Critical Weather Alert: Black Ice and Wildfire Risks Across the Nation

The Emergency Management Network Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 25, 2026 5:45

The primary focus of today's EM Morning Brief is the juxtaposition of hazardous winter travel conditions in parts of the Great Lakes and Northeast against an elevated wildfire risk across the High Plains and South Central states. We commence our discussion by highlighting the National Weather Service's acknowledgment of gusty winds and exceedingly low humidity, which significantly heighten the potential for rapid grass fire spread. Concurrently, we address the implications of ongoing winter weather, particularly in the Northeast, where light snowfall and refreezing have engendered treacherous road conditions and black ice. Furthermore, we examine the severe wildfire activity within Big Cypress National Preserve in Florida, which has necessitated area closures due to smoke impacts. Additionally, we note the operational constraints faced by the Federal Emergency Management Agency amidst a funding shutdown, which limits its capacity to respond effectively to these unfolding crises.Takeaways:* The current hazardous winter travel conditions are primarily affecting the Great Lakes and Northeast regions.* Elevated wildfire risks persist in the High Plains and South Central states due to low humidity and strong winds.* The ongoing winter storm recovery efforts in California involve coordination for sheltering and essential services.* Florida's Big Cypress National Preserve is experiencing significant wildfire activity impacting air quality and local access.* The National Weather Service has issued multiple red flag warnings highlighting the potential for rapid wildfire spread.* The overall travel conditions across various states are complicated by winter weather and the risk of black ice.Sources[Cal OES | https://www.wildfirerecovery.caloes.ca.gov/][NWS | https://www.weather.gov/][AP | https://apnews.com/article/bd0e342070154e27dff32d805ab2ba46][NPS | https://www.nps.gov/bicy/learn/news/wildfire-update-big-cypress-national-preserve.htm][NPS Alerts & Conditions | https://www.nps.gov/bicy/planyourvisit/conditions.htm][Big Rapids News | https://www.bigrapidsnews.com/news/article/michigan-clipper-snow-tonight-february-24-21938701.php][KOKH/OKC Fox | https://okcfox.com/news/local/oklahoma-emergency-operations-center-remains-active-as-wildfires-impact-the-state-statewide-burn-ban-relief-donations-charity-damages-ranchers][NWS Fire Weather | https://www.weather.gov/fire/][Texas A&M Forest Service | https://tfsweb.tamu.edu/wildfire-and-other-disasters/current-wildfire-status/][NWS Red Flag Warning Summary | https://www.weather.gov/wwamap/wwatxtget.php?cwa=usa&wwa=red+flag+warning][MySA | https://www.mysanantonio.com/news/austin/article/i35-grass-fire-21939119.php] This is a public episode. Yes but I think we can cut the Wayans Bros. some slack for this oversite due to the restraint they showed with their film's title by name dropping "Higher Learning," "Poetic Justice," and "Jungle Fever" in the film's tagline rather than jamming them in the title as well. 0:00 - Trivial Trivia 21:02 - Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice In the Hood review 56:56 - Next episode's mandated movie We'll be back in two weeks with another mandated movie.  If you'd like to watch it, click here to find where it's streaming or available to rent. While rain, freezing rain and snow are still impacting Alaskans, the bigger impacts are shifting to the roads into Friday night. Numerous school districts across Southcentral Alaska, including in Anchorage, the Kenai Peninsula, and the Mat-Su, closed their doors on Friday due to ongoing weather conditions that have created hazardous and icy roads. For this special year-ender episode, Newslaundry's Abhinandan Sekhri and Manisha Pande and The News Minute's Dhanya Rajendran and Pooja Prasanna are joined by columnist and media critic Santosh Desai. The conversation begins with a wrap of the Indian media ecosystem this year. Santosh says, “Institutions are struggling to retain credibility and resist pressure.” Dhanya argues that mainstream media exerts significant influence over people, but on social media, the results vary. Discussing the state of the media more specifically in Karnataka, Pooja notes that although it's “heavily compromised”, it can still be seen as a “lesser evil” compared to the Hindi and English media.Manisha argues that, in terms of news consumption, the internet can be very ruthless – in contrast to legacy media, which does not have to face the crash and burn. She cites the example of Beer Biceps, whose rapid rise and fall illustrate this ruthlessness. Some influencers, Dhanya says, have also realised that “credibility comes with consistency”. On the economic front, Abhinandan explains, “It is the lethargy of legacy media that is reflected in their belief about how business is done – in large spaces and studios. Hence, sustainability and viewership become two completely different things.”The panel also discusses advertisements that make them nostalgic. Dhanya says, “Now, we pay to remove ads. I cannot remember the last time I watched an ad.” Meanwhile, Abhinandan notes, “The death