What is the secret of the curiously empty seat on the Embankment between the Avenue and Westminster Bridge? This original recording is an audio presentation by Jasper L'Estrange for EnCrypted Horror. “ON THE EMBANKMENT” by Hugh E. Wright (1919).CREATOR'S NOTE: Due to some copyright confusion, Spotify have alerted me to the fact that 61 episodes of the podcast (basically most of the early episodes that feature a piece of music called "The Black Waltz" as a theme tune) may soon disappear from the platform. I am trying to resolve this. The composer allows his music to be used under a creative commons licence provided he receives attribution, so I'm not sure what's going on. But if you find episodes disappearing from Spotify...that's what's happened!

A bus driver recalls the highs and lows of his life in this dark and blackly comic monologue. The stories I choose to read I choose because I like them - not that they're all perfect or that I agree with all the sentiments expressed, but because I find something in them to recommend them. If I were to read only what I consider to be the few perfect vintage horror stories I should have recorded about twenty and stopped. But everything I read has something in it that appeals to my taste. Tastes differ, so you might not agree with my choices, but that doesn't make you right.

NOTE ABOUT PRONUNCIATION OF "SLOUGH" A number of helpful people have gotten in touch to tell me I should have pronounced "slough" as "slew" as that is how it is pronounced in that part of the world. However, it was not a word known to me (not used much in British English, at least not in the sense meant in this story) so I referred to Merriam-Webster dictionary which suggested US speakers (except in New England) would pronounce the word "slew" or "sloo", but added that British English speakers would usually say "slau" (like the English town) even if they were refererring to an American swamp. As a British English speaker myself that was what I went with. As I'm rather tired of people assuming I don't do any research when I record these damn stories, I thought I'd set the record straight. No need for anyone else to tell me it should be "slew". Any issues, take it up with the dictionary people.

CREATOR'S NOTE: My recordings contain a mixture of audio narration, sound effects, and music…because that's what I like to make and listen to. It's not everyone's cup of tea or coffee, but luckily we exist in a world of almost limitless choice, so if it hurts your ears or makes you nauseous, feel free to move on to something else, no need to leave a comment. I try and do voices and accents to distinguish between characters as it can help the listener, but I'm not Meryl Streep, nor have I ever claimed to be. Wish I had her money though. I do a wide variety of mostly vintage (early 20th century) stories on this channel. Naturally, the stories reflect the attitudes and language of the time. They didn't know any better. But they did dress smarter and look good in hats. Sometimes pet animals die in these stories (though not in this one). When it happens, try not to weep, just hold your own pet animal a little tighter (but not too tightly).

