. Her takeaway: real alignment comes from personal responsibility, knowing what you stand for, and not feeling obligated to fight every battle for the sake of optics. If you enjoyed this episode, make sure and give us a five star rating  and leave us a comment on iTunes, Podcast Addict, Podchaser and Castbox about what you'd like us to talk about that will help you realize that at any moment, any day, you too can decide, it's your turn!

Coming at you a little bit late in the day today, but sometimes “life” gets in the way a bit. So, I'm in the library studio today and getting some stuff done.  This comes from Curious Minds (@CuriousMindsHub) where this one hit me right between the eyes and I hope you connect with it too!  “It's time to get more aggressive about the life you want.”   It is time. Not just because it's late January of a new year, but it's because it's TODAY!  Today is the only time I can do something about this because that is the moment I'm in. Truthfully, it would have been really easy to stay at home. The weather is cold and nasty, but I knew I wanted to get back to my “roots” of going someplace outside of the house, getting a coffee and having a quiet space to work in. My local library offers this with their study rooms to sign up for. So many podcasts, school work, video recordings, etc., have been done here. He separates the facts we can reasonably assert from what remains uncertain and explains why scrutinizing frame-by-frame video misses something essential about how humans behave under stress and fear.

Always remember that… You can have the worst days of your life and a few weeks later you can have the best day of your life. Keep pushing through.”  This is something that hits me hard when I reflect on it - and truthfully I do have a bit more time to reflect now a days. It get me thinking about how proud of my little 8 year old self would be of my 59 year old self.  That 8 year old is part of me and has been since I was that age. I do have plenty to be proud of that I have pushed through and not given up. It helps me to also connect with Seek Wiser (@SeekWiser_) that shared this: “Hardest thing right now is, finding people with pure intentions”  Part of our process needs to keep focusing in doing the right thing. Not only for our lives and the people we love, but our communities / country / the world!  My little 8 year old self has been in the front row seeing all the good and bad I've done. “Send Coach John a message”Found another fabulous learning moment from The Mindfulness Meditation Institute (@TrainingMindful) and it's all about Learning! They shared this and it's 7 words long:  “Be open to learn, unlearn and relearn.”  Learning is something I know I want to do every single thing I can to keep learning things, picking up things and growing with those things I find. There is plenty I know I need to unlearn for sure. What I need to do is to make sure the things I relearn are good things. “Send Coach John a message”I used to run “2 for 1 Specials” with my students when I would find a great article for them to read and reflect on with their summary + opinions and thoughts. The special was that I counted it also for one of their weekly articles that they had to turn in as well. I'm just reconnecting to a past part of my life that I loved very much… teaching… but we go on with this episode description. I found two uplifting posts and both of them were re-tweeted (reposted) from Mark Hickie (@MPHickie) who is someone that I connect with a lot on social media. First he shared this clip from Mel Robbins (@MelRobbins) where she was interviewing Trent Shelton (@TrentShelton) - the reminder that Mark connected with this clip, is something similar to what I would say too:  “To anyone who needs to hear this -  If you feel like you've lost your way, please know that better days are coming, my friend. Don't give up.” Such a simple and heart-felt message for anyone and everyone that needs the reminder to just keep going!! The second connection also from Mark was a clip from Inky Johnson (@InkyJohnson) and Mark's summary:   “It's not what you do … it's who you are! It's how you operate… how you treat people! It's not what gets you there … it's what keeps you there!  Do what's right … not what's easy! It's how you life your life!”  I found it very interesting that these two came just about back to back in my feed this morning. Both messages are tied into lifting me up and encouraging me - which I'm finding I need every day! I hope these help you too!! **