of ads is the death of jingles, which in turn traces to the death of radio.”While discussing Arnab Goswami's recent shows that questioned the central government, Pooja remarks, “This man can damage the country by stooping so low, but all it takes for him to be viewed as a crusader is the targeting of a soft issue as a larger strategy.”This and a lot more. Alex Payne was born in Uzbekistan and raised in a post Soviet environment before living briefly in Moscow. He moved to the U.S. at 16 and talks about learning to rebuild from scratch, then stacking real life work experience before ever putting on a uniform. He didn't start policing at 21. He entered the job later, after corporate work and customer service, and he's direct about why that mattered. In his view, the street doesn't care how motivated you are, it cares whether you can manage people, stay calm, and make decisions when somebody's worst day becomes your problem.Alex walks through a law enforcement career that gave him purpose and also tested his trust in the organization behind the badge. He describes calls that never leave you, including scenes involving children, and he doesn't pretend the job is clean or predictable. He also recounts being ambushed and how that reinforced a mindset he repeats throughout the conversation: tomorrow isn't guaranteed, so don't live on autopilot. The turning point in his story is an in-custody death that he says triggered a long stretch of internal pressure. He explains how an internal affairs finding he labels “administrator disapproval” became fuel for a civil lawsuit. He talks about the depositions, the case dragging on into 2020, and being on his way out while he still had an open lawsuit and multiple internal investigations. He describes feeling more worried about his department than working nights in South Central, and he ties that to why he lateraled and rebuilt his career in Santa Monica. He says those years became the best stretch of his time on the job, and it's also where his personal life changed, meeting his wife and starting a family. Now retired, he lays out what he does today, business first. He runs a turnkey commercial asset operation that designs, furnishes, and clears out offices and buildings, including full liquidations. He also mentions a logistics company, a media company, and his own podcast. Additionally, damaging winds are impacting South Central regions, compounding the challenges faced by restoration efforts in areas previously affected by severe weather. As we navigate these multifaceted weather phenomena, I urge all listeners to exercise caution and remain informed about local conditions.Takeaways:* The Pacific atmospheric river is significantly impacting Washington and Oregon, leading to multiple flood warnings. * Residents are urged to avoid flooded roads and remain vigilant for potential landslides in steep areas. * A fast-moving winter storm is expected to bring severe weather conditions across parts of the Midwest. * High winds are causing additional challenges in South Central Alaska, with ongoing power restoration efforts indicated. * Winter storm warnings are in effect for several states, including Minnesota and Michigan, with substantial snowfall predicted. * Ongoing flooding concerns persist in western Washington as river flood warnings remain active through Friday. Chris Ball is a real one — born in South Central LA, athlete, hustler, legacy operator, and now the founder and CEO of Ball Family Farms, one of the most respected cannabis brands in California. Before the licenses and the spotlight, Chris was deep in the traditional market. A federal sting — Operation Sudden Fall — caught him up, and he sat down for a few months while fighting his case. Instead of folding, Chris leveled up: he got a steady job, stayed on good behavior, and when the case finally went to trial, the judge gave him time served because of the way he carried himself throughout the process. From there, he came home with a mission. Chris became one of the first Social Equity cultivators in Los Angeles and built Ball Family Farms from scratch — a brand built on discipline, clean product, authenticity, and family-rooted values. Today, their strains like Nino Brown, Daniel LaRusso, and Clubber Lang are staples in shops across the state. This episode is street, inspiring, and real — a blueprint for turning pressure into purpose and legacy hustle into licensed success.⸻

On this episode of the Data Center Frontier Show, DartPoints CEO Scott Willis joins Editor in Chief Matt Vincent to discuss why regional data centers are becoming central to the future of AI and digital infrastructure. Fresh off his appearance on the Distributed Edge panel at the 2025 DCF Trends Summit, Willis breaks down how DartPoints is positioning itself in non-tier-one markets across the Midwest, Southeast, and South Central regions—locations he believes will play an increasingly critical role as AI workloads move closer to users. Willis explains that DartPoints' strategy hinges on a deeply interconnected regional footprint built around carrier-rich facilities and strong fiber connectivity. This fabric is already supporting latency-sensitive workloads such as AI inference and specialized healthcare applications, and Willis