A finales de los años veinte, Richard Upton Pickman ya era uno de los pintores de mayor talento de la ciudad de Boston. Sus obras estaban magistralmente ejecutadas, pero resultaban tan gráficas y truculentas a ojos de sus contemporáneos que provocaron la revocación de su membresía en el Boston Art Club y el rechazo público de la mayor parte de su entorno. De los inocentes paisajes de cementerio desolado, ruinas y naturalezas muertas, Pickman pasó a una etapa de figuración grotesca y blasfema, donde la sangre, la necrofilia y el horror campaban a sus anchas sobre el lienzo en forma de criaturas aberrantes y orgías de muerte y violencia. En octubre de 1927, el Maestro H.P.Lovecraft publicaría un relato basado en la biografía del talentoso pintor Richard Upton Pickman desaparecido misteriosamente de su casa de Boston un año antes. Los rumores en torno a Pickman agitaron entonces a sus colegas y conocidos de la escuela de arte, de la que había sido expulsado por las controvertidas y grotescas temáticas que poblaban su obra. Se habló de suicidio, se barajaron teorías estrambóticas sobre su paradero y por supuesto, se mencionó su locura... Porque como revela nuestro relato de esta noche, Pickman estaba en tratamiento psiquiátrico en el momento de su desaparción, después de todo, qué se puede esperar de un hombre que dedica su asombroso talento a retratar escenas demenciales de muerte y oscuridad... Y es que si lo vemos con persepctiva el Arte ha sido asiduamente refugio de todo lo que se ha considerado irracional, excentrico o mentalmente insano a lo largo de la historia. A menudo Lovecraft perpetuaba esta tradición quijotesca representando personajes incomprendidos que desarrollan fobias tras tomar contacto con el horror sobrenatural, pero la locura o lo que se entendía por ella en siglos pasados, va más allá de la enfermedad mental en la literatura de lovecraft. Se trata de una parte inseparable de su unvierso, que conforma un complejo panorama en el que conviven los melancólicos, los paranóicos, los excéntricos y los “marginados”, porque los trastornos mentales protagonizan también algunos de los episodios más brillantes y fecundos de la Historia de la humanidad, aunque siempre marcando el estigma que acarrea la propia comprensión y aceptación de sus protagonistas. Acompañennos pues amigos, adentrense junto a nosotros en los oscuros callejones de los suburbios de Boston y visiten su estudio clandestino. His works are brilliantly executed, but so graphic that they result in the revocation of his membership in the Boston Art Club and he is shunned by his fellow artists. The narrator is a friend of Pickman, who, after the artist's mysterious disappearance, relates to another acquaintance how he was taken on a tour of Pickman's personal gallery, hidden away in a run-down backwater slum of the city. As the two delved deeper into Pickman's mind and art, the rooms seemed to grow ever more evil and the paintings ever more horrific, ending with a final enormous painting of an unearthly, red-eyed and vaguely canine humanoid balefully chewing on a human victim. A noise sent Pickman running outside the room with a gun while the narrator reached out to unfold what looked like a small piece of rolled paper attached to the monstrous painting. The narrator heard some shots and Pickman walked back in with the smoking gun, telling a story of shooting some rats, and the two men departed. Afterwards the narrator realized that he had nervously grabbed and put the rolled paper in his pocket when the shots were fired. He unrolled the paper to reveal that it is a photograph not of the background of the painting, but of the subject. Pickman drew his inspirations not from a diseased imagination, but from monsters that were very much real.