“Send Coach John a message”I have always loved mornings.  Looking back as a little kid, I knew I was a morning person early on in my life. This post from The Mindfulness Meditation Institute (@TrainingMindful) helped me to remember one of many reasons why I connect with mornings.  “Every morning, we get a chance to be different.  A chance to change. A chance to be better. Your past is your past. Leave it there. Get on with the future part.” - Nicole Williams said this. It's a reminder for all of us that we can start out our day differently than what we've done in the past. It's a new opportunity to continue great things or to start over with something new and great!  I like this reminder from the standpoint of always looking to be better and do better.  I need this reminder for the simple fact that I can start my days out in a positive and awesome direction. “Send Coach John a message”Found a great reminder for me personally that I need to read more and the importance of taking the time to do it! From TeacherGoals (@teachergoals) “Reading counts. - Reading forces you to be quiet in a world that no longer makes a place for that.” That is a quote from John Green.  It seems that the world is getting noisier and more hectic as each day passes. As I typed that thought out, I also know that probably many of the previous generations probably thought the same thing. I take time to start my day by reading a little bit. However, that is not where it should end for me. I need to take more time throughout my days to slow down and read more. I have plenty of things to read that are good for me. That inspires me. That makes me want to be better and do better in my life. When I do, I find that I can handle the “loudness” of the world a bit better. Maybe this is something for you to get re-connected with too? I know a good friend of mine really takes the time to pause life here and there to get some reading done. It brings joy to her soul and it helps her be her best for the life that she wants to live. She wrote a very nice note to my wife recently and my wife shared it with me. This helps me to want to do the same! “Send Coach John a message”A good morning of reflections and connecting. I found this one of many that I needed to let percolate a bit in my mind and heart. It comes from Seek Wiser (@SeekWiser_) and it reminds us that “Your greatest weapon is your mind. Train it to see opportunities, not obstacles.” So many things going on around us and throughout the world. I'm working hard to not get distracted by trying to keep up with all of it. I'm trying to focus in on being in the moment a bit more and seeing opportunities and not victim thinking of doubt, worry and not believing in myself.  If I can use this and connect with this thought, more moments that I have throughout each day - wow… there's going to be some good things coming from those choices.  Hope this works for you too my friends. **

“Send Coach John a message”Powerful and emotional continuation with honoring Martin Luther King, Jr., today - I found this from The Nobel Prize (@NobelPrize) where this quote was shared: "I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war." In this episode I shared a snippet of his Nobel Peace Prize speech, where he accepted the award on behalf of the American civil rights movement. Check out this link  bit.ly/3bJCQuc #MLKDay that has a bit more info about this time in our history.  Again, this is a reminder for me first of all, and anyone else that wants to listen - that we must be better! In all parts of living our lives. We are more alike than we are different. I know I need to keep getting better in all areas of my life. I know I want to have a life worth remembering that stood for doing good, helping others rather than hurting them & causing troubles. We humans are still fighting a battle of letting evil win over goodness. We have not learned the lesson yet and we have always struggled with it - just look throughout history. We have history to learn from. To improve. To fix the wrongs that we humans have created. “Send Coach John a message”Today being the day that we are honoring Martin Luther King, Jr., I found a post from Jon Gordon (@JonGordon11)  and his #MindsetMonday thoughts shared this quote:  “If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then walk, if you can't walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.” What a powerful reminder for every single day, but especially today! I found this catching my eye for many reasons - one for sure is that I need to keep moving forward in my attempt to not let negativity, anger, hatred, etc., enter into my heart and mind. Too much of the BS out there that I unfortunately let into my life and I can't let it go. This morning was no exception. People I know, like and thought I respected, keep putting stuff out there that simply sets to tear apart and cause trouble. I will keep moving forward, however I have to, so that I can keep encouraging others, putting out things that help people on their life's journey, along with trying to balance out the “crud” that people put out there. One of the things that I remind myself of is that the people that put out the “crud”, are really sharing what they are all about, the problems they have in life, the hurt they are going through, etc. It's worth my efforts every day for sure! **