expects that demand to accelerate as enterprises seek performance closer to population centers. Following a recent recapitalization with NOVA Infrastructure and Orion Infrastructure Capital, DartPoints has launched four new expansion sites designed from the ground up for higher-density, AI-oriented workloads. These facilities target rack densities from 30 kW to 120 kW and are sized in the 10–50 MW range—large enough for meaningful HPC and AI deployments but nimble enough to move faster than hyperscale builds constrained by long power queues. Speed to market is a defining advantage for DartPoints. Willis emphasizes the company's focus on brownfield opportunities where utility infrastructure already exists, reducing deployment timelines dramatically. For cooling, DartPoints is designing flexible environments that leverage advanced air systems for 30–40 kW racks and liquid cooling for higher densities, ensuring the ability to support the full spectrum of enterprise, HPC, and edge-adjacent AI needs. Willis also highlights the importance of community partnership. DartPoints' facilities have smaller footprints and lower power impact than hyperscale campuses, allowing the company to serve as a local economic catalyst while minimizing noise and aesthetic concerns. Looking ahead to 2026, Willis sees the industry entering a phase where AI demand becomes broader and more distributed, making regional markets indispensable. DartPoints plans to continue expanding through organic growth and targeted M&A while maintaining its focus on interconnection, high-density readiness, and rapid, community-aligned deployment. Tune in to hear how DartPoints is shaping the next chapter of distributed digital infrastructure—and why the market is finally moving toward the regional edge model Willis has championed.

Ep. 78 - LAPD Gang Detective Tim Pearce reflects on choosing law enforcement; working the CRASH Gang Unit with his partner Kristina Ripatti who would become his wife; and on the “Officer Needs Help” call that changed everything for them both.Tim joined LAPD in 1996 in the wake of the Rodney King riots and the OJ Simpson trial working Skid Row as a rookie and later what was then known as South Central. Tim was paired with Kristina who he met in the Academy as patrol partners and later as partners on the CRASH Gang Unit assigned to the Rollin' 30s Harlem Crips. We discuss all elements that go into collecting gang intel – the cars they drive, who they hang out with, their monikers, their secret monikers. He shares the hair-raising incident he responded to with Kristina that brought him face to face with a gangster and his shotgun and the millisecond decision that saved Tim's life.Tim and Kristina would marry in 2003 soon after have a daughter. They remained on the Gang Unit working separate districts. Then, on June 3, 2006, Tim and his partner responded to the “Officer Needs Help” call. That officer, he would soon learn, was Kristina. This is Tim's story. It's Kristina's story. It's also the story of what all of you risk every time you hit the streets. It is my feeling that the experiences of officers who have been injured in the line of duty and the impact on them and their loved ones is rarely told.It is important to note that through this experience, Tim has been inspired to help law enforcement in a unique way. He has created a gunshot wound simulator called Accuracy Under Fire — a training tool designed to help officers respond while injured and under direct attack. Tim believes AUFIRE will help save law enforcement and military lives. While issues like climate change receive constant calls for coverage, they draw little financial support. “Everybody's always asking why you guys are not reporting on the environment… but that is one fund people hardly pay,” she says. Manisha adds that the future role of journalism lies in helping audiences think critically in an “age of reels and feels.” “While others can trigger emotions, journalists can provide context, history, and perspective,” she says. On the replacement for legacy media, Josy says, “What you people are doing at The News Minute and Newslaundry, to me, is a great laboratory of experiment. You are actually bringing journalism back as the intellectual property for which people should pay,” he says. Jamal Watson's journey from South Central to Hollywood executive exemplifies the power of storytelling to transform lives. After finding inspiration in film during his youth, he started at Sony Pictures as a tour guide in 2003, building industry connections that would prove invaluable. His career accelerated through roles at Deluxe Film Services and a pivotal 2010 internship at Overbrook Entertainment, where he spent a decade rising from intern to Vice President. During this time, he produced acclaimed projects including "SPRINTER" (ABFF winner, African Academy Award nominee), "HALA" (Sundance and TIFF selection), Disney's "ALADDIN," and Netflix's "AMEND."  At Monkeypaw Productions, Watson continued championing diverse voices through projects like the "SCARE TACTICS" reboot and upcoming film "HIM", which opens in theaters on September 19th. He also launched a music label imprint with Interscope Records, expanding his influence across entertainment sectors.
