What happens when nonprofits stop centering funders and start centering relationships? In this week's episode of Nonprofit Nation, Julia sits down with Jacob Adams, founder of Inner Spark Learning Lab, to unpack what he calls the “Disconnection Crisis” — a pattern showing up across education, philanthropy, and social impact work. Drawing from years of experience working with more than 40,000 Black and Brown young people in South Central and East Los Angeles, Jacob shares why so many traditional reform models fail to create lasting change and what becomes possible when organizations build systems rooted in trust, listening, and authentic community partnership.Together, they explore: ✨ Why transactional fundraising weakens long-term impact ✨ How disconnection shapes philanthropy and funding decisions ✨ What authentic community partnership really looks like ✨ Why relationship-centered leadership matters more than ever ✨ How nonprofits can stay mission-aligned while navigating funding pressuresThis thoughtful and inspiring conversation challenges conventional nonprofit narratives and offers a refreshing framework for leaders who want to deepen trust, strengthen impact, and rethink how meaningful change actually happens.

Send us Fan MailWe all go a little mad sometimes, but we've gotta cover 1996's Scream. In this powerful episode, hosts Steve and Ken Roybal sit down with Andrew Gonzalez, a 20-year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) who spent the majority of his career working the intense 77th Street Division and specialized gang units. Andrew pulls back the curtain on the evolution of modern street gangs, revealing how social media and encrypted applications have shifted criminal enterprises into highly sophisticated, clandestine corporate-style structures. He drops hard-hitting truths about the daily realities of policing in South Central, what it feels like to face a loaded gun in a split-second shootout, and the harrowing side of responding to violent crime scenes. Beyond the tactical talk, this interview explores the heavy mental health toll of law enforcement. Andrew opens up about his personal battles with PTSD, depression, and human suffering, sparking an important conversation with Ken (himself a retired LAPD veteran) on the critical importance of modern police resiliency programs, mental health resources, and catching trauma before it overflows. Tune in to hear an authentic, raw perspective on the human being behind the badge, the undeniable power of a strong family unit, and how Andrew is now giving back through his first-responder business, Battle Cry Gear. This episode's guest is an award–winning supervising sound designer whose groundbreaking work has shaped the sound of some of television and film's most iconic projects, including Netflix's hit series Forever and Kevin Hart's animated comedy Lil Kev. Born and raised in South Central Los Angeles, he rose through the ranks of Hollywood post-production, breaking barriers as one of the few Black sound designers in the industry and earning multiple MPSE Golden Reel Awards and Emmy nominations. Today, he's not only redefining sonic storytelling but also championing greater diversity behind the scenes, ensuring the voices shaping what we hear are as dynamic as the stories themselves. His name is Kenneth Johnson, and in this episode, we'll discover how he transforms silence into emotion and builds powerful storytelling through every note, tone, and texture. As always, if you have questions for my guest, you're welcome to reach out through the links in the show notes. I would so appreciate that.(00:00) – Kenneth's Early InfluencesWe start things off with a look at Kenneth's journey from a childhood in the South Central projects to an award-winning Hollywood career. “Something just came over me, and I said, you know what? This is it, I'm kind of done,” he recalls a pivotal moment early in life. “I had to make a decision as to what I wanted to do with the rest of my life, and, you know, I've always liked music.” He tells us about his early career in post-production sound and a chance encounter with producer J.R. DeLang. “He said, ‘That's great, but you can't come in and just sit in that chair. You've got to work your way up to that.'” Kenneth tells us of their first meeting. “He said, ‘we've got two positions that usually work their way up to being [soundtrack] mixers, and that's a dialogue editor and a sound effects editor.'”(12:45) – The Journey to Sound DesignKenneth tells us more about his work as a sound designer and the art of creating impossible sounds, such as the wild inventions in the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids series. “They were always creating these contraptions and things that don't exist,” he says, “so you had to figure it out in your mind. You'd have to say, ‘Well, what do I think it sounds like?' Or what should it sound like? And then you start putting pieces together.” He recalls his sound editing work from a memorable scene in the award-winning movie Road to Perdition and the thought process behind it. “We started out with just hearing the sounds of winter,” Kenneth explains. “And then he tries to start the car, and the car is not really functioning and he's having an issue starting it. And so that whole sequence of him trying to start the car and then finally getting it started was, it was just really beautiful.”