“Send Coach John a message”I was reading a passage from Brian Johnson's book “Arete” and it's all about having “Rebound Days”. It's all about bouncing back from tough days. Great quote from George Leonard, where he reminds us to have a “willingness to take one step back for every two forward, sometimes vice-versa.”  It's a key to simply understand that this happens to everyone and at times, it's taking 4 or 5 steps backwards then going sideways and then eventually going in a forward direction. I was connecting with Jon Gordon too (@JonGordon11) and he had a leadership training session the past two days - free too! Those things are out there my friends. We need to keep investing in ourselves so that when we do get knocked backwards and down in life (which we will), we will have the sense, confidence and the tools to get back up and get going again. “Send Coach John a message”I came across a closing tag in a posting from my former principal where I was a teacher, and it read - ““Stay SHARP, Shorians! Safe...Helpful...Accountable...Responsible...Present”  First of all, our nickname was the Shorians (since our school and district is on the shores of a major lake here in Michigan and it's connected to ancient people who came from the shores of northern Europe & Russia). Our district has been around for over 100 years and we took the ideas of  "heroic optimism, confidence, and the transformative power of education, as described by the school.” This caught my eye for not only helping to remind young people about some powerful life skills, but also for those of us that maybe might not be classified as “young people”. In other words, this is for everyone to connect with. This is a great reminder on how important it is to connect with being safe, helpful, accountable, responsible and present; all throughout life. Again, our world needs people that have a bit more connection to how all of us are more alike than different and that we need each other a bit more than some people want us to believe. **

Host Jim Ellermeyer welcomes Shane Chojnacki — a professional fighter, trainer, health advocate, and pro wrestler known as Victor Benjamin — for an honest and deeply reflective conversation about resilience, choice, and personal responsibility. Shane opens up about growing up in an environment marked by addiction, violence, and scarcity, while still finding moments of community, guidance, and protection. Rather than becoming a victim of his circumstances, he made intentional decisions to stay grounded in sports, discipline, and work — even when easier and more destructive paths were readily available. Throughout this episode, Shane reflects on learning from the mistakes of others, refusing to settle for less, and choosing action over self-pity. Jim connects these experiences to mindfulness principles, recovery thinking, and the idea that real change comes from effort, behavior, and consistent choices — not just intention or wishful thinking. Topics explored include: Growing up without a safety net Making conscious “wise mind” choices Learning resilience through adversity Taking action instead of living in “ifs, buts, and maybes” Betting on yourself when others doubt you Speaking intention into existence through action This is Part 1 of a continuing conversation that sets the foundation for deeper discussions on identity, growth, and mindful living in future episodes.

