Ted Lewis built Ted's Budz into California's top flower brand. He started with no money, no corporate background, and a distribution license he wasn't sure what to do with.Ted Lewis grew up between Omaha, Nebraska and half a dozen cities across California, attended six high schools, and landed at Cal State Northridge on a biology track before a Bay Area roommate showed him what the game actually looked like. He opened a Prop 215 dispensary in South Central, lost around $60,000 learning the hard way, slept on a futon in the back to hold it down, got broken into twice, and never stopped.What came after is the real story. Ted pivoted to growing in a Victorville rental house with 15 lights and his cousin Trey, chased genetics obsessively through online seed communities, connected with Dubz Garden and Backpackboyz, and handed Juan a Cookie  sample through a car window that changed everything, and eventually landed a California distribution license with zero corporate experience and one mandate: only sell what you would smoke yourself. He did his own driving. Thursday routes from LA to San Diego, 4am runs north to the Bay, a MacBook in hand for manifest corrections at every shop. I would so appreciate that.(00:00) – Kenneth's Early InfluencesWe start things off with a look at Kenneth's journey from a childhood in the South Central projects to an award-winning Hollywood career. “Something just came over me, and I said, you know what? This is it, I'm kind of done,” he recalls a pivotal moment early in life. “I had to make a decision as to what I wanted to do with the rest of my life, and, you know, I've always liked music.” He tells us about his early career in post-production sound and a chance encounter with producer J.R. DeLang. “He said, ‘That's great, but you can't come in and just sit in that chair. You've got to work your way up to that.'” Kenneth tells us of their first meeting. “He said, ‘we've got two positions that usually work their way up to being [soundtrack] mixers, and that's a dialogue editor and a sound effects editor.'”(12:45) – The Journey to Sound DesignKenneth tells us more about his work as a sound designer and the art of creating impossible sounds, such as the wild inventions in the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids series. “They were always creating these contraptions and things that don't exist,” he says, “so you had to figure it out in your mind. You'd have to say, ‘Well, what do I think it sounds like?' Or what should it sound like? And then you start putting pieces together.” He recalls his sound editing work from a memorable scene in the award-winning movie Road to Perdition and the thought process behind it. “We started out with just hearing the sounds of winter,” Kenneth explains. “And then he tries to start the car, and the car is not really functioning and he's having an issue starting it. And so that whole sequence of him trying to start the car and then finally getting it started was, it was just really beautiful.”(25:30) – The Power of SilenceAs the first half of our conversation wraps up, Kenneth emphasizes the importance of testing sound work in its native format as well as the studio. “I think a lot of times people don't do that,” he says. “They don't play it back in the medium that it's meant to be played on. They just play it in the room and it sounds fantastic, right? But then when you squash it all down to a stereo file, it will sound different.” We talk about what goes into setting up an ideal sound studio and about the importance of “tuning” a room. “Say there's a dip in the low end,” he explains, “and the room hasn't been compensated. We're going to push the low end, which means that possibly when it gets to another playback format, the bass is going to be really loud. In this episode of Teach Me, Teacher, I sit down with Jacob Adams, founder and executive director of Inner Spark Learning Lab, to explore what he calls the Disconnection Crisis in education. Throughout the conversation, we dig into why so many well-intentioned reforms fall short, what educators often miss when trying to improve student outcomes, and how shifting the focus from "fixing students" to redesigning the learning environment can transform the culture of a school. Jacob also challenges some of the dominant narratives in education reform, pushing us to ask whether we're even asking the right questions in the first place. Instead of focusing solely on performance metrics, what might happen if we prioritized relevance, relationships, and student voice? For educators feeling the strain of the current moment, this episode offers both a critique of the systems we work within and a hopeful look at what schools could become when connection moves to the center of the work.