If this is likely to disturb you, again look elsewhere. The stories I read are very old and sometimes contain attitudes and language you might find upsetting. They didn't know any better, just as you don't know what future generations will find objectionable about the things you say and do. Keep that in mind and enjoy instead a fascinating glimpse into a time gone by.
One evening at the Mermaid Club, Clayton shares his strange supernatural encounter of the night before. But has he learned too much from his conversation with a ghost? This original recording is an audio presentation by Jasper L'Estrange for EnCrypted Horror. “The Story of the Inexperienced Ghost” by H.G. Wells. First published in The Strand Magazine (March 1902). You can hear me discuss this story by becoming a channel member and listening to a forthcoming episode of The EnCrypted Postmortem
In 1914 Arthur Machen published “The Bowmen”, a patriotic supernatural tale intended to boost the morale of British soldiers fighting in the trenches and those at home who had heard reports of the horrors of warfare. However, much to his consternation, Machen's story was taken as fact by a public who desperately wanted to believe and spawned the legend of The Angels of Mons. His 1915 short story “Out of the Earth” deals with the aftermath of “The Bowmen” controversy, exploring the ways that myths and stories can take on a life of their own by examining some peculiar happenings along part of the Welsh coast. This original recording is an audio presentation by Jasper L'Estrange for EnCrypted Horror. “The Bowmen” by Arthur Machen (1914) and “Out of the Earth” by Arthur Machen (1915). You can hear me discuss this story by becoming a channel member and listening to a forthcoming episode of The EnCrypted Postmortem. CREATOR'S NOTE: These recordings contain sound effects and music because that's what I personally like to listen to, and what I enjoy making. As you will see from the comments, a lot of the listeners also like it. There are many narrators who don't do this and they will be delighted to meet you. I try to do different voices just because I think it helps differentiate between characters when you're listening. Apologies if I don't nail every accent. You knew what I was going for, and at least I gave you a laugh. Apologies if I accidentally used a WW2 gun for my WW1 sound effects. Apologies if I said some of the Welsh things wrong. It's hard, you know. The stories I read on this channel come from another time, many decades ago. If some of the ideas, beliefs, sentiments, and language upsets you, try and forgive them…as you will expect to be forgiven by the people judging you ten years from now.
Two debauched noblemen seek refuge in the cottage of Goody Boyle one stormy night. When they find out that her home is the last resting place of a mutual enemy – Richard Horne – and his corpse is in the next room, they decide to play a diabolical joke. But just who will have the last laugh in Marjorie Bowen's classic tale of cruelty, revenge, and witchcraft. This original recording is an audio presentation by Jasper L'Estrange for EnCrypted Horror. “Keckies” by Marjorie Bowen (1925). You can hear me discuss this story by becoming a channel member and listening to the next episode (17) of The EnCrypted Postmortem (uploaded soon…when I've finished it!). CREATOR'S NOTE: These recordings contain sound effects and music because that's what I personally like to listen to, and what I enjoy making. As you will see from the comments, a lot of the listeners also like it. If it's not your thing, please feel free to listen to the many other narrators who are voice-only. I'm sure they'll be happy to meet you. I do accents and voices to help distinguish between characters, but please keep in mind that I'm not Michael Sheen or Meryl Streep, nor have I ever claimed to be. Sometimes when I voice a female character, I will raise the pitch of my voice. If this upsets you, I am sorry…but imagine how confusing it would be if all my female characters sounded like the baritones in a male voice choir. These are recorded by a rank amateur using substandard equipment in a room with appalling equipment. If this upsets you, please send money so I can buy better equipment and a new house. Finally, I try and pronounce all words correctly, but, like you, I am not a walking dictionary and encyclopedia. Think of my mistakes and idiosyncrasies as a charming reminder that you are listening to an actual human who has tried to imbue his narration with personality and drama…and not a soulless AI-generated voice. EDITORIAL NOTE: I made a slight amend to the text because I believe there was a point in the original where it was unclear which character was speaking.
When Reverend Dionysius Luan asks to visit his cousin who is in prison awaiting execution, the solicitor begins to wonder whether he has an ulterior motive. This original recording is an audio presentation by Jasper L'Estrange for EnCrypted Horror. “An Experiment of the Dead” by Helen de Guerry Simpson (1938). You can hear me discuss this story by becoming a channel member and listening to episode 17 of The EnCrypted Postmortem (uploaded soon).
A Canadian soldier journeys to England in response to an advertisement seeking the heir to his ancestral home Quinton Court. On visiting his cousin, a strange and invalid antiquarian, he uncovers dark secrets and begins to question whether he should accept the mantle of…the next heir. This original recording is an audio presentation by Jasper L'Estrange for EnCrypted Horror. “The Next Heir” by H. D. Everett (1920). You can hear me discuss this story by becoming a channel member and listening to episode 16 of The EnCrypted Postmortem (uploaded soon). CREATOR'S NOTE: These recordings contain sound effects and music because that's what I like to make and listen to. As you will see from the comments, a lot of the listeners also like it. If it's not your thing, please feel free to listen to the many other narrators who are voice-only. I'm sure they'll be glad to hear from you. I do accents and voices to help distinguish between characters. Again, if that's not your thing, look elsewhere. If you think my Canadian sounds like he comes from the wrong part of the world, please remember I'm a hobbyist, not Michael Sheen. If you want to complain about my microphone and production quality, links are below for you to send me money to invest in better equipment. Cheers!
America's foremost authority on poltergeists, the indomitable Cranshawe, is called in to investigate the mysterious occurrences at a fogbound coastal town. But who, or what, is behind the strange sights and sounds, and will Cranshawe crack the case before yet another tragedy strikes Forgotten Harbour? This original recording is an audio presentation by Jasper L'Estrange for EnCrypted Horror. I will be discussing the story on episode 15 of The EnCrypted Postmortem (my bonus content for channel members and patreons, out soon).
The lives of a young girl and boy are changed irrevocably following an encounter with a strange dog at a mysterious house. But what really happened that day, and was it (as Mary suggests) a “haunted house”? This original recording is an audio presentation by Jasper L'Estrange for EnCrypted Horror. You can hear me discuss this story by becoming a Patreon or YouTube channel member and listening to episode 14 of The EnCrypted Postmortem. (Due to various issues these will be uploaded in the near future!)
The resident of a rundown boarding house becomes intrigued when a familiar face comes seeking a room. The man has returned from South America with a strange story and even stranger cargo. But will it be his undoing…? This original recording is an audio presentation by Jasper L'Estrange for EnCrypted Horror. “The Black Stone Statue” by Mary Elizabeth Counselman (1937). You can hear me discuss this story by becoming a channel member and listening to episode 13 of The EnCrypted Postmortem. (Due to various issues episodes 12 and 13 will be delayed.) NOTE: My recordings are intended to be an immersive experience featuring music and sound effects. If you don't like these elements, there are plenty of narration channels that don't have them and they'd love to hear from you. This is a hobby/side hustle. I'm an amateur at sound recording and production but I do my best to make something listenable. I do voices to differentiate between characters but I'm not a professional voice actor or narrator. Some of these stories are old and contain words and attitudes you might not like. They do not necessarily represent the views of…well…me. Sometimes a pet dog or cat will die. Horribly.