(25:30) – The Power of SilenceAs the first half of our conversation wraps up, Kenneth emphasizes the importance of testing sound work in its native format as well as the studio. “I think a lot of times people don't do that,” he says. “They don't play it back in the medium that it's meant to be played on. They just play it in the room and it sounds fantastic, right? But then when you squash it all down to a stereo file, it will sound different.” We talk about what goes into setting up an ideal sound studio and about the importance of “tuning” a room. “Say there's a dip in the low end,” he explains, “and the room hasn't been compensated. We're going to push the low end, which means that possibly when it gets to another playback format, the bass is going to be really loud. So we try to mix in a neutral environment where everything is flat.”Episode SummaryKenneth discusses his childhood and transition to film and television sound design. We discuss the challenge of creating sound effects for things that don't exist.Kenneth emphasizes the importance of maintaining an ideal studio sound space.Tune in for next week's episode as we discuss how Kenneth puts sound to work in shaping a narrative, how his role as a sound designer has changed since digital sound editing became the norm, and his advice for people who are just starting out in post-production and sound editing.Connect with the Audio Branding Podcast:Book your project with Voice Overs and Vocals by visiting https://voiceoversandvocals.comConnect with me on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/jodikrangle/Watch the Audio Branding Podcast on YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/c/JodiKrangleVOConnect with me on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jodikrangle/Leave the Audio Branding Podcast a review at https://lovethepodcast.com/audiobranding (Thank you!)Share your passion effectively with these Tips for Sounding Your Best as a Podcast Guest!https://voiceoversandvocals.com/tips-for-sounding-your-best-as-a-podcast-guest/Get my Top Five Tips for Implementing an Intentional Audio Strategyhttps://voiceoversandvocals.com/audio-branding-strategy/Editing/Production by Humberto Franco - https://humbertofranco.com/This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: OP3 - https://op3.dev/privacy

Siamo nell'Ohio, Stati Uniti, estate 2022. Un rapper finito nel dimenticatoio da vent'anni vive tranquillamente nella sua casa in campagna con la moglie e i due figli. Send us Fan MailThe hardest truths in public life are usually the ones we've trained ourselves not to see. We start by talking with Cornel West about Race Matters and the reality that racial injustice is not only about explosive moments on the news, but also about the “quiet riot” of daily suffering in South Central, Harlem, and any place where poverty and despair are treated as normal. We unpack why hope is not optimism, why small victories of love and care count, and how a renewed public sphere and real political courage matter if America is serious about racial justice. From there we widen the lens to foreign policy and ask a question that never stops generating heat: why does the United States support Israel so consistently? We trace the long arc from Christian Zionism and settler colonial history to Cold War strategy, military aid, and intelligence alignment. Along the way, we examine how media framing shapes what the public is allowed to call an invasion, an occupation, or a peace offer, and how “minimal honesty” might change what leaders can get away with. The episode closes on a moral note, pairing a humanist warning about greed and despair with scripture on suffering and endurance, not as an escape from politics but as a reminder that language, conscience, and solidarity still matter. If you care about race in America, Cornel West, public policy, U.S. Israel relations, and human rights, this conversation is built to challenge your assumptions without asking you to turn off your compassion. Ravel möter Ornette Coleman i South Central, Los Angeles.Avsnittet innehåller även möten med bland andra Snoop Dogg, Leon Ware, Stanley Clarke och Larry Graham.

What happens when the biggest problems in education—chronic absenteeism, failing grades, teacher burnout, and families leaving schools—aren't actually the core issues at all? In this episode of Teach Me, Teacher, I sit down with Jacob Adams, founder and executive director of Inner Spark Learning Lab, to explore what he calls the Disconnection Crisis in education. Check out their Inside Out Summit. March 19- 9:00-1:00 PT. Free virtual conference for folks who want to transform education from the inside out. For years, schools have chased outcomes—attendance rates, test scores, graduation numbers—while layering on interventions meant to fix them. But what if those outcomes are only symptoms of something deeper? Jacob argues that underneath many of the challenges educators face today is a growing sense of disconnection between students, families, educators, and the institutions meant to serve them. Drawing from nearly a decade of work with more than 40,000 Black and Brown young people in South Central and East Los Angeles, Jacob shares how his organization has focused not on scaling fast, but on going deep—rethinking learning environments from inside existing schools. The work centers on a simple but powerful idea: if students don't feel connected to their school, no intervention will stick. Throughout the conversation, we dig into why so many well-intentioned reforms fall short, what educators often miss when trying to improve student outcomes, and how shifting the focus from "fixing students" to redesigning the learning environment can transform the culture of a school. Jacob also challenges some of the dominant narratives in education reform, pushing us to ask whether we're even asking the right questions in the first place. Instead of focusing solely on performance metrics, what might happen if we prioritized relevance, relationships, and student voice? For educators feeling the strain of the current moment, this episode offers both a critique of the systems we work within and a hopeful look at what schools could become when connection moves to the center of the work. If we want schools to truly work for students, families, and teachers, the real question might not be how we fix outcomes—but how we rebuild connection. Listen in.

A very important movie that is silently out dated and can be problematic BUT still has a message worth hearing and absorbing. And the C.I.A. might have had a hand in this...ahhh just saying...