“Send Coach John a message”From Positivity Inspired (@inspiringmyday) comes this quote from Benjamin Franklin - “Lost time is never found again.” To me, this is something that goes with a major game plan of mine, becoming more focused! I waste so much time - especially with all the distractions that are out there. I need to connect with those moments when they present themselves to also connect with the best choice on how to use my time in those moments. One thing for sure, today's “crud” going on around us - in the USA and around the world, can't be taking so much of my time up any longer. Send us a textHeadlines race, facts walk. We open by unpacking the Minneapolis shooting through settled law rather than viral outrage: why vehicles are treated as deadly weapons, what “clean shoot” means in legal terms, and where personal responsibility, intent, and public perception collide. It's an uncomfortable, necessary look at risk math and how narratives can erase accountability. From there we head west to California, where Gavin Newsom's “model state” story collides with stubborn numbers. We examine the population exodus, sky-high cost of living, and homelessness spending that lacks clear outcomes. We challenge the notion of a “strong” economy built on volatile revenue, ask why record education funding isn't translating to proficiency, and explore how climate goals buckle under grid costs when theory meets the bill. Crime stats may be improving on paper, but trust is earned on sidewalks and subways, not in slides. The theme is consistent: speeches are easy; results are hard.We close with the Ninth Circuit's decision to reinstate school secrecy policies on gender identity during appeal and what that means for families. Citing key Supreme Court precedents, clinical guidelines, and survey data, we make the case for bringing parents into the process—because family involvement is one of the strongest protective factors for youth mental health. Educators are essential, but they are not clinicians, and policies that force them into that role without parents set kids up to struggle. The better path blends compassion with caution: multidisciplinary care, transparent communication, and shared responsibility. If this conversation challenged you, that's the point. Design was supposed to be creative work. For a lot of designers, it's turned into endurance. In this episode, I'm joined by Vivianne Castillo to unpack how corporate design culture quietly rewards burnout, why endurance gets mistaken for professionalism, and how designers can start reclaiming creativity, agency, and choice. What if the behaviors that made you successful in design are the same ones slowly disconnecting you from yourself?Design culture loves to celebrate resilience, but too often what's really being rewarded is endurance: tolerating vague feedback, late pivots, constant urgency, and emotional labor without complaint. In this conversation, Vivianne Castillo shares why so many designers feel drained, disconnected, and quietly shrinking inside roles that were supposed to be creative and human-centered.Vivianne draws on her background in trauma counseling, psychology, and design to explain how corporate UX environments often reward unhealed coping patterns—people-pleasing, hyper-vigilance, over-responsibility, and self-silencing—while calling it “professionalism.” The work still gets done, praise still comes, but the cost is creativity, curiosity, and a sense of agency. We also talk about what it actually looks like to take that agency back. Not through dramatic exits or rage-quitting, but through small, intentional experiments: setting boundaries, asking better questions, redefining security, and exploring entrepreneurial paths without burning everything down. If your design job feels more like survival than creation, this episode is for you.Topics:• 04:57 – Vivian's Journey• 07:16 – The Toxicity in UX Culture• 19:14 – Reclaiming Agency as Designers• 29:20 – Unhealed Patterns in the Workplace• 31:13 – Understanding Corporate Culture and Personal Responsibility• 32:01 – Self-Silencing and Professionalism• 32:30 – Endurance vs. Resilience• 33:04 – Updating Unhealed Behaviors• 35:34 – Navigating Toxic Workplaces• 37:14 – The Illusion of Job Security• 43:09 – Entrepreneurship as a Healing Experience• 43:37 – The Walkout Event for UX ProfessionalsHelpful Links:• Connect with Vivianne on LinkedIn• Join the Walkout—Thanks for listening! “Send Coach John a message”I found so many things that I wanted to (and could have) share with you today. It could easily be 10 podcasts. This one connected with me first and it came from Mark Hickie (@MPHickie) and he shared this preview of what the post was all about:  “A message for today … Don't be afraid to embrace life, chase your dreams and live fully. Show up every day with passion and courage, and let nothing hold you back. Life is rare and beautiful—go all in with it!” His post moved me so much and I shared these thoughts on his post as I shared it with others: “I could do so much better with this for my life… I've had my moments of not being afraid, but not like I know I could have. Good news for me, I can show up today - right in this moment I have - with passion, courage, love, etc., and do my best with the task at hand.”  I shared a lot about this in today's episode and it honestly connects with a lot of the thoughts, feelings, ideas swirling around in my head from other items I have connected with this morning - but I hope (as I always do) this gets you thinking and then acting in a direction that helps you with the things going on in your life. “Send Coach John a message”I remember this guy from when I was much younger.  In fact around 10 when I remember hearing about Clint Hurdle (@ClintHurdle13) since he was drafted 9th overall by the Kansas City Royals in the mid 1970's. He has been around baseball for a long time and now he's sharing stories and lessons from the great game that can help all of us, whether we even like baseball, let alone play it. He shared this gem: “We're not finished products. Continue to grow. Look for growth opportunities every day.”  I love this quick and simple thought, that we as humans (especially this human), seem to have trouble understanding the validity of this thought. He has inspired me by his humility and love for helping others. Coach Hurdle has mentioned recently that he really looked to change and grow a couple of years ago, so he started out on his journey of writing a book. I got his book as a Christmas gift from my parents and I'm starting to read it. Which for me is also writing in the book, taking notes, underlining, sharing items from it, etc. A BIG suggestion I have for you is to go out and get your own copy that you can write in if you want to. “Send Coach John a message”I just came across a post from Kobe Bryant Stories & Motivation (@kobehighlight)  where there is a clip of Kobe sharing a thought that made a connection to a really good 2026 mentality: “Always keep going. The storm eventually ends.” - Kobe Bryant.  That whole idea of persistence is one that seems to keep popping up to remind me as to how important it is to have - it seems now more than ever in so many ways.  I'm working on this as I found this post. Trying to focus (my One Word for 2026) on doing little things better, all throughout my day. I want to focus on many of the areas that I know I need to put more effort in my life. The key is to zero in on one at a time. Reading, fitness, learning new skills, educating myself in different areas, relationships, my health, my attitude & responses to things, etc. Kobe is right - the “storm” does eventually pass and then there is usually a new one coming on the horizon. Just. Keep. Going. **