The Wayans Brothers are up to bat with the parody game this week but can they do better than Chris Rock last week? This is a first time watch for Chris and I am dying to know which film he prefers. The primary focus of today's EM Morning Brief is the juxtaposition of hazardous winter travel conditions in parts of the Great Lakes and Northeast against an elevated wildfire risk across the High Plains and South Central states. We commence our discussion by highlighting the National Weather Service's acknowledgment of gusty winds and exceedingly low humidity, which significantly heighten the potential for rapid grass fire spread. Concurrently, we address the implications of ongoing winter weather, particularly in the Northeast, where light snowfall and refreezing have engendered treacherous road conditions and black ice. Furthermore, we examine the severe wildfire activity within Big Cypress National Preserve in Florida, which has necessitated area closures due to smoke impacts. Additionally, we note the operational constraints faced by the Federal Emergency Management Agency amidst a funding shutdown, which limits its capacity to respond effectively to these unfolding crises.Takeaways:* The current hazardous winter travel conditions are primarily affecting the Great Lakes and Northeast regions.* Elevated wildfire risks persist in the High Plains and South Central states due to low humidity and strong winds.* The ongoing winter storm recovery efforts in California involve coordination for sheltering and essential services.* Florida's Big Cypress National Preserve is experiencing significant wildfire activity impacting air quality and local access.* The National Weather Service has issued multiple red flag warnings highlighting the potential for rapid wildfire spread.* The overall travel conditions across various states are complicated by winter weather and the risk of black ice.Sources[Cal OES | https://www.wildfirerecovery.caloes.ca.gov/][NWS | https://www.weather.gov/][AP | https://apnews.com/article/bd0e342070154e27dff32d805ab2ba46][NPS | https://www.nps.gov/bicy/learn/news/wildfire-update-big-cypress-national-preserve.htm][NPS Alerts & Conditions | https://www.nps.gov/bicy/planyourvisit/conditions.htm][Big Rapids News | https://www.bigrapidsnews.com/news/article/michigan-clipper-snow-tonight-february-24-21938701.php][KOKH/OKC Fox | https://okcfox.com/news/local/oklahoma-emergency-operations-center-remains-active-as-wildfires-impact-the-state-statewide-burn-ban-relief-donations-charity-damages-ranchers][NWS Fire Weather | https://www.weather.gov/fire/][Texas A&M Forest Service | https://tfsweb.tamu.edu/wildfire-and-other-disasters/current-wildfire-status/][NWS Red Flag Warning Summary | https://www.weather.gov/wwamap/wwatxtget.php?cwa=usa&wwa=red+flag+warning][MySA | https://www.mysanantonio.com/news/austin/article/i35-grass-fire-21939119.php] This is a public episode. Welcome to Movie Mandates, a review show in which sibling cinephiles Andrew and Keleigh force each other to watch movies according to a monthly theme! Parody month concludes with Keleigh's mandated movie: DON'T BE A MENACE TO SOUTH CENTRAL WHILE DRINKING YOUR JUICE IN THE HOOD. Now, I know what you're thinking. It was called "Menace II Society" so shouldn't the title be "Don't Be a Menace II South Central While Drinking Your Juice In the Hood"? Yes but I think we can cut the Wayans Bros. some slack for this oversite due to the restraint they showed with their film's title by name dropping "Higher Learning," "Poetic Justice," and "Jungle Fever" in the film's tagline rather than jamming them in the title as well. 0:00 - Trivial Trivia 21:02 - Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice In the Hood review 56:56 - Next episode's mandated movie We'll be back in two weeks with another mandated movie. For this special year-ender episode, Newslaundry's Abhinandan Sekhri and Manisha Pande and The News Minute's Dhanya Rajendran and Pooja Prasanna are joined by columnist and media critic Santosh Desai. The conversation begins with a wrap of the Indian media ecosystem this year. Santosh says, “Institutions are struggling to retain credibility and resist pressure.” Dhanya argues that mainstream media exerts significant influence over people, but on social media, the results vary. Discussing the state of the media more specifically in Karnataka, Pooja notes that although it's “heavily compromised”, it can still be seen as a “lesser evil” compared to the Hindi and English media.Manisha argues that, in terms of news consumption, the internet can be very ruthless – in contrast to legacy media, which does not have to face the crash and burn. She cites the example of Beer Biceps, whose rapid rise and fall illustrate this ruthlessness. Some influencers, Dhanya says, have also realised that “credibility comes with consistency”. On the economic front, Abhinandan explains, “It is the lethargy of legacy media that is reflected in their belief about how business is done – in large spaces and studios. Hence, sustainability and viewership become two completely different things.”The panel also discusses advertisements that make them nostalgic. Dhanya says, “Now, we pay to remove ads. I cannot remember the last time I watched an ad.” Meanwhile, Abhinandan notes, “The death of ads is the death of jingles, which in turn traces to the death of radio.”While discussing Arnab Goswami's recent shows that questioned the central government, Pooja remarks, “This man can damage the country by stooping so low, but all it takes for him to be viewed as a crusader is the targeting of a soft issue as a larger strategy.”This and a lot more.
